(review is very late, but started…read morethinking as I saw ads for them on Facebook regularly, people need to be aware of their practice) apparently they didn't tighten the steering knuckle lower 2 bolts on my Tacoma, clearly before I left I saw a thread sticking out on the lower control arm bolts, didn't say anything as I'd thought they'd honor their work, and thought they possibly even messed up the threads on that bolt that was loose which is why it didn't go all the way in, (as a mechanic I'm not going to touch something I'm afraid will break which would turn to my fault, liability is pretty important in the automotive service industry) they reassured me before I left that everything was perfect even though the skid plate wasn't installed as well until I said something, then within less than 6000 miles down the road and within less than a 6 month period, lower control arm came loose and went straight to the floor, took it back to them with a tow truck and they charged me for the labor to replace a lifetime warranty part from rough country as well as a CV axle that got damage due to collateral damage from the bolt coming loose. Clearly they didn't tighten the bolt with their response as "we loctite everything" well loctite only goes a long way when the bolt is torqued with a torqued wrench. A real shop would've comp everything and own up to their mistake and repair it for free due to technician negligence. But that didn't happen, rather just down another couple hundred dollars, around $800-1,000 to fix their mistake. But I mean the lifetime part was free which was great, one company at least honored something. Never coming back here again, neither will ever be involved with this shop ever again. Still have my receipt and can easily warranty stuff yourself on rough country website. Wasn't going to argue with these guys in person as they're pretty intimidated and aggressive when you put them on the spot. So it's easier to result in online reviews and let people know their practice as they're also firm with whatever they say with no room for talk or solution unless I'm guessing legal action is taken or a harsh review is made. They honestly just hungry for money, made the victim an even bigger one.

My uncle (who specializes in Toyota and Honda) usually diagnoses and fixes my car, and if he can't fix it, I'll take it to our friend's shop. My uncle was off-island at the time, and I didn't want to drive my car to my friend's shop since I didn't want to be stuck in Kalihi if it breaks down before I can fix it. I try to support local as much as possible so I decided to try out Hokama Auto Repair because it was near my job and I know it's a family business. First off, I was grateful they were able to look at my car without an appointment. Since I worked nearby, I was able to leave my car there all day. The mechanic, Chris, was nice and took the time to explain what was going on with my car. However, I was charged $95 just for diagnosing and replacing battery clamps, which seemed excessive. Another thing I noticed is that this shop is one of the last businesses left that is still strict about masks and COVID habits, which is weird to me at this point. The biggest issue for me was the price. I was quoted $950 for a new starter, but I found a mobile repair guy who did the job for $575. Now, I studied business enough to understand that because the mobile repair guy doesn't own a shop and works alone, he saves on overhead expenses, which allows him to charge less. The $950 I would pay Hokama pays for their rent, electricity, receptionist(s), etc. However, many people helped me break down the cost of a new starter, and it really seemed like I was being way overcharged for labor. I do want to add that Chris did give me alternatives to make the cost cheaper or even going through warranty! So at the end of the day, I do feel like he is an honest mechanic. While the service was friendly and convenient, the cost was just too high for me to justify coming back, especially when there are more affordable options available. That said, I'm still willing to return to this shop and give them another chance, but I will be asking for an itemized receipt so I can see the breakdown of every charge and how much labor is costing per hour.

Tried a few shops at Kaka'ako but once they see the M, they tact on that M tax. Thanks to Kimo - I've found a trustworthy shop! Booking your auto service is easy. David is responsive via text/email but text if preferred. He kept me updated on the work and pointed out anything concerning. Had brake flush and front drive shaft inspected on the X5M as well as oil change for wife's car Excellent service. Honest work. Good communication. Despite the drive from Kaka'ako, I'll taking our cars here for maintenance and service.

The clerk was aloha friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating. After thoroughly inspecting the car, he made several recommendations for our classic car and explained the needs. We replaced a required lightbulb so the car would pass inspection. I highly recommend SMP if you need service for your bike or inspection for your vehicle. Parking is limited and difficult to find in the complex. Probably it's best to call for an appointment.
