I feel sorry for Smith's Sewer Service. Thirty-one years ago I purchased this house and have lived here since then as a single-by-choice woman. During that time I've asked Smith's Sewer Service to help a handful of times with a project, and they always did a very nice job. That was not the case, however, a few months ago. In August, 2024, I needed them again at which time they sent a tech who also needed a plumber to complete part of the project. That plumber worked at Priority Plumbing, and he completed the requested plumbing work very quickly. Everything went well. One of them asked me in the presence of the other individual to pay the entire bill due to Priority Plumbing, which I did in ​three or four days' time. Then this year I scheduled another project with Smith's by email, but I soon received a follow up email saying they would no longer provide service to this property, because my account had been "deactivated". I had no idea what that meant. So when I called to ask why my account had been deactivated, their office manager​, "Heather", said, and I quote, "I don't know, but we must have had a good reason." OK. So in my effort to seek further clarification, I spoke by phone with "Bill in the shop". When I asked him the same question, he said, and I quote, "I don't know, but we must have had a good reason." Feeling under obvious and understandable attack, I emailed them numerous unsolicited documents that provided evidence of my good standing with my bank, which I've been with for over 50 years; my FICO score which literally cannot get much higher than it is, etc, etc, etc, etc. Then I must have asked the "magic question". When I asked Smith's if they received the payment they were owed for their share of the work from the 08/2024 project, their tone changed entirely to one that was irritable and defensive. Begrudgingly, "Bill in the shop" refused to answer that question but agreed to provide service at this address once again. However, by that time, given everything they chose to put me through for so many days after so many emails and ​so many phone calls, I told them I would take my business elsewhere, and I wished them all well. I still do not know why my account was deactivated. It must be that some things in this life are just not meant to be understood. read more

We had a drain clog Friday, Feb 21 and nobody else could get to us the same day. Smith's called when they had a cancellation and Tommy showed up and stayed until it was fixed. He was thorough, professional and it didn't cost a fortune. We were very happy and would call them again. read more

Some people in my local FB group recommended Smith for what we thought was a serious issue. Brian and his handsome assistant came out, as scheduled (I forgot to ask him for his name. Sorry!) Within a couple of minutes they informed me that the kitchen sink issue was due to a brain dead relative (my words) hooking new pipes up correctly. He did use a snake in the toilet. Whatever it was cleared before he barely did anything. He gave me suggestions on how to fix the issues. They were both so sweet & polite! When we go to remodel the bathroom next year, we will be calling them to have Brian & the other guy help with moving the sewer line. read more

Steve came back to my house to finish the unplugging of my sewer pipe that leads to the street. He brought another Tech with him named Rob. Both men were polite and knowledgeable. Steve brought out the hydro jet and put a camera into the pipe to make sure there where no branches or other blockages and removed all of the scale that had built up into the pipe. He even cleaned out my gutter while he was on my roof. Steve and Rob really saved me a ton of worry and money. Both men are absolute superstars!!!!!! read more

I've used smiths a few times, they're reasonable in cost and super efficient. Been pleased! First time out waste was left very messy, but after a call they fixed the issue and offered me a discount. Will def use again! read more

Smith's Sewer Service is an quality company to work with. We live out west in that Waukee/Urbandale/Clive area. We have a problem drain line that has plagued us for almost 20 years. We have had multiple companies come out and snake out the line over the years so this is a regular thing for us. T.J. from Smith's was fantastic! He was professional, courteous, knowledgeable and explained well what was going on with our strange sewer line configuration. He was also conscientious about keeping the space clean, even bringing his own towels for any clean-up that may be needed (that was a first for me!). When I needed extra follow-up Smith's responded quickly getting me the info I needed same day by coming out, above and beyond service! He also labeled everything for my plumber. We had a drain backing up in our basement sink. Called late one afternoon and they were here at 9:00am the next morning. Anthony was our service man and he was awesome!!! He had great communication and people skills and was very effective and efficient at diagnosing what and where the problem causing the back up was located. He had the blockage eliminated in no time and made sure he left a clean area where he had been working. The cost was very reasonable. I've used smiths for years. The work has always been good however from 3 years ago to today they have tripled their rates. To come out and unclog a basement sewer drain cost a total of over $1800. It took 1/2 hour. $3200 an hour they should be in jail for theft. read more

