Smoked fish on fried potatoes: this had a tomato coulis that overpowered all other flavors. The potato was soggy with oil. The restaurant Clementines does a similar dish but does it right Omelette-- good Beef hash ( what they tend to run out of) -- hearty portion, lovely beef with good seasoning, no green peppers is a BIG win, lots of kale, mushrooms, red pepper and onion, on a bed of home fries. We were staying at The Inn At The Forks hotel so naturally had to try Smith since it's attached. Did not disappoint. Plenty of veggie, fish, and meat options. The cauliflower fritters were insane. Truly delicious! The katsu tofu was good too. The broccolini had a wonderful char. My only complaint was it had too much rice and would do better with more veg. My friend had the oysters and the clams and said both were awesome but especially the clams since it was a large portion with tasty broth and grilled bread to dip. This is my third time have brunch here and my family's second. We all have our favorites. I always order the Turkish eggs. A deliciously satisfying vegetarian dish with hummus, labenah, pickled onions, poached eggs and served with pita. My husband ordered the eggs royale for the second time, a smoked salmon Benedict with potato rosti replacing the English muffin. The ten year old ordered the kids teddy bear pancake. Their coffee and an always superb and the ten year old loves their hot chocolate. Staff are always helpful and friendly. The atmosphere feels upscale. So it's almost shameful. I have eaten here 4 times in the last 24 hours. I've had 2 late night bites, brunch and dinner. The food is excellent. I enjoyed a meat board and cheese board. By myself and I don't know if I should be proud or disgusted with myself. I'm going with proud. Both were presented beautifully with nice options and were well balanced. My brunch dish of Eggs Royale was perfectly cooked, packed with flavour and cooked exactly as asked with medium poached eggs. My dinner was oysters and gnocchi. The oysters came with everything they needed and tasted so fresh. The gnocchi was one of those dishes that you will dream of-pillowy gnocchi with a nice amount of spinach and tomatoes. Excellent! The service each time was extremely gracious and pleasant. I had nice conversations with each server, even at dinner at the bar top. The restaurant is both cozy and trendy. There are warm booths, comfortable tables and even the bar top felt intimate and nice. The live music on Saturday night was outstanding. Such a great vibe and I felt like I was at a personal concert. We arrived at Smith Restaurant on the evening of February 3rd, 2024. The restaurant was noisy, loud, cacophonous and did I mention that it was very noisy? My wife and I were, at first, seated at a table that was so poorly lit that we couldn't read our menus. We asked for a different table and after quite a long while we were moved to a better lit table. The waitress said she would take our coats to the cloak room which had not been pointed out to us nor even mentioned to us upon our arrival. She took my wife's coat to the cloak room but she threw my coat onto the floor and walked away. Another worker saw her do it, picked up the coat and took it away. The food was okay. The noise level was not. The service was pretty good except for the fact we could not hear what the waitress was trying to tell us. Ever since making the reservation online I have been receiving emails championing Smith Restaurant. These are emails that I do not want to receive. Every time I get one I try to "unsubscribe" from the email list but they just keep on coming. Phone calls to the restaurant complaining about the emails don't have any effect on the "unsubscibe" nonsense. We are staying at the Inn at the Forks and had a complimentary breakfast. The breakfast was fantastic. The hubs and I both got the eggs with home potatoes and toast. Then because it sounded good we also got the hummus with smoked olive tapenade. I used the hummus as a spread on the bread with the egg and olive mix and it was so good. A side of the herbed house potatoes and it was a great start to the morning. We had plenty of leftover hummus and pita for a meal later too. Service was fast and really friendly. read more

