I think you can tell from her response the type of person you'd be dealing with at this store-- again, would never recommend this place as the owner is clearly rude and abrasive. As you will notice the owner or someone from Social Butterfly had offered an "explanation" to my previous review. Please note my review was done February of 2014 now almost a year later the owner offers her "side" . I find it odd that she can remember exact details about our visit to her store when she is responding 15 months after the original review. All I can say is that my previous review stands and that everything I wrote was true to our experience. As a side note we had visited the store previously trying to save ourselves the 90 minute drive to Harrisonburg. Believe me we didn't keep going back because we enjoyed the horrible service. Find somewhere else to get your dress and if you do go in, make sure you have your money out so that she knows you'll pay! I went here to try and find a prom dress but after being inside for 5 minutes, I already wanted to leave. Upon walking in we were told where all the different sizes were and we made our way all the way out of the front room and to the back where the 1 rack of dresses bigger than a 10 were. Nothing to write home about there with the selection of the larger sizes, the dresses were mediocre at best. My mother and I began looking at the dresses when Wanda, the owner, walked over and asked if we had been helped. We said no and she began writing down our information and what I assume was putting us in line for a dressing room she asked for my information then made it very clear I was not to zip my own dress, she turned to my mother and said she could but "only if she was so very incredibly careful". At this point we were both slightly annoyed but continued to browse the rack. My mother overhead Wanda telling her employees to give dressing rooms to people with parents first, as they were more likely to buy them. I found a dress that I wanted to try on and handed to my mom to hold while I continue to look through them. She was holding it by the hanger so that the dress wasn't touching the ground when Wanda showed up again, she took the dress to put it by a dressing room and after taking from my mother demonstrated "the best way to hold a dress". While there were many ways to convey this and the statement about the zipper, she managed to do it in the most condescending way possible. At this point I wanted to leave. I tried on 2 dresses, one not zipped and one zipped by one of the employees (who blended in to the people shopping). Neither were great and I mentioned wanting to see one of the dresses that wasn't in my size. My mom went to get it and came back, I slipped on the robe that was in the room so I could talk to my mom when an employee came over, obviously she didn't want me wearing it and tried to fix it even though I only intended on having it on for a minute. Along came Wanda again! She told me she knew how I could see the dress and proceeded to talk about how I could hold it up to my body and go on and on. I handed the dress back and went in to put my clothes back on. She then told us how she could order a dress but she only had one of each in different sizes and go on about that and her designer dresses. After this speil we looked through the smaller sizes before making our way to the door. Fault lies with the owner on this, not a pleasant experience. read more

This location is back in business and I am very happy. Mrs. Wanda is very knowledgable about her dresses. The selection is almost as amazing as she was. Mrs. Wanda and her husband were both pleasurable. They are the cutest couple. They helped us find the perfect dress for my daughter's prom. Please go see her for any of your formal needs!!! DO NOT COME HERE. I came here a while back with a couple of my friends shopping for dresses for our senior prom. We picked out a couple of dresses each, the owner rudely snatched dresses out of our hands saying we are not allowed to touch them. We tried the dresses on, the owner did not let us zip up the dresses ourselves, and instead of zipping them zip, she acted as if they were too big on us saying we are too big for the dresses. This was a VERY upsetting experience. My friends and i removed the dresses and looked around a couple of other dresses and the owner demanded to see our credit cards or cash saying we were merely waisting her time. She yelled st her employees various times in the store, and her employees came up to us to apologize for her behavior. This is unacceptable, humiliating, and unprofessional. Took my daughter on a weekday morning to shop for a prom dress. We were the only ones in the store and ended up ordering and paying for one. Was told by the owner that it would arrive within a week or two. Never heard a word, but were back in the area a few weeks later on a weekend and stopped by. There were about 10 girls looking at/trying on dresses and my daughter's dress wasn't in the back. We looked around & found it being tried on by one of the customers. We were told by the owner that she had ordered that dress for us and we had to take it, that it was just bad luck that we happened to walk in then & see someone trying it on. Even though I said we paid for a brand new dress, not one that had been on the floor for a couple of weeks to be tried on by other girls, the owner refused to budge and said she'd sue if we didn't take it. I called over the period of a week or so to find out if an appointment was necessary. I was assured it was not. I asked the best time to come and she said the weekends were a madhouse. So I had my daughter take the day off of school to make a day of it. It was snowing lightly, but not sticking to the roads. We called on our way and the message said nothing, and the website showed nothing. After an hour and a half drive we get there an hour after opening at 12:30 and the store is closed! I call both numbers on the door - and I leave a message, but no one answers. I go to the barrel store next door and they say the woman who owns it seems to just open and close on a whim. They have no idea what hours she keeps, but they think the restaurant may know her number. We go to the restaurant and they say essentially the same thing. You never know if she's going to be open or not. If it was down the street for us that would be one thing - we planned the day around it. I called the number again and now suddenly the message is up that she is closed for the day. I don't know how you run a business just opening and closing as you please. At least hire a manager to run the store! We went to Tysons and found a beautiful dress at Nieman Marcus. read more

