My company orders monthly for birthday celebrations within the office. The cupcakes come in a variety of flavors, though I find very sweet for my preference. Love how they are packaged as they are nestled safely for transporting. Overall, a solid choice of cupcakes is your thing. I can't speak to ambiance as I've never been in the location.

Super disappointed!! I spoke with Christian over a month in advance about a 21st birthday cake for my son. I explained that I loved the cakes that I have seen with the various different alcohol bottles and the Barbie doll pouring over the toilet. I asked if he could ADD a decorative THC leaf or joint (without losing the original theme) He said yes, no problem. What I got was ridiculous for the price paid $163.05 I would've rated this a one star but the cake flavor was good. I did send an immediate text upon picking up the cake from the nail salon next-door, (no one is available from the bakery on Sundays for pick up so they have the neighbors help do their deliveries- which I found out that day when I texted) explaining my disappointment and I got NO response. To me this is not a bakery that's concerned about customer service - places that are concerned about customer service respond when a customer is not satisfied. Be very careful when you order and be very specific and ask them to confirm prior to picking up.

The cupcakes are the bomb! more on that later.......We chose Small Cakes as 1 of 5 bakeries that we were going to feature at our wedding reception. the review is mostly about expectations, and then the product. When you sign up for the tasting, they send you to the bakery in Ahwatukee located a strip mall. The banner hanging up is sun faded and and deteriorated and then you go in for the tasting and it is like a mullet, it is all business in the back of the house where the magic happens, but the front area is non descript, not very clean. but they offered you a small table with two chairs, there were three of us. They didn't have any other chairs. You actually meet with the baker and they bring out the cupcakes a few flavors and options. The baker couldn't give us a lot of information on pricing or something that detailed all of the options avaialble to us for cupcakes and cakes. We were looking more for cupcakes and a 6" cake for the reception. So she calls her boss Jordan (sp) and she was a delight on the phone, very reassuring that they were the company to help us with our needs. Jordan stated that they didn't have an official price list or menu available, but she asked the baker to get a piece of paper by the register. i was able to get a picture of what they did have available for choosing. So we put together our list of items and Jordan was going to put together a quote for us. Fast forward we get the quote for I believe 4 dozen cupcakes and a 6" cake (nothing too fancy). We also got some bids for the cake from other bakers and the price was significantly more with Small cakes. I called to ask some question about the disparity, the owner answers the phone and I asked what the difference was and he said that is our price and we are nto going to match. The whole exchange seemed off. He would text saying we are filling up fast you should order before we get to our capacity. Remember the cake tasting, well there was a $50 fee for this service, although we tasted a lot of cupcakes, we were not offered any drinks, including tap water. The $50.00 was supposed count towards your purchase. This had to be brought up. Again, nothing formal, not even a hand shake, text message detailing out what you ordered or an email, 99% was all verbal with the exception of the receipt. Now for the best part, damn those cupcakes were delicious, moist and light on the inside and just a tad of crunch around the muffin top the icing was not overly sugary where you would want to scoop it off. We had some of the cupcakes stuffed with filling; jams and creams We tried cakes and cupcakes from all over the valley and damn the cupcake offerings at Small Cakes were incredible. We are grateful that Jordan, took control communicating often, asking if she could assist along the way. Jordan was helpful by setting up and delivering the cupcakes herself, felt bad that we were unable to connect in person while she was there, but appreciated her arriving on time and taking some stress away. For me, I like things detailed, like your choices in flavors, options and especially the costs and I would like it spelled out on an quote or contract; Small Cakes doesn't offer this service, so if you are looking for that, this might not be the place, however, if you are looking for some delicious cupcakes with some fantastic flavors than Small Cakes is the place for you. 10/6/24 - very small shop, good cupcakes, freezer with small batch ice cream. We popped in this particular Saturday after eating lunch at a place nearby. The young lady behind the counter was very polite, there was a good selection of cupcakes to choose from, plus we picked up three quarts of the ice cream. I will say, the ice cream was most definitely not worth the money. The passionfruit was powdery. I don't know how or why it would taste that way but after one bite I was willing to toss it; there was no saving it in my mind. I think my sister choked it down just so as not to waste money. The pistachio was the best of the three, but still not worth $10. The mint chip was goopy and gooey, not in a good way. The cupcakes were most definitely the best purchase, but we have a bakery closer to home that's pretty awesome, so unless we're in the Ahwatukee area, we likely would not visit Smallcakes again.

