This place is underrated. The burgers are delicious (and you can get your vegetarian impossible burger cooked on a separate grill. The fries are crunchy and always cooked to order so they're always hot (almost too hot) when they're served. Neat little spot open late off of Telegraph in Berkeley. I've driven by a handful of times and have always been curious, and semi-late night after a show in Concord, I drove by and decided that now was as good a time as any. A couple things that stand out: for being a relatively small, unassuming place from the exterior, they have a decent amount of seating. There's an inside with picnic style tables and a counter, and a few more tables outside. Service is surprisingly quick for this type of joint. There's one person on the register and one person manning the grill. I've been to spots like this that have taken twice as long, if not longer. The hours are also excellent. A place like this SHOULD be open late. I'm glad it is. Along with that, the prices aren't bad at all, especially for being located in the bay. I grabbed a chili burger and Diet Coke, and all that said, the burger was just okay. Maybe I should've opted for cheese. Maybe I should have gotten fries. The chili just wasn't the consistency I would have put on a burger, to be honest. It had beans and was less on the thick side. Because of that, it was near impossible to eat without a fork. Which sorta defeats the purpose of a burger, you know? But! It was my first time, and I think everything else went pretty well. I'm absolutely not dismissing this place off of one experience and now I know I'll need to branch out next time. For the price, it's absolutely worth revisiting, and again, they really knocked it out of the park on everything else. I love Smokehouse and have been going there for over 20 years. I get the same order every time and would give it a 10 star if I could! Unfortunately, today I experienced the worst service I have ever received. This is not reflect of the cooking staff. It was just the cashier taking the orders this evening. He was rude and condescending. I ordered a grilled cheese w everything- the menu clearly states it comes w toppings. I received just bread and cheese. When I asked him about it, he said I got what I ordered. When I pointed out what the sign clearly said, he replied by letting me know he doesn't make the signs. What an ass. The food is good and I've been going here for over two decades. It's nice they're open again and good to see the same lady working behind the grill. Unfortunately I was there last Sunday and the young guy taking orders out front over charged me and was has having a very loud conversation with his friend who was standing right next to the register. I normally don't care about people and what they're doing but this guy was yelling "nigga" this and "nigga" that every few seconds with his friend. I am offended to hear anyone throwing these words around especially by a person who is not black. If the management sees this teach your guy how to be professional and how to take an order. I ordered a impossible burger with regular cheese. The kid with the puffy coat and skinny pants wrote me up for a impossible cheeseburger with regular cheese added. This means I pay for the vegan cheese and the regular and only receive 1. It's not a lot of money ultimately not a big deal but it's not what I asked for and it's all due to the skinny pants incompetence. I want to love this place again. Came here on a friend's recommendation. He know I love a great flame-grilled burger and will travel out of the way for a good place. Cool thing about The Smokehouse is you pay after you pickup your order. Nice touch in this day and age where you usually pre-pay than get your food. Reminder this place is CASH ONLY. Please bring some.so you don't loose face with you girl or friends. Unless you are cheap that is. Then bring your card and claim ignorance. But you might walk away hungry if you try to game you friends. Another cool thing? The Smokehouse has nice outdoor seating as well as indoor tables. But trust me, if the weather is nice you will want to sit outside. This trip I ordered the following. Double Cheeseburger with everything including grilled onions. Crispy cooked french fries. Chocolate Shake. Total for everything was $12.52. The burger itself was a little lacking in the meat department. Next time it will be a triple. The meat itself was a little overcooked. But despite the problems the whole thing put together was quite tasty. The grilled onion put it over the top. You really need the grilled onions. I normally skip onions altogether but I am glad I opted for the everything burger tonight. So good I was licking the paper wrapper after the burger was gone! The fries were ordered crispy on purpose. This was to compliment my expectations of a thick shake. The shake was delivered just as think as I expected it to be, The crispy fries quick made their way into the cup to scoop out the shake in bite-sized bits of delicious heaven. Other tips for the fries. Be sure to use both salt and pepper to season the fries before dipping. In the end you will wind up with a salted chocolate flavor that has just a bit of heat from the black pepper. This ends up being a sweet and sour and slightly spicy tasty treat. After the fries are gone your shake still had that same tasty flavor all the way to the last slurp through the straw, Service was quick. The tables were kept clean. The trash was kept emptied. Transition from evening to night was nice with a well-lighted place. A goodd thing sin The Smokehouse is open late night. Overall i count The Smokehouse as a win I would visit again. Smokehouse used to be one of the best spots around but ever since they've opened back up, service has gone way down. While the food still tastes great, and the menu has a pretty wide variety with vegan and dairy free options, I've had several instances now where I've placed an order for pickup only to arrive with them saying I never ordered anything at all. Another time they told me they gave my order away because I took too long to arrive (about 20 minutes) and blamed me that they had to remake it. I've kind of given up on them at this point. This is surprisingly a good place with really decent prices. It may look old but that is part of its charm. Street parking. I got the veggie burger which was really good. I don't know how many times I am going to say "surprisingly" but I really was surprised. I love french fries and could eat a lot of it; but the portion of their fries was surprisingly big that I couldn't finish it. There are tables inside (next to a heater) and a few benches outside. We got there right before lunchtime rush (btw there was a line after we placed our order) You pay after your order is ready. I personally like this system better than paying before the food is out. Old fashion, American burger joint very busy at times food is prepared pretty fast and you can watch it being prepared. You can order ahead online or by phone. I believe to speed up the process a little bit and it'll be ready when you get there parking can be a little tight out front sometimes and remember do not leave any valuables in your car. I went there recently after not having been there in maybe 30 years. I had a chocolate shake which was great, and a double cheeseburger which was one of the worst burgers I've ever had, two small very thin patties cooked to death and dry as a bone, with no detectable flavor from the meat. The place is very popular, and if the burgers were always like mine, that wouldn't be the case. The issue has to be quality control in this very busy place.
