Thank you so much to the worker who saved the day and helped saved the birthday!! I came in July after a terrible weekend and desperately needing a vanilla cake for a birthday. There was a family emergency that made it so all plans had to be cancelled and it was already a difficult time due to the emergency. I wanted to get a nice cake from a local bakery to help make up for the cancelled plans, so it can still feel like a birthday. I had tried several other places, but was unsuccessful. I went in to the store (about 10 minutes after closing, which I had no idea until later), explained the situation to the very kind and empathetic worker, and she found a vanilla cake in the back that was exactly perfect. I appreciate that she went above and beyond to try and help, especially because it was after closing and the cake that was provided to me wasn't originally for sale. Thank you so much! read more

Incredibly unsatisfied with my cake. I put this order in about 3 weeks ago, sent pictures with specifics to Jordan, and ordered 12 mini cupcakes on top of that. The cake was INCREDIBLE OVERPRICED! Well over $230 and thats for the smallest size (6 inch). On pickup today, i was so unhappy. It looked like a shein/temu version of what i had hoped for. Cheap decorative toppings. The girl who was working suggested I put it in the front seat so it wont move around too much. Welp! It DID! The top smashed into the box and the top layer started sliding off the bottom layer! I was angry! Because how does this place charge a lot more than your average shop and not have secure & larger boxes to place the cakes in!!!!! Wal mart could have done a better job for 1/6 of the price!!!! The yellow is what i wanted. The pink is the shein/temu version. Will not be ordering here again not recommending! read more

My company orders monthly for birthday celebrations within the office. The cupcakes come in a variety of flavors, though I find very sweet for my preference. Love how they are packaged as they are nestled safely for transporting. Overall, a solid choice of cupcakes is your thing. I can't speak to ambiance as I've never been in the location. read more

This was by far the worst experience I've ever had ordering a custom birthday cake, and I would never recommend this bakery to anyone. I ordered a 6-inch cake for my son's birthday and paid $135.88. The price would have been fine had the quality not been shockingly bad. The cake looked nothing like the photo we agreed on. They used inedible standard printing paper for the image and foam stickers for my son's name. They had run out of proper box bottoms, so they placed the cake in a box lid instead--which was too big, causing the cake to slide and I had to ask for something to cover the it. I was told the cake would serve 20 people, but when I tried to cut it, the most I could get was 16 tiny slices the size of my finger (as shown in the photos). I also do not remember being told this when placing the order, but the owner informed me that my conversation had been recorded. I could not use this cake for my son's birthday party and they refused to keep it or refund me, so we tried to eat it at home. The cake was mostly frosting and fondant with barely any cake, and what little cake there was tasted like old oil --truly unpleasant. The owner did not return my calls, and when he finally did, he said he did not understand why I was disappointed and offered a **$10 credit, supposedly because my son's name was on the side of the cake and it did not say "Happy Birthday." This was completely unacceptable considering I had to purchase a second cake last-minute. This was an extremely disappointing and unprofessional experience. read more

The cupcakes are the bomb! more on that later.......We chose Small Cakes as 1 of 5 bakeries that we were going to feature at our wedding reception. the review is mostly about expectations, and then the product. When you sign up for the tasting, they send you to the bakery in Ahwatukee located a strip mall. The banner hanging up is sun faded and and deteriorated and then you go in for the tasting and it is like a mullet, it is all business in the back of the house where the magic happens, but the front area is non descript, not very clean. but they offered you a small table with two chairs, there were three of us. They didn't have any other chairs. You actually meet with the baker and they bring out the cupcakes a few flavors and options. The baker couldn't give us a lot of information on pricing or something that detailed all of the options avaialble to us for cupcakes and cakes. We were looking more for cupcakes and a 6" cake for the reception. So she calls her boss Jordan (sp) and she was a delight on the phone, very reassuring that they were the company to help us with our needs. Jordan stated that they didn't have an official price list or menu available, but she asked the baker to get a piece of paper by the register. i was able to get a picture of what they did have available for choosing. So we put together our list of items and Jordan was going to put together a quote for us. Fast forward we get the quote for I believe 4 dozen cupcakes and a 6" cake (nothing too fancy). We also got some bids for the cake from other bakers and the price was significantly more with Small cakes. I called to ask some question about the disparity, the owner answers the phone and I asked what the difference was and he said that is our price and we are nto going to match. The whole exchange seemed off. He would text saying we are filling up fast you should order before we get to our capacity. Remember the cake tasting, well there was a $50 fee for this service, although we tasted a lot of cupcakes, we were not offered any drinks, including tap water. The $50.00 was supposed count towards your purchase. This had to be brought up. Again, nothing formal, not even a hand shake, text message detailing out what you ordered or an email, 99% was all verbal with the exception of the receipt. Now for the best part, damn those cupcakes were delicious, moist and light on the inside and just a tad of crunch around the muffin top the icing was not overly sugary where you would want to scoop it off. We had some of the cupcakes stuffed with filling; jams and creams We tried cakes and cupcakes from all over the valley and damn the cupcake offerings at Small Cakes were incredible. We are grateful that Jordan, took control communicating often, asking if she could assist along the way. Jordan was helpful by setting up and delivering the cupcakes herself, felt bad that we were unable to connect in person while she was there, but appreciated her arriving on time and taking some stress away. For me, I like things detailed, like your choices in flavors, options and especially the costs and I would like it spelled out on an quote or contract; Small Cakes doesn't offer this service, so if you are looking for that, this might not be the place, however, if you are looking for some delicious cupcakes with some fantastic flavors than Small Cakes is the place for you. Thanks to Jordan and her crew as they were the difference makers. read more

