I've been to this place probably 100+ times over several years and the manager, Keaton, has always tried to keep high standards. Unfortunately, I've had two instances where the cook, Henry, has served me a burger with one patty when I ordered double. Not to mention the haystack onions which looked like they've been sitting in the fryer all day. The first time this happened, I immediately returned and the error was corrected only after I was disrespected in front of all the other customers and had to insist it was corrected (no apologies). The second time, I knew it was busy hours so I waited until the next day to go back. HENRY was extremely disrespectful and yelled at me in front of everyone asking why I didn't call by phone to let them know... like that would've mattered. In reality, I had limited time, didn't want to bother them during rush hour for no reason, and took time to come tell them the next day when they weren't busy. He did not offer me anything to make up for it, yelled at me, and ended up ROBBING ME. BTW, I'm a student and don't own a car... I will never dine at Smashburger again! First and last time customer. They open at 10:00 (Saturday). I came in at 10:05. No one up front. The staff saw me after 5 minutes and then went to the back without saying a word. 15 minutes later, the staff comes back and says prep work had to be done. Kind of bad to keep a customer waiting for 20 minutes due to lack of prep. Food came out fast. Sadly it was below average. The burger was incredibly small, and the flavor wasn't great. Sadly, I would place a Burger King whopper far above this in terms of quality, in addition to size. 1 star for me. Poor service for a disappointing, small, below average burger. Went there on a recommendation of a coworker. I must say it is one of the best burger experience I've had in a while. I had the avocado club Big burger with blue cheese crumble and sweet potato fries the meal was great but i wish they had a double big burger. When I got there they had just ran out of regular and smash fries so I had a choice of sweet potato fries or haystack onions. I ended up with someone else order. That really didn't bother me since the orders came out so quickly and it was busy. Minor slip up, two thumbs up for the staff for handling it under pressure a correcting the orders. A very good fresh burger restaurant. We both ordered the BBQ burger with cheddar cheese and fried onion stings. I added tomatoes and fresh avocado slices. The outside of the burger was grilled perfect and the inside not over cooked. I also ordered the Fresh Hand Mixed Strawberry Milk Shake. So thick and made with fresh strawberries. The burgers here are very decent! I like the toppings on them, like the Greek burger with cucumber, spinach and feta. It tastes fresh and pretty light (for a burger). The smash fries are really good. The service is not great. There was a manager working who seemed really on top of it and very friendly, but the other staff were a little rude. We saw a stack of to-go boxes and I thought I could grab one. Someone snapped at me that only the staff could get them for me. That's fine! I just didn't know! We have been going here since they opened and always really enjoyed the good and especially the smash fries. Smash fries were skinny cut fries with olive oil and spices not them that were amazing. In the last two months though, the fries changed and now they are just disgusting. The meat blend changed to something from Wendy's and the overall care of the place has fallen- the last three times I visited, I had to tell them there was no soap in the rest room. The prices have risen about 15% as well. I discussed these issues with the manager and she was nice but it is not worth the money now. Before when we went the line was always out the door and now there is no line. They have to be putting that together or they just don't care. Why mess with a good thing? Please bring back the original smash burger! read more

I found the burgers here to be delicious and juicy, and their signature smash fries are great. I have to restrain myself from ordering a milkshake when I visit! The interior is a little cramped particularly when it's busy, and they're a little pricey for me to return on a regular basis. Fast and tasty. Lots of selections and vegetarian/vegan friendly. I got the goat cheese and spinach black bean burger (also had balsamic, red onion and tomato on it) along with the sweet potato smash fries. Smash fries are mixed with olive oil and Rosemary. Only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is because the black bean burger was a bit undercooked, but that didn't bother me much. I'm updating my review because the owners really care about this place. I finally got to dine-in and I had a wonderful lunch. The employees acted like real people and were very helpful to me since I had a baby. I am a creature of habit and I always get the same burger - and it tasted delicious. The sweet potato fries were perfect! The restaurant is very clean and still new looking. I definitely enjoy the food dining in better than my take out- but that's usually how it is if you can't space travel home. Looking forward to my next visit! read more

That is something i wanna ask the person who made my burger because it was so beautiful that i didn't want to eat it!! even with it being delivered, it came out beautiful. this was my first time eating here and i didn't know what to expect. When i unwrapped my burger I immediately smiled! I would also like to do a comparison real fast... get a burger from anywhere that is too big or has more than one patty and you end up with meat or the bun sliding which ends up in it being messy and just frustrating to eat. ex. a big mac. BUT i got a 3 patty smash burger and it held up so well that at the end of my meal i had a pinch of bread left. It was still messy but in a good way, wasn't hard to keep together even with the extra stuff i added. so with that being said, i will absolutely be referring family, friends and associates to this restaurant! if you want a good burger that tastes like it came straight off the grill, then look no further! read more

