    Savory ranch beans

I'm not a bbq spot person because I myself bbq and I like mine! I'm in Mariposa for work and my hotel is right next-door to this place so it's a convenient walking distance. That's all I'd give it a try the first night just to see how it was. I was impressed and decided to have it on night too as well.. my stomach's a little sensitive so I decided to go with a salad on the second night and OMG this place is exceeded by expectations. The brisket sandwich and Jojo potatoes were amazing. The salad with the tri-tip was good, but after adding their homemade pickled jalapeños and a side of their savory ranch beans...... I ate way too much! Have a feeling I'll be back there for the remainder of the trip. So freaking good.

I recently visited Mariposa on a family trip. We smelled the BBQ and had to stop. The place was packed, so I assumed it would be good, but the wait was extremely long- like 40 minutes. What really disappointed me, though, was the service. The man I'm guessing was the owner upcharged me because I ordered a kids' meal--for an actual child. He added $3 simply because he didn't see a child standing with me. He then proceeded to ask the rest of my party, as they ordered, whether there was in fact a child with us rudely. I was honestly shocked by his bedside manner and how the situation was handled. We ordered the ribs plate, and it was great food- wouldn't say the best barbecue, but good none the less, would not go back because of the whole experience.

Delicious BBQ in Mariposa. We had the 3 meat plate and shared with my husband. Definitely enough food for two. The servers were polite, very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. We stayed outside to enjoy the amazing smell of the smoker! The side of corn is a must try! The chili beans was tasty.. and their bbq sauces were delicious! So far everything we had was yummy. There is a sitting area inside too and the bathroom was clean. Definitely coming back!

Cali Sauce on your Frito Pie and Jojos! We were in Mariposa with friends and decided to try out Smokin Oak BBQ. Our group tried the frito pie with pulled pork, 2 meat combo, pulled pork sandwich and loaded baked potato. We really enjoyed the brisket, it was tender and juicy. The pulled pork was definitely a favorite, nice tender chunks of pork and just a light coating of sauce. The potato salad was creamy, but did need a smidgen of salt. The macncheese was chessy and delicious. The loaded baked potato wasn't on the menu, but they had 1 left! The jojo potatoes are wedges of potato with a drizzle of their white bbq sauce. The staff were very friendly and answered all our questions when ordering. The have outside seating or you can take your food over to the tap room next door, Twisted Cedar Tap House. See my separate review on that. We would go back for sure go back!

The loaded mac & cheese is fantastic. The tri-tip sandwich special was outstanding. My son appreciated the tomatoes. The pulled pork was wonderful in the flavor department. They had a line out the door, which is a good sign, but which also means you're going to wait a little bit. The nice thing is the food was relatively quick in being delivered. Next-door is the Twisted Cedar taphouse which has mead on tap and a variety of beers in the fridge, which is important to me because I like stouts. Stoutcast.com and Thespitter.com for you baseball fans. The people are friendly and you'll meet people from all over the world. Making a half order available would be good and a side salad, too.

Workers were very friendly and the food was great!! Looked a little small inside but we took our food to go and ate at home. They close as soon as they sell out so plan on eating sooner than later! I got the brisket loaded Mac and it was so yummy!!

We parked right at the front with the gravel and got our names put down for two people. The hostess was very nice and gave us a buzzer for when our table would be ready. It took no more than 5 minutes before it buzzed and we got in. The restaurant itself is very cozy and decorated well. We sat at a table that used hanging doors as dividers, which we thought was a neat idea. The lighting was nice, not too bright but also not super dim. Our server told us about some specials and also recommended a few different meals. We took up her offer on fries and went with that. Even though it technically was a shareable, it was a huge serving! The fries were perfectly crunchy with a soft interior. The steak was also really juicy and tender, not too chewy at all. The sauces and cheese mixed in with the fries were also the perfect balance of salty, crunchy goodness. The salmon was deliciously soft and moist. They paired very nicely with the creamy mashed potatoes and steamed broccoli. We worked together to just barely finished the salmon and take most of the steak and fries home for leftovers. If you are in the area, I definitely recommend this spot! The quality and amount of food makes the price worth it. If we're ever visiting the area again, we'll definitely stop by 1850!

A special thank you to Sheila, who was not even our server but kept checking on us, answering questions, and making us feel welcome. I honestly thought she might be an owner because she cared that much. The over all atmosphere was welcoming and like everyone knew you or was willing to get to know you. I had the Steak House Burger and could only eat half because it was huge. My girlfriend had the 1850 Fries loaded with steak, cheese, parmesan, garlic, and more, and they were amazing. You simply must eat here. I also included a photo with Sheila and my friend Kevin who also had joined us for the meal.

Cute restaurant, like a old house transformed, really only smelled like an old house in the tiny narrow bathrooms Service was absolutely fantastic, everyone we interacted with was so lovely. They all seemed to know everyone who was dining there, we were for sure the out of towners. I had a filet with side salad and baked potato. The vegetable side was well seasoned and cooked well. Basic side dish but done so well I ate them all. The thought that went into making my baked potato ready to scoop out was a small thought but I appreciated it! Even my salad was cold, crispy and crunchy. The bread on the table was delicious. My stake was yummy and loved the jus and mushrooms served with them. Hubs had the prime rib, he said it was one of the best ones he had in a long times he had the clam chowder to start and it was super tasty!!! Glad we had my birthday meal here!

