Sliding Rock is not to be missed!! It's a $4 per person charge whether to observe or slide down!! It opens in the Spring through fall. Just be sure to check out their website or call as this is where you will receive their most accurate info regarding openings or closings. I had checked the website prior to heading to Asheville and it said it will open this year on April 30, 2022. However, when we stopped by the Pisgah Visitor center I received some conflicting answers. I'm glad I went with my extinct to just check myself. (They were friendly at the Pisgah center but just saying you'll get more accurate info on the Sliding Rock website.) They have lifeguards on duty and a changing room with bathrooms and cubby holes. However, DON'T leave valuables there. The less you bring with you, the better. Or better yet, leave them in your car or with a friend who's observing. I would recommend wearing aqua shoes as the rocks can get slippery. Seriously, one fall and I can see broken bones, a concussion or death happening. Just be careful. While I didn't slide myself because of the above potentials, it looks like great fun!! I was happy just watching other people go down and it was relaxing just enjoying nature, slightly modified ;-) They have signs listing the nearest hospital in case anything happens and the exact location to tell the dispatcher. The signs also say if you cannot swim you cannot slide. As the 60 foot waterfall kicks you out into an 8 foot deep pool of 55 degree water. The distance to swim to land is not far, but I can imagine the water temperature is enough to give you a bit of a shock to the senses. The signs also say if you have to get rescued, you're cut off and cannot slide again. Fortunately when we went it was the day or day after of opening day and it wasn't crowded. But I can imagine it being a mad house when it gets warmer. There is a hand rail to the left if you're facing the waterfalls from the bottom. At the top of the rail are orange cones where to start scooting on your bottom. If you're going down the falls the path closest to you is the slow place to slide, in the middle a medium paced slide and the far left closer to the lifeguards. They ask you to side scoot on your bottom to where you want to slide because if you're standing, a gush of water can easily knock you off your feet or you can slip on your back and hit your head. NO ONE WANTS THAT. Please. Go out and have some fun!! Just be careful and cautious! Parking is available and a short walk down. There are several steps to negotiate but no ramp. Once you reach the end of the path it's all rocks to negotiate to slide down.

As many times as I have been to North Carolina and driven by Asheville, not once have I been to sliding rock. A visit was planned a couple of years ago, but it rained the whole time we were in the state. Since then I have been trying to get back up here and slide down that rock. My son has been a trooper this trip. Didn't complain at all on our long drive to Asheville and pretended to be a tour guide at the Biltmore. Today was about him having fun. He told me he wanted a place to play in the water. Tubing down around springs in Florida, we were prepared for the cool water temperatures. The out of water temperatures was what we needed to adjust to. It was a warm day and the water felt great while in it. Getting out, my body didn't warm up until I came home and took a warm shower. Maybe a change of clothes was needed. We both had our water shoes which I suggest as you walk over to the slide. My son's Keen's were great and he didn't fall/slip once. We don't need to talk about my non Keen shoes. We walked up to the top of the slide, were given instructions as this was our first visit, and down we went. So. Fun!!!! Three trips down the rock and I could have done that all day. There was a "turtle" side and a "hot tub" side according to my son. He did not enjoy the "hot tub" side because you went too fast and could get turned around on the slide. That didn't stop him from sliding over and over. I was able to get him to walk a little bit around the area and take in the scenery. There we saw small fish and he played where the water rushed over some rocks. The rocks are slippery. Please be careful. I fell, not hard or bad. My wrist will be bruised and swollen for a day or two though.

    A Chilly, Bumpy Ride

It's a bumpy, bruising ride over rocks into a very cold pool of water. If that sounds like fun, then don't miss Sliding Rock. I've been doing it since the early '50s when there were no lifeguards, and some of the restrictions that now exist didn't. But even with those rules and added safeguards, it's fun. And in the summer months, it can get very crowded with pretty lengthy lines waiting a slide. Still, those lines move quickly, partly because some people back out at the last minute. There are a couple of areas to watch the goings-on, and that's fun, too. We especially enjoy the screams when the sliders hit the water at the end. Before and after the summer months, there's no fee charged to slide, and there are no lifeguards. You're on your own, and though the parking area closes, we've seen folks there in December. Now that's a gutsy decision...

