Although there's a Smart and Final location closer to home- I dub this one as- "My favorite one." When a rotisserie comes in clutch- I definitely bee line for it. They are plump and juicy and always available. This location is more updated compared to the one in National City. Yes, shoppers can get just about the same items at both locations- and I'm such a stickler for store locations in shopping centers that will suit my needs for the task at hand. The cheese selection here, is by far the best. From white aged cheddar, smoked chipotle, dill havarti blocks. I've been making fresh weekly juice batches at home. That range from a mixture of vegetables and fruits. My two main ingredients are cucumbers and pineapples. And 98% of the time- SAF has good deals on cucumbers. Either 3 for 99 cents (being the best deal) or 2 for (?)- I forgot! LOL. I like their spices and their sliced breads! Bathrooms need a code. read more

I come to this store frequently and I have never been treated sooooo rudely by a girl named Frida. I am a Black woman, I consider myself to be very cordial to everyone, but in this climate of racial tension, not everyone is cordial. That would be Frida. She didn't greet me, she really acted like I annoyed her coming into her empty lane. She wasn't busy at all, but clearly didn't want me in her lane. I like smart and final, I always have, but I'll be damn if some little girl that may or may not like Black people get by with that attitude. She knows exactly what she was doing. I will be back, again and again, but I will avoid Frida at all costs, I don't want to match her funky energy. Next time I will ask for a manager right then and there read more

During COVID, this was my go-to place as social distancing was enforced and people were respectful, the line did wrap around the store as it went from a single lane instead of each lane individually. However, lately it seems like nothing is in stock when I come here. Things not even on a steal-deal discount are in stock... necessities like water or juice which would be a grocery staple have gone empty for days/weeks. Unless people are stalking up again, which could be a possibility. Cashiers are always friendly and do their best to get through the lines quickly. Most of the time there is at least 2 cashiers and sometimes 3 when they are busier. The store is clean and gone are the times when Smart & Final has bulk nuts and candy. They lre-package the nuts and candy since COVID. I have a feeling since they removed the containers, pre-packaged is here to stay. The lottery machine works probably 1 out of 5 times i have visited... not sure what the issue has been but during COVID it was always "not working" but stocked. They do over instacart at this location. Will probably still venture here for deals as it is more of a convenience. read more

They kept saying no I walked in the store and where do I see the watermelons the produce department needs to improve their customer service and care. Came at night and it was very tranquil. Workers would ask if I needed help, that was nice because I indeed needed help finding sourdough! Seems like every time I need customer service the employees & even the Manager DOESN'T WANT to help. I just made a call to order a case of folgers instant coffee & asked specifically for either store manager or assistant & I was told they have to go check the shelf, then someone else answered & told me that the call was transferred because the assistant manager didn't have time to handle the call. The the second gentleman told me he couldn't order my request due to the fact he can't order at all. This is not the first time employees told me that they either wouldn't or couldn't help me. Went to this Dmart & Final to buy 1 item because it is near where I live. I shop here quite often. Normally I use the express lane for 10 items or less as the sign says at the register. They have had the express lane at the same register line for quite some time and normally the cashier will let people know it's for 10 items or less and let them know to use one of the other lanes. This day I had 1 item and a man and wife got in the lane ahead of me and other customers who had less then 10 items. The man and wife had 2 full shopping carts with over 30 items in each cart. When I asked the cashier why she allowed to carts in the express lane she didn't reply. I asked here if this was the express lane and she proceeded to tell me about another cashier that had called of because of a death in the family. Why she decided to talk about it I don't know. I told her that wasn't for me to know and that it had nothing to do with her letting 2 full carts in the lane. She then said "well I'm not the express lane". She said someone must have put the sign there. I told her that sign has always been there and it has always been an express lane. I yold her it was unfair to myself and the other 6 customers behind me with less then 10 items. She again said she is not the express lane and that there are other lanes to use. Not only is she rude and unprofessional for saying that to me but she should have told the couple with 2 carts that they needed to use a regular lane not the express. Instead she decided to be sarcastic with me instead. Unprofessional. Will go elsewhere if that's how Smart & Final staff are going to treat customers at the Chula Vista location store #742. Walmart and Aldi are right near them. Guess it's time to give them more of my business instead of Smart & Final. Total letdown and disappointed with them. read more

Let me start by saying this review is solely ment for the manager that was both disrespectful to me and to her employee. As a manager of multiple different businesses I understand the stresses that one goes through to run a successful business. I get it, but in no way is it acceptable to make your guests feel like they are stupid when there are clear signs of what was being achieved. And to berate your employee in front of the guest? That's an entirely different low. Point in case, Kate? (slightly shorter pale skin curly hair) my apologies if I didn't get the name right as I wasn't able to get a clear view of it. I was in to purchase some romaine lettuce, saw a sign for a case price, asked a super friendly associate to grab it. All is well up to the point when the manager walks up to him and point blank says "you can't sell the case, put it back. There's a limit of 6 pieces that a guest can buy" while I'm standing there she stops the confused look between me and the employee and talks to him about the schedule. I noted the 2 signs posted by the romaine lettuce and the "buy in bulk" section. The manager tells me that oh, they are just not doing their job right. (no where in view states the current limits on this item) ((in fact, I have a receipt from another smart and final from about 15 minutes prior stating that I was able to buy more than her "limit")) Take some responsibility Kate. This is your team, this is your store. I've never been so upset at a fellow manager on how they treat guests and their employees. I'm not looking for any compensation for this review, just hoping this gets out there so another guest doesn't go through the same experience I did. read more

