Such a great pub. The Mac and cheese menu was fantastic. We finally met up with a couple of locals we'd only known through socials and luckily they brought us here. If there was a place like this in San Diego I'd be there every week.

Legendary mac & cheese with bacon & gruyere
    Briony C.

I've eaten at Sloans quite a few times, and I've only tried the mac. My Friday night visit was much the same! We had a booking for 5pm in the main bar area and the staff were really helpful at getting people to move out of our seats. I did consider trying something else but then I only have eyes for Sloans mac, so went for the legendary mac with bacon & gruyere. The bar was absolutely packed, as you'd expect on a Friday night and the staff did a good job with checking on us and delivering drinks so we didn't have to go to the bar. When the meals arrived, there was a problem with one of them so one of our party didn't end up getting her food until we'd finished eating which is always awkward. The mac had a good sprinkling of bacon on top and was a good sized portion with a nice sauce to mac ratio. If I was returning for food, I would definitely try to sit in one of the dining areas rather than the bar as the combination of chatter and music made it really hard to hear the people we were sitting with.

    My favourite- the macaroni!

One of my favourite places to go in the city centre for macaroni cheese and a wee whisky! The atmosphere in this restaurant and bar is always buzzing, with a real mix of regulars and visitors to the city. The menu has a bit of everything but I must admit that I always order the macaroni every time that I visit! A great wee pub too with a good selection of drinks and smiling staff.

    Street Food Sharing Menu
    Ryan W.

The last time I was in Sloans I was dressed as Madonna and consumed more alcohol then is probably advisable. This time around though I came in for the launch of the new Street Food menu. Everything is £9.95 and designed for sharing. There are three types of street fries and two sharing platters. The Cowboy fries are incredible and probably my favourite--fries topped with blue cheese, ribs, BBQ wings and hot sauce and a close second for the Mac Daddy fries topped with mac and cheese, bacon and salsa. They suggest sharing for 2 but there are more than enough for 4+! We also got to try the mediterranean themed Stavros platter with hummus, feta, grilled veggies, falafel and sausage. The platter was really artfully displayed and appealing and the goodies on it did not disappoint. I'm super picky about topped fries and bemoan "cheese fries" that are really just "chips and cheese" so I was over-the-moon that Sloan's Street Fries delivered. They've got a quiz on Thursday nights and I think it would be loads of fun to head back for trivia and some posh munchies!

Ham Hough, Black pudding hash, potatoes and fried eggs!

Nice atmosphere, food could be better though. It's been a while since I've been in Sloans and even longer since I've eaten there. Tucked away off the beaten track it's dependable and even when busy never seems TOO busy. Tonight we ate and, after hearing about the much vaunted Mac Cheese, it was obvious what my partner would order (she's a bit of a Mac Cheese aficionado!). I plumped for the Ham Hough, Black Pudding hash topped with two fried eggs. But before that we shared the Spanish Potato Tortilla with chorizo which was tasty enough, although cold thin (think deli style) slices of chorizo with hot tortilla was odd, a quick fry of some chunky slices would've made the whole thing much more appetising I think. The main courses, as did the starter, arrived promptly. My ham dish was ok, although the fried potato chunks were a little greasy and the flavour of the ham was lost underneath the black pudding. Not a bad combination just not very well put together. The Mac Cheese wasn't anything special either, the sample I tried confirmed my partners take on the dish, not enough cheese! Pasta in a white sauce is NOT Mac Cheese, disappointing :( All in all an underwhelming experience, not helped by the fact the, loud, pub quiz was starting up; why they have the speakers into the back/eating part of the bar switched on, and why the host thought it was a good idea to ask people who were clearly eating a meal if they wanted to join in, is beyond me. I feels a little churlish to only rate Sloans 3 stars. I want it to be more, it feels like the type of pub I'd love to spend time in, relaxed atmosphere, good bar and friendly staff but the food just didn't impress.

After walking around Glasgow city centre in search of somewhere to eat that wasn't Pizza Express, Prezzo, Zizzi, Nando's or Hard Rock Cafe, Gavin L and I stumbled across an old, fairy-lit pub at the end of a small alleyway. Sloan's was exactly what we were looking for - it had bags of character, ample eating and drinking space, good music, low lighting, candles, a decent menu and cheerful staff. We both ordered rib eye steak, chunky chips, tomatoes and peppercorn sauce. Our steaks were cooked to perfection (well, I say 'cooked' but we like our beef rare/blue). For dessert, I had a sticky toffee pudding with ice cream - absolutely delicious. I seriously can't complain about Sloan's. We had a fab evening there and if we ever go back to Glasgow, we will be returning to this brilliant boozer, for sure.

    Pulled pork mac n' cheese
    Jordan T.

First experience of sloans was last night. The mac n' cheese is famous for a reason. By far the best I have ever had and I like to consider myself a mac n' cheese connoisseur. We travel often and tend to never eat the same place twice during our visit just to get a different experience but we Will definitely be attending again tonight. Drinks- are priced reasonable and are amazing. Staff- knowledgeable and very outgoing and polite Time- from the time we ordered till the time we were served was the fastest I've ever experienced for quality food. Don't miss out on the pulled pork mac n'cheese as bizarre as it sounds it was amazing.