Yes, it's literally a massive Rock you slide down and what better way to spend time in the water ? This sliding rock was so much fun! The water is FREEZING! It's a great time in rain or shine. They have life guards at the top of the rock and at the bottom monitoring everyone to make sure this is a safe and fun experience for everyone. It's a perfect place to visit for families and even for a date. It was packed when we went but the line moves so fast to slide down the rock which is great!! A question I get most about this experience is how the rock itself was, and how safe. It's safe but you need to be smart and listen to the life guards because you could very easily get hurt, remember it's a slippery Rock. And certain sections of the rock are more rough than others and I have the marks on my butt to prove it. Make a half a day of it, have a picnic... enjoy the waterfalls within walking distance if this location. There are plenty. There is also a fee to pay to get inside the park!

$4 for unlimited entertainment?! Can't beat it. I recommend getting there right when it opens! We got there 15 minutes after and were able to get a close parking spot and it wasn't too crowded. We left around 11 and about that time it started getting crowded. There is someone at the top of the rock letting you know when it is your turn and there were three lifeguards on the side when we were there. There is a sign letting you know which side of the rock is slower vs faster. The slower side is obviously smoother but it's still a rock so scrapes and bruises come with the territory but nothing too bad. There were people of all ages participating. The restrooms were open and have changing rooms. We brought a bag down to the location; there was no designated space to put it, we just left it on the observers deck. I kept an eye on it but I felt it was safe. I normally don't wear clothes over my swim suits in the water but I did for this and I was glad I did! The water is very cold and the shorts helped protect more of my legs from scrapes. Everyone was dressed differently though so anything will fit right in. A lot of people had water shoes which would be helpful because you have to walk in water to get to the line and there are big rocks to climb over. Depending on what side you go down, the water at the bottom gets up to 8 feet deep.

Visited Sliding Rock Waterfalls with Noel and Tony. We had Sammi with us so we couldn't go into the water. It looked like so much freaking fun. The water seemed to be rather deep when the people went down the slide and landed into the water. It looks like a nice swimming hole, but it was so busy. I bet it was fun before it became so full of tourist and day users. There is a small fee to slide, but it is so nice there. Nice and shaded. There is a large parking lot and that is where you pay the fee. Whether you actually slide or not, you pay the fee. This is off another website to give you more details to share: Sliding Rock is a 60' natural rock slide with a 6-7 foot deep pool at the base - perfect for you folks looking for a waterfall to slide down. The slide is a Forest Service recreation area with lifeguards and staff are on duty from Memorial Day week end through Labor Day. Beginning in May 2014, the fee to access the parking area will increase to $2 per person (from $1 per person). You can also buy a season pass for $25. Parking is somewhat limited, so go early if you can. It will be crowded on a summer week end. I think kids have to be a certain size to slide alone, but can sit on the lap of an adult. There are bathrooms which are open in season. For more info, call the US Forest Service at 828-877-3350. Directions: From the intersection of Hwys 64, 280 and 276 north near Brevard, drive north on Hwy 276 for 7.5 miles and turn left into the parking area and up to the booth where you pay. You'll see a 'US Fee Area' sign before the turn - there's also a sign before the turn if you are coming south on 276 from the Blue Ridge Parkway. I've seen people sliding off season, so I assume you can do it at any time at your own risk. The lines will be a lot shorter, but the water may be a little chillier. The water is cold in the summer also, but it feels great.

    Checking out the line
    Hanna Y.

Should have gone sooner in my life! Yes, the line was long. But it moves fast! Yes, the water was really really cold! And the 8' deep water was maybe 10' deep now. Swim quickly to the exit rock so as not to get squished by the next drop behind you! Kids 6& under ride with an adult. And if you don't swim, you must wear flotation device. You can rent one for 6$ there. Life guards are on duty. But if you Don't want to go down the sliding rock.. there are shallow waters near by to wade in. Fun times to be had by all! A must for family trips and visiting company!

