The noodles were good. The portion size for the set menu was good. But we did see people at the table next to us order some lotus root that was so small but so expensive. But our meal was good for what we can get in NY. It was also pretty busy at 6 pm, but not as busy as you would expect at a regular NYC restaurant.

Pros: - the food was sooooo yummy - I got the Ten Sashi Gozen, the sashimi was more fresh than I expected, the soba noodles with the sauce was delicious. The tempura was not as heavy/oily as I thought it would be and I'm not sure what the okra was coated in but I really liked it Cons: - nothing to mention in this section, really Comments: - went on a Tuesday evening around 4:20PM, a lot of tables were occupied already but once it hit around 5:30PM, was when it started getting very busy - the noise level wasn't too loud but I did think there were times where it was kind of quiet

very tight seating in this location but normal for NY and hard to get service but was delicious- sitting in the back worked for our party of three so it was quieter also apparently we took too long to leave so they asked us to give up the table after paying and not moving to leave after 15+ minutes

Sauteed Duck Soba

Really enjoyed the soba here and the menus many offerings. My husband and I ordered the hot soba which was perfectly al dente when it arrived but by the end of the meal had become slightly soggy since they make their noodles fresh. Both the curry broth and broth that came with the duck soba was flavorful. I like that they ask you how many grams of soba you'd like (all at the same price) so that portion sizes are a bit more custom. Would love to come back in the summer and also to try their parfait.

Soba set with shrimp tempura - medium size

Super yummy and HUGE portions which is fantastic. Also all sizes are actually the same price so you could get a large and pay the same price as a small! I haven't had soba in so long and this was a great return to it. They don't take reservations so if you're planning to go here, plan for potential wait. My friend and I went and there wasn't really a wait but there were people starting to line up and inside was packed (Saturday night)

Authentic soba spot in NYC! I recently came and was impressed by how fresh their soba noodles tasted. Their menu has other options like hot pot, udon and other appetizers, but the soba is a must-order. The restaurant is small like any other restaurant in NYC but they do try to fit many 2 person tables and leave the back for a couple tables to fit 4-6 people. It is cozy and the waiters are welcoming, but get too busy to worry about your table after you place the order. I ordered one of the Gozen sets which included the soba. It was very filling for me! Tempura was fresh, salmon sashimi was fresh, soba was very fresh. Their picture and description said it would include dessert which I was hoping was the mochi like in the menu picture, but no dessert was offered. Bummed about that. If you're craving authentic Japanese food, try it out. Be prepared to wait if you come after 6pm for dinner.

The soba noodles here do taste pretty fresh and the buckwheat taste is pretty distinctive. Their soba dipping flavor is also pretty strong. Overall, their soba is good but not amazing - very accessible spot though if you're getting off work in midtown! Okonomiyaki was very crispy and I loved the taste. Dessert was a bummer though and the portion sizing was a little disappointing.

After an eventful day, my boyfriend and I were left craving soba noodles so we decided to check this place out. It is a small shop with what seems like a very quick turnover rate. Everyone seems to just eat, pay and leave which really reminded me of Japanese culture. We came in during their lunch rush it seems because the store filled up so quickly which I can understand because the food was delicious. The soba set was already pretty big so my boyfriend and I decided to get some of their mini bowls to try to get a little more variety in and I do want to point out that although it is called mini bowl, it is pretty much a single serving bowl which left us which quite a bit of delicious left overs. Starting off, we got the fried oysters. I love oysters but currently cannot eat raw good so this was a very good substitute. It was packed with the oyster juices and flavor. Then we received our soba set which I asked to revive hot. We ordered the set with the eel rice bowl which was definitely the right choice. The soba noodles were perfectly cooked and the broth was light but super flavorful. Onto the next rice dishes. We enjoyed both of the mini rice dishes as well and ate as much as we could before taking them to go (it was a lot of carbs). One thing that I do have to point out though is that all three of the bowls had the most delicious rice. It was perfectly cooked, nice and super water but still came together to become chewy. We finally finished off with the Pandan mochi waffle with the ube ice cream. I am very picky when it comes to my dessert so this one was just okay for me. The Pandan mochi waffle was a Pandan waffle with bits of mochi in the middle which was quite underwhelming but the ube ice cream was nice. Overall, this was a great experience to have in the city and I will be back to try their cold soba next time!

