This is a diner, with diner atmosphere. What that entails is that you can expect a warm greeting with staff who are happy to have you here, along with feel-good comfort food. I got the succotash soup, and the fish and chips. The succotash soup was in a light broth with lots of kale. This really let the sweetness of the squash shine. It's not a hearty soup by any means, but it is super satisfying. I ordered a cup, and at the end of the cup, I wished I had ordered a bowl. The fish and chips... price vs portion size, it's fair.........which means I personally wish I ordered two plates of it. I'll be honest, I have no idea how they pulled this off, but the breading on the fish didn't fall apart, it wasn't greasy, and it was crispy, flavorful, yet, it didn't mask the delicate flavor of a white fish. It's the type of fish and chips that you find yourself eating without slathering tartar sauce all over it. The small portion of cole slaw also left me wanting more of it. There's a slight sweet and tang to it, and the veggies in it are crisp and fresh. Overall, I feel like this is a diner+. Like, this is what a diner becomes when it grows up. Fair prices, friendly staff, unpretentious, clean, welcoming, and most importantly (to me, at least), great food. read more

What can I say? 2023 James Beard Award - first indigenous chef, only the third in RI history, and a woman. Kudos!! We dined on Friday two days after the award was announced. We got there before 5 PM when they opened (no reservations) and the line was 25+ strong. We made the first seating with some folks dining on the overflow picnic tables outside (they seat about 36 inside). Forgot to thoroughly read the website and we were the only ones not with a bottle (BYOB at $5/bottle). So, one of us ran off to Charlestown Wine & Spirits for wine. The downside is that it took 2 hours to get our appetizers and 3 hours to finish our meal (we did not order any desserts). Most people took it in stride but a few diners were verbally "pissed". Why I think this happened. The have a server and a "bus boy" (the latter his first day) - probably enough staff for that. But the cooking was overwhelmed - unfortunately, the award winner Chef Sherry Pocknett is battling breast cancer and the cooking is being handled by her two daughters. So, I assume understaffed. Also, everyone arrived at the same time. The good news. The food is great! The chicken wings, pulled pork on fry bread, "3 Sisters rice", mac and cheese, ribeye, and venison were outstanding. And large portions. One flaw was mashed potatoes came out warm at best. We'll be back - despite a 1-hour drive each way - to try out their breakfast or lunch offerings. Finally, they are trying to do too much. A large menu followed by daily specials plus additions on the chalkboard. And some days doing 3 meals. Was looking for a breakfast spot in the area. After looking for a while we found this Indigenous cuisine spot online. I was surprised by the small building. Here we are, there is about 7-8 tables. We are the first in today. I wanted to try a few thing but decided to do the bacon, cheese and chorizo omelette ($11). I am so happy with my choice. My partner got the 2 egg with choice of meat ($12) and coffee ($3). The portion size was really good. We didn't try the corn bread. However, you have the option if you would like. The services is not the most quick, but they serve you a warm meal that was just prepared for you. Definitely recommend this spot. read more

What I like most about this place is the ambiance. It's a small restaurant, and it feels very quaint. The service was quick to get our orders, check in on us, provide us boxes, etc. The food is good; I got the smoked salmon with Mac and cheese and fries, and my date got the fig pig. I enjoyed the smoked salmon, but I found the mac and cheese to be a little dry. It's BYOB, and there's a liquor store right down the street in case you need to make a quick run. If this wasn't so far from us, we would be back sooner to try a couple of different menu items , but I think we will just have to plan a time to make it back out for breakfast sometime. read more

We ordered catering for a work function and had the three sisters succotash and corn cakes delivered to our workplace. It was the first time that any of us had tried food from Sky Fox Den Two and we were very excited to taste the traditional recipes made by Indigenous Chef Sherry Pocknett. We love exploring new cuisines and always make a point to order from local businesses (instead of getting take out from a chain restaurant) for our team to try. These two items were a big hit and many of us are looking forward to visiting the restaurant in person to try more dishes on the menu. read more

Place is small and quaint but going in the daytime reveals the major lack of cleaning this place needs a GOOD deep cleaning - the ceiling is all black around the vents and the ceiling fans are caked with dark dust. The service does not come with a smile- not one time did anyone smile at us or greet us like they were happy to have us there. The food is no frills. Bison burger was good albeit a bit dry and the cranberry chicken salad was delicious as were the fries and slaw. I probably would not come back especially reading their latest health score indicating the presence of rodents. read more

