Good enough sushi quality.   But taken in the context of the highly competitive Japanese restaurant scene in the twin cities, I can't say this is any better than slightly above average.    Nice location near U of M campus. GOOD:   Fish quality is never bad here, and in any city other than Minneapolis would seem outstanding.   Nice appetizer menu, and good selection of standard Thai dishes.   Decent enough sake selection.   Nice dining room ambiance, halfway between neighborhood joint and casual romantic.    Best of all are the prices:  Some of the most reasonably priced sushi in the area. MEH:   On more than one occasion I've seen the sushi chefs ham it up with customers at great length.  Not only is this loud and distracting for diners, but it most definitely delays table service.   Sober Fish has the longest wait for sushi that I've seen in any twin cities area restaurant.     Sober Fish is a favorite among my friends, and I like bringing my wife here for date night when we have places to go in the area.   But otherwise, I don't think this place is really much beyond a local neighborhood destination. read more

Never been inside, but I've ordered delivery/take out 3 or 4 times now. I'm so grateful that this place exists that I almost want to give it 5 stars, but it's really a straight down the middle 4 star place. I love that I can get a decent thai beef salad, some baked mussels and a couple sushi rolls from the same place. Some of the sushi rolls are not the best, and they seem to be lacking the more basic options, but all in all, it's about as good as sushi delivery gets here. I'm used to nyc where you can order sushi delivery from about 20 places at any time. It's the most common delivery item there, but I forgot that it's less common in the rest of the country :( Anyways! I'm sure I will be ordering from here many more Sundays. Stopped by with a friend. I remembered that they had great Sunday deals. This is the old True Thai restaurant, on the corner, for those of you who cannot place where Soberfish is located, also across the street from Perkins Riverside They have a lunch menu, where you get an entree and an appetizer for $10 until 3pm, I think. Then their Happy hour starts. I had Red Curry and miso soup and then ordered a full size appetizer of the Sober wings (basically fried wings with no sauce). The wings were decent. I might go solely for their wings, but they had other good things to eat as well. I was pleased though and remember wanting to eat the last one that I was splitting with my friend. Decent wings. Service was nice, friendly, checked on us just enough to not be annoying or feel forgotten. She had the formula down right! Decor is nice & cozy. In the front area there is a fully loaded bar, about 1 booth, and 6 tables. Past the bar there are more tables, a fire place, and an overflow room or private room. Thai food plus sushi? Yes please! My friend and I couldn't decide on what to get for dinner, she was really in a sushi-mood, and I was decidedly not. So Soberfish was the answer to our prayers. Our server was attentive, friendly, and helpful. Our drinks were delicious, and the food was even better. I like to try the same dish at all the Thai restaurants I go to, to compare and judge fairly, and Soberfish was definitely up there with the best. read more

The food was spot on! Location and service were the only downsides. First thing we noticed upon walking in was the sign warning against common theft. Second, our server did not wear a mask when speaking with us, or at all really. Nobody else was in the restaurant at 3:30, so our food was quick and perfect. I would go again, hopefully when the restaurant was in a better appearance. It appeared to be deconstructed relatively, assumably from Covid. This review is for their takeout and does not include service/location/etc. so really only based on quality of takeout food. Also have never ordered sushi here so cannot speak to that. As for their Thai, SO GOOD. Get here, order, it eat, smile because you're friggin happy you did! Really love their papaya salad. It's spicy for sure but refreshing and well balanced. Red curry was very good and veggies included were delicious. Pad see ew overall good but would have enjoyed a bit more sauce. Drunken chicken wings were delish!! This is my go to local sushi restaurant. I usually only go out for sushi during happy hour, and this place has a great menu during it. Last time I went out I tried the oysters (always wanted to try oysters), but I gotta say I didn't like how these ones were served. I wanted a more simplistic serving and these ones came in a lot of the ponzu sauce and whatever other seasonings they used, therefore I didn't really taste the oyster itself, more so just the sauces. If you're like me then I'd recommend asking for a more "dry" serving of them. Also, they are pretty small servings (5 for $10 off appetizer menu). read more