if I can leave a zero stars I would , let me start off with the design of the cake that I wanted vs what I got it was a nice designed cake Don't get me wrong just not what I wanted . I had my husband pick up and saw it in person otherwise I would have not accepted the cake . Now let's get to the actual flavor of the cake it was way to moist as if it was raw . Wayyyy too sweet all of my invited guests told me it was too sweet to even finish I reached out to whom I was texting and now they don't respond to my feedback . Most of the cake was left to throw away . I paid $255 for this cake and would love to speak to the owner . whomever I ordered cake from also did finally reach out and sent some very unprofessional Messages .

Ordered a custom lemon cake for my best friends 30th birthday. I presented a Pinterest photo and man did they deliver. Everyone including My best friend was thrilled upon opening it. Not only did it look great but it tasted even better ! I did ask for no frosting on the top/bottom and although it was still included overall the experienced and the result made it well worth it. I highly recommend this place. Customer service and taste was 10/10

This place is the epitome of a Mom and Pop shop. When we visited, we saw the owner and (we believe) his daughter running the cute little shop. We were looking for a custom cake for an adult family member's birthday. We've never bought a custom cake before (which I'd communicated when I phoned) and didn't know what to tell or ask. We wanted a Godzilla themed cake and in dialogue with the owner, we settled on a "jungle" theme. Having looked at the portfolio of images on their website, I assumed that, for the $125 cake price for a small cake for 6-8 people, there would be some kind of decor made of frosting on top, such as leaves, trees, vines... that kind of thing. There was none of that. The cake -- which was absolutely delicious and the best white cake I've EVER eaten -- was plainly frosted in a green frosting without any other "artistic" embellishment made from cake or frosting materials. The rest of the decor was plastic stuff similar to what you'd get on Amazon or Temu. That was a surprise. We had already agreed that we would supply the Godzilla figurines, but upon arrival (on his birthday) seeing some plastic stuff adorn a small $125 cake, I had to bite my tongue and just get out of there. Our family member (a male) loved it and that's all that mattered. The owner promised to text us photos and never did. He also didn't respond to follow ups. When we cut the cake, another surprise was inside. Not the sprinkles we'd asked for and dialogued about when we ordered the cake. Just white filling that was made with almond extract. The birthday boy is allergic to nuts so... that could've been a major disaster, but thankfully we figured it out when someone else had tasted it first. Again, texted the owner about the mistake inside the cake and never heard back. Overall, impressed with the quality of the cake itself which was brilliantly baked and delicious. Underwhelmed by the manner in which our order was handled and the plastic thingies on top for the price, which were some letters, a plastic "gate" and net and 3 plastic/cloth fern fronds. The rest was supplied by us. At the end of the day, if I'd have known that we could've just bought our own cake at Bashus or Fry's and applied some plastic fern leaves, candy rocks on top and plastic letters for 1/4 of the cost, we'd have gone that way instead. With tax, our cake was $135 and we also spent $30 on Amazon for the Godzilla figurines we supplied.

Wow - I think I agree with a few others on here. If there was a Zero option - I would select it. We try to buy local as much as we possibly can to support our town. I ordered cupcakes for my wife's Birthday to pick up at 3 pm on her birthday. I got to the store (Thursday) at 2:45 pm and nobody was there. The door was locked even though the sign on the door indicated that they did not close until 6 pm. I called the number and a gentleman answered. He stated someone would be there in 10 minutes. 35 minutes later - no one had showed up. I tried to call back and no one would answer the phone and of course - voice mail is full. They did send me a text at 5:34 pm reminding me to pick up my order before they close at 6 pm - interesting. The team also did refund the money to my credit card that night after a few emails. I initially thought this was a scam but after looking on here it seems like a more systemic problem. This certainly does not help support promoting our local businesses. Customers time should be as valuable or more than that of the provider. There are more local owned bakeries - I highly suggest you seek one of those out!

