Found myself a few steps below street level tonight like I was entering a secret ramen bunker at Teppen Ramen in Midtown East. Tiny spot, quiet crowd, chopsticks clicking like it's a noodle library. I ordered the Teppen Shio Ramen--their most popular bowl. Salt-based broth with pork and chicken, char-siu pork, egg, mushrooms... basically a bowl that shows up looking like it lifts weights. And somehow it was ready in FIVE minutes. Five. I've waited longer for coffee. First sip of the broth and suddenly all my life problems took a lunch break. Rich, salty, comforting--like a warm hoodie for your soul. The portion? Big enough that I briefly considered canceling dinner tomorrow. Finished strong with mochi ice cream: green tea and peach. Both dangerously good. This isn't the loud "look at me" ramen spot. This is the quiet assassin of ramen joints. Small room, serious noodles, zero nonsense. Great RAMEN!! See my previous reviews. Today I ordered the Mini Gyu -Don as my appetizer--FANTASTIC!!!! Delicious!!! Very Thin ribbons of beef, sweet carmelized onions, red ginger, over soft warm rice...comfort rice is what I felt like I was eating, in terms of that rice, and the deliciousness of the onions and beef. This is really good Ramen and the best part is that this joint is opened pretty late. It's a small place and attracts a younger population. Menu is decent, the the choices for non-pork broth are very limited. I ordered the one with a Veggie broth with Chicken on the side, and the Ramen was very flavorful and spicy, which I love. read more

This is one of the places that has been on my to visit list on Yelp. I went yesterday and I had the Chicken Shoyu. The broth was tasty but I would have liked it to have been hotter. And the flavor was only ok, I really wanted the flavor to be more layered, and I asked for a little spicy but it wasn't. I decided to trek there from Chelsea. First time trying Takoyaki, I have been missing out. Its creamy and the octopus is tender inside with a nice light crispy batter outside. I am fan. Cozy ramen place hidden away from the business. I came in a group of 6, and we were seated immediately on a Friday afternoon. The servers were attentive and friendly. We each got a bowl of ramen which came relatively quickly. I got the Teppen Miso Spicy Ramen, and the broth was very flavorful and rich, but not overly heavy by any means. It wasn't too thick or watered down, and clung to the chewy, bouncy, wavy noodles perfectly. I also enjoyed the ramen egg, although I would've preferred a slightly more molten one. The meat wasn't dry but not super out of the ordinary. I always like the touch of corn to add a hint of sweetness to the dish. The Teppen Shoyu Ramen had thin straight noodles that were nicely cooked and a broth that was lighter and not was heavy/rich if that is your preference. After a super long day a friend and I were craving some Japanese ramen. Normally I would be at Totto ramen but it was far too late and Teppen popped up after a quick Yelp search. For starters we were walking in long past 11pm but the staff were bright and welcoming and also quite inviting. There wasn't anyone else sitting inside at first but a few came after we were seated. The staff are Japanese. The food is delicious. We were served ice water upon sitting and then our orders were taking promptly after that. We didn't have to wait long at all of the food -- if anything it was surprised at how fast it came but then again we were originally the only ones there. While waiting there was Japanese music playing in the background just loud enough to enjoy but not so obnoxiously loud that you can't hear your own conversation. They also had a nice corner with manga books for a light read while passing time. I had the shoyu ramen and it was a solid bowl of ramen I'd definitely come back to have again regardless of the hour of day. The flavor was on point and the serving portion will leave you full and satisfied. It came with straight noodles and the texture was perfect. Overall a great bowl of ramen that ended my day with a win. I regretfully didn't try any other dishes as it was already pretty late but will definitely be coming back for more. The only reason I am giving it 4 instead of 5 stars is because the prices are a bit high (my vegetarian ramen was more expensive than the pork ramen!). Vegetarian ramen is usually a hit or miss but this one had a depth of flavor! I loved the addition of fresh vegetables, they added a nice crunch as well as a unique flavor. The takoyaki had very little tako (octopus). It was mostly dough and there was too much sauce. Almost overpowered by the sauce really.  The ramen itself was good. We had 3 different types - the spicy trepen, the shio and the shoyo. The tonkatsu flavor is the most savory with the shoyu but they all tasted good. The broth is not too thick and not too thin, the eggs are cooked perfectly half boiled - though you have to eat fast because the longer you let it sit, the more cooked it gets.  The salmon don was ok - hard to mess up salmon but the rice was a little too vinegary.   I think if you come here, just focus on the ramen because that really is the highlight and strength of the restaurant. an uninspiring ramen spot that is a bit expensive for what you get. both the food and inside decor were forgettable. i found the ramen broth weirdly creamy instead of light as with normal shio and the shio taste wasnt strong. the egg was also fully cooked through like a regular boiled egg. chashu was ok and I liked that the black fungus was topped dry but the only other topping was scallions. in an age where ramen places dot every few blocks in manhattan, its hard for me to think of a reason to visit this place unless the location is convenient for you. read more

Ramen isn't always on the top of my list for food cravings but Teppen wasn't bad! We ordered the Teppen Shio, Teppen Spicy, and their limited quantity of Dan Dan Ramen. The broth for each of the soups were similar but had a slightly different taste at the same time. I got the Teppen Shio, which wasn't too rich and creamy and also not too salty. Sadly it only came with 2 slices of pork, but was overall just the right amount of food. If you're looking for a quick ramen fix, Teppen would be a good place to try. The service was decent, they didn't bother us too much which is what I prefer. When we were done though, it seemed like they were rushing to get us to leave, as they cleaned up our dishes like 5-10 minutes after they gave our card back to sign off on the tip. I thought that was a bit weird especially since the restaurant wasn't full and usually servers clean up the dishes while you ask for the check. Besides that, the restaurant was kind of small and was located below street level, so if there is a handicapped person or if you have a large stroller for a child, it'll be a bit hard to go down the stairs. I personally wouldn't come here again since I'm not the biggest fan of ramen but it was worth a try. read more