Charles Street Dinner House, Mariposa: 2026 Mar 12 (4 of 5)…read more Let me start off by saying that we were extremely pleased with the service, thanks to Dillon (who showed genuine rapport), Tomben (his honest opinions) and Amya (who brought me piping hot water in a beautiful mug and teapot). Their friendly, yet professional attitude make this eatery stand out. (5 of 5) This eatery has a vintage feel and historical charm. We felt we could really relax and take our time instead of being rushed to order, eat, then leave. The atmosphere feels rustic, exposing the past. It was a time capsule for folks who enjoyed that era. FOOD: Sauteed Mushroom Soup: The soup arrived with garlic bread. The soup had an earthy, savoury and nutty texture. The rich, velvety mushrooms were bouncy and cooked well, while the umami-packed broth felt comforting. The garlic bread that accompanied the mushroom soup had a perfect balance of textures - heavily buttered, with savoury garlic flavour. The golden-brown, crispy exterior was not overly toasted and the sticks were enhanced with a touch of herbal flavour. (5 of 5) New Zealand Rack of Lamb: This was my order - cooked medium-rare. The perfectly cooked meat was tender - unfortunately lacked seasoning, but a dash of salt brought this to a perfect 5. (5 of 5) I had a choice of potatoes or rice pilaf and made a wrong decision. The rice pilaf looked like baby food, and the fresh red pepper over-powered the entire dish. I tried a small scoop and was disappointed. Needless to say, I couldn't eat another bite of the rice. (1 of 5) My vegetables were mostly cooked well. They had a bit of crunch and texture but not raw. My dinner came with Tomato Soup. The soup tasted nutty and lemony, with a slight heat - and has a good aftertaste. It was silky and smooth, rich, and velvety. (5 of 5) Scallone: Our other order came with onion soup. My dinner partner had the privilege of tasting one of the best scallone years ago and was hoping to bring back great memories of this special dish he loved. This marriage of blending ground abalone and scallops is a savoury dish formed into patties. It is then breaded and lightly pan-fried in butter. The texture is supposed to be tender yet firm. The temperature was perfect but the patty came out almost like a regular pancake. A chunk of fresh red pepper was also thrown in, perhaps for colour, but it overpowered the dish. The pilaf rice was also a no-no. When the server came and asked how we enjoyed the dishes, I had to be blunt and said, "I didn't like the rice". Our server apologized and immediately offered to remove the rice on both plates and asked if we'd like potatoes instead. My partner opted for the baked potato. (5 of 5) The onion soup that accompanied this order was also a fail. Overall, this dinner was a 2 of 5. We were there to celebrate my birthday, so for dessert, we got Coconut Crème Brulee. Even though it wasn't cooked evenly, the light flavour of the coconut did not take over the mild flavour of the crème brulee. A lovely ending to an interesting dinner... and the crème brulee was a birthday treat, on the house. (4 of 5) Would we return? I think we would. I'd like to try other items on the menu because we feel it our privilege to have met some of the nicest staff in an eatery.

China Station Restaurant, Mariposa: 2025 Sep 12 (2.15 of 5)…read more I had a yearning for some Chinese food and decided to call for take-away from this restaurant. Since I couldn't get anyone on the phone, I decided to stop here on my way home. While I was ordering my food, a call came in. I picked up the call and it was from the restaurant owner apologizing that he'd missed my call. That's a 5 in my book. (5 of 5) My orders were Beef Chow Fun and Chicken Chow Mein. The lady who took my order was busy looking at her phone, and I had to repeat my order three times. (1 of 5) She finally acknowledged me and proceeded to take my orders to the kitchen. While I was waiting, I asked her if I could take some pictures of the establishment. She said it was fine. It didn't take long for my order to be ready. My orders came out piping hot and I was eager to dig into my food. Unfortunately, the orders were incorrect. Instead of Beef Chow Fun and Chicken Chow Mein, the meat in each box was reversed. (1 of 5) Both boxes of noodles looked pale. I may not be a Chinese food connoisseur, but my sense and smell are acute. I felt that the Chow Mein was cooked in 'old' oil. Both items were bland, but at least the onions were cooked well, leaving a crunch and not raw, plus the beef and chicken pieces were tender. I was informed that the chef is from Chengdu, China. Chengdu, a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, is the heart of Sichuan cuisine, known for its bold and spicy flavour. It is sad that I did not experience Chengdu cuisine flavour in my orders. Location & Parking: This restaurant is in a convenient shopping corner - with a couple of other restaurants, a local market and several other offices. Parking is easy and free. Atmosphere: A handsome folding screen greets you at the entrance. Once you walk past the folding screen, the place opens up to reveal large round tables, each with a lazy susan (rotating tray) in the middle. The chairs were polished wood. The tables and chairs are spaced far enough apart for privacy. The carpet looked worn. (Overall, a 2.75 of 5) Because there were only 3 patrons seated during the lunch hour (not a good sign), I walked around - checking out their display. I thought the bicycle was a cute display... then I walked to my left, and stared at the bear on the wall. The idea of displaying a bear on restaurant walls is a disgrace and is disrespectful to the creature. I don't think I could ever eat in a restaurant that shows no respect for the display. (1 of 5) It is a shame my first experience here turned me off this eatery. There really aren't any good Chinese eateries within 25 miles of the Ahwahnee-Mariposa area. The next day, I refried my Chow Fun over high heat, giving it a lovely 'wok hey'. The smoky and charred aroma added flavour that was missing. I also added some kimchi to impart more taste to the noodles.
