0 stars. I wasn't going to write a review after our first dog passed away after a visits to Smiths veterinary but after the second one did, I'm definitely writing one. The first one was a pit we paid $700 for her lumps on her ribs to be tested (not even removed or anything) they said they weren't cancerous or dangerous and she was healthy. Not even a month later she passed away in her sleep. Not only that but the receptionist lady took my moms card from the front desk and after this transaction she had two more unknown transactions. Second dog mini schnauzer we took him in for a check up and shots in August said everything was good. Took him to emergency vet a few days ago he had to be put down due to failing kidneys and possible cancer in his lungs. This could have been caught sooner. My question is what they heck are they doing here if they aren't helping or at-least properly diagnosing. I'm not saying save our dogs from dying but DO YOUR JOB AND DIAGNOSE-PROPERLY!!! As of 2 weeks ago, I would've HIGHLY recommended this vet. I loved Dr. Gahra, Kathy and Erik. They were wonderful. I spent over $10,000 on my dogs knee surgery 2 years ago. Then this past month almost $2000 more on meds and test. When she had a reaction to the new meds, Kathy called me and Dr. Gahra worked her in the next morning. Then she followed up a week later and we were told she was doing excellent. She was not doing well. 2 days ago she suffered what appeared to be a stroke. I immediately called. Someone I never spoke to (Sierra or Sara) said they couldn't see her for 3 days. I told her she was lying on the floor unable to move. It didn't matter. She didn't even offer to leave a message for the vet. Several minutes later, she had another stroke-like episode. I called them back and told her (same girl) I was going to the ER on Ave M and asked her to send her recent records. The ER is 10 minutes from my home. I rushed out. She had several more stroke-like seizures in my arms before dying. I tried to give her mouth to mouth but I couldn't bring her back. Minutes after we arrived at the ER, where the staff were waiting. In a panic, I came in carrying her limp body, praying they could revive her. Sadly, she was gone. I went home to tell Dr. Gahra and let them know. Again, same girl on the phone. I said, "I want to let you know Dixie didn't make it." Her reply, "I'll cancel your appointment on Monday." Unbelievable. Never took a message for the vet, nothing. Not even an "I'm sorry." I just purchased 2 months of heart meds that were over $425 and she only took 2 days worth. I'm concerned these meds are what caused her attacks and killed her. She was perfectly normal until I gave her her meds, then an hour later, all these attacks, eventually killing her. Since the medications were so expensive, I asked if I could donate them to another pet owner using them. I paid for them and I hoped they could benefit someone else. The girl said "No, throw them away." I understand having to have a hard heart working in medicine. I did it for over a decade, however, I've lost many pets and NEVER was treated as cold as I was 3 days ago. I'm thinking it's time to find another office. I'm hurt that Dr. Gahra is now so busy he doesn't even take calls. I'm not saying my dog could've been saved, but I'll never know. And the worst part is not knowing why this happened. The staff at Animal ER were so very compassionate and beyond comforting. They said it was a tumor (since they never got records sent from Dr. Gahra despite me asking them be sent over) in her abdomen which Dr. Gahra told me was a hernia. So I'm left with unanswered questions and an emotional support dog gone. If you want to spend thousands of dollars, go here. But, don't expect them to be available for an emergency. read more

Okay, so we went here to get a second opinion thinking that they will have good services for our cat but no. We felt that we were ripped off. Let's go straight to the point. Here are the reasons why I'm giving them 1 star. 1. It has been 2 WEEKS and we haven't received any news/result from the URINE MIC test lab they did. Initially, they said it will take 2-5 days for the results but we never got it. What a waste of money. It seems they don't care at all. 2. Catheter - So we agreed to let them put catheter on our cat since he was a hard time peeing. Turns out they weren't able to put catheter on him. Take note: the vet that did the procedure her hand was injured so basically she'll be having a hard time doing it but they still insisted on having him on catheter. The result, they charged us but they didn't put the catheter on. WHAT A FREAKIN WASTE OF MONEY!! ARE YOU FOR REALS!!!! So we went to another vet and within just a few minutes they were able to put a catheter on my cat. See? We paid double. TSK!!!!!!!!!! 3. We paid for 6 canned food and they forgot to give it to us on that day. Why? Because probably they were in a hurry to closed since it was almost 6pm. I just noticed it when we got home that we actually paid for the food. So we came back the next day to get it. Waste of money. Waste of gas. Waste of time. 4. Why charge us for Professional services when they weren't able to performed the procedure the first place. 5. Paid $1,200 for ripping us off. Infairness, the front desk was nice to us. We demand refund for the services that was not performed and for the lab test result that was not given to us. read more

