When confronted, the owner becomes defensive and fails to offer a satisfactory explanation. To avoid any issues, always request a detailed, itemized list of repairs with price in included in writing before agreeing to any work. Always ask for total price which he doesn't provide. I have been on the never ending hour of trying to purchase a cruising/comfortable rider for several weeks and unfortunately most bike stores are low in stock or just didn't have want I wanted. Luckily when I visited this place I went through what I was looking for in a bike, mind you I am a super novice rider and they suggested I come back in a few weeks because they were getting deliveries on a weekly basis. Then out of the corner of my eye I caught a glimpse of something which could be a possibility. I asked the store clerk if I could take it for a spin and he said of course. I drove it around the parking lot area but then he suggested I take it even further, which I did. After riding for a little while, I knew this was the one. They made it so easy. Another great thing about this store is the fact the let you finance the bike. It is kind of crazy how expensive they can be but since I was financing it, it made it easier. I was fitted for a helmet and was also able to pick up a few access well. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience and I highly recommend you visit this establishment if you are looking for a new bike for you or the kids. read more

I purchased a brand new 2016 Haro Annex Si Xl from this bike shop back in summer of 2017, very beautiful well riding bike and they took care of me the 2 times I went in for my free tune ups. Haven't bought a bike from them since but every time I go in to get one of my bikes serviced i've had nothing but good experiences, i've also had friends come here and have had positive results! So. 175$ to ship a 1990 trek hybrid which is no longer available. Box shows up beaten up (um, thanks fed ex, you knew there was a bicycle in the box yet your employees decided to treat it like garbage), oh and smart cycles response? Well that's a lot better than other boxes we have seen. box was clearly opened and re taped (two different tapes), the cage peddles and the bolt for the front wheel are missing. Smart cycles response???? Get in touch with fed ex. Smart cycles apparently takes out insurance... ok then? Why don't you contact your CHOSEN shipping company??? Really??? I was desperate to get my nephew a bike ... Not knowing that there was a shortage in the US, I entered the store in April thinking I would walk out with that in one day. They took the time to order it for me and with a little patience on my part we were able to ship it to my nephew in Texas with the bike arriving in plenty of time for his birthday. I must add while there was a line it was quickand once inside all my questions were answered by a staff member. Top service, patience with all my crazy demands and they kept within my budget. read more

Through the years they have helped me in so many ways. Every now and then you meet people who restore your faith in humanity. That is the way I feel about the folks at Smart Cycles, especially Alex and Boris. I walked into their shop for the first time and just hit it off with them. i wanted an old world, steel frame bike. Alex was delighted to help me. He asked me a bunch of questions about my style of riding, where I road; and, then we got around to measuring me for a new bike. I ended up buying one of their proprietary frames: all Campy gruppo. Then, the virus hit. I live in NYC. Alex boxed the bike to protect the beautiful frame. I am now riding a bike that every bike shop person who sees it says...Nice. very nice. I have my bike of a life time and new friends at Smart Cycles. My challenge in the future will be to ride from the E. Norwalk Sta. up to the shop...a four mile climb. I bought a new bike a year ago. I brought it in this Spring/Summer to have the bike tuned up. (The Sale was $80.) Upon dropping it off I explained that the front brakes pads were rubbing. Also , that while riding the bike was making loud noise. I specifically asked them to take the pedal housing apart as I believe something inside was broken. After my bike had been there over a week, I received a call to pick it up. Upon picking it up, my tire was flat. ( don't understand???? If you checked my bike over, how is my tire flat?)Should have been my forewarning. I wasn't able to ride until several weeks later, upon my ride the noise started again. The brakes had been tighter so much that I couldn't complete my ride; I walked home. I called the store several times, there was no answer, I finally left detailed message explaining my situation. I was as leaving for vacation and needed the matter resolved. The owners / managers never returned my call. I took the bike on vacation, had another bike shop look at the bike. Immediately they told me. "There is no way your bike was tuned up" I left the bike they fixed everything. The manager felt bad for me and discounted the tune up. But I had to pay an additional $59.00. For a service I had already paid for. Needless to say the issues were resolved. I strongly recommend you stay aware from this business! They are not professional, customer service is not in their vocabulary. They don't care about the patrons. I wish I had read the reviews before using this local business. In my opinion, they stole my money. Knew they had never done the work and didn't want to deal with me. read more

