This was my wife and my first time visiting Snuff Mill restaurant. The restaurant is perfect in every aspect! We visited for a lunch and everything from the drinks, an interesting special brewed iced tea and a glass of red, the focaccia with bone marrow butter, the filet mignon and the waygu flat iron steaks were some of the most delicious properly cooked and seasoned steaks we have ever eaten. The food alone makes this the best steakhouse in Delaware and you throw in fantastic service from our wonderful waiter and they hit on every note. Thank you for our fantastic experience!! read more

Definitely up there among the better restaurants in the Wilmington area. It didn't displace my top 2 (La Fia and Le Fête) but I enjoyed Snuff Mill more than Bardea. What didn't do it for me at Snuff Mill: (1) The aged NY strip was just ok; I've had more tender steaks at random chains. (2) None of my 3 cocktails was a homerun. (3) Seems like the reservation system is deliberately wonky (nothing available online for the day I wanted but no problem when I phoned). (4) I've had better meals for half and even one-third the price. Service was professional and attentive. The dining room size is small and might inhibit conversation, but you'll be fine once the alcohol kicks in. I would certainly go back--there were lots of other things on the food and drink menu that looked good--but probably not anytime soon. My cousin and I shared it and we ate every bite. It came in a big plate with carrots and potatoes and green beans. It was so much food, but it was so good. We ate at all. Absolutely amazing experience. The oysters were in pristine condition and served beautifully. Cocktail was elegant and delicious, it came with a sea salt foam on top and reminded me of the beach. The bone marrow was very savory, and the bread toasted crisp. The bar only has 4 seats, so finding seating can be difficult without a reservation. The service was great, they let me sit and wait at the front while seats at the bar opened up. It feels small and intimate, while also feeling packed. Had good conversations at the bar with other patrons, everyone seemed to be enjoying their experience at Snuff Mill. Expensive, but definitely worth the price. read more

Okay, so I typically LOVE Snuff Mill and would usually call it a 5 star experience, but had one concern on my most recent visit for which I had to dock a star... but everything else was fabulous. My friend and I arrived a bit early for our reservation, but were quickly greeted and offered a beverage menu. Their cocktail options are creative and constantly changing, often featuring some unique foam toppers. On this particular occasion, I started with the Strawberry Kiwi Spice Margarita, which included some cardamom to add depth and warmth to the fruity drink. I also ordered the Apricot Ginger Sour, a consistent favorite bourbon cocktail with a little zing from the lemon foam on top. Both drinks were excellent. For starters, we selected a few of the fresh oysters as well as a scallop special made with a lemon beurre blanc. The scallops were perfectly cooked, and I was grateful the dish came with sourdough to sop up every last drop of that delicious beurre blanc. My entree was where things went awry. I tend toward pescetarian options and selected the lone fish on the menu that night: skate wing. My first few bites were great, though slightly oversalted. However, eventually the mouthfeel evolved into a burning, ammonia taste, and I unfortunately wasn't able to finish the dish. My friend who also had the skate wing, however, did not have that experience (and I tried a bite of hers to confirm, too!). I know skate wing can be tricky to prepare and this is a known potential issue, but it was disappointing. Luckily, dessert was fabulous once again --- we chose the coconut creme brulee which was delightful. I'm sure I'll be back. Just no skate wing for me! read more

I've gone to Snuff Mill twice for their Dunch menu. The wait staff is amazing and the hostess is a bit odd. She kept several parties waiting to be seated to figure out the computer seating program. One lady was left standing with her cane for 5 minutes with empty tables and no diners waiting. People first. The hamburgers are amazing! Oysters are wonderful! Try the chefs choice appetizer of six! Several delicious sauces accompanied the oysters. I noticed everyone seemed to know each other there, so a super friendly place. One woman at the bar by herself was celebrating a new job with the staff. Another gentleman who also sat at the bar was known by everyone and greeted enthusiastically! However, my friend and I decided to eat outside because it was such a beautiful day. Unfortunately, I forgot our waitresses name but she was amazing! So