Grilled Chicken Curry Rice

I've tried a handful of spots at Urban Hawker, but this one might just be my favorite. I've tried their Chicken Cutlet Curry Rice and their Grilled Chicken Curry Rice. Both are so good. I can see why their curry sauce is in half their menu lol. The curry is not too spicy, and the flavors just hit. It pairs really well with the chicken, whether grilled or cutlet. They also add an immense amount of cabbage. I am a big fan of vegetables, so I always love when restaurants give generous portions of it in a dish. I'm honestly so stoked to come back and try their Hainanese Fish and Chips (saw many great reviews about).

Staffs were friendly. Located in Urban Hawker. The bathrooms have codes on the bottom of receipts. We ordered chicken curry. It was spicy. Other than that, it was delicious. Utensils are by the stand near the napkins. Food: 4/5 Service: 4/5 Ambience: 4/5

In my house I absolutely hate hyperbole. But when it comes to food I'm a big fan, especially when it can be backed up. Time to try New York city's best fish and chips. I'm sure there is a lot of it so this is a bold claim. I've never had swai before. I liked it. Mild but interesting. Not too fishy with some decent texture. Kind of like tilapia that's not gross. Panko breading which is not my most favorite but it works in this case. I ended up getting a side of curry since so many things had it. I highly recommend that move. Great for dipping fries and fish. The fries are those battered ones that turn up anything in a dive bar. A little salty but good. Best fish and chips I had in nyc. That claim can be made.

The chicken curry cutlet from Smokin' Joe's is always on point. There is so much food in this dish that I often can't finish it all in one sitting. The wait time is a little long because they have so many orders, which is understandable but can be a little frustrating. There are a lot of tables surrounding the stand so I've never had an issue finding somewhere to sit. Definitely a place to check out.

One of the many food places located in Urban Hawker. Like every other place there, it is mostly just order, and wait till it is done and grab yourself so mostly just self serve. The food was actually pretty good and fulfilling. The location is a big food hall so a nice little spot to get some lunch when you're hungry with many choice available.

Pricey but tasty. Service is friendly and quick. Ambience is chaotic in the food hall but it's as expected. Food is solid. Went with a curry fried fish. You get a large filet of basa, a flaky boneless white fish cut. Good crust, fish remains moist. It's served over rice along with a fried egg some stewed cabbage and carrots and a few cherry tomatoes, and a few scoops of curry sauce. The curry is actually tasty, even for someone that usually doesn't like coconut in anything. They could probably get by with a smaller meal for a few bucks less but as it stands I can get two meals from this one dish. Anyway, there's good food but you'll pay a premium for hype and location.

I recently came here for lunch on a Saturday. I ordered their grilled chicken curry rice. Once my food was ready, I found an empty table nearby to eat my food. Even though I was not a big fan of coconut curry, it was not bad. I could eat this every day! The food here is consistently good and the staff is very friendly. From time to time, they'll have new special items on their menu.

Updating previous review, have gone back probably at least once a week since for lunch. It's a bit pricy, but so is everything else in the Urban Hawker food hall. The food is great and very consistent.

My 4th visit to the Urban Hawker led me to this stall in which I've had my eye on the Hainanese Fish and Chips for some time so as an excuse to do a review of this place, this was the opportunity. I would go on my mini critique on how paying $20 for Fish and Chips is wild, well it does come with cole slaw but i don't care much for it so i completely ignored it...anyway like all of the other stalls I have visited here, the food definitely delivers in taste. Fries were nice and crispy, that semi crunchy texture that delights my taste buds and the fish, I'm not sure which one it is but it's a thick one and it is cooked and breaded so well, just melts in your mouth with the texture. I shouldn't complain about the prices here in the Hawker because the food hasn't missed as of yet and I wouldn't want it to because I want this food court to thrive. Another banger from the Urban Hawker, I recommend it.

I stopped by this place on my first visit to Urban Hawker and I'm so glad I found it! Urban Hawker itself is a great Singaporean food hall, and while I'd want to try some of the other spots there as well, I'll definitely be coming back to Smokin Joe at some point. Walking through the stalls, the news article at their booth stating they have some of the best fish and chips in New York City is what initially drew me in. The other dishes on the menu looked great too, but I knew that's what I'd have to try. The crust on the fish had good flavour, the fish was tender (albeit a bit thin), the fries were amazingly crispy (almost like Costco food court fries, if any Canadians happen to come across this) and the most addicting pineapple slaw. Each component was great on its own, and everything came together really well. While I don't think I'd had quite enough fish and chips here to substantiate the claim, the fish and chips here are a great pick and I'll definitely be back again.