The absolute worst customer service I have ever experienced!!! I've been to this store a few other times where I've purchased tubes, tires, and an iPhone mount for my bicycle. No real complaints, until this most recent visit. I wait in line with one customer in front of me and one behind me, and all I need is a bolt for my frame. The sales man said that I could go down to my local hardware store for this item and that they could better match this bolt. I asked "don't you carry any bicycle hardware"? His response, "we do but I have other customers". Apparently if your only in there to spend $1, you won't get any service, let alone "good" customer service. A prime example that this business has forgotten what good customer service is all about. It's a shame because I'm in the market for a new MTB. They didn't want my $1 sale, so I certainly won't give them my $3,000 sale. If good customer service is important to you.....this might be a store to avoid. read more

Sold us a used bike that included a "free tune up". We get the bike home, brake pads rubbing and seat crooked. Returned twice , no satisfaction and to add the poor tune up the lady at front has mastered the eye roll that ensures we never return. While REI cost more you don't get the attitude. read more

RIP OFF. Unless you have cash to burn, don't go here. I had a simple tune-up and they replaced a $5 brake cable --- $ 102!!! For 1/2 hr of work !! $200/hr for a bike mechanic!! Really! Forget this place and try somewhere more reasonable. read more

Probably the best experience I've had with a bike shop ever... I bought an electric bike through these guys, and I have to say they really went above and beyond to help me have a good customer experience. The manufacturer had had some issues with the wiring in this particular model it turns out, so my throttle was acting kind of funky after a couple days riding it. Alex helped me work things out with the manufacturer, obtain a replacement wiring kit, and install it no charge-- since I live in New Haven, he even offered to meet me in Stratford to pick up the bike to bring it to his shop, do the work, and drop it off later that evening for me! Would highly recommend Smart Cycles (they also have a really big, diverse collection of bikes for sale, which you don't usually get, so if you're in the market for a new bike, definitely check these guys out) read more

So, it's not a "rip-off;" and the sales staff are not "weirdly unfriendly;" however Smart Cycles has its own approach and that can be described as: (1) Technical competence - they will have a good reason to replace a Kmart part with a part that will do the job. Some folks don't understand the huge variation of quality in cycling. Unlike autos, where a Hyundai part is not interchangeable with a Rolls-Royce part, many bike parts are interchangeable. The cheap ones are usually junk. Oh, and try getting your local shop to refurbish your classic DeRosa and source original parts! (2) Uncompromised ethics - Alex and team will tell you if they don't have the right thing for you, and they'll order what you need if they can get it. If their distributors don't carry what you need, they'll refer you. Their motto is (3) Amazingly non-pushy focus on the customer - the sales staff may seem a bit aloof. They're not used car sales reps; they are riders, and they want you to LOVE your bike. That approach assumes a bit more initiative by the customer; but I get that can be tiring if you're there to be sold. My opinion is based on 15 years of interacting with 5 different shops in Fairfield & Westchester counties. There is no better experience than Smart Cycles. You can spend more or less on a bike - if you want all carbon bling or Kmart prices that's up to you - but I cannot find a shop that offers better VALUE. Two of those 5 shops I've visited are out of business, but Alex is not. Wonder why? Go visit. read more

Riding my 3rd bike from Smart Cycles. 6 of them including my kids. Alex (owner) is very accommodating and I have only had the best experiences getting my various bicycles serviced. There have been basic tune ups and serious repairs over the years, they are always very attentive and patient as I am just a rider, not a mechanic. All of my kids were treated great and we have all been successfully matched up with bikes suitable for our size and abilities. I have used this shop a few times as it is very close to where I live. The other times, they seemed to be okay as they basically performed the service I asked for, but this last time I was there, when I came in with a wheel and tire on which I was getting repeated flats the person working there was incredibly rude. He would not listen to what I was saying and it was clear that he was in the middle of some project and just wanted me to leave (I was the only customer and the only person in the store). He just told me to come back in an hour and it would be fixed. When I politely asked him why he would not even take a look at the tire or listen to my description of my recurring issue, he then told me that what takes ordinary people 20 minutes to assess, he can see in less than 10 seconds because he has been working on bikes for so many years. He then became more nasty and told me that he, in fact, did not want my business and that he had already told me to come back in an hour. I told him that he didn't have to worry because I would never be back there. Not quite what you would expect from a person working the counter in a bike shop! This is clearly not a business that I want to patronize. Go anywhere else! read more