friendly and cheerful. She gave us recommendations and explained everything on the menu in great detail. And finally the best part of the dining experience... the food. Every item that we ordered was incredible. The crab bisque was a perfect appetizer, so creamy and flavorful. We also ordered their house-made focaccia bread for the table and let me tell you... it was the best focaccia bread that I have ever tasted. So warm, crisp, and buttery and it was accompanied by a brown sugary butter that was both sweet and savory. Our entrees were absolutely delicious. My friend enjoyed a Spicy Nashville Chicken Sandwich with French fries. I ordered the house-made ricotta gnocchi which was prepared in a delectable peach and prosecco compote mixed with heirloom vine-ripened tomatoes and crispy prosciutto. My mouth is watering just from typing this. Snuff Mill also had an extensive wine and cocktail menu however my friend and I went with their local beer from Wilmington Brew Works which complimented the meal perfectly. I finished the meal off with their peach cheesecake that was highly recommended by our waitress. I haven't been dining out much lately because it's so expensive and the quality of food has gone downhill at many places but Snuff Mill had me falling in love all over again with dining out. My friend and I had lunch at Snuff Mill a few weeks ago when we visited Wilmington for the day. I absolutely loved our lunch. The restaurant is such a hidden gem. It's located in a sort of strip mall - although one with some charm. But then you walk into this tiny restaurant, and it has so much charm and great ambiance. It has tiny, cozy bistro vibes. And when I saw that butcher counter, I knew we were in for a great meal! We shared an order of their carpet bagger (flash-fried local oysters, shaved filet mignon, thick cut bacon, Roquefort cheese, and jalapeno ranch - 3, served on soup spoons), the special soup of the day (it was a chilled soup, but I can't remember the ingredients now), the stone fruit salad (arugula, radicchio, stone fruit, bacon, marcona almonds, watermelon radish, pecorino, cherries, and apple-lemon-poppyseed dressing), and their signature beef burger with bacon, sauteed Vidalia onions, American cheese, dill pickles, and special sauce). All the food was really good - delicious from start to finish. And their menu is so great, we really struggled with what to order! (I'd happily return to try more off their menus after trying these four dishes on our first visit!) They also had great drinks. We started with two of one of their summery cocktails, which were so refreshing with lunch on a hot day. We also had a couple of glasses of wine from their great wine list. The service was so great and really added to our experience. We didn't have a reservation for lunch, and they were really packed (it was a Monday holiday, so there were a lot of people out and about for a weekday, plus it seems like a really great place for a business/work lunch), but they found a table for us. And the service was so amazing from start to finish. We had intended to visit a museum in the early afternoon, we were having such a good experience/meal that we hovered and didn't make it to the museum. What a gem in Wilmington! A friend and I stopped in for lunch sans reservation on a holiday and it was bumping! The staff was so friendly - they set up a table for us and got us seated rather quickly. The interior was a contrast to the strip mall it's in. We had planned to make it a quickish lunch but we were having so much fun we were there for an hour and a half. But we weren't the only ones that lingered. It's also a smaller kitchen and restaurant so the food took a bit of time but the staff coursed the items out perfectly. We started with the carpet bagger, a fried oyster and pieces of their million dollar bacon, and their soup of the day a chilled cucumber and melon and jalapeño soup. The gin cantaloupe cocktail was refreshing on the hot day. And we each got a glass of white wine - I loved their Chablis (it was $23 a glass! ). The burger was the highlight and one I would eat again and again. It was a perfect sized on the smaller end but perfect for sharing since we also got the stone fruits salad to share. The salad lacked in fruit and was more greens which was delicious as it was perfectly dressed with bits of watermelon radish. My only complaint is the pecorino cheese pieces were too big. Wonderful cozy restaurant with the cutest table setting - I would for sure some back and evidently the burger is $13 on Thursday for lunch! read more

