You walk into Smiling BBQ and the first thing you notice is... nothing flashy. No trendy decor. No Instagram walls. And that's exactly the point. This is what real Chinese BBQ skewers looks like. The kind of place that doesn't need to impress you with aesthetics because the food already knows what it's doing. Family-owned, family-run. The staff is the family. And you feel it immediately, like you've stepped into a small neighborhood restaurant somewhere between Hong Kong and mainland China. There's a warmth here that can't be manufactured. The menu is simple, but every bite takes you back. From the beer selection to the grilled oysters to the BBQ itself... it's all honest, soulful, and unapologetically authentic. The kind of food that reminds you why street-side spots and humble kitchens often outshine overpriced "modern" versions trying too hard to be something they're not. And let's talk value. For the price? You absolutely cannot beat this place. Other spots charge more, dress it up, and somehow deliver less. Here, the quality is front and center... smoky, savory, deeply satisfying. What really blows my mind is how hidden this place still is. A quiet gem tucked away, flying under the radar, waiting for people who actually care about flavor over frills. This isn't a restaurant chasing trends. It's a place preserving something real. And honestly? That's rare.

It's an okay place to go to if you're up for a late night snack. The food is cheap but mediocre, and the restaurant is very barebones and not the cleanest. The service was good though, as the owner was a great host and very attentive. But maybe that was because we were the only ones there...

Not recommended. The bbq is too dry with burnt meat. Also the sauce is way too strong and just superficially brushed on the bbq. The cold dish and sweet sour pork are iconic northeastern China food but the quality is a bit disappointing.

    Awesome squid bbq

Bbq here is akin to the Taiwan night markets, poor quality ingredients included. Beef and lamb is chewy and hard but the squid is rather tasty and flavored with seasoning. Difference is Taiwan gives you an entire squid about 6 inches long not parts like here. The spinach and nuts is marinated cold and good. Pork belly isn't bad either

I don't even know where to start. When I came inside the restaurant, I felt like taking shots of tequila because it felt like a bar but I ended up getting wonton soup and egg noodles - it was actually good :)

While we appreciated the complimentary birthday dish, we did not feel that the service justified an automatic 18% tip. Tipping should reflect the quality of the service and should never be demanded or pressured. They have just about every organ meat you could ask for, and I liked that all the sides and meats are displayed clearly if you want to order by the pound instead of from the menu. Service was fast and friendly. Now I just need to recruit a bigger group so we can come back, order family style, and work our way through more of the menu.
