Anyway, walked in on a whim because of the sheep hanging out by the front door and wanted to check out what it was about. I love soft linens and textures and loved the holy lamb organics blanket. The material was also available in a squishable heart shaped pillow (and a perfect incognito stim item) I got on impulse. There are a few adorable fluffy sheep plushies around the store too. My first time with this company and won't be back. These people don't know their own products. I emailed them to confirm what they carry in store. I spend 1.5 hours drive time to buy it. Yikes! Almost two grand for a queen sized futon. Gone are the days when a college student looked to futons as a less expensive option for bedding. The last one I bought from SH more than a decade ago was a third of today's price. To be fair, I've purchased two futons from them in the last twenty five years. I was hoping to no have to sell a kidney to buy the next. Also, back ten or so years ago, One had the ability to choose mattress thickness. That option appears to no longer be offered and the thickness dimension isn't even listed on the website; email queries have yet to be answered. Some reviews on their own website have describe the latest product as so thin that One can feel the bed slats through it. I'd like to know how thick the current futons are made. read more

This is the second set of mattresses I bought from soaring heart and definitely the last. The great natural bed product but quite finicky mixed with pretty bad customer service. Make sure you rotate this bed often and that you do not expose it to any moisture. If you spill a glass of water or something on it, take it completely apart and make sure that you dry it all the way through. The first set was exposed to a little bit of moisture and quickly molded given the natural consistency of the mattress. I take full responsibility for that and was hoping that buying a second mattress I might get a little bit of a discount or at least they take the old one away. I did receive a 5% discount which covered half of the taxes but have to remove one of the old one on my own. In addition when the new one arrived it was tossed on my deck in a box and they couldn't even bring it inside or be bothered to take away the packing material. How do you spell over $11,000 on two beds. I guess the extra 4 min it takes two delivery people to place it was a lot to ask. read more

I purchased my original Soaring Heart mattress and topper in 2011 and it is still as comfortable as the day it arrived. Appreciating the quality of that mattress, I decided, after having back surgery, to get a second one for my vacation home . A great night's sleep is what I need for healing no matter where I am sleeping. Everyone at Soaring Heart was terrific in helping me choose exactly what would suit me best. I would like to give a special shout out to Annan who arranged the delivery. He was a great communicator, was very respectful of my living space, and carefully switched out the mattress and topper. I am writing my final review for Soaring Heart today after receiving my new queen-sized royale mattress topper an hour ago! It smells fine! There was a bit of a comedy of errors throughout the process of receiving my new mattress topper. (Miscommunications, mistakes, etc.) For a minute I wondered if they were messing with me!! However, I am pleased and relieved to report that I have my new mattress topper, and they now have my old mattress topper in exchange. I spoke with the assistant manager, Kai, two times during this process, and both times she was very helpful and very professional. She also stated that they will try to re-sell my old mattress topper, but they will sell it at a discount, and they will disclose its smell (and the fact that it is very slightly used by me) to potential customers. I respect that openness and I am fully in support of that. It is in perfect condition, other than the smell. There may be some customers who are not bothered by the smell as much as I am. To clarify, I did air out my old mattress topper for weeks with an open window and an air purifier, while sleeping on my couch, to try to see if the smell would dissipate prior to calling Soaring Heart to complain. Not only did the smell not dissipate, it got into my sheets, my underlying featherbed from Cuddledown, and my cotton mattress pad. Fortunately the sheets and the mattress pad are machine washable, and the featherbed may air out since it isn't the original source of the smell. Soaring Heart did offer me a free gift for all of the hassle plus the extra errors during the process, which was kind of them, but I declined. All I wanted was my new mattress pad and some good nights of sleep! I regret that I am not able to give a full five stars to Soaring Heart in my updated review, due to the fact that there really was quite a bit of hassle throughout this process that threw off my sleep and my schedule. However, with their excellent customer service, outstanding truly natural products, and plan to disclose possible smell to future customers (and to implement quality control regarding this particular issue that has bothered some customers, including myself), I think they're well on their way to becoming a 5-star operation. I am honestly rooting for them - everyone was so kind and helpful, and their products are extraordinary and they are such needed products in the marketplace. We have a Soaring Heart futon that was originally my husband's bed. I moved in with my super-huge IKEA mattress and we use that for our bed, but have kept the Soaring Heart futon as a second bed and recently turned it into a futon couch. We stopped in not too long ago to pick up a frame for the futon-couch transition and were treated just as well and promptly as the "new" customers looking to buy the full-meal-deal. The futon is comfortable, just not soft enough for me (I'm a princess-and-the-pea type) as a bed. I love it as a couch, though! The staff were all really knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. My husband said that his experience originally buying the futon was just as enjoyable as our trip to pick up a new frame. I'd definitely recommend stopping in here. read more

