I had a new HVAC system installed by Thrasher years ago. I had multiple problems which they always said was my fault. Finally called another company, they fixed it and I haven't had one problem since. Their customer service is horrible. Rude, dismissive and confrontational. The absolute kindest, most empathetic woman was working dispatch when I called with a plumbing emergency on Friday afternoon after a rough week. I was at my wits end by the time I connected with her. She was incredibly compassionate and found a plumber who could squeeze me in between other calls. I had 2 new boilers installed in a duplex 15 years ago with a new meter added so each unit would pay there own gas bill. 6 years later a unit was empty and the hot water heater was on the wrong meter. They came out and said sorry and said it was fixed. I just had it empty again and now the gas to the stove was on the wrong meter. They admitted it was there fault and bill was taken care of. Today I get a call trying to bill me over $550 for their error after they said bill was taken care of. Please do yourself a favor and call someone else. They used to be reasonable priced. Now very high and don't stand behind there work or word. read more

In November had them come to my daughters home in Altoona. When the tech arrived I told him pretty much what I had done previous as far as checking why water heater may be tripping off. He went over the heater an pretty much checked the same thing I did and told me he found nothing wrong. He said if the heater trip again it would probably be gas valve. One week later tripped again and ordered new gas valve and replaced. 2 weeks later same issue. So I made a phone call to Thrasher asking if they would have the tech call me. But was told no they could not do that, but they could send another tech out. I told them thank you for the help, and realized it is not about helping the customer its about them making money. I had 2 outside water spickets that were dripping and Ben came and worked above and beyond and tried different things to stop the leak and dripping on both faucets. He wouldn't leave until it was completely fixed. He even tried fixing the old faucets before trying to sell me all new insides. He put new faucets on both and they no longer drip and leak. He was very polite and honest and explained everything he was doing. I have used Thrasher Service for many years and they have always done the job right and they don't try to sell you something that isn't necessary. Very honest and professional people. My father used Thrasher's for a bathroom remodel, it was a tub that was converted into a shower. He's elderly and this was a necessity for him. I live out of state and just recently visited him, saw this "remodel" for the first time. First of all, the price for this was absolutely ridiculous. It reminded me of a plastic type shower that you would see in a older model RV. The closure is this horrible, cheesy, plastic, accordion style door. He was charged almost $8500 for this project. Not sure if they thought it was okay to take advantage of someone older, or If this is what they consider a bathroom remodel. Nothing else was replaced or upgraded. I'm pretty sure central Iowa has many other options besides this company. My advice is find someone else. read more

Dispatcher quoted their trip charge & hourly rate when I called to schedule a plumber. Today the dispatcher called to let me know he was on the way. He arrived close to his scheduled time. I had 3 jobs: a shower valve, reinstalling a leaking toilet & installing a whole house water filter. He quickly completed all 3 jobs professionally and neatly. I didn't receive the service but my Mother Inlaws neighbor a elderly old lady on a fixed income did.Her sump pump went out in her basement so she called Thrasher and they charged her over $150 for a yearly maintenance fee then over $650 for a pump.The exact same pump was purchased for $149.This matter has not been resolved yet but her Son Inlaw put the $149 one in,and told Thrashers to come pick the other up and credit the woman.If they do I will update their review. read more

Took a day off only to have Thrasher call at end of service window requesting rescheduling.

Just bought a house in Des Moines with a "finished" basement. Once all settled realize our finished basement doesn't have any heating vents. Eeek! Looked at different options online and decided to contact Thrashers as they did bathrooms and heating thought it would be a good fit since later on down the line I want to install a bathroom also in my basement. Chris came out and was a super nice guy. Said he could have his guys put in four vents with a return for $500. Sounded super. Reviewed with my husband we thought the price was right. Contacted Chris again because we were installing the vents into a drop ceiling; wanted to get price check on just dry walling ceiling and get heating installed. He sent out a guy from the dry wall place they work with right away. Got second quote was around $1,000. Sounded great sent them check with 50% down. First time installer from Thrasher's came out he was alone without anyone from drywall company took him down explained work to him (as I didn't see how he could do it without the drywallers there) He then calls dry wall company to set up a time when they could call come at once. First time Thrashers was there no service done. Within a few days they all come out together gentleman from Thrashers was here just a few hours cut out vents showed me and said once the dry wall was complete to contact them again so he could put covers on my vents as he could not do that until work was done. Second time they were out. This was around Thanksgiving. After the dry wall was complete I contacted Thrasher's to come and put on the register covers. They sent they guy out right away but, he didn't seem to really know the work that needed done. No problem I walk him down show him where the previous gentleman left three register covers that just needed to be installed. Also asked him if he could contact the drywall company for me to pick up their scrap that had been sitting in my back yard for over a week. He said no problem. Before he leaves he shows me what he as done. Which is installed two register covers where the new drywall had just been installed. The third register was installed in a room that already had a finished ceiling and he said the cover that was left won't fit that register. He instructed me he contacted the dry wall company and they would be out in within a few days to pick up scrap and they were going to bring the correct register cover. But, if no one shows to go ahead and call them back. Third time Thrashers was out here. I wait about a week because I am generous and patient person and call Thrashers back to tell them the scrap is still in my yard I am missing a register cover Oh and one of the covers they put in just fell out of my ceiling because they didn't use any type of anchors or anything. A few minutes later Chris calls me back because I guess they don't understand what's going on. I explain to him the situation. He says well I talked to the original installer and he said he left three covers there. I agree he left three covers here and tell Chris the second gentleman he sent out said the cover didn't fit and even if it would fit he took it with him and I don't have it anymore. Chris says okay he will send someone out. In between all this I had an out of town vacation going on so it was a few weeks before I called Thrashers back to tell them no one had yet to come to install my missing register cover and to fix the one that just fell out. They apologize they hadn't sent anyone because they didn't realize my job was not complete. At this point Thrasher's is paid in full; I paid them out of good faith that they surely could send someone out to put up a few register covers. We are in January now been dealing with the same project since right before Thanksgiving. Open the door yesterday to see my original installer from Thrashers! Yes relief surely this gentleman can fix it he actually KNOWS what's going on. He is down there for a little while reports to me to come see his work. Register covers are installed he yanks on them in front of me yes nice and sturdy they won't be falling out. The cover that was missing though well the second person from Thrashers couldn't get it to stay because well the whole was cut to big. So now I have a cover on it but between where the cover and where the drywall starts I can stick my hand. They tell me I will just have to call someone to patch my drywall. Surely I don't think this is right but I figure I will just call Chris and get this all worked out. Contact Christ and tell him how on the ceiling that was already finished the cover doesn't fit right that I can fit my whole hand in the gap between the register cover and the drywall. That now my drywall needs patched. SURE he can take care of that for an extra charge. WHAT A JOKE! Extra charge for what you guys messed up my drywall now I am footing the bill for you to fix it. I will never do service with them again. read more