Drain backed up on a Friday morning. Called then up fully expecting them to tell me I'd have to wait over the weekend. Receptionist Marnie pleasantly answered the phone and said they'd be over in 2 to 4 hours. Derek called me before showing up early. Great guy, respectful, clean, honest. Unclogged the floor drain within twenty minutes. 30 day warranty. Have me his cell if I had anymore issues. A fair $100 bill. Will def be calling them back if we need their services again. Their middle name says it all. I got hung up on while trying to book the service. Phone manners were abysmal and unprofessional. Never received a confirmation via text, email or phone call. I was given a time span of three hours that they might show up and I was called at two hours and 45 minutes into that window and told by the technician that he was possibly only 20 minutes away. It turns out, he had no idea what type of service I had requested even though I went into it in detail during the initial request for service. They might do a quality job, but I wouldn't know because the customer service experience was so terrible that I canceled before they made it out. read more

Called for service 2 weeks ago to arrange an appointment. No one showed up or called after 2 hours into time frame. I called and they could not provide an approximate time (after checking their list 3 x) and told I might need a real plumber anyways if they couldn't handle the job. Decided to cancel, find a REAL plumber. Didn't feel like spending $$$ only to find out I needed someone else to do the job. I wish they were honest when I first called. read more

Fucking Awesome folks!!! After having greenwood sewer out who fixed nothing!!!! Smiths came out and zapped my sewer line.... but let me tell you Tommy the tech they sent out was very very knowledgeable well trained, funny, cool and totally into his job!!!!!! All I have to say is they rock and Tommy deserves a raise he was the coolest guy ever during such a shitty time literally!!! I have had good luck with Smith's Sewer in the past but today's service left a lot to be desired. The worker left of a trail of gunk across the basement. I asked to clear out the basement toilet pipe that was clogged, the main pipe in the basement that comes from the kitchen and also the sewage to the street. He told me that he didn't charge me for clearing one of the sewer pipes because something along the lines of "he's a nice guy" but when I examined it after he left the pipe wasn't even touched. Also he left a trail of gunk from one end of the basement across my basement rugs and floor to the other end. I've had great service in the past with Smith's but I probably won't use them again. Friday nights spent mopping a basement slab and scrubbing area rugs from a trail of black ooze are the best Friday nights, am I right? read more

Called the today to handle a foundation drainage inspection for my home sale. At 10am this morning. Received a call from Brian that he had inspected the drainage tile and the sump pump well. All was well but he found a switch on the pump bad. Asked to approve that work (very reasonable). At 5:45 he texts me that the work is done and all is working as required. Once the technician showed up he worked quick and got the job done and clogged removed. But, I scheduled an appointment about a week out for a window from 12-4. That timeframe came and went, at 4:30 I called and was told I was next on the list. At 5:45, I called again and was still next on the list. A tech called at 6:15 and said he was in his way and would be there in 10 minutes. He showed up 45 minutes later after calling again to get directions. I understand you have to schedule a service window because some appointments take longer than others, but this was ridiculous. read more

I had a incident where I put turkey down garbage disposal called Smith service they sent out a tech his name was Harris he was beyond polite amazing unclogged my line and helped me clean up the mess...told me how to get the stains off my stainless steel sink he went the extra mile...awsome service,had same day as I called they came would highly reccomend. read more

We had a clogged sewer line and Smiths responded quickly and was at our door in less than 2 hours. The tech did a great job explaining the issue and giving suggestions on why it happened. Cleaned up and was done in less than a hour. Highly recommend them for any issues you have. read more

They were more expensive than rotor router, and they did not contact me until after my inspection period was done. After I called four times, the shop manager finally called me back. He was completely unapologetic about the lack of communication and customer service. Would not recommend this company to anyone for any reason. read more