On a recent weekend getaway to Winnipeg, my husband and I decided to make a reservation at Smith for dinner and I am so glad we did. I am still dreaming about the meal we had - every bite of it was fantastic. We shared the beet salad and sourdough to start. Beet salad was a perfect combination of beets, greens, cheese, citrus and sunflower seeds. Was a large serving and more than enough for the two of us to share. I had one of the specials of the night - salmon with polenta which had a creamy sauce, then one more like a pesto which blended into a perfect flavour combination. My husbands gnocchi was also very good. We ate fairly early so it wasn't too busy yet which was nice. I imagine it gets loud when it is busy. They got bonus points for having great mocktails too. Went there for Valentine's Day. First the positives.. beautiful atmosphere and decent service. Wine was good. Unfortunately food was very poor. We had the oysters which half smelt old, it was nice of staff to come half of them. Mussels were tasteless and extremely small portion, less than 10 mussels combined w peppers and onions in a watery sauce . Arctic char was cooked perfectly but accompaniments were bland . Sauce tasted like plain milk. My partner had a steak that was overdone. There's a lot better places out there for the money in my opinion. We were a party of 8, it was a surprise birthday get together for my husband. We were last to arrive, and greeted by the hostess with "hi! Are you here for the surprise birthday party?" So... right there this place was pretty ruined for me, as was the surprise for my husband. The service throughout the evening was friendly, but so so so slow! The food was hit and miss. The pickerel was delicious! As was the filet mignon. The beef tartare was fine but underwhelming, definitely not worth the price... the fried chicken was disgusting, like it was fried in lukewarm oil, so soggy and greasy. The burger appeared to be a flavourless frozen patty in an old bun. The prices are outrageous for what you get here. Everything is a la carte, so your bill is sky high! Went in a group of six the other night. Decorations and atmosphere was the reason we chose this place plus the food seems decent. I ordered oysters, half rack lamb and share a side of fries with my friend. They were all fine, not really what I had in mind but sure looks good? As we were ordering, most of us chose not to orders sides since none of us really eat that much. As a result it was the right choose cuz we all barely finished our food. But the server kept on suggesting us to order 3 sides. Keep coming back to ask us to order more food... even tho we said no every single time she came by, she still manage to keep coming... Smith may be my new favourite restaurant in Winnipeg! The decor, the food, the staff... all fabulous! The place is a cozy corner of Canadiana with the antler-inspired lights, the stunning wood everywhere and my favourite part, the Hudsons Bay wool blanket covered seats. Whether you sit in the lounge or the restaurant, there's no bad seat. The drink menu is vast and creative. I'm a big fan of the flights of beer and the cocktail list but you can't discount the wine list as it's a solid list. I got to try my new favourite beer there, the Vanilla Porter. Not a big deal, but thought it was because it was busy.. not the case. I had to send 2 spoons and a coffee cup back as they were dirty. My kids show up and we all ordered a few Mimosas and Brut and then ordered, the food took a very long time, and then we had to wait for salt and pepper and sauces, I watched our server running around the restaurant looking for shakers, while my eggs got colder. My bill was almost $150 + tip, for a brunch, seems high. The coffee came to $14, which is steep. We came to this restaurant because the food court at the market was way too hectic . The atmosphere here was very relaxing and clean. I ordered the Smith main burger which I felt was quite delicious . The meat was juicy and cooked just right. Nothing too special about the burger but I would place it in the top 25% of burgers I've ever had, because it was done right. The service was great (we brought two small kids). They had off menu kids meals (Mac n cheese, burger, etc) which was helpful. I would have liked to see a plastic cup option, and some sort of kid activity (crayons?) would have been useful. Smith is the new restaurant at Inn at the Forks - taking over where the Current used to be. Wow...what a change this has been. Goodbye traditional Current and hello cool Smith. The decor is cool, modern and inviting. The lounge has these cool antler chadeliers with HBC blanket banquettes, big open dining room with some small rooms for smaller parties and a larger room in the back where there's lots of light flowing in from the windows. Chef Alex Svenne, formerly of Bistro 7 & 1/4 serves up hearty seasonal food family style. The menu has a lot going on as there are snacks, apps to share, soups/salads and then the mains. I wouldn't recommend this place if you like to eat on the light side or if you are a vegetarian. This place leans on the comfort food / carnivore side. You can mix and match a lot depending how hungry you are. Everything is a la carte so mains are just the protein with sides $6-$9 each. The mains are meant to be shared family style so for two people two mains plus some sides means there's definitely a doggy bag to take home. A table of 4 is probably the best number of people to share with at this place. On to the