My daughter found out about the Social Butterfly a year ago and has since bought all her dresses from them for her homecoming, winter dance and prom. Wanda and Tom, the owners, take such good care of you. My daughter's homecoming was a week away and she still didn't have her dress picked out. Wanda spent several hours with us checking on dresses. My daughter found one and we ordered it on Friday - I picked it up Monday morning. They are closed on Monday, however, they opened up so that someone would be at the store when the dress got delivered. Now that's service! We went into this store today looking for a prom dress. We looked at dresses to try on without anyone's help and my daughter tried them on. Didn't find the "perfect" dress which was fine, but when we were leaving the owner was exceptionally rude. She told us that she knew we weren't going to buy anything because we tried on too many dresses (?) and that she spent a lot of money buying these dresses. We were shocked because we were pleasant, rehung the dresses that were tried on and were not in anway a problem. The owner does not know how to run a store - who talks/treats customers like that? I would've rather had "in your face and up-sell everything" department store sales associates assist me (let's face it...no one on earth would like that but this case is different) than Social Butterfly's "you break you buy" nasty attitude. She watches you from BEHIND the cash wrap like a hawk. Didn't move an inch to help. I came in to find a dress for my pageant because I ordered two off Amazon and they did not look right. My pageant is in 5 days and I was freaking out, then my sister recommended social butterfly. Earlier this year my older sister got a prom dress form social butterfly and it was astonishing so I decided why not give it a try. Let me start off by saying I am a very picky person and tend to get moody when shopping, yet the owner helped me find the perfect dress. After going through about 20 dresses she selected one for me and it was absolutely amazing. Except it did not fit right because I have a short torso. I think she understood that I fell in love with the dress and made a call to her friend at tangs alterations where they stayed late and were able to alter the dress. They even expressed it with no extra charge. I am so thankful for the owner she is a lovely lady who will stop at nothing to put you in that perfect dress. This store has beautiful dresses. The owner is very particular with the dresses and keeps them in immaculate condition. They have a great policy in which they keep track of dresses sold to each school. They do not allow more than one person from each school to purchase the same dress. If they don't have your size, no problem they will order it for you. If you want to rent a tux they will do that for you at a great price. read more

My daughter and I went to this store looking for a specific dress for her prom. I pointed out the dress I was looking for to a sales associate from a catalog they had in the store. She rudely told me that they didn't have it and it would have to be ordered. At that point I suggested to my daughter to try on some dresses by the same designer so we could get her size and then order the dress she wants. The sales associate said to me, "uh we don't do that here. You can't just come here and play dress up". My daughter and I left without trying on one dress. I would never recommend this store. My daughter and I happened to see the store on our way to something else and then stopped by later to see what we might find in the way of a prom dress. Our other shopping trips had been unsuccessful with very limited selection. What a find! Two full racks of formal dresses for each size!! Wanda and her assistant made us feel right at home. After my daughter selected 3 dressed to try on they assisted her with putting them on and then brought other selections for her to look at and try on based on her likes and dislikes of the first three. They were very helpful with the selections and my daughter found the perfect dress for her prom! I highly recommend this store for its extensive selections and the personal care shoppers receive. read more