We had the furnace checked and our man said it was fine and dry inside but I needed to find someone to replace the water heater. I had seen on TV their ad many times and gave them a call and they replaced the heater under not so sweet smelling conditions with a good brand for a thousand installed and the other taken away. Our bathroom faucet began to drip and I ignored it the best I could, but eventually called Thrasher again. They sent out a man who was less than thrilled to be here. He said that he couldn't get access to the valves because it was in stalled with the vanity when we remodeled the bathroom. He said the would have to remove the vanity. I said that wasn't going to happen because he would crack the tiles and the floor tile. He said yes it would happen. Then he said I needed to replace with a wide set and his store sold them. So we went over there and picked out something. He came back out and said he couldn't install them because the holes were too small. I asked couldn't he file the holes until they were wide enough. He grumbled and said he was going to look for new valves. So in the meantime, I found out where I purchased the remodeling and they had the records from 10 years earlier. They put me in touch with the company that made the faucet who in turn sold me two valves, one hot and one cold. So this guy comes out said he got the last two valves in town and there were not any more and in 3 minutes replaced them. Drip stopped, but then said the faucet would drip a bit because of the water in it and the crud from the valve that collected over time. I mentioned that I had 2 valves coming in the mail and told to save them. He charged us $370.00 . OK. That was on 7/30/19. Two days ago it started to drip again. I called Thrasher back, mentioned I had two valves. They said they would ask the repair man if he remembered the job. I got a call back and was told that since the valves had been replaced once it was something wrong with the whole faucets and both needed to be replaced. They then said that the parts alone for the two valves was over $100.00 I said that wasn't right because for the two valves i bought from the company who made the faucet was $12.98 for the both of them. I said that I didn't like the idea because we were going to replace the faucet , told he couldn't enlarge the holes but was willing to destroy the whole vanity and tiles because he couldn't fit in the wide enough doors and all that. I wished them well but said, that i will put up with the drip and very probably will go with a different company who honors their year warranty on parts they put in , although I would have given them the parts I ordered. and didn't want them to do the job. Now i have read some great reviews about Thrasher and they were very kind to come out after the flood to install that water heater, remove the old and install shut off valves and I do appreciate it. I am still baffled that since the valves to shut off the water are easily accessible, and a small set screw to remove the handles, put in the new valves as done before, they were not willing to put them in, even charge me, I am baffled. I guess there are enough plumbers in town to choose from, i thought a family business would be better . Maybe they will read this review and improve their service. read more

I recently had a plumbing and a heating problem. Called thrashers, found their rates to be reasonable ans set up an appointment. Service man came out and promptly fixed a leak under kitchen sink and replaced a part on our furnace. He was done in less than an hour and our bill was fair. I will definitely use them again if i have more problems, hopefully i dont. read more

Thrasher was suppose to fix my hot water, they replaced a part, cost $400 and it was defective. I called them, spoke with Tony and she acknowledged that the part wasn't performing like it should. She told me to watch it and if it got worse to call them. It got worse, I called and now they refuse to fix it. She gave excuse after excuse and hung up on me. We have used this company for more than 15 yrs for heating/AC installation and service. They have been prompt and knowledgeable. (Including talking me through the process of getting a frightened cat out of the cold air return system in the evening) This was the first time we used them for plumbing. The guy was here in less than 2 hours and replaced the corroded pipe that caused a major H20 leak in our basement in less than 1 hour. So we were w/o H20 for under 4 hrs.