Azuma was recommended by a friend and I'm so glad I tried it, my meal was great. Service was quick and the restaurant is cute and causal. To start we shared some vegetable goyza, and these were the best tasting veggie goyza I have had! The veggies were flavorful and you could really taste all of the ingredients. For my main I had the tempura soba set and enjoyed it very much. When ordering I was given a choice of the noddle portion size, and I'm glad I went with standard/medium portion, because I don't think i could have eaten any more! For desert I shared a matcha waffle with vanilla ice cream.

If you're looking for a spot that serves consistently good Japanese food at a fair price, this place should be on your list. I've been coming here for years, and it never disappoints. Service: Good Quality: Fair (but reliable!) Cleanliness: Good Price: Fair This restaurant is best known for its freshly made soba--yes, they make it in-house daily. But don't sleep on the rest of their hot dishes; there are plenty of options to explore. This time, I ordered the Azuma Gozen ($28.50) with medium-size soba (200g). You can choose a smaller portion (100g) or go big with the large (300g). I went with cold soba, cooked perfectly al dente, and it came with a little bit of everything: crispy tempura, fresh salmon sashimi, sweet rolled omelette, and okra with sesame paste. A mini feast in a box! And the best part? It comes with dessert--definitely try their matcha ice cream if you're a green tea fan. Overall, this is one of my go-to restaurants for a reason. Consistent, comforting, and always satisfying--perfect for regular visits or when you're craving quality soba.

so yummy!!! convenient spot with no wait and always hits in the way comfort food does. Inside is fairly spacious and not too loud with a mix of bar seating and booth seating. Will be back again! Got the unagidon cold soba noodle, and i was absolutely stuffed. Great meal and for a reasonable price relative to the city.

Pork cutlet egg bowl

My friend and I walked in for a weekend lunch; there were plenty of tables available, and incidentally I think they only take reservations for larger parties. I have passed by in the evening and seen a queue before, though -- something to keep in mind. Interior is lovely -- generally spacious, and I liked the unassuming and simple Japanese-style decor. We each ordered one of the rice bowl sets with cold soba. Both of us opted for the 300g size, which was definitely a little filling; if I wasn't so hungry, I think 200g would have been more appropriate. Regardless, the noodles were delicious -- I loved the chewy texture, and the dipping sauce added just the right amount of saltiness/flavour to the noodles. I had the rice set with pork cutlet curry, which was also yummy. The pork was tender and the breading was nicely crispy, without being too dry or oily. My friend had the pork cutlet egg bowl for his rice dish, and it was also a great choice. Price point was really solid, esp for such a lovely meal. Would love to come back to try more of their different soba options next time :)

unagi with rice, okonomiyaki
Pitcha S.

Ate in 2024: I got their unagi over rice and okonomiyaki and both were delicious! The sauce on the unagi wasn't too sweet, which is what I prefer. I did think the okonomiyaki should have been a bit crispy, it was kind of soggy, and a bit burnt. My friends enjoyed their soba noodle dishes.

Ask the Community - Soba Noodle Azuma

Hi do you open New Year's Eve ? If yes what time close. Also need reservation? Around Times Square will close so how can I get there?

Is weekend lunch the same as dinner menu?

Yes! They have one menu that's used for both weekday and weekend lunch and dinner but on top of that they have weekday lunch specials that's different day by day.

What time do they offer the lunch specials?

They have weekly specials all day Monday to Friday.

Are these soba noodles gluten free? (Sometimes they're made with a combination of buckwheat -- which is gluten free -- and wheat... just wondering if these were wheat free!)