My mom and I bought a dress at social butterfly and waited weeks for the call notifying me of the dress's arrival. After waiting a month, my mom and I went in the store to find a girl trying on my brand new dress. Staff members gave us attitude and were extremely rude when we saw a problem with this. The store owner, Wanda, called my mom and started yelling at her. Wanda refused to give us the money back for the dress, which was supposed to be brand new, not worn. She said we must take the dress and refuses to cooperate with us. We weren't willing to spend big money on a dress that has been put on the rack when it was supposed to be brand new. She was disrespectful and rude...worst customer service I have ever experienced in my life. Do NOT buy from this store. read more

I went to this store this past weekend with my sister intending to buy WHATEVER Prom Dress that she fell in love with. While in the store I heard the owner continuously putting down customers on payments, and refusing to discount anything. She was also very rudely talking to the young teen girls that worked in her store. I was told that I would have to pay for any single buttons that we may rip off. She basically told my sister that she was to big to wear any of her dresses, she's a size 8! After that I was completely finished and I will never step foot in her store again. I would tread lightly while visiting her store. There is an amazing prom store in Harrisonburg called Reflections where they are all very helpful and do not put anyone down. Reflections has a much larger selection and will discount your dress if you happen to find something wrong with it! read more

Bought a homecoming dress here for my daughter this past weekend, after visiting some of the chains. The staff was helpful, perhaps a little hypervigilant. That said, the dresses are in much better condition than I've seen elsewhere, and the selection was good. I would buy again, and will probably return for a prom dress later in the year. read more

I went into this store with my sister intending to by MYSELF a prom dress. The dresses were gorgeous, expensive, but beautiful. The store owner, however, was not. The first thing she told me was that I was not allowed to try on the designer dresses with out my mom there. My sister told her that I am 18 and she is 20, she condescendingly asked who was paying for the dress, I told her I would be and she said maybe I could try on the dresses if i let her help me into and out of it. Yeah because I really want some strange old lady seeing me change. After that I was just trying to shop and she wouldn't leave us alone. she kept trying to make suggestions that were less than helpful, commenting on the affordability of the dresses without even knowing my price range. she then made me kind of uncomfortable because she told me i had big boobs and i couldn't try on strapless of one sleeved, she said i had to have two straps.She continuously made comments like this, it got pretty old. She also kept going on about how if it wouldn't zip she wouldn't force it up. I understand the fact that these are very nice and very expensive dressed but there is absolutely no excuse for being rude to your customers. She was also quite rude to here sweet young employees. it was quite terrible to watch. I'm actually embarrassed to say I went back the next day with my mother. the owner was not there but another woman was, perhaps a partner or assistant. while trying on a dress, i touched a sleeve and she yelled at me telling me the beads were gonna fall off. honestly the beads are going to fall off at the touch I'm not going to spend hundreds of dollars on a dress. i would not shop her ever again. i found my dream dress and if i cannot find it elsewhere i will not be wearing it. i refuse to buy from this terrible shop. please save yourself some trouble and find someplace else. read more

We took our three daughters prom gown shopping at Social Butterfly a few weeks ago. What a joke. We were the only customers in the store. The owner did not greet us. As we began looking at the dresses, she told us in a loud, unfriendly voice that we need to handle the gowns by the hangers, NOT the bags. (The "gowns" are kept in flimsy plastic like from the dry cleaners -- not proper garment bags with zippers). We were being very gentle -- it's not like we don't know how to handle gowns, after all... Needless to say, we were floored at how rude this woman was, so we left right away. I would say that she lost out on the sale of three gowns, but we would not have purchased from that place anyway, as the "gowns" seemed old, outdated, and the place smelled really bad. This owner needs a refresher course on Retail 101 -- customer service! What an unpleasant experience. I don't know how someone like that is in business... read more