I've been sleeping on this bed (tatami, shiki, wool topper) for a year, and I have never slept better in my life. I've gone from a chronic insomniac to someone who looks forward to going to bed early and hates getting up. It takes a little maintenance--flipping and turning regularly, and I put the mattress pieces out on the deck to air and sun a couple of times this summer--but it has been totally worth it. This bed has been the best furniture purchase I have ever made. Well, maybe it ties with the bookshelves... Also, my house is super weather-tight, practically hermetically sealed, which means humidity can sometimes be a problem in winter (i.e. the rainy season). We have a dehumidifier for the house, but I ended up getting a small one to go under the bed after I noticed the tatami going a little fuzzy. There are several affordable Japanese brands made precisely for this purpose, that run quietly and are simple to operate. That and a light rub down with lemon oil and alcohol (NOT furniture oil, but real lemon oil) solved the problem. read more

I've had a Soaring Heart latex bed with a wool topper and cotton mattress pad for over 10 years now and I love it EVERY DAY. It took me awhile to decide to take the plunge and spend the money but it's one of the best purchase decisions I've ever made. It literally was an investment in my health and happiness. I've never slept in a bed so comfortable. It's got the lovely 'give' of a soft bed but all the support you'd want and need. I can't recommend their beds highly enough. For Earth Day-they did a workshop where you got to make your own pillow-organic wool or kapok filling. All proceeds from the pillow workshop went to the Sierra Club. And I took home an organic kapok pillow for a fraction of the retail price! I love the way this company walks their community support talk. Everyone won! LOVE this place. Bought a shikkibutton (murdered that) and tatami mats. Night two, I was in love. Best sleep I've had. I sleep deeper, wake up less. I have back pain and the extra support has been amazing. We also got the wool mattress cover. Several months later our new cat started a habit of peeing on the bed. I would have gifted her away for the holidays had it not been for this protector :) My husband was very hesitant as the plusher the better for him. He forgot we'd even switched. Took me a awhile to remember I can't 'hop' onto the bed like I used, but I'm never looking back. Can't wait to try their pillows. read more

When we bought our Soaring Heart bed in 2008, there were only a couple of reviews on Yelp. Without more feedback, at the time it was a difficult decision to move forward with our purchase. We ended up visiting the store a couple of times before deciding to pull the trigger. We opted for their most popular combination (latex mattress, wool topper, cotton mattress pad). We chose the extra firm latex even though I originally felt most comfortable on the regular firm latex. It ended up being the right decision because the wool topper adds that extra layer of softness I was looking for. It's been over 1.5 years since our purchase and we couldn't be happier. We LOVE our bed! It's far and away the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in. It used to be that I would look forward to staying at the Westin or the Monaco hotels because of their beds. Now I can't wait to get home to my bed. We were a bit worried about how well the wool topper would hold up but so far, it's in fabulous shape. We wash the mattress pad (or at a minimum dry it) about once or twice a month and flip the topper at the same time. It's recommended to do this multiple times a month (once a week?) but our method and frequency works fine for us. My husband has severe allergies and it's really made a difference sleeping on wool, which is naturally hypoallergenic (and fire-retardant, btw). If I had to do it over again (and we will in another 10 years give or take), I will definitely invest in Soaring Heart. read more

Needed a futon and needed it fast for visitors! Soaring Heart made it happen. Dropped in the store on Sunday and got a new futon and futon mattress for Thursday delivery. The service was superb: super helpful without being pushy at all. And the futons -- well, they take their futons seriously! They are really comfortable and made locally with natural materials. There was one small mixup where they forgot to call us about a futon cover we ordered that had a three week turn around, but after we inquired about it they were prompt in correcting it. It would, of course, have been better service if they hadn't made the mistake to begin with ... but I'm still impressed with the company and how they handled the mixup all the same, and would recommend them to anyone (as long as they're willing to splurge a bit on futons!). read more