At the time, I thought that seemed fair enough, but looking back, I'm not so sure. For what was left in the bowl, $30 still felt overpriced. The fish slices were cut extremely thin, and there was really only a single layer of fish, so overall it just wasn't very satisfying. That said, there are still quite a few items on the menu that caught my eye and that I'd like to try. I'm going to chalk this one up to ordering the wrong dish rather than writing the place off completely. One thing that did leave a bad impression, though, was the interaction at the end of the meal. The girl who brought our check wasn't exactly rude, but she seemed visibly annoyed when we asked about using Apple Pay but ended up putting the charge on my card and it felt like asking her to bring over the Apple Pay machine was somehow inconveniencing her. She also didn't bother asking whether I wanted my receipt. Maybe none of it was intentional, but her overall demeanor came across that way and left us ending the meal with a bad taste in our mouths.

All three were excellent, but the Wagyu tartare was the standout. The sauce on it was unreal. Rich, savory, and almost peanut-y in the best way. I would have happily eaten it with a spoon. For mains, my udon was perfectly done with deep flavor and super satisfying. My wife's burger was OUT OF CONTROL. Truly stop talking and just take another bite level good. The interior is beautiful, with plants and art creating a serene atmosphere that somehow matches the menu. Well worth a visit for the setting. The food itself is good, on both occasions I felt the sashimi was well prepared and fresh. Other dishes didn't blow me away; the udon was fine (and it's cool that they bring it over a flame, so that it finishes cooking right in front of you). Overall worth a splurge for the unique experience more than the food, it's a nice place for a relaxing dinner in an intimate setting.

Half of their menu is vegan-friendly. Spoiler alert: they will open a permanent location in June/July! *Chicken Karaage*** This chicken karaage was TO DIE FOR -- the caramelized sugar lemon on the side took it to a whole new level. The boneless chicken was so tender and juicy with a thin deep-fried batter. The meat was extremely refreshing after squeezing the lemon and dipping in honey mustard sauce. * Handrolls - Salmon Yuzu, Tuna, Yellowtail** Y'all need to order their handrolls! The sashimi piece was thick and long enough to cover the vinegar rice. It would be a pain to pick which handroll I like more. They layered up the flavors of each piece with house sauces, shiso leaf, fried leek, avocado etc. Wish they would add a handroll set in the future. *Pork Cutlet Curry The curry was a blend of shredded meat, mashed potatoes, tomatoes and grapes (yes grapes!). The pork loin cutlets were crispy and not heavily breaded. The meat was a bit dry, yet it was cut in thin slices so it didn't bother me much. I found the multigrain rice even more enjoyable than white rice with its crunchiness. *Matcha Crème Brûlée** WE LOVED THIS. Matcha flavor is strong. The caramelized top and creamy matcha custard complemented really well. Trust me, their crème brûlée is the best dessert to finish off your meal. *Vegan Matcha Cheesecake This cheesecake was homey and light. Matcha flavor was tasteable but not very strong. The raspberry compote added a nice touch to it. I liked the crunchy biscuit layer on the bottom. *Yuzu White Peach Sparkling *Virgin Green Tea Mojito Their Japanese-inspired mocktails were great and not too sweet (very rare for mocktails). Starting off with the Agedashi Tofu: Three pieces of tofu in tsuyu sauce. Light and crispy, with a savory but not too salty broth. It came with fried enoki mushrooms. Some grated radish would've been a nice touch. Chicken Karaage: This was my personal favorite. The chicken pieces were tender and juicy, while crispy on the outside. The portion came with a decent amount of chicken which was shareable between three. Shoyu Ramen: Not a standout dish, but seeing as it's not specifically a ramen restaurant, it was standard! Not amazing but not bad. Pork Cutlet Curry: As someone who loves Japanese curry, this hit the spot! Warm flavorful curry with crispy tonkatsu. However, I think it would taste better served with fluffy white rice! Also I think it was served with a side of grapes which was seemed odd unless it's a new food trend I'm unaware of. Overall, would definitely come back! They seem to do fried foods well, hopefully they can introduce tempura or a katsu sando would be amazing.

And I never understood this either. We ordered 3 omakases to share amongst 2 people, and then a ton of a la carte dishes to share. Which were such a beautiful compliment to our omakase dishes. We got the "O" which was a 9 course meal with some cooked and raw options. The agedashi tofu was the worst amongst our group for a weird texture, definitely did not feel like tofu.
