The tone and approach gave the impression that assumptions were being made about us rather than focusing on providing a quality customer experience. It super sucked when my husband and I each had significant issues with our cars at practically the same time. We went to CarMax to see what they could offer us for our vehicles, and we also had the additional benefit of looking at all their vehicles on the lot while we waited for them to inspect our cars. On our first visit, we met super friendly Chris, who guided us through the process and made us feel welcome. My engine was dead, so I had to tow my car onto the lot. They still offered me money. Although it wasn't much, it was a start toward my new (used) future vehicle. The paperwork process in transferring my title over to CarMax probably took about 45 minutes. From our appointment until we walked out the door with a check in hand, it was approximately 1 1/2 hours. Carmax inspected my husband's car on our second visit to offer him a deal. Although the deal was lower than some others, Glenn thoroughly explained why the vehicle received that price. He took us through an experience with his own car, which had many of the same issues as our car. He provided a wealth of information and gave us information on buying a car on the lot if we chose. Buying a car on the lot is a no-haggle price, but you will pay more because of registration and taxes, so the price you see is not the price you will pay. Car selling and buying are detailed processes, and CarMax made the selling very easy. I'd like to thank the other professional people we encountered here for making the process from start to finish very easy. While I wouldn't mind selling another car to CarMax in the future, I hope my next car lasts a lot longer this time. read more

I hate car shopping. The sleazy salespeople and the constant hovering is nauseating to me. Having gone through most car dealerships nearby I decided to try Carmax. As I entered the location I was greeted by Abel Lujan. I explained I was there to look and he told me let him know if I saw anything. He applied no pressure and let me go walk the lot. It was so nice and easy to just walk the lot and not feel any pressure. I found a couple I liked and found Abel who helped me test drive them. Since I am built like Donkey Kong I couldn't fit safely in the cars and left feeling defeated but felt good knowing I could return to Carmax and try again. Zero help. Zero customer service skills. We drove down 2x to sell our car. First time there was a dmv hold. We took care of it. Totally understood that was our fault. We live an hour away from carmax and its hard to get a day off together, so I wanted to be entirely sure we would be ok to sell the next time. I called 2x to make sure everything was set. They promised that it was, even to the point that I asked them to send an email so I have it in writing--they did. Clearly, my instincts were correct. We drove down today and they still would not buy my car. When we walked in, manager, Michelle, was talking poorly about another customer, loudly enough that we could hear it. Not a great start. I asked why I was not told that I would not be able to sell it when I called multiple times. She said "I guess the right questions weren't asked." Zero accountability. They all admitted they messed up but would not consider extending the offer. No apologies, just "someone" messed up......Possibly the least helpful people I have ever interacted with. read more

I went to CarMax expecting what could have been a great experience, but unfortunately, I had one of the most unprepared sales associates I've ever dealt with, Allen. From the test drive all the way through the financing process, Allen seemed unfamiliar with nearly every step. I had questions throughout the process, and almost every time, he had to go ask a manager for the answer. At one point, I felt like I was the one telling him what to do and what questions he needed to ask his manager. I was also trying to finance the vehicle through my private lender, but CarMax attempted to have me finance through them first and then refinance with my lender afterward, which made absolutely no sense to me and added unnecessary confusion to the process. What should have been a straightforward car purchase took 4.5 hours. I've purchased vehicles from other dealerships and have typically been in and out in about an hour. Overall, the experience was extremely frustrating and unnecessarily slow. I genuinely feel Allen needed significantly more training before being put on the sales floor. I hope CarMax takes this as an opportunity to improve its training and customer experience. If you're planning to go to CarMax, be prepared to spend a significant amount of time there--especially if your salesperson isn't familiar with the process. read more

Absolute nightmare. I drove an hour down to CarMax to sell my car on two separate occasions and was told there was an issue with the DMV. Upon solving the DMV issue I called CarMax and spoke with John who assured me everything was fine and I could sell my car. I even have an email from him stating as such. When I arrived the rude manager Michelle stated that although John sent an email with false information they could not purchase my car and would under no circumstance not extend my sale offer even though they provided false information. Buying a car is a big decision and thinking that CarMax would be the way to go, unfortunately it was not we bought our vehicle come to find out that we had to make repairs on the vehicle, the process of selling our old vehicle was ridiculous because on there end CarMax was supposed to take care of it he transfer with the dmv. Instead I received a call months later for the police department stating that my old vehicle that was supposed to be transferred to the dmv by CarMax was used to commit a crime and the officer said I was still the registered owner of the vehicle. We had a very disappointing experience with CarMax Oxnard. We found a car we wanted to purchase and contacted CarMax Oxnard to have it transferred to our local CarMax so we could see it in person and take it for a test drive. A few days later, we called to check on the status of the transfer, only to be told that our transfer request had somehow been deleted or canceled in their system. Because of their mistake, the vehicle was now scheduled to be transferred to another location for a different customer who had made a request after we did. The most frustrating part is that when we called and learned about the error, the car was still sitting on the CarMax Oxnard lot. They had the opportunity to correct their mistake and honor our original request, but instead they chose to send the vehicle to the later customer. We purchased our first vehicle through CarMax and were planning to be repeat customers. Instead, this experience showed us that CarMax was unwilling to take responsibility for its own error or make things right for a loyal customer. That is unacceptable customer service. I drove the vehicle to try it out before my son came home from school to pick it up. Thankfully I did that! It had a blown engine, leaking fluids all over. It could have been a nightmare for my son had he driven it the 600 miles back to school. They did not have a comparable car and were unbending about reducing their prices to get me into something I could exchange it for. I lost time off work, the plane ticket for my son to come home, my son missed work and the amount of time I sat around waiting. The manager should be embarrassed to say he manages this place. Reserved a 2019 White GMC Duramax Denali to view today. Drove 3 hours to see it and while on the test drive the check engine light comes on. Brought a scanner and the NOX sensor was causing a fault. Once going inside, saw that the report on the truck showed it failed emissions, then passed a few days later: 1 month ago. Clearly why it is now with Carmax. Tried to ask about vehicle history and if there were any check engine lights but it is impossible to talk to anyone who works at this location. A cautionary tale. Do not purchase a vehicle from Carmax unless you have it completely inspected on your own dime. Although my vehicle had a clean Carfax report, the car had many issues. About two months in -having only put 800 miles on the vehicle, the driver side panel and front panel of the vehicle began to turn a pale yellow. A few days later, the clear coat and paint began to peel off exposing the metal. During this time I had a knee replacement and didn't drive the vehicle for over a month. I immediately took the vehicle back to the Oxnard facility. The service department was as surprised as I was and took several pictures of the paint issue. I received two estimates: $3900 and $2800. I asked CarMax Corporate to meet me in the middle and compensate me $1500 to have the two panels properly painted white. Although four months had passed, I still had only put about 2000 miles on the vehicle. Carmax showed no grace and gave me a hard "No!" I guess the true horror of my experience with Carmax happened yesterday when my radiator nearly blew while driving up the Conejo grade. 2020 MBZ GLA250 purchased with 45,700 miles: vehicle currently has 48,500 miles. For such a large corporation, I am disappointed and disgusted in the way they chose to resolve the issue. read more