Super disappointed!! I spoke with Christian over a month in advance about a 21st birthday cake for my son. I explained that I loved the cakes that I have seen with the various different alcohol bottles and the Barbie doll pouring over the toilet. I asked if he could ADD a decorative THC leaf or joint (without losing the original theme) He said yes, no problem. What I got was ridiculous for the price paid $163.05 I would've rated this a one star but the cake flavor was good. I did send an immediate text upon picking up the cake from the nail salon next-door, (no one is available from the bakery on Sundays for pick up so they have the neighbors help do their deliveries- which I found out that day when I texted) explaining my disappointment and I got NO response. To me this is not a bakery that's concerned about customer service - places that are concerned about customer service respond when a customer is not satisfied. Be very careful when you order and be very specific and ask them to confirm prior to picking up. read more

Smallcakes Ahwatukee - This is the cake I picked up for my 21 year old college student. - Cupcakes Near Me - Phoenix, Arizona

10/6/24 - very small shop, good cupcakes, freezer with small batch ice cream. We popped in this particular Saturday after eating lunch at a place nearby. The young lady behind the counter was very polite, there was a good selection of cupcakes to choose from, plus we picked up three quarts of the ice cream. I will say, the ice cream was most definitely not worth the money. The passionfruit was powdery. I don't know how or why it would taste that way but after one bite I was willing to toss it; there was no saving it in my mind. I think my sister choked it down just so as not to waste money. The pistachio was the best of the three, but still not worth $10. The mint chip was goopy and gooey, not in a good way. The cupcakes were most definitely the best purchase, but we have a bakery closer to home that's pretty awesome, so unless we're in the Ahwatukee area, we likely would not visit Smallcakes again. read more

if I can leave a zero stars I would , let me start off with the design of the cake that I wanted vs what I got it was a nice designed cake Don't get me wrong just not what I wanted . I had my husband pick up and saw it in person otherwise I would have not accepted the cake . Now let's get to the actual flavor of the cake it was way to moist as if it was raw . Wayyyy too sweet all of my invited guests told me it was too sweet to even finish I reached out to whom I was texting and now they don't respond to my feedback . Most of the cake was left to throw away . I paid $255 for this cake and would love to speak to the owner . whomever I ordered cake from also did finally reach out and sent some very unprofessional Messages . read more

Ordered a custom lemon cake for my best friends 30th birthday. I presented a Pinterest photo and man did they deliver. Everyone including My best friend was thrilled upon opening it. Not only did it look great but it tasted even better ! I did ask for no frosting on the top/bottom and although it was still included overall the experienced and the result made it well worth it. This place is the epitome of a Mom and Pop shop. When we visited, we saw the owner and (we believe) his daughter running the cute little shop. We were looking for a custom cake for an adult family member's birthday. We've never bought a custom cake before (which I'd communicated when I phoned) and didn't know what to tell or ask. We wanted a Godzilla themed cake and in dialogue with the owner, we settled on a "jungle" theme. Having looked at the portfolio of images on their website, I assumed that, for the $125 cake price for a small cake for 6-8 people, there would be some kind of decor made of frosting on top, such as leaves, trees, vines... that kind of thing. There was none of that. The cake -- which was absolutely delicious and the best white cake I've EVER eaten -- was plainly frosted in a green frosting without any other "artistic" embellishment made from cake or frosting materials. The rest of the decor was plastic stuff similar to what you'd get on Amazon or Temu. That was a surprise. We had already agreed that we would supply the Godzilla figurines, but upon arrival (on his birthday) seeing some plastic stuff adorn a small $125 cake, I had to bite my tongue and just get out of there. Our family member (a male) loved it and that's all that mattered. The owner promised to text us photos and never did. He also didn't respond to follow ups. When we cut the cake, another surprise was inside. Not the sprinkles we'd asked for and dialogued about when we ordered the cake. Just white filling that was made with almond extract. The birthday boy is allergic to nuts so... that could've been a major disaster, but thankfully we figured it out when someone else had tasted it first. Again, texted the owner about the mistake inside the cake and never heard back. Overall, impressed with the quality of the cake itself which was brilliantly baked and delicious. Underwhelmed by the manner in which our order was handled and the plastic thingies on top for the price, which were some letters, a plastic "gate" and net and 3 plastic/cloth fern fronds. The rest was supplied by us. At the end of the day, if I'd have known that we could've just bought our own cake at Bashus or Fry's and applied some plastic fern leaves, candy rocks on top and plastic letters for 1/4 of the cost, we'd have gone that way instead. With tax, our cake was $135 and we also spent $30 on Amazon for the Godzilla figurines we supplied. read more

