I have been a customer of Smiths since 2011 and have had them work on all four of my vehicles at various times. The work that Smiths has done for me ranges from oil changes, tire repair, and other regular maintenance to more major repairs like motor mounts, strut replacements, and A/C systems. I have found Smiths staff to be very courteous, professional, and honest and the quality of the work performed has been excellent. They also honored their warranty when a replacement part proved to be defective, replacing the part with a new one and changing nothing for the labor to swap out the bad part. Took my car in for an alignment, $130 for them to put sensors on my vehicle, drive it around for 5 minutes and for them to tell me they couldn't fix the camber on my wheels due to a "third party auto part." Don't get rinsed by these guys. read more

I would not recommend Smith's Service Center. They don't respond to requests for quotes, appointments or information online so why do they even have that option on their website menu? It's difficult to get them to call you back, but finally I got my car in there for service. They told me it needed a part that was very difficult to find and that they would let me know the status. Well, they never called me at all, ever, and my car sat there for several MONTHS while I waited to hear back from them. I called to talk to them every few weeks, and if someone answered, they would tell me the same thing. Scott would always say "I'll call you next week" but he never did. Finally I did receive a call from them because as they told me, someone had broken into some of the cars in their lot, including mine. They said they were sorry about that, but nothing of value had been stolen (which was wrong, and they had NO WAY of knowing that.) I knew my car had been there awhile but only because they told me they were still looking for the part. Then they called repeatedly to tell me to come clean my stuff out so they could get it off their lot, but they'd help me get it sold to a scrap dealer for $250 and give a discount on the work done because of the break-in (though an initial inspection was the only "work" they ever performed on my car.) I cleaned out my car but didn't get anything resolved that day since apparently I was only "allowed" to speak with Scott about this. You remember, the guy who always says he'll call, but never does. I tried to reach them for several weeks. Finally I was able to get Scott on the phone and he said that he sold the car for scrap for $200 and that my inspection cost $80 so he had $120 there for me. I figured I'd ask any questions when I got there but at that time, of course, Scott wasn't around. The staff on duty found the envelope Scott said he'd leave for me and pulled out $120 in cash and handed it to me. No paperwork, no receipt, nothing, even though I asked. This all seems pretty unprofessional and suspicious to me, but I don't feel like bothering to interact with them again for whatever other amount might be owed me (I would think maybe that inspection fee should've been halved, at least.) I also grew up working on cars with my dad, a Chrysler engineer for 30 years and like Ivory R., though I made it clear that I know what I'm talking about when it comes to cars, I felt that I was treated differently as a female. At the very least, they need to STOP telling people they will call them back tomorrow or next week or anytime they say they will if they're not ever going to call them back at all. The following is my female experience when taking my vehicle to Smith Service Center. Generally, the vehicle is serviced by the Toyota dealer; however, Smith's came highly recommended as an alternative dealer solution. I took my garage stored 2012 Scion IQ (Toyota) with 70k miles for routine oil, filter, belts replacement, and brake inspection. Wednesday I arrive with the oil, filter, belts. At check in I am informed that they will need to make an exception to the shop supplied parts policy as they need to mark them up 30% to stay in business. At check in I advise my brakes were "soft" and to visually check them for wear. The service writer advised a 30-minute brake inspection for $67.00 where they disassemble the calipers to check the calipers and verify lubrication. I had to declined the service fee for a brake check. I left the service counter with a quote expecting the oil change and belt change would cost about $170. Later that day I was texted an inspection report listing 14 items identified in red as URGENT. 5 items were related to the oil and belt change. (Expected) 1 item were for complete replacement of front disc (Expected; $67.00 brake inspection fee waived if you purchase. Smiths determined the brakes needed replacement without the $67.00 inspection fee.) 1 item rear drum brake and brake cylinder replacement. (Upon our inspection on their lift we were advised by the service writer that now they know the "car is garaged kept and you work from home that the rear brakes more than likely have 12-24 months of wear still available") 1 Item identified in red a wiper blade replacement (I fixed myself $0) 1 item for normal wear and tear paint chips. 1 Item 2 inch non-obstructing windshield crack (insurance repair free) 1 item for engine air filter (i fixed in 10 minutes and $8.00) 1 item for repositioning battery post (new battery no repair needed.) 1 item for coolant flush - (coolant was within factory specification). 1 license plate bulb replacement (i fixed in 10 min $2) 1 item for missing registration sticker - (I renewed) 1 item for tire damage and tire rotation. (tires less than 1 year old & damage to inside sidewall did not impact the tire functionality and visible only upon tire removal. I was surprised to see a gouge in a tire, at an non road facing location for a car that is now driven rarely. Suggested replacing strut/shocks as a yellow point due to age and 70k miles even though they were functional. I authorized repairs at $170 and was informed that the belt tensioner no longer was working and had failed during their attempt to remove it now needing replacement at $345. They did not stock the part and would not be able to get one until the next day. I had them order the part, but delay installing until we could inspect the broken part to understand why the part was suddenly no longer functioning. Friday, we visited Smiths for a walk through of what was happening with our car. They pointed us to the tensioner on the car with the presumed broken spring. The tires were off the car so they raised the car so we could walk under it and showed us the rear brakes. After a brief discussion they agreed there was likely 1 to 2 years left on the drums so they would not need to be replaced. They were still offering to do the front brakes pad/rotors for $400. We declined. They rotated the tires for free moving the damaged tire to the rear for safety. My husband inspected the entire suspension, radiator, brakes, transmission seals, oil pan, valve covers, and brake lines, motor mounts, CV boots for wear and found nothing. Once the service writer realized my husband was a knowledgeable auto enthusiast, he advised that "about only 5% of people are as knowledgeable as you and most just tell us to fix everything". In closing our experience at Smith's leads, us to believe that their repair practices although may be legal and are definitely predatory for uneducated car repair consumers. Smith's suggested unnecessary costly services such as fuel system flushes, oil changes at 2x Toyota's recommended interval, power steering flushes, coolant system flushes, unnecessary replacement of rear brakes, replacement of front struts/shocks which showed no visible signs of failure and are functioning within factory specs. Our front brake job was quoted @ $400.00 parts are about $80 pads/rotors leaving $300.00 for an hour's labor and finally $70.00 was recommended to rotate tires although they had all 4 tires off the car to do a complimentary visual brake inspection and threw in a complimentary tire rotation. We went to Smiths with a minor repair and was being pitch for many unnecessary repairs and were being led to believe that a low mileage heated garage kept Toyota was falling apart. Toyota anticipates about $400.00 service per year for the vehicle. Smith's was using fear tactics and recommending $1000.00+ of dollars in unnecessary small and large repairs. Scott and Smith's Service Center provided amazing service. Scott sent me an estimate prior to me dropping off my car, and followed up with a second estimate with options before starting any work. They came in under estimate and on time, provided me a loaner car free of charge while the work was done, and gave me some cookies when I picked up my car. Stay away from this business. These guys are happy to take your money, but when you ask them to stand behind their work when things go wrong they are very unprofessional.
