Deceptive signage. I hate when the actual price is not in the signage, but hidden in the fine print. This must be illegal. It is such an inconvenience at the cash register to find out it's double the price. The self check-out machines are wonky. It declined my card twice when I tapped my card on the screen and after I used the card slot. I reinserted a third time and finally got an approval without it asking for my pin. I've never had this issue with self-checkout at Ralph's, CVS, Vallarta, or Target. I felt like an idiot even though I am tech savvy. They need a new self check-out machine or system because everyone seems to be having issues at self check-out with these machines and the employee seems overwhelmed. Probably one of worst grocery store visits. I'd rather deal with the chaos at a Trader Joe's for the friendly and helpful chatty employees and signs that have the actual price. Welcome to NoHo S&F... plenty of room and space and wide open isles... I guess the "extra" is in the size of this store, which is super well spread out. They seem to always strive to be stocked within reason, though this location gets shopped SUPER HARD. The Smart & Final Extra of North Hollywood has personable employees both on the sales floor and at checkout. This location also is notorious for it's big displays and endcap which are massive... Snacks for sporting events... Crystal Geyser water at amazing price points (in bulk) and dominating an entire endcap and then some. I came in recently for a few items and they had just about everything in stock and even had really good deals on a lot of frozen goods including my go to plant based brands (like Gardein and Morningstar). It was a little clunky in terms of where products are placed than I remember... A lot of this stuff located on the far back wall rather than next to similar products at most grocers. Unfortunately they only had one bulk/large size ground pepper on the shelf and I needed more of it at a slightly better price, but not too much more than places like The Grocery Outlet (closest in quality and quantity to Smart & Final aside from Costco). Overall Smart & Final Extra NoHo has plenty! Especially compared to the Ralph's in the same shopping center or event the 99 cents only store... Definitely hoping to shop here again more and explore. The checkout lines are really organized and distancing is practice at a high standard and level here. They even have a monitor that calls out as well as displays numbers to let you know when a register is open and prompts you to proceed to that checkout stand... Which is something I have yet to see at any store this year, not even larger chains such as Target or Walmart offer this... The parking is super easy more or less with arrows for each row going one way only... Though you'll have those people who just say whatever and don't follow the lines for some reason when too many people are coming and going... You know the ones... hahaha The best times to shop are definitely the early half of the day... This Smart and Final location is ok. I like the one better out in Granada Hills out by where my mom and pop live. The neighborhood is better than this location. But their store still have a lot of stuff I was looking for. I used to shop here a little when I lived in the Valley. Some of their produce is not fresh sometimes. Check the date on the foods before buying. I bought some spoiled food here once. I wish I could have gotten my money back, but days later, it was too late. Customer Service is not that good here. They always have you standing in a ridiculous long lines, and nobody is around to check out customers. That is why for so many times, I didn't want to shop here. read more

Worst service I've ever had in any grocery market. I came here today to buy 2 bottles of wine. None of the registers were open although I saw plenty of Smart and Final staff walking around. So I went to the self checkout line where there were multiple customers waiting. One female staff member from Smart & Final run up to me and told me you cannot be here you need to inform us that you're buying alcohol. Her attitude was aggressive and reprimentative as if I was doing something wrong. It is not my job to know the rules of Smart and Final... Besides I've been dozens of times buying product for my restaurant including cooking wine and they didn't have this set-up. As a business you MUST inform your customers if you make any changes in this case have a staff member guiding customers to where they should or not go for their purchases. NOT chastise them at the register in front of other customers and the whole store because they're unaware of your changes. When I responded to this female staff member of Smart and Final she continued annoyingly making me feel that I was in the wrong, that I should of known. She then proceeded to take my 2 bottles of wine and out them on top of a self checkout register and walked off saying..I'm not ringing you up.. What?? Was i supposed to just walk out at that point without paying or walk out without my wine??? It was unreal, the attitude of this person and to be able to be a front staff member to such a large company, it blew my mind. Obviously there are no consequences to this type of behavior at Smart and final. As a business owner I would never hire anyone this rude and certainly I would fire immediately a person working for me thar would be this disrespectful to any of my customers. It's got great produce selection, stuff for foodies, vegetarian meat substitutes, and well, I'm not a fancy cook but I can find pretty much anything I need and I don't need to pay Costco fees to get in. I frequent the store regularly, and I had the worst experience with the cashier Erik. As I entered the line behind another guest who proceeded to take her items from her shopping cart, Erik stated his register was closed. That indiviual was vividly angry because she had already began to offload her items on the conveyer belt. Erik then stated to her he would proceed to check her out. Erik then turned to me and stated his register was now closed. Erik then proceeds to put a closed register sign behind that customer. I proceeded to go through another check out register. As I waited in line to be rang up, the female cashier had to step away from the register to locate a barcode to finish out her transaction which took a couple minutes. Erik then proceeds to open his register because a line begun to form. I was appalled by his actions! I stated to Erik, why was I not attended to first which would have been the order in which the line was formed. Erik then stated he was preparing to go on lunch break, he was just trying to help the female cashier who had previoulsly stepped away from the register to locate the barcode as her line grew. Again, I was next in line but yet he proceeded to assist customers that formed in line behind me. I spoke with a a manager who was very apologetic which I appreciated. The manager spoke with Erik immediately as I addressed my concerns. Erik had the biggest grin on his face, smiling from ear to ear with no worries that he had just blatantly disrespected me. Erik's behavior showed a great deal of disrespect, as he exhibited no dignity towards me as a customer. This ordeal caused a great deal of different emotions for me! I am a loyal customer, and I have never experienced such turmoil from any staff personal at any of the Smart & Final locations. I truly hope corporate investigate this claim. The stores surveillance cameras which would have captured the interaction could and should be viewed immediately! Your basic Smart & Final! Pretty clean, plenty of wide aisles, and lots of Costco-esque bulk deals without the membership price. I see it as a combination of a regular supermarket and Costco, kind-of-sort-of. Not everything is well priced, but a lot of things are, and they do have some good quality items. I work at a middle school, and there are plenty of times I've bought Smart & Final products for my students, because you can buy a lot for a little. It's a nice clean location. It's an "Extra!" So it's a little bigger than most others. The biggest issues I have with this location are the inventory deficiency on certain products (regularly) and the fact that they only have one checkout lane open at 9pm, an hour before they close. There was approximately 10-12 people in line. There were other employees there, not sure why they didn't open an extra one to relieve the line. However, for the most part, this Location does have decent customer service. The employees won't come up to you an offer help, but they don't hesitate to help if you ask. read more