I absolutely love this small bakery in Awatukee. I go there to get cupcakes for my dog's birthday and other events. They are always fresh and very nicely presented.

Drool and IG worthy bakery!! I am from out of town so I went on to Yelp to look for a bakery to make the cake for my friend's baby sprinkle. I decided to buy her a custom cake less than two weeks before the day and was in a bind. Luckily I reached out to Small Cakes and Christian and they were able to make it happen. I sent them pictures of what I wanted and made delivery arrangements over the phone. Very easy process. Christian gave me a heads-up before delivery and it was right on time! When I saw it, I was so happy! I knew the expectant mother was going to be so happy with it! Now even better was that this cake was one of the moistest, decadent, but not too overwhelming chocolate cakes I've ever had in my life. I ordered chocolate cake with whipped cream filling worried that it may be too sweet or rich for us considering we had an Asian palette. Nope, absolutely perfect. It was so good that I wanted more. Usually I will stop at one piece, but it was so easy to eat that I had to save myself from three slices. Thank you again for the wonderful job! I will definitely order again next time I'm in the Phoenix area!

This is my second time ordering custom cupcakes from here and I have to say I have been blown away both times! These are the cutest muppet cupcakes and they taste so good too! The process of ordering these was so easy and he was so kind and went above and beyond to make sure that I was happy with these for my sisters birthday! The shop is nice, clean and quiet as well. Will definitely use them again for future birthdays!

Stopped by here because we were in the area and who doesn't love a great cake, cupcake or ice cream? I brought home some doggie cupcakes for my little girls. I've split one between them every day and if dogs salivate then they love it. For myself I chose to bring home two as it was hard to narrow down to only one. They were closing in 20 minutes and still had a great variety of flavors. I decided to bring home a cookies and cream one and a red velvet one. I allowed myself one a day for 2 days and they were still as fresh as when I bought them! The Red velvet had to be my favorite of the two. While there a gentlemen picked up the cutest cake for his daughter with Mickey Mouse ears! Yummy! Treat this place right because they do it right. The boxes are adorable too!

I have gotten a cake here before (great cake) and I would like to express how unprofessional this place is now to customers when they are unsatisfied. Mind you, I have been sick with COVID, and I had this picked up by the bday girl. When I received a picture of the cake it was not what we discussed. As you can see it's supposed to be 70s, 80s cake. I expressed which the owner said she doesn't recall that I wanted to do a dance floor with a disco ball and lady dancing. Then I received a cake with huge frosted swirls all on top which made the cake awful looking which I was more embarrassed by. I spent $160 on this cake, which you can see doesn't look like $160 worth at all. Now she expressed they don't do fondant, but in my mind it was they don't do fondant all over, how else do they get the little pieces on here? I would of thought she would have done a dance floor or something like I had asked. This was not the cake that WE discussed. I informed this small business, and I kid you not I have a ton of messages going back and forth on how they are trying to flip the script on me. I get it, the place said "oh your friends were happy and we have it on camera." I get that, but doesn't mean I was happy with the cake, and spending that much money on one to look like it's worth only $100. I expressed I will be disputing the charge as it's not what we agreed upon. I am interested in hearing what else they will say on here as I professionally let them know I was unsatisfied. You tell me if this is worth $160 (price per serving as they say). I've posted what my request was. No color at all to this cake. read more