Drool and IG worthy bakery!! I am from out of town so I went on to Yelp to look for a bakery to make the cake for my friend's baby sprinkle. I decided to buy her a custom cake less than two weeks before the day and was in a bind. Luckily I reached out to Small Cakes and Christian and they were able to make it happen. I sent them pictures of what I wanted and made delivery arrangements over the phone. Very easy process. Christian gave me a heads-up before delivery and it was right on time! When I saw it, I was so happy! I knew the expectant mother was going to be so happy with it! Now even better was that this cake was one of the moistest, decadent, but not too overwhelming chocolate cakes I've ever had in my life. I ordered chocolate cake with whipped cream filling worried that it may be too sweet or rich for us considering we had an Asian palette. Nope, absolutely perfect. It was so good that I wanted more. Usually I will stop at one piece, but it was so easy to eat that I had to save myself from three slices. Thank you again for the wonderful job! I will definitely order again next time I'm in the Phoenix area! read more

Customer service is terrible. I tried for days to reach them to order a birthday cake. By the time they returned my calls it was too late.

If you are a cupcake lover this is the place for you. Not only do they have every taste under the sun but they have vegan cupcakes as well! They are also a premier cake maker (which I have yet to order but on my list!). A must try: their homeade ice cream. I took cupcakes and ice cream to a friends b-day party. Both cupcakes and ice cream were a hit- with my friend saying the ice cream was "to die for". If you need cupcakes or cakes or even ice cream for an event, Smallcakes must be your go-to! Stopped by here because we were in the area and who doesn't love a great cake, cupcake or ice cream? I brought home some doggie cupcakes for my little girls. I've split one between them every day and if dogs salivate then they love it. For myself I chose to bring home two as it was hard to narrow down to only one. They were closing in 20 minutes and still had a great variety of flavors. I decided to bring home a cookies and cream one and a red velvet one. I allowed myself one a day for 2 days and they were still as fresh as when I bought them! The Red velvet had to be my favorite of the two. While there a gentlemen picked up the cutest cake for his daughter with Mickey Mouse ears! Yummy! Treat this place right because they do it right. The boxes are adorable too! read more

Wow - I think I agree with a few others on here. If there was a Zero option - I would select it. We try to buy local as much as we possibly can to support our town. I ordered cupcakes for my wife's Birthday to pick up at 3 pm on her birthday. I got to the store (Thursday) at 2:45 pm and nobody was there. The door was locked even though the sign on the door indicated that they did not close until 6 pm. I called the number and a gentleman answered. He stated someone would be there in 10 minutes. 35 minutes later - no one had showed up. I tried to call back and no one would answer the phone and of course - voice mail is full. They did send me a text at 5:34 pm reminding me to pick up my order before they close at 6 pm - interesting. The team also did refund the money to my credit card that night after a few emails. I initially thought this was a scam but after looking on here it seems like a more systemic problem. This certainly does not help support promoting our local businesses. Customers time should be as valuable or more than that of the provider. There are more local owned bakeries - I highly suggest you seek one of those out! read more

I have searched high and low to find a bakery that I could recommend if I ran into issues of not being able to fulfill orders with my Custom Cake Business and have finally found one! I tried what tasted like a pineapple cupcake with buttercream frosting. It was the BEST cupcake I've had outside of mine!!! There was nothing artificial about this cupcake. It was super moist, rich and flavorful. The frosting was not overly sweet and it paired well with the cupcake. I could really tell it was scratch made by the density of the cake. The size of the cupcake was massive and I found myself wanting to only eat half so I could save the rest. I'd definitely buy cupcakes from here when I don't feel like baking. The minus one star is because I wasn't a fan of the cookies. They were super dry and crunchy. However, it may not have been to the fault of the business, they may have just sat out to long. read more