I went to this store on 12/27/2021 around 12:30 in the afternoon and it was the coldest temperature I've ever experienced In a retail store in my life.I went with my mother, I asked her if she thought it was cold? she agreed.Next I went to the baking aisle, found some cooking thermometers hanging on the shelf and they read 53 degrees. (I will include pics of the thermometer)I started looking around at the other customers and they also looked like they were freezing. I noticed the employees were dressed like they were heading to snow summit equipped with beanies & gloves.I happened to walk by an A/C blowing vent!! I found the first employee and asked him if it's normally this cold in the store? and he agreed that it was cold and didn't know why.Next I went up front and asked a woman working the check stands the same question and showed her the thermometer.She also agreed it was very cold and didn't know why.Finally I saw a assistant manager and asked the same question,showing the thermometer and she replied "we have to keep the produce safe so yes it's cold"I couldn't believe that the staff didn't care that it was so cold.I will say as I was checking out the heater came on I believe! Good morning! I have been shopping with this location for close to two years. I have tried to give them grace especially during the pandemic. But this is the worst managed store I have ever been to in my life. Not just smart and final, worst store in general. There doesn't seem to be any set manager or superior. When I saw alex there, I knew if I went to him I would somewhat get help. But to start from the beginning, they're never staffed with the correct amount of workers but especially cashiers. They always have two lines open no matter what time of day it is. It can be 8am on a Saturday morning and the store will be filled with customers and with the lines reaching the back of the store. The stockers are young. I get it. I've been there, but they are always flirting with the cashiers. I can literally write names of employees, as I come in almost everyday. I have a business account with you all. I have heard countless conversations that made my experience worse than it is, but due to their age, I never took it to management as it's clear there isn't any. At times, the cashiers don't even acknowledge you until after they finish their convo. There can be a line wrapped around the entire store and it doesn't phase them one bit. Next, you have two older cashiers but The entire encounter is dry and I almost always try to help bag and speed up the situation. Both I believe were promoted during the pandemic because now their name tags are different. But I can say that they are the reason why your lines don't move as quickly as they could. Even if you had two more efficient employees it could be a huge difference. Age isn't a factor in efficiency. I wasn't going to name drop, but Sandra isn't personable. She doesn't speak nor smile and after reading reviews from years ago she seems to be a common denominator. Products.. the stockers are always up front flirting which is why the dairy and meats are always out of everything! Headquarters should really look into their numbers and footage because I'm guaranteeing you there is a shortage somewhere. I had to argue with a gentleman about needing heavy creme and me knowing they had some as alex told me a shipment came in. Finally after 35+ min of arguing, I was given 4 cases of heavy creme. That was brought out from the back. It wasn't in the fridge, as the entire door of heavy cream and half and half was empty. What manager wouldn't want their shelves stocked? So guests can actually purchase it. This goes into why their food expires so fast. Because they keep it in the back and don't follow proper procedures. I've returned countless chicken breasts this past year from them being spoiled. I'll buy them and head to the restaurant to cook in real time. No freezer, no fridge and when I take them out of the packages they are rancid. So spoiled and one or two day within expiration. As well as the heavy creme. You have a woman manager there. With jet black long hair. Latina. You need a new one.. she lacks management / leadership skills and how to properly deal with a packed store. I watched her converse for maybe 20 minutes. I asked her for assistance getting 16oz plastic cups, that haven't been stocked where the average person can get them by the way for over two months. She stopped her conversation and said she would send someone over. After 10 minutes of waiting, and her seeing me standing there trying to get the box myself from the top shelf and being unable to, I politely interrupted their conversation again and asked for help. Again! I shouldn't have to! Their conversation was not about work! It was 100 percent personal and instances like this make me upset that I even have to come shop at this particular smart and final. The only great thing I'm going to say, is that I noticed a huge change. In the recent months, you brought over employees from other locations to assist with this one. When I'm lucky to have them as cashiers, the experience is like night and day. They are amazing and it shows they come from a different location. Fast polite and efficient and they actually like their job. I'll even engage in small talk which makes your day. Go figure! Lastly, I am sad to see Kat or Kit no longer there. She was maybe the best employee you had. Definitely quirky, but she always was on her job and I watched everyone there ostracize her. She would ask the Latina manager for help and the manager and all of the other women employees there were so rude to her. If she would ask for assistance or ask for change it was like she was asking for $100 to take home personally. And she used to deal with their meanness as if this was just a regular day. This is a business. Not a sorority or social club. I already wrote a review to headquarters mid last year. I just felt the need to rewrite something here hoping someone who cares sees this message. read more