This was a big disappointment. The fact that Chef Pocknett won a James Beard award is prominently featured on the restaurants website. If this is award winning food, then there's something wrong with the judging criteria, because this food was not good at all. Upon entering the restaurant, we were 'greeted' by a young woman who was behind the counter with a "sit anywhere you want." She couldn't even be bothered to walk over and you know, host. We ordered some food and drinks. The drinks came first and they were terribly sweet but no big deal. We got an appetizer called Fig-N-Pig minis, which are, according to the menu and website, pulled pork with fig and fig-spread on fry bread. We got a tiny dab of pulled pork, no fig anything, on a big slab of fry bread. That was by far the best thing of the meal and it wasn't very good. I got what was allegedly seared venison strips and two sides. The venison wasn't strips, it was tiny dried out chunks of incredibly over-salted meat. Awful. And I've had venison many, many times in my life, and this was the worst I've had. My sides were a joke. The "Three Sisters Rice" was dried out, rice with some crunchy rice because they were so dried out, along with dried out beans and whatever the third sister was. I had two bites which was two bites too many. My wife got smoked salmon and something that I don't even remember. The salmon was ok but again like pretty much everything else, dried out beyond recognition. After our dismal meal, the waitress didn't ask if we would like anything else, like a coffee or dessert. She dropped off the check and that was that. Now, it wasn't even close to closing time, and other guests were sitting down just then, so the unwelcoming attitude seems to be a theme here. A word about that - when your staff are wearing shirts with "You're On Indigenous Land!" printed on them, that's very unwelcoming. We were excited about trying food from a culture that we aren't very familiar with, and in no way does this restaurant make an effort to welcome their guests or inform or educate them about the food being served. This place is a scam in my view. Their website features food that looks NOTHING like the food served, described NOTHING like the food served, and all of it served with no interest in hosting or hospitality. A dismal failure in every sense. The James Beard Foundation should demand their award back, and feel ashamed they gave it out in the first place. read more

I had been wanting to try this very special restaurant ever since they were nominated for a James Beard Award. Since then, Sherry Pocknett, owner and chef, won for best chef in the Northeast! Well I was not disappointed. I came for brunch with colleagues today. We sat outside and all thoroughly enjoyed our food. I had the Sly Fox Benedict which included poached eggs over corn cakes and venison sausage topped with creamy hollandaise sauce and paired with potatoes and onions. I also enjoyed a couple of glasses of their homemade, refreshing sassafras iced tea. Everyone loved their meals. I can't imagine anything better than my meal, so I'll have to work hard to convince myself to try something else on my next visit. I'll start with this: A sense of urgency is a Colonial construct. When you come to an Indigenous restaurant, please don't expect things to be tailored to exacting Colonial standards. Chef Sherry and her team are Native people, serving Indigenous foods. These aren't the out-of-the-freezer, Sysco-delivered, fast food on a plate to which we've all become indoctrinated. They are wild-harvested, lovingly prepared meals meant to nourish body and spirit. As a person with both Native and European heritage, I recognize the balance that Sherry is trying to achieve in order to have a successful restaurant that appeals to settler culture and palate -- while honoring the ancestors and Mother Earth who make this special food possible. When an Indigenous chef and crew with a tiny restaurant receive an award meant to honor and acknowledge their food, it's no surprise all have been overwhelmed. Please visit with open mind and heart and look past your preconceived notions of what a restaurant experience should be. Plan to linger. When you visit a Native home, food follows hours of conversation and connection with each other. What an amazing small gem offering delicious native food. The decor isn't fancy. A series of two and four tops that are reworked to accommodate different size parties. We went as a family of five. My son ordered the waffle and chicken special with local maple syrup. Was tasty and chicken was nice and crispy. The two stars of the meal were the smoked salmon hash and the indigenous plate! The salmon was obviously house smoked and had a deep smoked flavor. They put the crispy salmon skin on the plate, much to my joy and satisfaction. Have visited this restaurant several times for breakfast and lunch. It is small and cozy maybe able to seat about 30+ diners. The vibe for me, has always been laid back, no rushing to turn over tables. I have never experienced or observed rude or impatient staff. The food is excellent! Comfort food at its best! Shrimp and grits, biscuits and gravy, the cape coddah with Pequot Grade A maple syrup to name a few. I love the Fisherman: fried local fish over yellow grits. Love this restaurant! The Mac and cheese as a side was not impressive and $10 for a scoop. We tried the venison and rabbit. A really nice breakfast spot, owned by a Wampanoag chef cooking fusion cuisine. Walking in, you'll see wonderful books detailing the culture and the chef compliments that with a menu comprised of both eggs and bacon along with wild game. The dining room, while small, is very clean. Outside the restaurant are planters growing greens and herbs. If you like corn and fresh produce - you'll be in heaven. The corn cakes feature local produce including chard and squash. While they have home fries, these are better! They also have corn porridge (grits in the south), creamy and buttery. The breakfasts come with traditional American eggs and omelets - ranging from the simple to the creative. Not bad coffee, either! We went for lunch today after many drive bus saying we needed to try. Upon entry the place was mostly empty though got busier during our time. Must have been a busy morning as there was food bits and paper on the floor, nearby on the wall sat a broom and pan ready to use. Even though the place was empty and three servers doing nothing no one cleaned the mess during our time there. If fact one of the servers spent most of our visit sitting at the counter. Frankly was expecting it to be a bit more of a quaint place but honestly found it to be cold and plain. For lunch my wife ordered hot dogs and I the Indian taco. Taco came with no cheese or salsa and hot chili pepper was actually sweet It was basically just OK food, fries were the best part of the meal. As mentioned in my recent post, went back again today with a party of four. The food was once again good. In that review, I purposely omitted the need for a heavy cleaning in the dining area, but it was worse this time. The windows do not look like they have ever been cleaned, and I took note of the SAME DEAD FLY on the windowsill from 3 weeks ago. Makes me question the cleanliness of the kitchen. Not an accusation, just a question. Pains me to leave this review, but this requires attention, given the many choices in the area to eat at. read more

