So, you get an oil change and they reset the light but the engine light stays on. You take a chance and continue to drive, however, when you just about get to Oxnard you start to have issues accelerating. You think, "Transmission issue?!" Your heart sinks. Then, as if by fate or magic (or Apple Maps) Pro-Masters appears and an absolute saint of a man named Frank offers to read the engine code for you. It turns out there was a sensor issue with the accelerator and thankfully not the transmission. Frank resets the check engine light, lets us know it's no big deal and that the computer in the car will probably forget that it was having the error in the first place. This works of course and we cannot figure out how to thank Frank for the rescue and peace of mind. Is it a crazy story? No. Is it a relatable one? Yes. I am so grateful to know there are people like Frank out there who run an honest business and are willing to help people even if there's no money to be made on a major repair. If you need vehicle service in the area, this is a good place to start. Thank you again Frank!

He explained the issue was our heater core, and it needed to be replaced. I explained my plan. He said not to worry; he could bypass the heater core, allowing us to drive up to Santa Cruz and back to San Diego safely. I told him he could do the whole replacement, but he said he would prefer the quicker fix so I could get on my way. That means he voluntarily gave up the opportunity to make a couple thousand dollars so I could save money and time, and so my family could enjoy their vacation. His repair worked perfectly, took one hour to complete, and cost me $80. Any businessman who willingly sacrifices money in the best interest of the customer is top-notch, in my book. Wanting a second opinion, I took the car to a Toyota dealership for an inspection. After a full evaluation, the dealership found no leaking struts, no suspension defects, and no abnormalities requiring repair. That discrepancy raises an obvious question: how does a car go from allegedly needing suspension repairs at one shop to having a clean bill of health from a Toyota dealership? The GR86 is not your average commuter car, and its suspension setup is more specialized than what many general repair shops work with daily. In my case, the car is also not driven hard or abused. It's used normally, with no track use, no canyon driving habits, and no aggressive treatment that would reasonably point toward premature suspension wear. It's also worth noting that summer performance tires naturally wear faster than standard all-season tires, and can sometimes show uneven wear patterns due to the factory negative camber built into the suspension geometry. That alone is not necessarily an indicator of a mechanical issue. While I can't say exactly what led to the diagnosis, the experience left me questioning whether there was enough familiarity with this platform to accurately distinguish normal characteristics from actual mechanical issues. I understand that mistakes can happen in any shop.