I've been here twice now. The first time was for a private party and although I arrived a bit late after most orders were taken and wasn't hungry at the time, I never was once approached by the server if I ever wanted anything, I had been waiting to order a drink so I had to get someone's attention after awhile. Second visit: came during happy hour. Not that impressed. We ordered the shrimp tempura, eggrolls, 4 rolls, and the tempura ice cream. They use too much rice and too little fillings so you pretty much fill up on rice. We realized we only got TWO shrimp tempuras and the rest of the plate was filled with a bunch of carrot and onion tempura and it cost $7.00 on the hh price list, the shrimp size didn't even makeup for the price they are charging. Happy Hour on a Fridayyyyyy!! Pre-gaming before a comedy show. My 3 friends and I went to Soberfish around 5:30 on a Friday. The place was not quite busy at this time with many seating options throughout. Happy Hour ended at 6:00 so we had to make some quick decisions to get the deals. I was quite impressed with Soberfish's drink and food options on the menu. The discount is a few dollars off the original prices. I really enjoyed my vegetable egg rolls. I loved the crispy texture of the shell. It was quite oily but still tasty. I didn't really enjoy my vegetable pad Thai so I will try something different next time. My friend's sweet and sour chicken was different then what he expected. He still enjoyed the very colorful dish. The sushi and sake were delicious. Our server was attentive and friendly. Ordered delivery from soberfish for girl's night, through a third party app. I got the pineapple curry with chicken and vegetables. When vegetables was selected I was expecting other vegetables to be added but that was not the case. I was able to look past that because the pineapple curry with chicken was sweet and tangy and very delicious! Also, all the portions were large. My friend ordered the pad see ew and unfortunately it was nearly inedible for her because there was sooo much cracked black pepper it made it too spicy for her taste. This must have been a one off situation because she has ordered this dish from there before and has not had that happen. My cousin ordered the crunchy roll and it was well liked. Another friend ordered the patak seafood combination which they really liked and it looked really good but unfortunately I couldn't try it due to a scallop allergy. Regardless of the two mishaps I would order again due to taste and portion size. read more

I had a nice little visit to Soberfish recently ordering a bunch of food off the menu to share with friends. We started with the spring rolls (gotta try the classics everywhere!), chicken satay, cream cheese wontons, and the sober wings. I was hoping to order the salmon head, but the rest of the table politely asked me not to; hopefully it will be on the menu the next time I come! The spring rolls and the dipping sauce were tasty and herbaceous; actually some of the best I've had in a while. The chicken satay itself was cooked and seasoned well, but the peanut dipping sauce and the cucumber vinegar were a little on basic/bland side. The cream cheese wontons were exactly what you'd expect, and the wings themselves were good, but the sauce was super runny that I actually had a problem with it. If you are going to do a basic salt and pepper seasoning, I feel like you should have a thicker sauce that actually sticks on the wings and this just seemed like dipping it in lightly flavored vinegar. If it were thicker I think I would have liked it! After apps we ordered some rolls and a curry to share. We decided on Massamun curry after the server indicated that was the customer favorite, hamachi, a caterpillar roll, mothra roll, a veggie roll, and a spicy tuna roll. The curry was rich and flavorful, but I was a bit disappointed in that even though the menu indicated that it was spicy, the serving we got was at like a 0. Spice level = ketchup. I would have liked a bit more heat and a bit more sourness/acidity to cut the heavy coconut milk. The rolls were on the good side of average (the fish seemed higher quality), but the actual star was the veggie roll! Those that had it stated that the soybean wrapper was super tasty and that it had a good mix of flavor. Overall the food was pretty good and was well priced. Not too sure I ever gave this place a fair chance, because I couldn't seem to get past the unpleasant smell that greeted me when I walked in. Instead of walking out, I stayed for happy hour. The happy hour specials include $2 off all the sake and a few rolls that average around $5. The apple sake was more fruity than I expected. Not sure if any alcohol content was in it, but it was decent, however I will never order it again. The Dynamite roll comes in five pieces and is very spicy. It is more spicy and flavorful than the Spicy Tuna. The Philly roll was bland. And the Crunchy roll was just too sweet for me. I would probably order the Crunchy roll again, however I would hold off on the eel sauce. The service was slow and my waiter wasn't the most courteous. He actually got our order wrong yet didn't offer to correct it by amending the bill. Maybe my expectations are just unrealistic. This place was recommend as the best place in Minneapolis for sushi. Impressive for ordering through bitesquad. I like to consider myself a bit of a Panag Curry expert and I fully approve. I added veggies cuz why not make more outta that glorious orange sauce. The sushi is great, will order again. Egg rolls were really crispy and tasty! If it helps at all, I'm majorly skeptical about bite squad orders and normally immediately have buyers remorse and spiral into the -- what am I doin with my life internal chatter. Ate here last night during happy hour and loved it. The happy hour prices are sooooo awesome I couldn't believe it. We got the Gyoza, fried spring rolls, tuna tataki, red curry, a couple of sushi rolls and desert. All of it was fabulous and I didn't have a single complaint. Oh and the thai tea is delicious. After Obento-Ya closed in the SE Mpls neighborhood we needed a new sushi place. This was our 2nd time at Soberfish. The first time our food was good, but the server gave us the wrong beers. This time was horrible. After almost 11 month of not eating sushi, and 2 months of not going out with my husband, we decided to go to Soberfish for a Mother's Day date night. We got there a little bit after 5 thinking it would be a quick in and out dinner but after waiting over an hour and 15 minutes for my sushi we decided to leave. My husband ordered a hot dish and received it cold after 40 minutes and I sat there and starved. The server kept telling me the food was coming but it never did. We spoke with the manager who comped our dinner and gave us sushi to go, but since the order was rushed and the sushi looked disgusting. It was sloppy and barely rolled. I ended up throwing it all in the trash and ate a bowl of cereal when I got home. It was a horrible experience especially for my first date night of being a new mom and hauling our 8 week old baby out to celebrate. It's the worst feeling sitting in a restaurant for almost 90 minutes without food and then going home hungry. Thanks Soberfish for ruining my first date night as a new Mom and on Mother's Day weekend too. Good work. read more