Watched one of their vehicles driving way over the speed limit weaving in between cars almost causing an accident. Don't think any sewer service is worth someone's life. If they are not on time, probably got pulled over by state patrol. I would go with someone else more trustworthy and safe. (July 7th heading Southbound on I-35 into Des Moines.) read more

You'd expect a local metro service with professional drivers would know the 35/80 mixmasters. Instead I had the unfortunate experience of being behind one of their vehicles in the left lane for I-35N who slammed on his brakes and forced his way into the I-80E traffic while flipping the bird to honking traffic around him. I first tried calling the telephone number for the business (after getting safely down the road to an area of little traffic) but nobody answered. Maybe they'll see this on yelp. read more

Over the last 4 years or so I have had numerous problems with my sewer service. I live in a 55 year old ranch in that until recently had a 55 year old sewer line. I remember the first time I had to call a plumber out because waste water was backing up into my basement from the floor drain. It was a Smith's plumber that first suspected that my house might have Orangeburg (wood pulp and tar) pipe. When I first called on them, their plumber was very polite, made sure to protect the carpeting on my stairs and didn't get annoyed with the questions I was asking. That was 4 years ago. I didn't need another plumber for about a year after that and called Roto Rooter instead. I will keep my opinion to myself but let's just say the quality of service wasn't the same and it cost more. About 6-months later I needed the line cleared again, then 6-months after that and then the calls were getting more and more frequent even requiring at one point more than one visit a month (which, by the way, they did not charge me for, thank you!!) I had gotten about 6 months off of the last cleaning when, in June, the telltale signs of a clogged line showed up again. This time though, your plumber had bad news for me. He couldn't clear past a certain point and his knife came back with clay on it. So, I called up a contractor and got the process of replacing the line going. I am amazed that it lasted as long as it did and their plumbers played a big part in that. They showed professionalism, courtesy and were always being there to save the day (mostly on a Sunday). Just today I recommended Smith's to a friend and if I were to ever need the services they offer again, I know who I would call. read more

Everyone I dealt with in this company was amazing. The schedulers were understanding and helped get someone to my house the same day. And they did! I got someone to come out soon after I called to open the block in my sewer line when two other plumbers couldn't do it. And they got a specialty tech out a couple hours later to camera my line and mark it outside for me. Both techs were fast, efficient, friendly and extremely patient with explaining things to me and making sure I had all the info I needed for the next step of work. The second tech took the time to explain his marks and how he wrote everything on the invoice for me so the next company I hired to replace my sewer line would have a reference. It made a really bad situation a lot less stressful. read more

Absolute terrible service. The workers were very disrespectful at my place of employment. Wouldn't tell me anything that was going on, when trying to figure out what was going happening they just rolled their eyes and gave me attitude. They were here to look at our grease trap, they dug in and around our grease trap with my company's broom. The broom had to be thrown away because it was covered in gunk. Very rude to just damage our property like that. I handed the workers a number for our director and ask them to give him a call about an update, he just threw the number on the floor towards the other worker and rolled his eyes again. They ended up at the end just leaving our store and not saying a word , we weren't sure if they were coming back, what the problem was, or anything. Would NOT recommend. read more

I called Monday night with a plumbing emergency. The guy that answered said he would call me back in 20 minutes. Its Wednesday and I still haven't heard from him. Tried calling two more times with no answer. When the sewer backs up into the basement you want someone who is going to fix it as fast as possible. Had horrible roots blocking our drain. They came out cut the roots out and cleaned out our other drain as well. Very nice to work with. He was done in less than an hour. Also less than half the price of Golden Rule who couldn't fix the problem properly. Will definitely use Smiths in the future. read more

Terrible service. The first time I called them they were lazy and did not do the job right. In fact I had to call a different company to fix the problem. The second time my sister called them they said they were going to come at 9, did not arrive until 2. Save your money and go some where else. read more