The restaurant is very cool and we enjoyed our meal. The drinks were proper. The food was tasty - shrimp cocktail perfect, Caesar salad delicious. My wife loved her crab cakes. My steak was tender but missing a good char. I suspected it was cooked sous vide but it was not ( there was no need to put my napkin up to protect from butter flying off the meat as there was no such experience). Also not having A1 or Lea and Perin Steak Sauce is a choice to give custom accompaniments but I don't agree - it would have made my meal taste much more to my liking. As soon as I walked into Snuff Mill, I experienced two positive aspects. First, the cozy space was joyous, not quite raucuous. The room had that buzz of conversation. People were having a great time on a Wednesday at 7pm. Second, the maitre'd was friendly and said, you must be my solo diner. I was. He offered me the last seat at the bar or a table, and he was genuinely open to whatever choice I made. I had researched. I have set foot in Wilmington maybe three times in my life. I have never eaten dinner there. I was passing through, en route from Philadelphia to Washington, D.C. -- it had to do with the former having a car rental office open later than the latter, and the logistics; I had to do something suboptimal, switch from Amtrak to a motor vehicle to finish my trip which had originated in New York City. Everything I saw, including reviews here, suggested this restaurant is among the best in town or maybe even the ranked at the very top. When I sat down, there was another singleton, who had grown up in the area and came for business every month. She seemed to be a regular. I asked her. She said, yup, this is the place. The menu was intriguing. The cocktails included novel items that were not in the novelty category. The wine list was sophisticated but not priced out of range. I started with the carpetbagger. I believe, incidentally, the term is less pejorative than before. It comes from the Reconstruction era, a disparagement of former Confederates for Yankees (as scalawag was the term for Southerners who were collaborating), which means it was anti-civil rights and pro-Jim Crow. The dictionary says it just means an outsider or perceived newcomer running for political office. Regardless, the dish is oysters that have been breaded and fried, topped with filet mignon, bacon, Roquefort, and ranch dressing. There are three. I couldn't figure out from the menu what the form factor was. Just imagine fried oysters with a topping; 80% of the mass is the shellfish, 20% the other stuff. I also had a half dozen local oysters at their special price. I've become much more cautious about raw delicacies. These were appropriately very cold. I had no concern (one of the six had that flavor I'd say, from 40 plus years consuming the bivalves indicates not that it is bad but that it just isn't as tasty -- if you eat these things, you know what I mean, that one in a serving won't be as delicious). I was famished. I ordered foccacia, anticipating leftovers. I ate half of the little pan, with the butter infused with bone marrow. The bartender was one of those bartenders whom I think of as, now that guy's a pro, and he makes the job seem like what I'd aspire to in retirement. Knowledgeable, friendly, efficient, with good recommendations. I'd like to return to try other offerings, with my wife or others, in order to share. read more

The food and entire experience at Snuff Mill was excellent. From the ambiance to the service to the apps, entrees, and desserts, everything was perfect. We started with the sunchokes, lamb kebab, artichoke, & razor clams for an appetizer. All were fabulous but I think the artichoke was my favorite, especially with the sauce. We followed up with the blood orange salad which was delicious. The blood oranges & pecans really elevated it. For my entree, I had the burger, which was cooked to perfection & accompanied by amazingly done fries. Like, most fries are good, but few stand out, and these truly did. My boyfriend had the filet mignon which was delicious. Finally, I finished with the strawberry (seasonal) crème brûlée & my boyfriend had the yuzu cheesecake. I've had the pleasure of dining at this groovy restaurant. I can't say enough about how much I loved my experiences. The service was impeccable. The quality and presentation was exceptional. My filet was perfectly cooked. The accoutrements were divine and the sauces were liquid gold. The Duck Fat Donut (not loving the name) was presented in the most dramatic way. It was spectacular. The taste,texture and melt in your mouth flavor was beyond extraordinary. Then, lunch. The burger was one of the best burgers I've ever tasted in my life and I'm 58 and had many many burgers. I also tried the table side Iced Tea. I loved every single sip. The Peach Cheesecake which is seasonal was so light and creamy, not overly sweet with the vanilla bean whipped cream on top made for the