I got fired from this place, but during the orientation, I got to try the Laab Salad. I've tried other locations Laab Salad to avoid coming here but this one is one my favorites. So I come back here often. They give you a good deal of sticky rice and half a head of lettuce. It's a great choice if you like citrus-flavored meat. They also have a great HH for sushi! Good flavor, slow service, soupy curry but nicely spicy I ordered take-out from Sober Fish today, the first time in several months from this neighborhood restaurant. They said it would be ready in 20 minutes, I showed up in 30 and it still wasn't ready. It came out a few minutes later. I ordered the green curry with shrimp, and it was quite flavorful. However, it was very soupy. Added to the rice with a few extra shrimp thrown in, it made a curried shrimp and rice soup, not a proper curry. I'm not sure why you would raise your price on your sushi in general around 20-%30% The sushi dinner for example raised abruptly from $23 to $28. That's a huge jump for a regular customer. If you're adjusting for inflation or labor shortage, it's still seems excessive. I'd be fine with things if your food was stellar or if you just didn't forget my soup and salad. The issue is that your sushi preparation is mediocre or miss. The fish is never bad; getting fresh fish isn't the hard part of sushi. Sushi means: vinegared rice. Executing perfectly cooked rice along with the right amount of sushi vinegar seasoning is the heart of sushi. Most of the time the rice is too wet and compacted. It's the difference between putting a delicate pastry in your mouth or a wet clump. Good luck in your exorbitant price hikes. There are literally 50 other options in the city. read more

Literally my favorite restaurant in all of the twin cities. Having first eaten sushi at the Tokyo fish Market in Japan, I can kind of be a sushi snob. Which is great for being able to appreciate good sushi, but it makes it hard to find restaurants with sushi I really like. Soberfish is one of those restaurants. The sushi is fresh. The wasabi is spicy. And the ginger tickles your tongue in all the right places. Not only is the sushi good but they're happy hour menu makes it uber-affordable if you go at the right times. My girlfriend and I stopped by last Friday for a late night happy hour, and boyyyy am I glad we did. It was my first time visiting, but my girlfriend was a regular. We ordered two sushi rolls, egg rolls, spring rolls, pad thai and a bottle of wine and our grand total was ONLY $40. The egg rolls were lightly fried and the wonton wrappers were crispy deliciousness. The spring rolls were fresh AF and also very flavorful. The pad thai was a generous portion and packed some heat (you're able to select your spice level). The sushi rolls were good, but not great.