Gosh, I love Elf. I'm not kidding. When our group of friends came here to do their Dinner and Movie Night deal to watch Elf I was sold. Not add Mac and Cheese to the mix, and boom. I'm sold. Word of advice, the mac and cheese comes with a random slice of tomato baked into the top. Don't ask me why. I didn't know this the first time I ordered, but the second time because my galpal amigo Carolyn E has my back I was able to order it without and to my surprise, it actually came without it! How pleasantly I was surprised. Unfortunately the salad still comes with tomato, but I shan't hold that against them. The Mac and Cheese comes with a side of fries (which when they're fresh) can be amazing. The staff is always friendly, I love the interior and the buzz that surrounds this place. I love how hidden it is in plain sight. I honestly think his is a great place, and it's famous in Glasgow for good reason. If you get the chance, go. I mean it.

    Cinema Tuesday in the Ballroom
    Jason B.

Went along to the Tuesday night Cinema club they do - what a great idea! It's 14 quid for two people and you get your film and a main course each for that. The menu is pretty basic with macaroni cheese, hot dog or nachos with chilli but given that it's about a tenner for popcorn at Cineworld it's great value for decent food. You sit at wee tables for two people mostly and they have table service until the film starts which is great / usually if I'm meeting someone for drinks before a film I'm kind of watching the clock a bit and wondering when to leave but here you don't have to....you're already in the pub! And it's the cinema too! So now I have to deliver the bad news. After all the good things ive said, I've got to be honest and say the cinema part was a BIG letdown. The problem was simple - the sound was terrible. As in terrible, mu It was Withnail and I that was on and fortunately I've seen it so many times I could follow most of the dialogue but my friend really struggled to make out pretty much the whole movie. If they could sort this bit out id go back in a flash as its a great idea in lovely surroundings (it's in the main Victorian Ballroom on the top floor) but if you can't hear a word of a picture then there's not much point. Unless they just show endless reruns of The Artist?

Nice restaurant with a large choice on the menu, tasty food and nice service. We got italian toasts served with french fries and 2 limonades for £ 20. Nice place to go in city center! Cheers

    Steak pie

Sloans is a proper pub. It's in a huge old building and I'm sure I haven't managed to explore all of it but that's a long term goal. I've eaten here a few times and I've also visited once or twice when they've had the Sloan's market on, which extends into some of their upstairs rooms. The food is traditional pub grub. They're particularly proud of their macaroni cheese which is comfort food at it's best. The Mac of the Month can sometimes have really creative toppings; recently it was goats cheese and caramelised onion, but I've had cajun chicken in the past too. All the macaroni cheese dishes come with a side of fries (because who doesn't love extra carbs) and a small side salad. Recently I finally persuaded myself to order something other than the mac and cheese and went for the steak pie instead. It was good but not amazing. The steak was tender and the gravy was flavoursome but the pastry was slightly overdone and the thicker cut chips slightly underdone. Nothing horrible but just not quite the best either. I'll stick to the mac in future. The market is well worth a visit if you get the chance. All sorts of things are on sale but personally I can never resist home made soaps or vintage costume jewellery. There's usually a bargain or two to be found so don't rush, wander around, enjoy the atmosphere and the beautiful surroundings and who knows what treats you'll find?

As a bar it is decent, seems a bit rough about the edges in a dive bar type of way, but the clientele usually are ok and the atmosphere always seems pleasant enough. It's got a lot going on, In that there is a club down stairs, food is served upstairs and there is also a lot of focus on it just being a pub. I've been a good few times and it's usually mobbed. I think that's partly because there ain't any other decent pubs on queen street (that I can think of) and it means everyone heads here. In other areas it might not be my first destination, but where it is it ranks quite highly amongst the places I would stop for a pint if passing. Sometimes it even has some unusual bottles of craft beer hidden in the fridges which is always a good thing. Could be a three on anther street, but a better option on queen street, so I will go with a positive 4 stars.

I met a couple of friends here and I had fairly high expectations after hearing good reviews. The decor of the restaurant is nice - spacious and interesting art work on the walls. Sadly the rest of the experience didn't live up to these first impressions. The menu itself does offer a wide variety of dishes, catering for both carnivores and vegetarians. They also had a number of specials up on the board. I settled on the Louisiana chicken served with sweet potato mash and thyme gravy. The service was incredibly slow - it took about half an hour for any food to arrive and it transpired that we had been given the wrong dishes so we had another wait on top of that. My dish was very tasty - the chicken was juicy and the sweet potato mash was nice and smooth. However, I did feel the portion size was fairly small for the price. There was also an issue with my friend's dish - she ordered a sweet potato salad that arrived without any sweet potato. All in all I found my experience at Ad Lib fairly disappointing and I won't be rushing back.

The bonus was also that they open at 8am which was perfect for me finishing after nightshift. Got parked no bother right outside (remember free parking on Sundays in the city centre!). Almost cried when we walked in and the waitress said there was no chef yet and she didn't know where he was. Took the brave decision to have a drink and wait on the chef coming (he did fairly soon after thank god!). Roasters are notorious for their freakshakes and being slightly peanut butter daft I just had to! It was so good moreso at 8.15am. It was somehow not too sickly and the peanut taste came over really well without being overpowering. I'd already decided I'd wanted pancakes so decided to go for the mix and match. The raspberry and white chocolate was by far my favourite - such a fab combo! I added banana to the Nutella pancakes which was definitely a good shout. The Oreo creme pancake was a big disappointment. It was so overly sickly with the whipped cream on top that I couldn't even stomach it. The portion sizes were unreal. The pancakes were bigger than my head!! I'm an absolute gannet and always polish my plate clean but I just couldn't. Probably only managed about half before I started feeling like a lie down! I cannot wait to come back and try some of their savoury options - the grilled cheeses look particularly good! Only one gripe is that it was freezing in there but that was probably a good idea considering I started getting sweats from the sugar overload.