I have ended my association with Smith Animal Hospital as of today. Why? Tired of being overcharged and lack of consistent explanation for charges. Example: I received a 180 dollar charge for "Senior Wellness" for my 22 month Husky. Asked two receptionist' separately and received two completely different stories. I am submitting my bills for review by the California Department of Consumer Affairs Veterinary Medical Board. If you have been over charged or had similar experiences I encourage you to submit similar correspondence with the Medical Board and other consumer protection agencies. read more

I have been taking my animals here for the past 20 years. Different vets have come and gone, but I've always gotten good treatment. The staff and vets have always been very friendly and knowledgable. The current vet, Dr. Garha, diagnosed my dog with an ear infection and my cat with an abscess. I knew this going in, but needed the antibiotic treatments. I also paid for blood work for a future dental appointment. The total cost for the treatment was expensive, $575 with the 10% off senior discount. I have found that the price is comparable to most vets that I have been to. I appreciate the good service I receive here and will continue to bring my pets here in the future. read more

I really like Dr. Gara with handling my senior dog. He does not order unnecessary tests if not needed. He is very nice and I feel comfortable with this vet. I did not like the prior vet Sara because she always wanted me to do a bunch of tests for no reason. I ended up taking my dog to a heart specialist and said she was completely fine. We took our two dogs here to get spaded and it was the worst. Took my dog not only months to recover but her incision was completely crooked and not even sewen all the way shut. On top of that after taking her back to get the stitches removed they left a huge piece still inside and the scar has now after months healed with the stitch still hanging out. Flynn and Gara are wonderful, caring vets and have been with me every step of the way through some pretty difficult times. We have taken our pets to Smith Vet for over 10 years. They are always kind and compassionate. They are great about fitting our pets in and the shot clinic is easy to use. Most importantly, they go above and beyond caring for our pets. I called their office after hours about a puppy getting into some medicine. Their answering service got me in touch with a vet tech and I had instructions from the vet within 15 minutes! If I could get this kind of service from human doctors! A year ago we went through end of life process with our beloved German shepherd. The staff was kind and caring as though it was a member of their own family. They even sent a hand written condolence card. This place is a class act. read more

Wait time is ridiculous only 4 cars in the parking lot and about 9 employees working the parking lot and it still took over 40 minutes just to get the first set of papers picked up from us after being signed. Keep in mind there was also 10 different times when an employee could have came over to our car to pick up the paperwork which was clearly displayed on my car dash which they had requested. I was nervous about going here. It's hard to change doctors. I have been going to AKAL for many years and felt comfortable with him. All of a sudden AKAL was gone and a new hospital is here! Although I miss my previous doctor, I found Dr. Garha to be very caring and knowledgeable. He knew what was wrong with Oscar and gave me a reasonable plan to help him with his urinary problem. All of the staff made me feel good about being here. I did find that I can't just walk in to see the doctor. They are busier and I had to wait. But it was worth it. Next time I will call ahead for an appointment as they suggested. They did make me comfortable and keep me updated as I was waiting. I was also able to appreciate the smell. That was the first thing I noticed when I walked in! It used to smell so bad, but somehow they made it good. Oh, and they have vaccine clinic too so you don't have to see the doctor for shots. Just sign a waiver that you're only getting vaccines without seeing the doctor. read more