food: - pounded cheese, garlic chips, cider vinegar, chives, fried sour dough ($12) is great appy if you love cheesed and butter mashed together into a spread and then slathered onto bread. Pricey apppetizer considering the items on the dish but it was pretty good. - veal sweetbreads, mushroom gravy, pickled beans ($16) - very good sweatbreads, very rich dish but worth ordering - baked pork belly, pork shoulder, grits, tomato ($14) - pork belly was dry and the overall flavours were pretty sedate - skip this one. - roast rack of lamb, herbs de provence, lamb jus ($36) - meat was more on the rare side and not very tender, the jus was flavourful but I wouldn't order this one again. - duck breast special ($22) - duck was also a bit tough despite being served medium rare - 20 oz canada prime rib steak, bone marrow butter ($36) - this was a winner. Flavourful, well marbled, and very tender and was divine with the bone marrow butter. Get this one. - rack of berkshire pork, apple, fennel, dates, cider ($25) - very juicy but eat this one while it's hot as it dries out if you let it sit too long. great flavour with the apple and dates. Side dishes are small and probably easier to share between 2 people as they come in a size slightly larger than a ramekin. - baked cream corn ($8) was really creamy and sumptuous - smith fries with truffle salt, pecorino, thyme ($8) were good but pricey for what you get -.the baked beans, smoked pork hock, buttered crumbs ($9) is what you expect baked beans to be - mac and cheese ($9) has a good mixture of cheese without being too salty or overly creamy. very good side dish. Sat outside on the patio and was pretty shocked to have mice jumping inches away from our table from the planter boxes. Told the waitress as we had a hard time eating our meals and trying to ignore the mice. Wasn't offered to be moved or any apologies only was told yes they are really hard to get rid of cause they are outside and that they have been a really big problem lately. I get that this is an outdoor patio but come on deal with it in a more urgent matter, it was gross to see mouse droppings all around the base of our table not to mention the distance mice were to our dinners. Next time (if there is) I'd stick to eating indoors, or probably just go someone with a few more menu options and or somewhere that treats mouse issues a bit more seriously so we can still enjoy patio season/weather. read more

Lighting needs to be improved as they do not dim at this point hurting the ambience. Our server was knowledgable and engaging while young support staff need more training, this can be expected with an independent new restaurant. Cocktails were great. Went here last night with some friends. The decor is really nice. They have faux deer antler chandeliers and low lighting and lots of wood. Beautiful. The patio is spacious and has a mix of lounging areas and tables - also great. The menu is a little trendy but very tasty. You can easily make meals of out their appetizers which have decent portion sizes. The half roasted chicken was outstanding. I wish I was the one out group that ordered it. The steak was mediocre at best and very expensive. The price points on this menu are a little odd. $30 for an a-la-carte streak might be ok if the steak was delicious but at that price point we felt it was asking too much. The warm beet salad with orange, the mac and cheese app, the humous & the sweet potato au-gratin apps were all delicious. As for the service, I need to say that generally I have low expectations anywhere at the forks. I've had consistent poor service at absolutely every location at the forks for years now. I go for the location, not the service - and the service people must know this because they don't seem to care however; the service here at this place was notably higher than the surrounding venues. They were friendly and seemed knowledgable about the menu but I noticed that patio tended to have service gaps at several points throughout the evening. I showed up with a friend on a Friday evening in late August. Well-dressed, late 20s, had not been drinking before or anything like that. We were coldly greeted by three hostesses who asked us if we had a reservation. We did not. We could clearly see into the restaurant, and despite there being several open tables and spots at the bar behind them, they told us in a very dismissive tone that they were not taking walk ins. When we asked if there was a waiting list, they said no. No explanations from them at all. I was quite appalled by the whole experience. I have lived in Winnipeg my whole life and have never experienced this kind of treatment at any other restaurant ever. Very clean and quiet restaurant, great view looking out towards "The Forks". I started off with some in-house Beef Barley soup, which was ok; other then being very salty. They did bring out some complimentary bread. Which was non-stop. My entree I had a full rack of Lamb, which was cooked perfect. It's been hard finding a good place in Winnipeg that knows how to cook lamb perfect. I would give 10 out of 10 for the lamb. Sides do not come with your entree which you have to pay for on top of your main course, but the portion size for the side is big enough for 2 people. For my side I had herb and garlic sautéed mushrooms. I had a rum and coke to start and ended with a sprite, which were both really good. read more

