Came here to grab food for Super Bowl Sunday and I am glad I did. This spot is in West Chula Vista and it is more than just a grocery store. It has a solid hot-and-ready food counter plus fresh pastries, all in one place. Parking: there are plenty of spaces, but if you drive a big SUV or truck, the lanes feel tight, so just take it slow. Inside: clean, bright, and easy to shop. Hot food is right when you walk in (to the right) which makes it perfect for a quick stop. The selection is great. They have rice, beans, pozole, chicken, pork, beef, tamales, fresh fruit, and drinks like aguas frescas. We grabbed shrimp and fish ceviche with chips (fresh and cold, perfect for game day), plus some baked goods and a few things to prep at home. Everything looked fresh and well stocked. Staff were friendly, and the store was kept nice and clean. If you need party food fast or you want a one-stop shop with better prepared food than the usual grocery run, this place is a good move. read more

I'm a fan of Northgate Market's went to the 3rd Ave, Chula Vista, CA location for the first time. I'm making Mexican chicken mole for Christmas Eve and found all the ingredients needed which was great!! I also bought readymade chicken, pork and sweet corn tamales and they were excellent!! I just wished the chicken tamales were a tad bit moist, but they had great flavor and would eat again. If you get a chance to go, try their "Atole De Nuez," in the bakery section, it's a creamy sweet drink with chopped pecans. It's the Mexican version of a pecan pie but in a drink....AMAZING!! This is the most cleanest and well sorted Northgate Market I have seen. Service was impeccable especially at the deli counter, we had trouble with the tamales counter and asked the deli counter to refill the tamales and they handled it perfectly. The guy at the deli counter helped us understand what some things are. I don't normally review supermarkets but this place was very clean like wow. read more

I completely forgot about this place. I normally go to Vons or Carnival. I get there a little after 7AM and the place is spotless and very clean. They have a great seafood and meat department and have fresh tamales as well. It sure has changed since the last time I was here which was years ago. The prices are very reasonable and I would say slightly cheaper than say Carnival. We got fresh shrimp, chilis, vegetables and a few tamales. Everything about this place is very inviting and the cashier was very nice. We will be back for sure. read more

I went to this Northgate for some menudo. I was surprised to not find it at the self serve section. So I asked if there was any. They said it was being served at the juice section so I went and asked for some. What I got was canned Menudito!! I buy it frequently and I know what it taste like. They throw in some tendon to throw you off. And they don't put it in the self serve section because they don't want you to see it!! Charged me $15 dollars for this crap!! Some nerve!! read more

The taquitos and the tamales we got that were made fresh were awesome. The fresh guacamole was flavorful and all the hot sauce/salsa looked amazing. I got a medium red and the deep flavor of red pepper was amazing. There is an amazing array of fresh vegetables and fruit. So many good things to choose from here! read more

Although I like this place today I experienced a little racism from them. As we order food from the hot section we went to the register to be rung up and a short older lady with glasses and dark, possibly black hair came over and told us that the register was close then no more than a couple minutes later she proceeded to ring up to Hispanic women and I found that very rude and racist this store definitely needs to work on some customer service read more

I'm usually drug here by my wife. As you can tell by my statement, it's not my favorite supermarket. The reason for that remark is probably because of the lack of English spoken at this place. And the LOUD annoying Mexican music blaring throughout the supermarket. I'm Puerto Rican and my wife is Mexican, so we enjoy Latin music. Sometimes there's literally a person singing live. However, a supermarket is not a place to pump it so loud. Maybe turn it down a few decibels. On a good note, I do have to say, there is a nice variety of merchandise, especially Latin items. The prices are fairly cheap, which is a huge plus. The store is clean and there's nice variety of items to choose from. The staff are friendly and helpful, though sometimes you need to know Spanish in order to communicate. And the lines are never really long. It's a cool place over all. read more

There's a variety of food here, from an active, well stocked bakery to a hot deli that seems to always have a line. Please forgive me... Once upon a time, the building used to be a Ralph's back in the 90s, but now it is now González Northgate Market. If you need a variety of fresh groceries, pastries from the panaderia, corn tortillas so beautiful they are still hot on the shelves, and a full selection of raw meats in the carniceria section, then this is the place to go! What makes browsing fun is that they don't waste anything at the bucher section so that you can find many "unique" animal parts that you can't find at your local Vons, Ralphs or Albertsons [i.e. when was the last time you saw cow lips? :)] The deli area that has a wide selection of foods ready to go including: carnitas, chicken, full slabs of ribs, and even empanadas! Just make sure you take a number, wait your turn and pay attention to the numbers being called out in Spanish. read more

Hot tortillas are bomb in the morning :) I love going here to get the ready made stuff. Chile rellenos were so good when we got one from there. I love the ceviche and aguachiles too. Don't forget to grab a bag of their freshly made corn tortilla chips. The shredded chicken served in the hot deli is extraordinary. Extra flavorful, appetizing, as well as tender. It's only $5.99 per pound. Additionally, you can purchase a combination plate that comes with rice & beans. The freshly made tortillas are marvelous !!! A must have. Went here to get cases of Crystal Geiser water bottles. It is four cases for $10.00. It came to a total of $12.85 including crv. This place has a lot of stuff on sale. We come here mostly for the cases of water. This location is much bigger than the one closer to me. The parking lot is also larger. It is easy to get in and out of this parking lot. They sell fresh produce and grocery items at an affordable price. The have a deli and bakery section which is great for those last minute items you need to pick up. At the registers, there were plenty of balloons up above the registers. They even sell Mexican candy, tortillas, and other items. They have plenty of registers open and lines go quickly. Irresponsible or Scam? This store charged my credit card for $300 in gift certificates I tried to purchase for a Chula Vista Charity. They swore the charge never went through & that they could not accept credit for gift certificates. I got a Visa Bill for $300 for certificates I never got. Ok honest mistake? I called dozens of times their message usually said no one available. Finally left message for manager but no call after weeks. Tried to contact corporate. No phone number just online comments, & that system does not seem to work either! Avoid this store if you can. Lots of honest options with good service like Sprouts & Albertson's close by & some great local family markets to choose from. read more

Mexican market at its biggest and best. I don't think we have anything so big and tailored to the Mexican community like this at home (in D.C.), so it was so mesmerizing to walk this enormous place, and it's clean! Decent prices and a huge variety of everything in not just meats but cheeses, pan, etc. I found tons of food and snacks I had never seen or heard of. I also found Beef Lips, anyone? Yes I said it, they sell BEEF LIPS. I can't say it looked like the most appetizing thing, with some hairy tendrils (I didn't know beef lips had tendrils), but it certainly dropped my jaws for several minutes, this coming from someone that has eaten her fair share of weird. I use to live down the block from here. A few years ago I use to walk down to north gate damn near everyday. To get my fruits, veggies, meats and the family meal deals for 3 carnitas special. Not no more haha so I hardly come here now. It's been a long while. But I stopped by today because my daughter wanted to buy flowers. I was across the street at McDonald's and remembered north gate had a flower section. So she found some flowers for $11. Overall the store is always kept clean, the employees are super friendly and helpful. I like this store but it is way out of my way to come here all the time.