I like the way Dr. Flynn works with my older kitty. Today we got bloodwork and she also has an upper respiratory infection. If the blood work is good we will probably have her teeth cleaned and maybe if you pulled.since my kitty is a rescue cat I have no idea about the first 10 years of her life. Smith Vet is a wonderful place. I enjoy the receptionist Kathy the most! I am sad that my favorite doctor left the practice, but I feel this office is one of the most honest places. Just remember you will get what you pay for when it comes to pet services, they're not the cheapest but I wouldn't want that anyway. This is am AMAZING place to take our family with 4 legs! The staff is very kind and helpful. The vet Dr.gahra is very kind and his bedside manor with my sassi was great. This place was great. My poor Charlie had an allergic reaction to a bug/spider bite and the folks here at Smith Vet Hospital took him right in and took care of him. They gave him the care he needed right away and on top of that, they didn't forget to be loving and sweet with him. Now we are back home resting from all the meds and we will have to go back tomorrow to take out the meds catheter - which is just in case the reaction gets worse again and we have to go back. A few weeks ago my daughter called to tell me our pup got into the pantry and ate the chocolate chips. I went home on break to check on him - she had already got him to vomit and he seemed to be ok so I went back to work. I thought it was lucky he only got into the milk chocolate chips and not my regular baking chips. When I got home that afternoon, he was looking much worse and I was so worried he wouldn't make it through the night! I rushed him to Smith Vet and they took him right in, even though they were in the process of closing! Dr. Flynn was amazing and very caring - got some medications and fluids into him and SAVED him! I watched him through the night and took him back in the next morning because he seemed a bit dehydrated. Dr. Garha gave him some more fluids and he pulled through perfectly! I wish I could give negative stars for Smith Veterinary. Our family dog got extremely sick it seemed like over night. My mom brought our dog there in the morning, & with his condition they said there was nothing they could do for him. By the afternoon he was gone. The shock in that was devastating enough. I remember bring him home when he was only 2 months old, & he almost made it to 13. So to say he was a member of the family is an understatement. I could not believe it when my mom AND sister both said how cold, & unfriendly the staff was to them. We've been taking our pets there for about 10 years. But the new staff they have in there are just plain cold & rude. They need to take a class in compassion. Our family pet was dying & all of them seemed to have cared less. Our dog had unfortunately bled a lot in their hallway, & exam room. One of the attendants was mopping the hallway, & shut the exam room door like she was very annoyed. Leaving my mom and sister in the room with all that blood to step in. & even after our dog has passed, no one said anything. Not even a word. Thank you for the compassion. I work/live in LA, I drove all the way up to Lancaster to say my final goodbye to my dear dog. My mom & I got up early & called to see when we could come in to do so. We've done it before & it never seemed to be a problem. But the rude lady on the phone, said nope. & that was that. Even had the nerve to say "we should have never done that in the first place" (meaning let another family member say goodbye to other pets if they weren't able to be there when they were first put down) Her cold and callus tone shocked us, & was very inappropriate for grieving clients. Maybe if your pet just needs a quick in and out visit Smith is ok. But if you have a dying pet, or need to have your pet put to sleep... DO NOT GO TO SMITH VETERINARY HOSPITAL. I will never again go there, or recommend this place. Horrible service and staff. read more

They gave my daughter expired antibiotics for her cat, ran near 500 dollars worth of tests, and would not take back the 50.00 antibiotics. While visitng my sister in Lancaster my little 8 pound baby was attacked by two pitt bulls and almost killed, my sister called her vet and told them what happened, after we caught my baby and took her in she was given VIP treatment and taken in surgery right away, THEY SAVED HER LIFE THAT NIGHT....THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONCERN, PROFESSIONAL MANNER, and all the work to save her life. The fact that I made a yelp account just to deter anyone from coming here says it all. I have owned animals my entire life and have been through many vets offices, some really bad and some good. This is by far the worst vet I have ever visited. I wouldn't send a flea here. First red flag, they took my dog to the back and they told me they were going to shave my dog and needle the bump to see what's inside. The doctor comes back with videos (on her phone) of them cutting a hole and aggressively pinching my dog in three different spots to clear the cyst. None of this was advised to me nor did I agree to this treatment. Second red flag, they kept my dog in the back until I signed their ridiculously priced quote (which included a pain killer injection for his new cuts). Far more to it, but to keep this short, they also don't provide individual expense break downs on what they "recommend"...why not? What are they hiding? They are in it for the money and provides unnecessary treatment to these poor animals. My dog does not need surgery and they want to cut his chest open to remove his lipomas...isn't there a less medieval and invasive method to check for cancer these days? That's like telling a human they need to remove all moles and skin tags to see if they have cancer. They want this surgery for the charges. Take your animals to a more caring and more thoughtful place than this. read more