Wow!! After the hype for years from my son and his partner, this was dismal at best. A 30th birthday party for 13... of course 18% gratuity already tacked on so there was ZERO service. It took 40 minutes for our food to be served, when we asked ONE time only, we were told it takes a LONG time to cook my son's mother-in-law's medium-well steak. We cook steak at least once a week, although none of us eat it cooked that much. It does not take 40 minutes. We clone how to cook fine cuts of meat. Then, the steak was served very undercooked. Less than medium. We go to fine restaurants all the time with top notch food and service. One wait staff for 13 people!!? Then, when the food finally came, the fishes for our party at least 10 minutes apart, my daughter-in-law had a long blond hair cooked right into her gnocchi. It didn't phase the wait person we had at all. No manager, no apology, nothing. My husband's Catch of the Day, Pan-Seared Halibut for $38 was dry, over-cooked and tiny ,and the potato was like a crispy hash brown. He liked it but had a huge bowl of cereal as soon as we got home! All 3 people who had the Caesar salad had to ask for more dressing. This is not an inexpensive restaurant and we always pay top dollar for quality food and service. Smith had neither quality food or service. This was a 30th birthday dinner!! Lots of us changed our schedules, and drove from afar to attend. The birthday boy was so embarrassed, although nothing that happened was his fault. We will NEVER return and will tell all our friends about our experience. Also, nobody pulled a Karen! This would never occur with any of the people in our party, not that there was a person about to complain to. We all had to ask for our bills and then had wait for them. Such a disappointing evening. They did take the gnocchi off my other son's bill, but this was whispered to him without so much as an "I'm sorry or this is unheard of." We've eaten at many top-notch restaurants world-wide so we know what to expect. We easily dropped $1000 with our entire party and this was a such shame for terrible service and food and no manager around to share our experience with. Every couple had to go find the one waitress to get our bills and we were basically ignored most of the night. I guess groups are served this way at Smith??!! Entrees enjoyed were the pickerel, beef, half chicken! I had the beast of the day and it was an 11/10! Would definitely recommend this restaurant. The ambience is a hybrid between hunter's lair and hipster's cove. I ate here three meals in succession due to some work business. The first meal was a burger, which initially delighted me because the bread came sliced in a rustic configuration with a small pyramid of pink salt on the wood board. I asked the server to make my meat well done; it came back a charred mini turd that was salty enough to make the roof of my mouth throb. The salad dressing was quite unique, accented with little seeds and a delightful milky vinaigrette. Unfortunately, something I ate there resulted in a righteous nausea at 3 am. I woke up from a dream where I was being transported in a spaceship that rocked like a drunken galleon and dropped me into the depths of a black hole in 80+ degree heat. I felt my brains were melting like wax in a lava lamp and my whole digestive tract was twisting in an endless loop. I went and got sick in the night until 5 am. Couldn't sleep and had to rise at 6:30 am to be ready for the next day's rigors. Had to eat at this place again because that was the only place I was allowed to eat given my travel arrangements. Managed to sip a bit of this and that, like a picky neurotic bird. Then, whence dinner came around, it was like living my doom. I had the fried chicken and it was pink and bloody around the bone. The waitress chastised me for not letting her know, and then tried to "chef-talk" me into believing that it was a special technique rendered by the sous-vide machine. Please, I am one of the most skilled foodie discourse fakers ever; I know that sous-vide machines don't make raw bloody chicken okay no matter how rigorously you pronounce the French accent or try to explicate away the not-so-okay (et je peux faire ca aussi, mademoiselle). So in the end, if you would like to avoid early morning intestinal eruptions, perhaps think carefully about les repas. The servers were fine.