This is probably the best Smart & Final I've shopped in. Also the newest, so there's that. With healthy competition from nearby Aldi, and tons of foot traffic generated by Hobby Lobby, this store is doing really well. I like the new, improved layout, compared to say, the National City store, and especially the Lemon Grove store which was awful, and is now closed. If you need a large quantity of something, and don't want to suffer through a Costco visit, this is the place to shop. No, they don't sell tires, but they seem to sell just about everything else. The prices are good, in general. You can get assistance if needed from the friendly staff. Parking is easy in the expansive lot. read more

The manager here is so cold and not helpful I purchased some things today and when I got home realized basically a whole bag was missing of my groceries. So I went back explaining what happened and the manager said "okay I'm gonna check the cameras." Came back maybe ten minutes later saying "we got you on camera taking all you're things and once you leave the store we can't do anything about it" no sorry this happened, no we can figure something out yall stole basically fifty dollars from me thanks a lot! I go to this particular location a lot. Yesterday I went and purchased a 10 lb bag of potatoes. Got home started to put the potatoes away and noticed almost all of them were rotten and smelling horrible. I was shocked. Shame on this store for selling rotten ass potatoes. So I called the store, some girl answered the phone but then started giggling with what I thought was a co worker. I kept saying HELLO, but she couldn't hear me cause she was giggling too much. This isn't the Smart & Final I remember going to go with my grandma as a kid. The new Smart & Final's are great. They look more like a Vons crossed with a Costco. They have a wide selection of products that would not normally be found in a "warehouse" store. I was pleasantly surprised when I visited the Chula Vista store. The prices are very reasonable. The store is extremely clean. The visuals are good making it easy to find what you are looking for. The employees are accommodating and ask if you need assistance as you shop throughout the store. I wish there was one closer to where a live. read more

I've been to many Smart & Finals in south county and this happens to be my favorite. There's plenty of parking out front and the store is typically clean. The products sold at this store is also well-stocked. I typically come here to stock up on bulk kitchen goods that I know I can't find at Costco down the street. But, this is also convenient when I don't have the patience to deal with the Costco crowd. This store is never really busy when I visit, which is usually between 1-3pm. There are only two complaints that I have about the store in general. First complaint...how come I can never grab a shopping cart in fron of either entrances to the store? It's like they're all in the parking lot and I have to go chase after one. Second is the location. It's sometimes a pain getting into/out of the shopping complex, since it sits on busy East H Street. If you're fighting commuter traffic, it sucks. But, the fact that the prices are pretty reasonable and it's conveniently on my way home from work makes it the ideal stop to shop. read more

This location was much needed down here. Perfect place to pickup valued items when you're not in the mood to go to Super Wal-Mart or don't want to purchase things in bulk at CostCo or Sam's Club. This was my 7th store searching for sauerkraut and sour cream. This store was organized and pretty well stocked. They had limits on most hot ticket items. It was a super nice and clean store. Everyone was super nice. I was able to get what I needed and a couple things I got in preparation for later. As we are pretty well stocked, I just pick up the necessary items to get through the week. Still no eggs at this location. I did hear two employees trying to find out when they were going to get them in. read more

I've been shopping at this store constantly every time and I'm not happy with the poor customer service I get. Lines are extremely long and just one cashier. I recall seeing a black shirt employee I believe her name was Ally walking around and didn't even bother to open another register. The waiting was horrible. I turned around and saw other employees just standing and talking among them. I put my groceries basket down and walked out. It's always like this when I come to this store. I'm determined to do my groceries at Walmart or Aldi from now-on. I gave this store many opportunities and don't see an improvement. read more

The store has a really nice layout and appears clean. The prices are definitely lower than my local supermarket. My concern is the employees. Several weeks ago, I presented a female cashier a valid coupon from a weekly store circular for Crystal Geyser water. The cashier inspected that coupon like she thought I had a counterfeit coupon-making machine at home. It was ridiculous, but I just waited patiently. Today, I returned a package of beautiful but smelly lamb chops, which I had purchased the previous morning. I presented the male cashier the chops and receipt in a clear plastic produce bag. He inspected the package without removing the receipt from the bag. Instead, he conferred with a female cashier working an adjacent register. That chick swung around from her register and approached the male cashier. She glanced at me, then the package. She told the male cashier that they didn't carry that brand of lamb - implying I didn't buy the lamb from that store (!) After her smug declaration, she resumed tending her own check-out line. I pulled the receipt from the bag and showed the male cashier the store name and the first item...lamb chops that matched the price of my return. He apologized. Both cashiers were presumptuous and needlessly reckless, to put it mildly. I simply responded, "That's why we bring the receipt". Duh. I'm certain that my skin color was the cause for the shabby treatment. I will probably shop there again (for specific bargains), but will be prepared for any racial bias from the cashiers. Incidentally, I purposely left my original receipt on the counter with the cashier for further scrutinization. They should have it framed. read more

This is probably this worse experience I ever had so the online service where you order things online and they deliver. I tried it out so mad at myself that I did the Shopper Alandries had no idea what he was doing and every ten mins I keep getting items out of order. I shop there every week and get the same items for the week and all of a sudden they are out of order? Ok so they offered some replacements which were totally not even equally to the item or the price and their recommendations were way more then the item prices are by a lot. I almost feel like they were trying to sell higher priced items rather then the deals. Another thing is they didn't cancel their recommendations they still charged you and gave them to you even if you didn't respond that you wanted them or not. This whole experience was really bad I guess that is what you I get for being sick and still needed to get the groceries. Will never be using this method again! read more
