I have been here with a table full of people and sat at the bar, each time getting outstanding service. Recently I had afresh grouper sandwich on a soft brioche roll. The combination of the crispy fish on the soft roll with lettuce and tomatoes was perfect. This same vacation I split the perfectly tender fried calamari and scallop p'boy with my sister in law. wow ! so bad ! 1st time we visited our food was bland but service was friendly... ordered again tonight : two beer battered chicken tender apps with fries (and just some ranch). they did not properly seal the sauce containers (we just wanted ranch yet they gave us honey mustard and bbq ?!) and once we arrived home, there was sauce coating the inside of one of the boxes (not pictured because it was PHYSICALLY DISGUSTING) also the picture speaks for itself, the "beer battered" chicken looks AND tastes like fried rats ! We were looking for a place to eat that allows dogs. This fit that criteria. The location is nice, right on the water. The service was good. The food was ok. I had a mahi mahi sandwich. It was dry and salty. The french fries were good. For a drink I had a mimosa. They put ice in it which I found strange, especially since it was in the 50's and rather chilly outside. No need for ice. My boyfriend had the scallop po' boy and said it was plain and don't have much taste. Overall I'd come here again but it's nothing to seek out. read more

What a super nice restaurant on Ocracoke Island! The food was absolutely delicious. The ambiance was amazing. I would go back in a heartbeat if it wasn't 7+ hours away! So so so fantastic. Well I was hungry! And the food smelled Great. Slow to get seated. There were quite a few people there but several empty tables. Cheap beer was $3.50. I ordered clams. It took a while to get my order. The clams we're "warm" like they had been sitting for a while. Fries were slightly warmer, buy far from fresh hot fried food that I expect. I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich and it was very good. The French fries however were the best part of the meal. We had hush puppies for starters and they were pretty good, but the butter was lacking. The service was okay. The restaurant was full for the first half of our meal and we didn't get drinks till after 10 minutes of sitting down. However, we had 2 dogs and they immediately took water out for them. The restaurant is on top of the water and you can look at the boats all while eating. There is some cracks in the floors that you could drop your phone into which isn't great. The restaurant is extremely pet friendly. Very beachy ambiance. read more

Liked the food and service. My issue is we got trapped in by restaurant not having a firm 'no mask no entry' rule. A large group of poor choicer ECU people with no masks came in en masse and sat and stood right by our table near the bar. We woofed down our food to get out as fast as possible. It's small and quaint buck packed to the gills even during off season for a reason. The food was fantastic and the mimosas were awesome. We had the fish of the day mahi-mahi, fried oysters and fried shrimp. The portions sizes were great and everything was seasoned and cooked just right. If you want the best sound-side sunset dinner, smax is the place to go. They've got a delicious array of seafood and other sandwiches, burgers, and plates -- something for everyone! The fresh seafood at Smacnally's is Ocracoke's dirty little secret. Is this fine dining? Absolutely not. Is it staffed and run professionally like a 4 star big city slicker restaurant. Of course not; like most Ocracoke restaurants it's a season business, and close the other half. Clean? Sure. But it is located on a dock. In fact the other half of Smac's building is the dockmaster's office and store, catering to visiting boats tying up there, and Ocracoke's little game fishing charter fleet. Do you prefer your restaurants indoors? Ye will not be happy here. Do you prefer your restaurants dogless? Hie ye to another joint. Dogs are absolutely forbidden here by state law of course, but are made totally welcome should they be ones who cannot read the sign. Wanna eat in silence, not befriended by interesting locals and travellers? God help you. But I LIKE all those things. I love eating outside watching the sunset, gulls, and pelicans. I am fascinated with whatever was caught today, and especially watching how the pro's clean their fish. Hell, that Spanish Mackeral I'm watching get filleted may be my lunch tomorrow. Which is why I've been coming to Ocracoke a lot for the past 10 years, and eating at Smac's ever since it opened. The menu is small, because the kitchen is small-boat-sized tiny. So choices have to be limited. The chalkboard at the bar lists what today's seafood specials are. I got a nice Spanish Mackeral grilled with fries for dinner and it was excellent. All I require on it is a little lemon. Perfection. Totally unadorned, totally fresh fish. The chalkboard said "fried oysters" and I got them to make me an oyster Po-Boy. Very small, local oysters fried to crunchy perfection, but like little ocean-juice bursts when I bit into them. In my opinion, there is no better seafood on Ocracoke. Sure, there's plenty of fresh seafood on this little island which has plenty of working watermen to keep all of the eateries supplied. And other places do fish more elegantly, for sure. But I want my fish simple. And Smac's delivers me basic, fresh incredibly good seafood in a outdoor harborside setting that just cain't be beat. Criticisms: the hours they're open vary. You just never know if they are gonna close early or late. Beyond their control of course is the weather, which can shut the place down completely. And if you need to get there early before they run out of the good stuff. But hey, you're on Ocracoke time here. read more

Some of the best food on the island. Their burgers are amazing, flavorful and juicy and generous servings. I enjoyed the grilled scallops skewers which were flavored with Rosemary and other herbs. Portions are generous, service is good. You can't beat the view of Silver Lake. It's not a fast in-and-out place, you do wait for your food to be prepared fresh and tables don't turn over quickly. I'm a non-resident home owner and can't say enough good things about Smacnally's. The food is only sightly better than the view and ambiance... And that's a high praise regardless. We tend to go early in the season and often get a different wait staff. Over the years, we've yet to have someone serve us that isn't top notch, polite and quick. While I have many favorite places to go on the island, this is the one place I tell everyone to visit. read more

My review will be short because I happened in to Smacnally's late on Thursday after last call. Earlier in the day I walked by and it was packed. When I returned it had quieted down some so I walked in. Learned that last call had been made but the bartender was kind enough to offer me a beer, which was all I wanted, while the final guests finished up. The food was absolutely terrific. Wife had blackened Mahi, I had a 1/2lb boiled shrimp and a fried shrimp platter which was great. The ONLY bad thing was the service. Waitress was extremely slow, and waited for over an hour to get it. Food wasn't as hot as it should have been because she forgot about it. Check took about half hour to receive and get card back.