I went to this store this afternoon, I'm happy to see that they are making a big effort in keeping all of us safe by implementing the rules, not too many people inside and I was able to freely go around without feeling my space invaded. The store is clean and well supplied, the have enough employees around to answer your questions. At the time of checking out, they have clear directions as how to proceed, they have tapes on the floor telling you where to stop and allow the cashier to see you and call you to come over. I truly appreciate the system. I will go back to purchase more groceries soon. read more

You may think I'm joking, but Smart and Final is the best place to find unusually large sized containers of everyday kitchen / home accessories. We needed a very large jar of Vaseline to help with some sunburn and they had a 64oz jar. Simply amazing. During the same trip I purchased a 5lb bag of gummy bears and 4 gallons of hunts tomato sauce. Prices were significantly cheaper than Costco or Amazon. It's not for everyday shopping (at least for me), but when you need larger sizes, this is the place to go. read more

So..... Smart and Final, who knew? I had never been to the Smart and Final. I have seen them for years and years but actually I thought it was just a place to go and get janitorial supplies. Apparently they are that...and so much more! I went a Saturday morning around 9AM..it was not busy. So much stuff in huge sizes. There was so much super-sized stuff it was ridiculous. Seriously, how many carrots can you stuff into a giant bag to sell? How much ketchup can you put in a can? And by the way, since when does ketchup come in a can?? It was really all quite interesting. The store was clean and neat and orderly. There was a nice cheese section...a nice meat section..... and their produce actually looked pretty good. They sell flowers and they have a good healthy (or un-healthy) selection of liquor there as well. This place would serve someone well if they have a lot of space in their pantry to stock up on stuff if there's ever a natural disaster....or if you really need to buy in bulk. If you have that extra frig or freezer space you can definitely find some value here. I like this place's better than Costco in a lot of ways. I came here to find a bag of chicken wings. What's worse is that I called the S&F Customer Service #800-894-0511 to complain, and the Customer Service at the Customer Service hotline is worse than the Customer Service at the store. I used to think of Smart and Final as the place to go for brooms and buckets. The other day, when I was looking to buy a new mop, I therefore headed for Smart & Final. Well, it turns out that they are not really the go-to place for mops these days. Who knew. They are way more like a very large, spacious, and strikingly clean supermarket. I was very impressed with their produce department. They carried a huge selection of fruits and vegetables. I was not going to buy meat or frozen food. But from the looks of it, they had a huge meat section and a good deal of frozen food as well. Overall, it looked to me as if they have just as large a selection as major, well known supermarkets. But the store was very spacious, the aisles were not jammed with displays of items on special, the way standard supermarkets have started to do things. It was surprisingly pleasant to shop in this store, not having to maneuver the cart around displays in the middle of the aisles. And I really, really appreciated how clean the store was, the floor was shiny, as if it in fact was mopped just prior to my arrival, to stay with the mopping theme. In truth I am not used to get all carried away over shiny floors in supermarkets. I noticed it because it is rare, and very striking. read more
