This is such a lovely little shop on 3rd street! There's also a location in NYC (tucked away in the West Village) that I hadn't known about when I lived there.
After reading some reviews, I was worried that I wouldn't have an "acquired taste" or be used to these Swedish/Scandinavian candies with my American palette (grew up with the typical candies here). But there was definitely no need for the worry and apprehension! They weren't something I had to adapt to taste-wise; they're even better.
There's a good selection of colorful options from sour, super sour, sweet and tangy, chewy, wrapped chocolates, nougats, etc. Some are so juicy and abundant with natural flavors. They're in separate clean, clear bins with one large, shared cover -- make sure you push-glide the cover up from the center as the worker informed me after I awkwardly struggled with them a couple times, haha.
You grab a bag and spoon, and get the bag weighed when you're done. I was worried it would get very expensive, but the candies are pretty tiny and dainty so they don't weigh much. I tried to portion control myself and got no more than a few of a particular candy to try. The cute raspberry one (looks like it's dipped in "cream") might be my favorite so far, but hard to say because they're all so special!
As advertised, all the candies are made with natural colors, no GMO, no transfat, and no high fructose corn syrup. How neat is that?? Good tasting candies without all the chemicals. I didn't bite into any of the artificial-tasting flavors that you get in your average candy, and I also haven't gotten dreaded sugar rushes after these...so the healthier ingredients must be doing their job I say!
They also sell various Scandinavian treats and gifts against the wall. My grandma ended up getting a can of mackerel with tomato, which the kind worker had said she loves to put in sandwiches. I thought it was funny she was getting this at a candy shop, but I'm also very curious to try it myself.
The worst part is the parking here. Not sure why some people said the parking is easy... I wasn't here during rush hour, but I didn't find any parking on side streets and barely any on the restricted, metered spots on 3rd street. The packed lots for Trader Joe's, etc. across the street are also a hassle. Do wish they'd open another location! I would go pretty often if there was an easier location. read more