I pride myself on being honest with my reviews - even if it goes against the tide. This is such an instance where my experience fell far short of what one might hope for. Indeed, I might even have to say that the emperor has no clothes... To start, let me say that I love the idea of an indigenous restaurant lovingly serving cultural food that has been painstakingly passed down for generations. How wonderful. We ate all that up. And a James Beard Award? How could this place not be magnificent? Sounds like it should have a Michelin star. No reservations - we were prepared to wait for such an amazing experience. So we show up to a small eatery that looks like it is set up in the living room of a house. I'm guessing the family lives here. Cool. It totally fits into the vibe of coming into someone's home. I'll take it. But the decor is rather low budget diner. The tables and chairs could have come from Costco and the kitschy flashing indoor sign with the specials scrawled on it screams images of cheap motels and too much cologne. Well, let's be positive. The bored looking lady looks up and tells us to seat ourselves. Hmm maybe something is amiss in wonderland? We sit down and get menus and wet plates just out of the dishwasher in a pile to pass out. No bread or anything, which is fine. We order before a bored waitress who kinda mentions some dishes are indigenous and some aren't - would be nice to know which are which. We order in a piecemeal fashion. Drinks first (raspberry lemonade is pretty good), then apps (fish tacos, fig-n-pig minis). I'm all about the food. The fig-n-pig minis are delectable. A remarkable combination of two ingredients that I would have never put together on a bed of bread that is delicious. It's served with no more grandeur than a boiled egg - such is the service - but it was great. A must try. This dish helped cast a positive light on the fish tacos, which had some tasty fried fish wrapped in a thin, hard bread which had the consistency of shoe leather. Well, it's indigenous, let's stay positive. If not a delight, it is a history lesson and an experience into another culture. Another wait before we order entrees. There are four of us, I get a striped bass special, others get crab cakes, venison, and shepherd's pie. You get two sides with most entrees. When the food comes out, it is again served diner style - sort of like Legal Seafoods - not truly a composed dish but plop here, then there and there. The good: the crab cakes are delicious. Best thing we ordered. Indigenous style (presumably, as the wait staff have no interest in a smile much less an explanation of the history behind each plate). No sauces but the flavor was excellent. Very cool take on a dish we are all familiar with. The shepherd's pie came and a heaping portion - not quite amazing in taste but not disappointing either. The venison came in a dark sauce and was cooked to well done. It was hard, rubbery, with some decent flavor that you hoped to enjoy as your teeth were getting a work out. Bring's up Anthony Bourdain's "save for well done" comment. If you haven't read his New Yorker article, you're missing out. Finally the fish. Small piece of fish. Not bad, not great with some seasoning on it. All in all, underwhelming. A James Beard Award? Shows that even the experts will fall in love with a story and dive down the rabbit hole of confirmation bias. The sides were interesting. The fry bread was excellent. Sorta like airy funnel cakes without the sugar. The corn cakes were crusty, difficult to cut through and an overall disappointment. We took a pass on desserts. So, an interesting meal. Amazing? No. Did we enjoy ourselves? Well, we told ourselves that we did. We wanted to. But not really. Such is the truth of life. You win some and then you lose some. read more