They recently rebuilt a wool pillow I'd purchased there several years ago. The service was slow in that it took more days to complete that I was led to believe when I called and dropped it off, but in the end the pillow is much better now. The price was reasonable. That was a week ago--I thought I'd sleep on it before writing this review. We also purchased our natural foam mattress and wool topper there and both have served us well. I've basically been a customer the whole time I've lived in Seattle, since the 1980s. After thinking about it for only 45 years, I bought a traditional cotton shikibuton yesterday & slept on it in my tatami room last night. Although I'm not as physically whole as I was 45 years ago, it was the same pure, delicious sleeping experience I remember. Then I folded up my bedding and piled it in the corner of the room. I'll roll it out again tonight when I'm ready to sleep. Simple. Civilized. Keep in mind: A shikibuton is not at all the same as an American futon, which is much like sleeping on a sack of cement powder after the first few months, regardless of how much you beat & turn the darn thing. It's also totally unlike a traditional American mattress of any kind. But if you are looking for the traditional Japanese sleep experience, Soaring Heart is your only choice. (Believe me. I spent 45 years researching it.) The staff is happy to let you test the bedding, so if you weren't lucky enough to experience it in Japan, do try it out. You'll have to go elsewhere for your buckwheat roll pillows, your kakebuton, & your futon cover in traditional Japanese fabrics, nor do the staff know where to find them -- which explains the 4 instead of 5 stars. So as part of a wedding gift my husband and I just got our 6" classic latex mattress, wool topper, and cotton pad. This is the most awesome mattress EVER. Although I did not buy a mattress from these guys, they do have an interesting range of mattresses in both regular cotton and with wool and latex. They are more expensive, but not double the price or anything. Plus: they are made here in Seattle and seem sturdy. Their frames are realllllly nice. Most are not the usual jack-knife folding variety, but rather elegant wood designs. Their futon covers are made with intricate and durable fabrics, not just the usual solid red/white/blue/black. read more

Do not, I repeat, do not buy one of the fabric covered bed frames and headboards that Soaring Heart carries. A third party does them for SH and it's unbelievable how inferior this product is. And for the money! You have to screw the legs into the bed and the frame to the bed. The legs don't align or screw in and stay. Likewise the bolts are the wrong size for the holes in the frame and do not tighten. We could make different holes and use different screws but then you run the risk of ruining the fabric and the bed is made from pine (a very soft wood). Both my husband and brother in law have spent countless hours trying to "rig" the thing together and I don't think it's possible. After waiting close to 5 months to receive a new bed and mattress, I'm exhausted, overwhelmed and saddened by how terrible my luck has been. If I could go back and do this again- I would not be a Soaring Heart customer. (I was so optimistic at the start). read more

We purchased a bed frame from Soaring Heart about a year and a half ago. It is gorgeous and sturdy and wonderful, and I love it. But the thing is when we moved last week, our movers rushed setting it back up, did so incorrectly, missed installing a few screws, and in the middle of the night last night, the entire bed frame collapsed. I called Soaring Heart in the morning at 10, and they had someone at my house by the afternoon to change out the broken hardware and help us put it back together. That kind of customer service is amazing and I am thrilled that we chose to buy our frame there. read more

I've had a bad back for years. After spending years and $$$ on bed after bed trying to find one that let me sleep in reasonable peace, I finally bit the bullet and invested in a Soaring Heart shikibuton. I went with the 3" solid natural latex with the 4" wool wrapped cotton on top. I added a buckwheat hull pillow and a pine slat frame to put it all on. Bottom line is I've never slept better! I've had this set up for about 2 years now and the only plans I have in the future is to have Soaring Heart rebuild the top layer when the time comes (I think they say every 10 years or so). The wool in the top mattress acts as a temperature regulator helping keep me from overheating in the summer, and it's a great insulating layer in the winter (and I live in a basement so I feel those extremes more). And buckwheat makes the best pillow ever, bar none! I have nothing but good things to say about Soaring Heart, the product is a bit pricey, but you're getting a locally produced, green product that the company stands behind. To me that's worth paying a little more for. read more

