Wow I can't believe we are eating at the same place. I couldn't handle the flavor of the pulled pork at all. Maybe it is because I am from the Midwest but the meat taste stale. The shrimp were tiny. This was my first visit and I totally enjoyed it. I had fried chicken which was moist, juicy and finger licking good! I love that they have lemon juice packets for the tea. The staff is warm and welcoming and attentive even after your food is delivered to your table. Stopped there as I had a friend who asked me to bring her some Carolina BBQ. I'm glad I chose Smithfield's to get it. I haven't delivered it to her yet, but know that she'll love it!! It is right off the highway, so easy to get to, enjoy, and be on your way again. read more

The shrimp were so small it was like they belong in Chinese fried rice hahahaha. And they were beyond salty!!!! Totally inedible!!! I ate 5 mini shrimp out of 40. If I need to send someone to where they'll get a real taste of Southeastern style BBQ, I'll send them to Smithfield's. No, it's not the cheapest restaurant in town. The menu prices constantly adjust, as food prices go higher. And that's how I know that I'm continuing to get the same quality of food at Smithfield's. Down the menu we go: BBQ Sandwich with Slaw: My all time favorite. Tell them to double up on the slaw if you want a truly excellent sandwich. BBQ: The closest you can come to real NC BBQ if you aren't dragging a pig cooker behind your truck. Fried Chicken: Really excellent. Moist on the inside, crispy and not-so-greasy on the outside. BBQ Chicken - Grilled with a sweet, vinegar red sauce. Very good if you're going for a non-fried option. Otherwise, stick with the fried chicken. Seafood: Decent. May I ask why you're ordering seafood at a BBQ joint? Hushpuppies - So good, with just a hint of onion. Slaw - Hands down, the best slaw in the area. Brunswick Stew - Really a sleeper hit on the menu. Potato Salad - It's alright. Potatoes are a little more "al dente" than I prefer. Pecan Pie - Good to better than average. Banana Pudding - A waste of money. It's basically banana flavored jello pudding with some Nilla Wafers. We moved here from NJ last year and cannot get enough of Smithfield's chicken. We had it our first night here in NC and it's become a dinner staple. Went to this place as we always like to try new BBQ. First off, we were greeted as if we were not welcome. No clue why. Once we received our food, we sat down and found food caked on the table as well as the ones around us. Disgusting. Many flies buzzing around as well. In the background we could here the staff arguing and dropping f-bombs every 5 seconds. Now the food. My wife had the chicken which was way over cooked and dry. Horrid. I have the ribs which were tough and over cooked as well. This was the worst experience we have EVER had in a BBQ joint. Stay away from here for sure. I would hate to see what goes on in the kitchen. It's been a long time since we've had Smithfield's, it's just as good as we remembered. The food is amazing as always, you know it's going to be good. But the staff in this restaurant is just fantastic. Attentive, but not hovering, the tables are cleaned promptly everybody pitches in and makes sure this place it in order and everybody is pleased with their experience. We stopped here on our way home from the beach this past Memorial Day weekend aside from our usual Cracker Barrel stop. The location itself is right off the highway and beside a gas station, a Wilco-Hess I believe. So, after filling up we decided to stay on the same side of the street, keep it easy and quick and just eat at Smithfields. Upon entering I overheard a couple coming out saying, "Man, it's freezing in there." I have to say that the temperature was perfect for me. It felt like 67-68ish....If that is cold to you I probably wouldn't eat here. But, if you are like me, I would much rather my server be comfortable and not sweating all over my plates and food. Anyway, on to the food. I ordered the Chicken Tender Sandwich Combo which I have to say was one of the worst sandwiches I have ever eaten. GREASY and unflavorful. They give you so many fries with your order that 2 people could share and still not eat them all. I noticed this before I even ordered and asked if I could just get half an order and the other half hushpuppies. I was quickly told NO and that if i wanted to add an order of 6 Hushpuppies I was welcome to do that for $1.29. So, customer service isn't one of the strengths here. We also ordered a Pulled Chicken BBQ Sandwich which came out as pulled pork. We advised the waitress that it was supposed to be chicken and she informed us that they ONLY have Pulled Pork BBQ Sandwiches. Why couldn't you say that when we ordered? Will we return? Ate dinner there tonight and it was not to their usual standard. My wife had a hotdog and fries and I had a two piece dark with beans and slaw with hush puppies. About as good as you can get for fast food bbq. The menu has everything you'd expect at an eastern North Carolina chicken and q place, and everything we've tried has been pretty good, sometimes great. For customers who are not from NC, it might help if they explained that "bbq" is synonymous with what is called "pulled pork" in other regions. The service is as excellent as the food, with well-trained, courteous staff and prompt service, and the place is kept clean. The last visit we weren't too hungry, so got the buy-one-get-one-free Brunswick stew, a great deal. Quite tasty, but a little too dense and with a touch too much sweetness for my personal taste. Stopped in while traveling with my wife and 2 year old on a Sunday for lunch. I'm not a big fan of eastern style BBQ sauce but my wife loves it. The food was served hot and in a timely manner even with a full restaurant. Great servers all seamed very friendly and helpful. The manager was very friendly and helpful to the servers and customers. You should be able to get full for $10, and the food is pretty authentic. They have a barbecue sandwich with slaw on top that is really tasty.