I heard that Joe's had good fish and chips so when I was in the mood for some I headed over. It's located in urban hawker so it looks like a food stall. While eating it I thought it was fine. Nothing amazing but not terrible. But afterwards I felt extremely sick. Maybe it was a fluke since there are many high level reviews but I wouldn't recommend going here.

Set 1. Hainanese curry chicken cutlet
Lentina V.

The kid wanted chicken rice but Hainan Jones was sold out so I got him the next best thing - chicken cutlet Hainanese curry. I was advised it'd take approx 20 minutes to prepare but he ended up with his food before my hokkien mee was ready. Cutlet was crispy and tender. The curry was delicious. The braised cabbage with the curry sauce was a pleasant surprise! Reminded me of vegetarian curry at economical rice stalls. The kid really enjoyed his chicken cutlet and ate everything. Also, apparently they serve the best fish and chips in NYC (according to a food critic).

My friend's grabbed a table while I went to scope out the places I haven't tried last time I was here. Decided I wanted to try the grilled chicken with hainese curry rice (#2) . The person warned me it would take 8 minutes. It took about 10 mins but worth the wait. Since they cook the chicken and poached egg right then and there; have some patience. The rest of the items have been prepared ahead of time (rice, 2 leafy green stalks, braised cabbage, and hainese curry sauce). I normally don't like runny eggs. This was more cooked than a fully runny egg which suited me fine. Since we had timed tickets, I had to quickly eat my food. The food was pretty good. Chicken and greens was perfectly cooked. Curry sauce with the rice was delicious. I was afraid the braised cabbage was going to be watery and overcooked, nope - it was cook I'm not a big rice person unless the rice is saucy. The rice with the curry sauce is great. Go try for yourself and decide

I really enjoyed the vegan patty curry rice here: the partty had a nice crispy texture, and the dish was bursting with savory flavor.

Urban Hawker isn't a restaurant, but a food hall with lots of Singaporean and Malaysian food vendors. This means lots of different options to choose from. :) We split a Hainanese chicken rice plate and an order of chicken and lamb skewers, both of which tasted very yummy. While we also wanted to try a dessert, the dessert stall we were interested in was unmanned. We were also feeling pretty full from our main lunch items.

From my initial impression, I was honestly kind of underwhelmed. When I first entered, it seemed like a ghost town with so many of the tables empty like it had just opened minutes ago. Towards the later evening after 6:30-7pm, it started to get packed towards the back. This food hall consisted of several stalls mostly Singaporean & Indian cuisines - with some hint of Filipino, Chinese, Malaysian , etc. You order, find a table and pick up your food when it's ready. [Just note that some dishes come out in plastic containers as if you are taking it to-go even though you are dining in]. I opted for a Singaporean spot called Prawnaholic and opted for the #3 HOKKIEN MEE. Don't get me wrong, it was good. But I'm not sure that the dish was that good to equate the cost in terms of portion size or taste. Maybe if it was slightly cheaper, I could make sense of coming back, but otherwise, I think I would prefer buying other dishes elsewhere. Overall, I find that price are high (typical midtown prices for foods) for average tasting foods. I personally was okay with trying it once and would prefer other food options as opposed to this food hall.

So when the server asked us what we'd like to drink, we asked for hot water (later found out we were charged $1 for each cup of hot water). We ordered the beef rendang, chicken satay and singapore noodles (with tofu and vegetables). I had been hoping to try the soft shelled crab but perhaps it's out of season or no longer on the menu as I didn't see it. The chicken satay came out first, it was 4 sticks of skewered chicken drenched in a slightly spicy creamy peanut sauce. This was the second favorite dish of the table as the chicken was tender and the peanut sauce paired well with it. The singapore noodles were unexpected the favorite of the table. The flavor profiles weren't too crazy just a simple curry flavor but mixed with the thin noodles and other ingredients, it was savory and not too heavy to eat a lot of. The beef rendang was the last dish to come out, the beef pieces were very tender and this was the spiciest dish out of all 3 that we had ordered. It came with about a bowl's worth of white rice on the side and some cucumbers and purple cabbage salad. It was a pretty okay lunch. Not the best Malaysian food I've had (Chinatown is still the best spot for me) but it's a good spot if you're craving Malaysian food in the west village area. Bathrooms were immaculately clean which is always a plus.