What happened to this place? Prices have tripled even for simple basics like shikifutons. And their website is sketchy and slick, full of tricky bait-and-switch pricing. Eg a wool topper is advertised as $500 marked down from $910...looks good right? But actually if you click the link it's just a baby crib topper marked down from $550. The $910 is for the Cal King, and that's only marked down to $860. The whole website is like that. Also. Soaring Heart's claim that the birds their down comes from are "unharmed in the process." Come on. For $250 comforters, the down is either live-plucked or comes from dead birds slaughtered for meat. The actual manufacturer says their down is from Hungary and not live-plucked. So that means dead birds. I guess it is technically true that no birds are harmed, because they are already dead. Which is fine. But stop with the sanctimonious greenwashing like magical down which "doesn't hurt the birds." I mean, what other tall tales are they telling? All this combined with the other recent reviews (less stuffing in pillows now?) has changed my opinion of this company. Not confidence-inspiring to say the least. What a shame. If I'd written this review within the first month or two of purchasing our mattress and topper from Soaring Heart it would have been five stars. After almost 3 years my opinion has changed dramatically based on how they have aged and performed over time. We spent over $3k on a king sized latex mattress and wool topper. For a while it was like a tantric sleep experience - non-stop delight. Some of the best nights of sleep of my life. After a month or so there was a bit of an indent where I normally sleep. We flipped and rotated the topper and mattress as recommended. Things were fine. Then after a few rotations the pits became worse and no matter how your flipped or turned it you were always sleeping in a rut or rolling over up again a high spot. The first winter we noticed we both had persistent colds, and when it came time to flip the mattress there was mold growing on the cover surrounding the mattress. We removed it and air-dried the mattress, which had been absorbing ambient moisture (presumably due to condensation, although I don't quite understand why or how this would occur - never happened with our old mattress). Regardless, the moldy cover required washing. After washing it cold we dried it on the lowest setting. It was winter and there was simply no other option to effectively dry something as bulky in short enough time to keep it from becoming musty. The cover shrunk to the point where it would no longer fit on the mattress. The cover is not very flexible and it would simply no longer fit. The idea that it hadn't been pre-shrunk in retrospect seems unbelievable, but at the time my wife called Soaring Heart and asked if they could help us. She was told we'd have to buy a new one. Even after politely explaining that we'd made every attempt to be careful with the cover they were not willing to make good on what it seemed very reasonable to label a defective product. At that point we were becoming unhappy with the bed itself and felt like it was a sunk cost so we were hesitant to spend more money on another cover we couldn't ever wash. The problem then became that moving the latex mattress without the cover simply causes it to rip, it is very fragile under anything but compression. Try to pull it and it simply comes apart. After a year there were dramatic divets where we both slept, on all sides. Even my wife, who weighs about 115 pounds, caused compression in the mattress and topper that made a "valley" where she would sleep. Two years later and we have the worst sleep quality of our lives and are ready to buy a new mattress. We recently turned the fancy topper into a dog bed. Our dogs have no complaints, but I'd like my $3500 back. read more

The price made my eyes roll back (hence four stars) but still being able to rave about my mattress this many years later as well as looking forward to getting into my own bed pretty much every night made it worth it. This is one of only 2 companies we found that make a true "Japanese" style futon - in other words, one that is thinner than the typical heavy bulky thick ones sold all over the place. These actually will fold or roll up easily and fit into a closet. We've used ours daily for a couple of months and have no complaints at all. Service was excellent - we made a mistake on an accessory and they took the return and replaced it with what we wanted very quickly and no questions asked. We put moderately priced because they are so rare, we felt like it was well worth it - also the materials feel like they are high-quality. Highly recommended based on our experience. read more

Once upon a time I would have been seriously put off at the idea of sleeping on a 'rubber' mattress. I have a wicked latex allergy - skin contact, but even the samples they sent me didn't bother me a bit. There is a lovely layer of wool batting around the latex and then the luscious organic cotton casing. Workmanship is beautiful. Truly hate to have to cover all this beauty. Live and learn - this is the good stuff. After too long on a bad mattress, one was a memory foam and the other a big S brand that failed far too soon - they don't make them like they ysed to.The memory foam made me sick and the S brand ended up being like a box of rocks. I finally decided to do some serious research on the subject of mattresses and was blown away at all the junk we are expected to spend 1/3 of our life on. The Soaring Heart team put together a gorgeous organic latex mattress, foundation and I added a topper to that. We sleep like we should now! Does it smell? No Is it hard? No Is is cheap? No - - but it's worth every penny to get good sleep and know that you are not breathing in flame retardents and other nasty chemicals. Is it comfortable? Oh my YES!!! These guys have what you need for a good nights sleep - they're even nice! Oh - the pillows are - well, just don't try to take my wool bolus pillow because you will have a fight on your hands. It is 'da bomb' - best pillow I've had in my life (I've had a lot of pillows). Take a look at their products, test them if you can - I took a leap of faith. Everything they offer is top notch. We can't speak highly enough of soaring heart and their fantastic customer service. We have tried numerous bed options for my wife who has had major back and shoulder injuries. We found our "forever" bed at soaring heart. The best part is that the bed has no cancer causing chemicals so common in mattresses and the flame retardant chemicals they soak them with. Beyond the bed the customer service was amazing. Kim spent literally hours with us, deconstructing floor models and helping us build the perfect bed. I have been a fan of Soaring Heart for many years since the closing of Private Cloud in the 90s. Mostly it's due to their attention to detail and the fact that they build their own futons locally. However recently I had an issue with a frame that I bought several years ago and they were able to fix it! Purchased 3 pillows, over $600, took 1 with us and other 2 had to be ordered and shipped to us. Weeks went by and no pillows arrived. Nobody responded to my inquiry emails. Finally called and they said my pillows were shipped somewhere else. Cancelled and got a refund. The $200 pillow we did take home was the side sleeper with wool bolus fill - worst pillow I ever tried to sleep on - extremely scratchy and poky on the skin. Too far away to drive back and return. Giving only 1 star because they charged me before shipping and never responded to my emails. read more