Absolutely phenomenal. My mother & I were having a South County adventure day and this was an incredible lunch choice. We sat outside at an umbrella-covered picnic table. Mom got the Indian Sammich (venison, potatoes, onions, fry bread) and I got the Fisherman- delicately fried fresh fresh fresh cod on top of nausamp (grits). The menu says that they're plain grits, but they were lightly peppered with a sprinkling of scallions on top. I also had a side order of fry bread- because like I was going to leave without trying that. Mom also had the sassafrass iced tea (subtle and delicious). I had the cranberry lemonade- with real cranberries floating on top. 40 minutes is not too far to drive for breakfast, I think, because I would like to go back for the "Bisquits & Gravy" and the Firecracker Shrimp & Nausamp and.... and... and.... do not miss this uniquely Rhode Island treasure. read more

Sly Fox Den Too is a Native-owned restaurant that serves local and seasonal foods. We stopped by today and we're BLOWN AWAY by the flavors, portions and welcoming atmosphere!!! Chef Sherry is a true treasure and an amazingly talented chef. My kids were practically silent the entire meal once their food came other than the repeated "Oh my god! This is so good!" My daughter ordered the Stuffed Blueberry French Toast and couldn't stopped telling us how amazing it was. She's a very picky eater and hates frosting and sweet things but couldn't get enough of the cream cheese and blueberry stuffing. My 9 year old said they were the best pancakes he's ever had and added that they must have a garden out back because his fruit was so fresh! Lol I got the Firecracker Shrimp with Nausamp (a native-style yellow corn grit) SO GOOD!!! The shrimp was cooked perfectly and not too spicy. The creamy nausamp perfectly balanced the seasoning of the shrimp. My mother got an enormous plate of Whole Belly Fried Clams with hand-cut fries and in-house made Cole slaw. She raved the entire time. We even got Cranberry Lemonade and Strawberry Lemonade... all made from scratch in house with fresh local ingredients! We arrived just before 2:00 pm when the restaurant closes to prepare for dinner. They were literally taking down the "open" sign. Fortunately for us they agreed to seat and serve us. The menu specializes in indigenous food as well as other deliciously prepared items and baked goods. I had venison fried with potato and onion served on top of fry bread with sassafras iced tea and my husband had the smoked salmon hash with strawberry lemonade. The servings are very generous and prepared from scratch. Chef Sherry and her nieces and nephews are very welcoming to diners. While we were there two very large jugs of new maple syrup were delivered while still hot from the evaporator! They decant it for sale by the bottle. Entrees are terrible. Only the appetizers were tasty. Waitresses need to attend Charm School where they can learn to smile and introduce themselves to customers instead of just saying, "You ready to order.?" The inside of the restaurant is freezing. But, if you head outside in the evening for their outdoor dining, beware. They do not supply citronella candles or torches so you will be eaten alive by mosquitos. read more

She sent it back and it took another 15 minutes. We were hoping for a delicious meal, however, we were served minimally acceptable food. While staying in RI over New Year's weekend, we enjoyed a delicious breakfast at Sly Fox Den Too. This small, cozy cafe did not disappoint! I had the eggs Benedict which rivaled my ultimate favorite dish from a now-closed Vermont restaurant. Two perfectly poached eggs over thick-sliced ham on toasted English muffins covered in a generous amount of delicious, buttery hollandaise sauce served with breakfast potatoes. I ended up getting half of it boxed to enjoy later in the day (win-win!). Hubby enjoyed the bluefin hash also served with poached eggs and potatoes which was one of two specials offered. This was his first time trying a fish hash and he said that it was very good. I would have liked to try the corn cakes so we will have to come back when we are in the area again.