This particular situation I contacted one of the Sales Managers Cat, which she took care of us since we walked in there going above and beyond even when they where slammed. Cat directed me towards the service center where I worked with Yesica, Yesica took care of us like we where more than customers, she over communicated which is so rare to see in this industry. From minute one Yesica was kind, understanding, and beyond polite. Overall beyond happy with buying the car and even with hiccups this dealership has figured out a way to make the customer service above and beyond. My fiancée and I bought a used Honda HR-V from CarMax Oxnard in January 2025. Just six months later, on June 9th, the car suffered a complete brake failure while driving. It caused an accident that led GEICO to declare the car a total loss. Thankfully no one was seriously hurt -- but it could have been much worse. The car was still under CarMax's MaxCare extended warranty at the time. We contacted CarMax immediately, thinking they'd want to help -- or at the very least take the situation seriously. Instead, we were bounced between departments, told to call the insurance company, and eventually told that since the brake failure happened outside their 90-day warranty, it wasn't their concern. We weren't even asking for compensation. All we wanted was help getting into a comparable vehicle without having to put more money down and while keeping our monthly payment around what it was. We were open to a new loan, willing to pay the small remaining balance on the totaled car, and tried every angle to resolve it calmly. CarMax refused to help in any meaningful way. They cited their "no-haggle policy" as the reason they couldn't even adjust the sale price of a replacement vehicle -- even though that would have helped shape the financing structure. They also brushed off the MaxCare warranty coverage completely, and we were told flat-out that there was nothing more their customer relations team could do. We're now left to file formal complaints with the DMV and consumer protection agencies just to feel heard. It's sad that a company that promotes safety, transparency, and warranty protection would be so unwilling to stand behind a vehicle they sold that literally could have killed someone. Would we ever buy from CarMax again? Not a chance. And I'd strongly encourage anyone considering them to think twice -- especially if you care about how you'll be treated when something truly serious goes wrong. read more

Restrooms are clean. Food places are walkable if you are waiting for the repairs. New vehicle pricing is out of reach for normal folks. I bought a 2012 Kia Soul at CarMax Oxnard. When I was at the location the next day to do paperwork and take delivery of the car, the associate doing my paperwork noticed that the key fob did not work. He assured me that CarMax would mail me a new key fob. So I left. After speaking with the service dept the following week. I learned this is not true. Getting a new key fob for my car requires me to again drive 30 miles back to CarMax in Oxnard on a Tuesday to get it programmed while I wait there. I cannot drive 30 miles to the location on a Tuesday as I work on Tuesdays. And apparently there is no other day that they have someone there to program key fobs. I felt since this was CarMax error they should mail me a key fob and reimburse me to get it programmed at a local dealership. I asked and emailed them and apparently they "don't do that". They are not offering another solution. So now I am stuck with a non working key fob to the only key I have for the car. Super disappointed in CarMax lack of interest in making this right for the customer. read more

Will never go back. I purchased a previously owned 2018 Tesla for my son on 07/23/2024 from here. I read the rules for the clean vehicle credit which was a major factor for our decision. Salesman knew it, sales manager knew it. I thought we were complying with everything. After multiple assurances from dealer management that I would receive the credit, we purchased the vehicle. Much to my dismay, they did not enter the VIN number into the database and my tax return was rejected because I claimed the credit. After numerous calls and visits to the dealer we received a slew of wrong, uniformed answers as to why, until they informed me that two junk dealer fees totaling $118, kicked me over the $25,000. I am still flabbergasted. The credit was the primary reason we bought the car. I don't expect them to be tax experts but I would expect a senior sales manager to know the basics of the credit, with sales price being the most basic. After all, the credit should help them with sales of used EVs. Common sense! Now I'm appealing to the IRS without a legal leg to stand on. Hopefully they are more reasonable than Carmax! read more