Have heard about this chain before and tried it today for the first time. I thought it was really good. Their burgers are delicious. Meat was well-seasoned and juicy without soaking through the bun, and the toppings were very fresh. I had a standard bacon cheeseburger and look forward to trying some of their specialty burgers in the future. And I'm not usually a fan of thin-cut fries, but I really liked the flavor of their fries (olive oil and rosemary I think?). The restaurant itself is spacious and clean. Service was also excellent, and I hope that they keep it up. Staff was very helpful and friendly, and they offered to bus our table for us even though it's supposed to be self bus. These burger joints these days just load up their burgers so poorly that you need a knife, fork, gloves, poncho and a bath towel to keep the mess off of your clothes. Hubs and I ate here for lunch. I had the Carolina Chili beef burger. It was thrown together with very little toppings. The pretzel bun was cold and the burger itself was extremely salty and greasy. My husband loved his burger, for him, the sloppier and greasier the better. I didn't order a side, but tried some of his fries. They were greasy, but the flavor was outstanding. I will not be returning. I can eat a greasy, Carolina style burger tray down the road with a side quesadilla, corn dog and drink for less than the burger only price. This was my first time here and I was extremely disappointed. I'm visiting my brother for the holidays and he said I had to try their cookies and creme shake. I ordered the shake but there were no cookies in it just a vanilla shake topped with whipped creme and cookies on top. The food is not bad. I think it's a little bit pricey for the atmosphere but have gone a few times. Only issue I had was that I'm vegetarian, ordered something without bacon. I saw it come out the kitchen the waitress reminded him no bacon and the guy just takes the bacon off the burger and sent it back out. I then told the waitress that I saw it, she offered to have it made again, I declined. The manager asked what happened and I got no apology. The food is OK, probably 3-star food, but I can't recommend this place. None of the people working here respect you. I have never seen worse customer service in my life. I visited this place twice: The first time it took them 12 min to finish a line of 4 people, 35 min to have my food cooked. The meal took me about 65 min in total, which I could have finished a meal in 15min at Chipotle or Firehouse sub. So the 50min is a pure lost. In order to have a $8 meal here you'll have to lose $30 worth of your time. The second time I went here at 3PM, was the only customer in line. I got ignored for 15 min straight. Smashburger is convenient to Duke and popular for a quick lunch (though don't try to park here, since the parking lot is always overcrowded). I've been here twice, and the burgers have lived up to their name - they are smashed looking. I'm not sure why this is a good thing. The burgers themselves are dry and not very flavorful. Some of the topping combinations are quite good - I especially enjoyed the spinach and goat cheese burger. The smash fries are outstanding - lots of rosemary with garlic and olive oil. I've been to this place twice and each time the experience was disappointing. The first time the issue was more with the service than the food, although aside from the fancy toppings, there's nothing about smashburger worth even taking about. I ordered the Carolina burger (chili, slaw, onions) only to find out that my chili was really just canned sloppy joe sauce. Hey Smashburger, that aint chili. You think you're fooling me? Other issues included the wing leading to the restroom actually be closed. As in, I was not able to go to the bathroom while I was at the restaurant. That same wing of the restaurant during my first trip happened to be slicker than an ice skating rink, so I guess they decided that no bathroom was better than multiple broken bones. Aside from the Manwich posing as chili and lack of a bathroom, we found the iced tea container to be empty, they forgot to bring us our fries, and the price is not right. $10 a person for a mediocre burger, decent but not extraordinary fries, and a drink that couldn't be the iced tea we were planning on drinking. This franchise is clearly poorly run, there's no question about that. As far as the food itself goes, next time I'm looking to spend too much for "fast" food hamburgers, I'll probably head to five guys. read more

Food....quality and service. I need to write this because of what it meant to me and to recognize humanity. Wednesday, my Family had gathered from across the country to see my oldest sister who was in the ICU unit of Duke Hospital. We were hungry and I went to get food for the eight of us. I walked to the store. I placed my large order. The cashier and manager took my order and double-bagged it when they realized I was walking back to Duke ICU. As I left, the cashier said, "I will pray for your Family". I walked it back and all enjoyed the food. I told my Family what the cashier did and we all smiled. My sister passed the next day but that little comment helped a little and will stick with us for quite a while. Such a small thing..... Thank you again for the food and the feelings. read more