perfect ending. My compliments to the chef and staff. My husband and I moved to Delaware from NYC in 2022 and have been reluctant to try restaurants here. Near us, we have a decent tavern for lunch and a decent breakfast spot. Nothing worth a fancy date night. Until last night. Snuff Mill was amazing from the moment we stepped out of the car. You could smell the steaks in the air! The outdoor seating was thoughtful and charming. Bill, the owner, was outside and welcomed us like we were old friends he was delighted to see again. Inside, the restaurant was cozy and inviting, with equally welcoming staff. The ambiance and decor were modern and cool. Everything from the dishtowel napkins, farmhouse style plates, and celebratory sparklers to the butcher case, chalkboard wall, and soft lighting were perfectly appointed. The food. Oh my god, the food. We started with the fried artichokes with caper aioli and the house made focaccia with fig mascarpone (and we got the whole roasted garlic because that's never wrong). We could have licked the plate clean with the artichokes. The focaccia was light and flavorful and the fig mascarpone I would have been happy to order by the tub!! For our main dish, we ordered one of the specials - the porterhouse steak, medium rare with truffle butter. It came with roasted fingerling potatoes, haricot verts, and pearl onions. We couldn't pass up the truffle creamed corn as a side either and wow, that was one of the best things I've eaten. The steak was perfectly cooked. It was flavorful and tender and enough food that we have dinner (possibly even lunch) for another day(s)! For dessert we ordered the sticky toffee pudding with million dollar bacon and the seasonal fresh peach creme brûlée. We intended on having a few bites but they were both so good that we finished them both! If I had to give one critique, I wanted a bit more salt on the haricot verts and carrots, but I'm a salty person. There were multiple celebrations at the restaurant and everyone got these fun sparklers with their respective desserts. The atmosphere was fun and inclusive. At the end of our meal our server and the owner both stood to talk with us and invite us back. The whole experience was extraordinary. If I could give more than five stars, I would. This used to be one of my favorite restaurants....For special occasions, celebrations, and a great night out. My, how far this restaurant has fallen down. I went there for lunch with friends to celebrate two birthdays and had one of the worst dining experiences of my life. The Spicy Nashville Chicken Sandwich was an atrocity. It was two small, burnt, flat, lumps of breading (about an 1.5 inches across a piece) that we couldn't get a knife or fork through. Im not even sure it had any chicken in it. Two small pieces of charcoal like substances about half the size of the roll it was served on. Did the chef look at this and think it was acceptable? Why didn't the server realize that what she was serving was burnt, less than 1/2 the size of the normal sandwich, and not acceptable or edible. The manager came over apologized and said that what was served was not acceptable and that he would take "take care of it". No one was sure what he was going to do, but he disappeared for 10-15 minutes while most of us ate our meals. He could have offered my friend an appetizer since he didn't have a meal. He could have told us he was preparing another meal but none of this happened -- just silence. The waitress also agree that the sandwich that was served was un acceptable, but said nothing else and went in the back. Because my friend didn't have anything to eat all meal, someone at the table gave him their their side salad, and shortly after that the server brought him out another side salad -- so he had two side salads to eat for the meal. No explanation of what they were doing, no opportunity to order an appetizer, or something else -- just silence. About 15 minutes later, we finally got another chicken sandwich, while we were all in the middle of dessert. We boxed it up as the meal was over. It was actually an incredible looking sandwich but the meal was kind of ruined and the server and manager seemed baffled, decided to freeze, and left us hanging. That night we also realized that we didn't get served one of the appetizers that we ordered (and paid for). And it is not like the restaurant was busy. We were the first table seated for lunch and there were only about 1 or 2 other table seated after us. This used to be an amazing place with amazing food and service. The server and manager had many opportunities to fix this meal and celebration and failed. I'm sad that I need to cross this place off my list, but there are much better places at this price point. read more