Overpriced cake with cheap store customer service. . I ordered a pink birthday cake, naked style with flowers on it. I paid $125 dollars for the smallest size cake for my birthday. When I went to pick up my cake I was surprised with a white cake. I told them this cake looks like a mini wedding cake I ordered a pink cake not a white cake. They said sorry! It's not in our notes. They didn't give me any money back. I asked them for a credit and they said no we can't do it. So to make it up they gave me 4 cupcakes ( I asked for it he didn't offer) In addition, when I ordered I asked them if they would do cream filling like whipped cream and christian said yes we can do anything but the filling was regular butter cream. It seems like there was bad communication and he never asked me question to clarify?!?! So I end up paying so much money for a cake I didn't like read more

There is no denying they have a good product. Although it's pricey it is good. My issue is the customer service. I have spent lots of money here on their mini cupcakes for different events this year and both times I was set aback by the rudeness from the owner. Once on his response to their previously honored frequent buyer card. Which he promptly told me they don't honor anymore. Secondly, so other order placed for mini's which is required. You can't walk in and these at whim. I was told the order wasn't placed then upon extensive searching they found the order and told me I had to come back in an hour to pick it up. When I did finally get my order I was told it was my fault for showing up too early. Not once was any responsibility or apology expressed. This is not how you run a business! Stopped by since I was in the area and was greeted by an enthusiastic employee who knew their flavors inside and out. He was patient enough to answer my plethora of questions and made you excited to try their goodies even before you knew what you wanted. As for the cupcakes that day, the selection seemed a little limited. Majority of them were vanilla or chocolate based and then paired with different frosting flavors. However, after taking my first bite, I did not care. The cake alone is delicious - light, fluffy, and airy - and then pair it with the frosting, you feel like a happy child again. If you stop by, I recommend buying a 6 pack - an individual cupcake a little pricey and won't last long before you wonder how you ate it so fast. This location is located in a packed strip mall which makes for cramped parking. So be careful when parking! The inside is extremely small and there's barely room for four people to stand in front of the counter. I went at the end of the day and caught their special of 6 for $20. They didn't have a lot to pick from, which granted end of day totally makes sense, but I was a bit disappointed in the lack of options. Totally my bad though. This location however does seem to cater more to speciality orders as they turn out more cakes from what the owner was telling me. Their cookies are super popular but they only make a limited amount per day and they sell out quickly in the morning. So if you want any chance of trying them or grabbing some, ya gotta come as soon as they open! Out of my six chosen selection I will say the wedding cake cupcake was the best of them all! It was light and fluffy but still very moist. The buttercream frosting wasn't too heavy and it had a slight almond taste to it for me. The least liked cupcake I had was the red velvet. Unfortunately I've had better red velvet elsewhere so I wouldn't recommend this flavor and would say skip it unless you really really really want red velvet and would settle for anything. I'm not trying to be disrespectful but the red velvet was dry and had no flavor for me. The lemon cupcake was tangy and delicious. I didn't eat the chocolate Oreo cupcake in time so I can't say if it was good or not. A couple before me were wanting a cookie ice cream sandwich but since the cookies were sold out (there was no sign posted to advise this) they spent 10 minutes going over their options before being disappointed to learn the cookies were gone. I'd recommend a sign to say what flavors and or options are gone for the day. I've found other small cakes locations have done this and it helps to incentivize customers to come back to try those missing items/flavors. Overall I'd recommend to reach out to the business for your custom cake needs! read more

I've gone here a couple of times but whenever I've gone I never see what they advertise! I personally find the cupcakes fluffy which was good but the frosting wasn't sweet enough for my tasting. I love cupcakes and Smallcakes has some yummy ones! While they have a smaller selection, the cupcakes we've tried have been soft, moist, and tasty. The Hot Fudge Sundae cupcake was fun - a chocolate cake with frosting & nuts and a cherry on top. I'm a pretty plain person (I think simple flavors are the best when desserts are done well) so I liked the Wedding Cake cupcake the most - it's a vanilla almond cake with almond buttercream & candy pearls. Their cupcakes are priced as expected, pretty standard at $3.50 for one, $20 for half dozen and $38 for full dozen. If you order a custom cake, they have several additional flavors of cake to choose from. You can also get ice cream here or a "Smash" which is two scoops of ice cream between a cupcake with fudge or caramel drizzle. I only wish I lived closer so I can frequent here more often. read more

Cannot be more impressed with this bakery. I had my baby shower cake made by them and they absolutely nailed it. The owner Stephanie asked for an inspiration photo and the end result was even better. We went in and tried their wedding cake cupcake and were sold on that flavor. The cake (dare I say it) was even better than the cupcake we tried and that's really saying something! All of my guests loved the design and agreed that the cake was so moist, the buttercream was light and it was perfect. Don't second guess yourself if you're considering using this place for an event.
