Not so good FOR you, but who cares? McDonald's (everywhere) tried salads, wraps and parfaits. Were those number one in sales? That's about it. Snack or lunch, that's what I get. But, it's the Service at this particular McDonalds. First off, no televisions blaring bad news from CNN. I hate that. Second, it's very clean. Third, Management. I have never, EVER, had a manager at ANY McDonald's tell me that they will "check on me later". Sure enough, this manager came over and asked me how I was doing and if I was enjoying my food. I said, "yes, however, note to your fryers - time to change the oil." This manager said she would let the morning shift know of this request. Fries were too brown for my liking (I go a lot so I know when it is time). Thank you for passing my suggestion on. If you are hungry, this McDonald's will not disappoint. Most visitors here use the drive-through because it is right off of 40 East to 42 West. How they ever got a 96.1 on their sanitation score. The parking lot looked abandoned. First impression as we walked in, it was dingy, dirty, and worn. The guy behind the counter also looked unclean as well as the clothes he was wearing. We sat in a booth. After looking at the dirty menus I went to use the men's room to wash my hands from them. The urinal had a covering over it and was not usable. In general the bathroom was filthy. I washed my hands and returned back to the booth. My friend ordered a shrimp plate, and I ordered a hamburger, onion rings, and a root beer which in my opinion was not a root beer at all but a Dr. Pepper he was trying to pass off as a root beer. We both also ordered water. It came in Styrofoam cups. Ketchup came out runny, very runny, like it had been watered down and I could see through it like it was water. I shook the plastic squeeze bottle and tried again, and it still came out runny. I didn't use it. My friend got a plastic fork with his meal, I got nothing. No fun music from the 50's or 60's and no pretty waitresses. It was a depressing environment. Total bill, $30.81 plus I left a $4.00 tip. Definitely will never go back there again and will warn others to avoid it.

Bottom line: we need a Smithfield's Chicken 'N Bar-b-q in Raleigh proper. Why is this level of goodness tucked away in the outskirts? Seriously--remember in Friday After Next when they said the food was so good it'll make you slap your mama? Yeah... this is that spot. The chicken tenders actually have that real-deal Southern flavor--crispy, juicy, and seasoned right. Then you've got the Carolina BBQ sauce, the hush puppies (don't skip these), and just overall comfort food done the way it should be. On top of that, the customer service is exactly what you want--friendly, welcoming, and genuinely Southern. This small local chain is a hidden gem, and honestly, it's worth the drive every time. Just do yourself a favor and go. read more

We had lunch at this White Swan to start an early kickoff to the weekend. The restaurant was mostly full when we arrived, which we hoped meant the food was much better than the dingy interior. I tried a BBQ sandwich with slaw and an order of yams. My sandwich had a generous serving of eastern NC BBQ with slaw. The BBQ was OK, but nothing special and I would not be surprised to learn the slaw was purchased somewhere else. My yams, however, were served warm and very good. I also received a few hushpuppies which would have been excellent if they had been served hot, but they were cold. My dining companion tried the "steak sandwich" and fried squash. The "steak" turned out to be a fried chuckwagon patty which would have been better if served right out of the fryer but was OK. She thought the squash, clearly fresh and just cooked, was very good. You stand in line to place your order and as expected these days, they suggest all sorts of generous tips for themselves. All the employees were friendly and clearly aiming to please. If you eat in they bring your food to the table and if you get it to go, they call your order out when its ready. You're expected to clean your table when you leave and they are kind enough to leave a bucket with rags soaked in sanitizer to clean make sure the table is ready for the next customer, even though they already hit you up for a tip when you ordered. This is a low 3-star BBQ restaurant. It's not bad, but there's better to be had not too far away.

The string beans and cabbage were as routine as possible. Seemingly no different than what you'd find at Cracker Barrel or a Bob Evans. But the hush puppies were some of the best I've ever had. However, when one of their excellent sauces is added, they're really quite tasty. Sauce options include Original, Sweet City, Brush Fire (Actually not all that hot), Swine Wine (like Eastern NC Vinegar) and Low Calorie (why bother?). I found the portions to be ample, the selections varied and the food generally very good. On my first visit I tried the basic Pulled Pork , Baked Beans and Cole Slaw I added a little of each Sauce to some of the BBQ and enjoyed them all. The Beans were tangy and tasty. The Cole Slaw was outstanding - slightly sweet, creamy and delicious. I also sampled the Pulled Chicken with Fried Okra and Sweet Corn Pudding. The chicken was pretty bland, but very good with some of the sauces. The real stars were the sides. The Fried Okra was as good as any I have ever had (with or without the Chipotle Ranch Dressing). It was lightly breaded; slightly crispy but tender. The Corn Pudding was loaded with sugary corn kernels, butter and sour cream. My two favorites are the St Louis Ribs and the Beef Brisket. The Ribs were slightly crusty but tender. I find that three Ribs and a couple of sides are plenty for a filling meal. You can get the Brisket either lean cut or full cut (I prefer the full cut).