I have been driving by this vet for years. We had been to another hospital that wanted to charge us over $1,000.00 for tests on a growth on the ankle our 8 year old doberman. We took her home and changed her diet and she did fine for about a year. Recently she became very sick. I thought about Smith's and decided to give them a try. I am so happy I did. All of the ladies in the office are so caring, professional and compassionate. The doctor was very communicative and empathetic. He took a lot of time to talk with me and discuss tests, treatment options and so forth. He did X-Rays and blood work and ruled out cancer for less than $400.00. In addition, the office is extremely clean and I highly recommend them. Our girl is 9 1/2 now and her prognosis is guarded. We will be going back in the next couple of days. Smith deserves more than 5 stars. They rescued our rescue and made an expensive decision more affordable. We didn't know anything was wrong with a dog we bought from a stranger and Smith worked with us which prevented our dog from being put to sleep. Sophia the Sharpei went from not moving, eating, drinking or pooping at all to running like a new puppy in 48-hours! We are happy with our new puppy and thank the vets at Smith for their service!! read more

They Took care of my baby hazel very well ! She had a foxtail stuck in her paw and i couldn't find it but the doctors sure did ! Didn't overcharge like many other vets and where very attentive to our dogs' needs , Coco got her vaccination as well . Another happy customer :) will be taking them back if ever needed to . I chose this this place because they were affordable but most importantly, Dr. Flynn was all about pet care an pain management. I knew my little one was in good hands during surgery. I didn't have to leave her over night but was sent home with extensive instructions on how to care for my pup after surgery. She's at home resting. Thank you to Dr. Flynn and staff ! I turned to Smiths for help. They got their hooks in. My dog had an ear infection. I bought the meds from them at $53.90. Entire bill was $108.00. The ear medicine is not working. They said bring her in and we will do a re-check for $28.00. After that they will sell me more meds. Why didn't they do it right the first time? Now I ask, since this is their mistake, how about giving me back my money?? I spent $108. the first visit. Next is another $28.00 and another medication (estimate) $54.00. Geez, that's another $82.00 at least!! A combined total for 2 visits of at least $190.00.. Do you see what's going on here? They also offered a culture to be done the second time, not on the first visit. LOL. They lead me to believe the ear medicine is all she needed, now they say they didn't know what kind of infection she had. So why not find out first?? I didn't know there are different type, I'm not a doctor. When does it end? What were they treating her for the first time that they sold me the wrong medicine??? I won't go back!! read more

I brought my dog in to have him checked out for some pain in his back. Though the facility was nice and the receptionist was thorough and professional, I was very unhappy with the rest of my visit here. I felt that the vet was very unprofessional. Although he greeted my pet, he didn't ask me any questions about what was going on. I decided to tell him anyway about what my pet was experiencing. Without even giving my pet any kind of evaluation, he went straight to wanting to order x-rays and left to the billing department. After thinking it over, I decided I wanted to hold off for a couple days to see if my Dog improved. I asked for my bill to cover the visit, and the vet insisted my dog needed pain medication. I politely declined and after a long wait, I was finally able to leave with my dog and a report from the visit. I immediately made an appointment at Boulevard Veterinary Hospital and was happy to finally get some answers at a fraction of the cost with an actual evaluation. read more