Mmmmm, this kind of pains me to write this because I love supporting businesses in my Ahw community, and I love this place as far as taste... super yummy! However after tonights incident we will be using any other cupcake place Placed an order for 12 minis, picked up at pick up time (a bit after 5:30pm). I was instructed to place them on the floor of my car on the way home. I placed them on the drivers side floor. Drove the 3 miles home, the box was in the same position as it was when we left Smallcakes! Opened the box, and the pictures below are what I had... I emailed smallcakes (at 6:11pm they were closed at this time) informing them of this and that I would like a new order tomorrow. With in 4 minutes I get a call from them... telling me, she baked them, and packaged them, they were fine when they left there, and it was basically my fault that they were like this, and that it was in no way her. I asked her how it would have ended up like this completely flat on the way home‍? Still was my fault. Was informed that the only was to get a new one would be at same full price... Fine! Okay I will take full blame for them I guess, sure, whatever...lets just say it was my fault... that doesn't explain the tops of the cupcakes just pulling right off when I picked them out of the holders(in addition to the other sad looking ones) lessoned learned on my end... look in the box before leaving the establishment‍. Wow what a shitty, passive aggressive reply back (in the pictures)... "I am sorry you weren't able to get the cupcakes home in the condition they left in"? Wow really! And i'll follow up with... I did not see the cupcakes before I left (that I will take responsibility for) AND maybe part of your instructions that you give your customers, should be how to pick up the cupcakes then I mean, there are only so many ways to pick up a cupcake out of a box holder‍ THE TOP SHOULD NOT COME OFF! Just saying, take some responsibility for your shitty order, and do better next time... don't blame the customer for not getting them home right (per your instruction) and then picking up the cupcake wrong read more

First off...Let me say how AMAZING the cupcakes here are! Wow...Sprinkles WHO?? Like seriously they are THAT good....Moist, flavorful (many have a bit of filling in the center) and the frosting isn't overly and sickeningly sweet and grainy like how some of the other "brand" name cup cake houses make. The flavors are creative yet they keep staples such as Red Velvet and Birthday Cake in stock. The shop is tiny yet clean and inviting and also serves some creative ice cream dishes and even Pup-cakes for the doggos! Again the QUALITY of these cupcakes is A++++! I've made 4 visits to purchase such goodies on 4 different occasions...The first time the gentleman who helped me was awesome...Friendly out of the gate and along with my delicious cupcakes, made me want to come back. The subsequent 3 times I have returned the service was still good but the ladies that were manning the desserts low-key had the "I can't be bothered/Please hurry up" attitude...Again it wasn't full on rude, but you could definitely get that they didn't feel like being bothered vibe...It bugged me because I wasn't being indecisive, I didn't have a gaggle of kids putting their hand-prints or nose-prints on the glass...So why the attitude? I dunno maybe I caught both of them on a bad day, who knows? I didn't see the store because these were bought for me as a gift, so I can only review based on taste. Which is really all that should matter in a bakery, right? I don't know if I would have taken the time to write a review If it wasn't for one issue. The chocolate cupcake, with the white squiggle, the one that is posing as a Hostess cupcake didn't have the white filling?!?!? You can. Not. Do that to people! If you imply you are similar to a hostess cupcake put in the white filling!! Otherwise leave off the white squiggle so people know it's a basic chocolate cupcake with basic chocolate fudge frosting. I was so bummed. Anyway. The cake on both the chocolate and the white cupcake was super moist and delicious. I actually preferred the white cake, which never happens to me. The fudge frosting tasted like it came out of a can. Super generic tasting, I doubt they make it in house. I wish I could have tried their other frostings because their cake is good, so with a good frosting it would be a winner! read more

The review is on the taste of the cupcakes alone. I was really excited to try this place out and really wanted to like it. Sadly, the frosting and cupcakes were excruciatingly sweet for me and my boyfriend. Had to scrape off most of the frosting to make it somewhat edible. We couldn't finish the rest of the cupcakes due to that. They were beautifully made and looked incredible on the outside. The service was fine, the taste of the cupcakes were just not there. If there are other options to request a less sweeter option for cupcakes, will be willing to give it another shot and update my review then. read more

I ordered a VEGAN double chocolate cake for my son and his family who were coming to AZ for his birthday. I can't begin to tell you what an amazing, beautiful cake they presented me with and I loved the custom top! You can't tell from the picture but the beadwork and the topper on the cake was all sparkly. I have never tasted a cake so good, even from a fine dining restaurant. Customer service was fantastic! I ordered custom decorated cupcakes for a baby shower and they were absolutely amazing! I gave them complete creative rein to make them however they thought best, I just said, it's a girl baby shower and make them look cute. And boy did they! They were beyond any of my wildest expectation! They were a huge highlight of the baby shower! And not only did they look good, but they were the best tasting cupcakes I've ever had! People were coming up to me at the end asking to take some home to give to their spouses because they were so amazing! Dear Friends, This is my umpteenth cake and Stephanie OVER delivers every time. My wedding cake was Coconut Creme Bliss, my birthday was Devils Food Deluxe and my daughter's Red Velvet Scream cake, my grandson's Chocolate Chip Combo Panda birthday cake , my fun uncle's Lemon Drop Supreme birthday and best girl friend's Gucci Triple Chocolate Ganachr birthday cakes were beyond amazing. Everything about my experience was so stress free and amazing. First off I was so late on ordering a cake for my 7y/o birthday, and had zero hope they would be able to fit me in. I called them on a Thursday for an order that Sunday. They had me come in same day put in my order, which took all of 5 minutes so quick and painless. The finished product was even better then we could've hoped for!!! I will be coming back for every and all of my cupcake and cake needs in the future. read more

I really wasn't that impressed by Smallcakes. We got the birthday cake and the hot fudge cupcakes (mostly because they had nothing else available), and both of the cakes tasted pretty much the same -- which is to say -- boring. The frosting was exactly the same for both, which was also boring. The fudge had a little more flavor added to it, and that was nice, but very subtle if anything. I didn't detect much more than vanilla flavor in the birthday cake cupcake. The biggest issue is that both cakes were stale. Yes, we came a little late in the day, but for a bakery, you should always be serving freshly baked food, or tell your customers that the products have been sitting for a day (or more?) and help them to find something fresher, or offer a discount. I shouldn't eat through crusty cake before getting to the soft cake. That's just not cool, and these cupcakes weren't exactly "cheap." Since both cupcakes tasted pretty "run-of-the-mill" and didn't really offer anything different from what I can get at the grocery store (sorry, but this is true for what I experienced), and the fact that they were stale and a tad expensive, I would pass on Smallcakes and find a treat elsewhere the next time I'm having a sweet tooth episode. :( read more

I ordered some rainbow swirl cupcakes for my daughter's birthday and went to pick them up today. They lost my order (even though we were charged for the cupcakes), but they did eventually decide to make us some different rainbow cupcakes to make up for the ones we weren't getting. The ones we were given looked like something my kids could have done at home. They were sloppily put together and the rainbow on them was completely sagging and the clouds were running off the sides. I wish I had taken pics of these delicious cupcakes--they were beautiful, too! I waited until the last minute to look for a vegan dessert for my daughter. When I googled it, I saw that Smallcakes was right down the street. Not only did they go out of their way to stay open a few minutes later so we could get there...BUT.. they are locally owned and sooo sooo nice. These cupcakes were INCREDIBLE!! This place is amazing and the people are very creative. My dad was in the Navy and they printed an edible logo to put on top. The taste of the cake was so good (chocolate with raspberry filling)!! My only problem was it was so tall that it was very hard to cut. I also wish they would've told me it would need to be refrigerated due to butter cream frosting. We needed to leave it in the car for a couple hours so a large cooler would've been helpful. We will definitely use them again. read more

I'm not a fan. $34 for 6 cupcakes (plus the app automatically defaults to a %15 percent tip? Not cool. It wasn't too cool either when I got home (literally 5 mins. after I picked up the cupcakes and the frosting was melted all over. They were on the counter when I picked them up - not too long after I got the text they were ready. They should have been kept refrigerated until pickup. Since they were a gift, I am completely disappointed. Moreover, I did a taste taste with the $6.00 cupcake (which automatically defaulted to a tip for $1.00 - making it very expensive for 1 cupcake) with hardly any filling compared to a duncan hines one I had made on the weekend - guess one which tasted better?