This king of swimming holes, located in the mountains of Transylvania County near Asheville, is a 60 foot natural water slide. Ride down a well-worn slab of rock that has been providing summertime entertainment long before water slides became standard fare. Sliding Rock is a 60 foot natural water slide that ends in a 8 foot deep pool of water. There are 2 observation platforms, and is staffed during the season. This is a heavily used recreation area, come early. Restrooms are open daily Memorial Day - Mid August. Cost is $2 pp or $25 annual pass. It is cash only so don't forget to bring cash there are not many (if any) ATM's or bizzes to stop along the way out here. Also, pro-tip - you don't just look at this rock YOU CAN ACTUALLY SLIDE DOWN IT! We found this spot in a photography book so we didn't realize it was actually highly trafficked and used for swimming. We forgot out swimsuits and had serious fomo. Pack a towel and an old bathing suit (maybe some water shoes) and mark this off your bucket list!

This review is strictly based on aesthetics as we came here in December. It was cold outside and even colder water. Plus it was closed for swimming for the winter. Like I am going to try that cold water. I have heard about this spot for some time and just wanted to check it out. Actually it looks pretty cool and understand why this is such a popular place to come in the summer. I overheard some people that were there and they said that even in the summer, the water is still pretty cold. Really cool place and from what I have seen, it would be a lot of fun.

    Duck 1.

We visited sliding rock in April so of course the water was too cold to go swimming but it was a great place to relax and listen to the water flowing! No one was there so we were all alone! If you come this way you should stop and check this place out.

Hello, I hope that this will be taken seriously, in hopes that this never happens to anyone else…read more Since Helene destroyed our local Canton park we wanted to give the Waynesville Recreation pool. I called the day prior to get all the information I could gather, checked the website since we have not been in over a decade. The receptionist gave me all the information, dates, times, pricing, and and temperature of the pool. I asked if there was still a kiddy pool working with buckets, slides, splash area etc. and I was told yes. The next day we were very excited and happily payed our fee to enter. As we walked passed the 1st life guard posted at the shallow end of the deep pool we smiled and found a spot near the slide as we knew that was what our son was going to be the most excited about. We got our son in his swim vest for safety and goggles and off he went down the slide. All of a sudden I see a young blonde lifeguard running around the Side of the slide saying "NO NO NO!". My husband and I smiled and said "Its ok we are right here and he's safe (Thinking she was worried he was alone since we didn't even see her from where she was sitting)". My son was already coming down the slide when she was yelling at him, (He's autistic and doesn't always understand things or respond to others well). He made it down no problem and was swimming to get out when she said "we do not allow swim vest or life jackets on the slide!" I asked "why?" And she responded with "because of the bolts on the slide they can get hung up and get hurt." I Replied " so there are bolts sticking out on a toddlers waterslide? I think you should be more concerned with that cutting and hurting someone if thats the case, not be concerned with a protective swimming vest." She replied "Well he's to small to ride" I was confused since I called asked and check the website and the slide is on the kiddie pool. I said "ok" as my husband is trying to regulate our son and explain things to him but he just wants to slide. By this point there are only 2 life guards for both pools and my son won't stop trying to slide. I carry him over to her hoping if he hears it from someone else that he's not allowed it will help. It did not! I then am very upset that was the whole reason for coming and anyone with autistic children or any kids understand if you tell them something fun your going to do but then have to tell them they can not its never fun. I ask the girl if I can sign a waiver or anything to allow him to slide, she says"no" I ask can he take of his vest and slide and ill be at the bottom to help catch him if he needs it ( He's a very good swimmer for his age) to which she responded "parents are not allowed to stand at the bottom and help there child". I was blown away buy this since we have been going to canton pool, and Dollywood splash country where kids can wear the life jackets, swim vest, or floats on any slide and parents were always at the bottom to help catch them as well since its all about safety when around water! Well, expect here at Waynesville rec. center. I was upset by this point and asked her what and where are these rules since I was not informed.?" She says "its on the back of the slide". Again I was upset and said " well that a horrible place for rules against a back wall on a slide that not every sees until your back here, also I was not told this and just so you know for the future maybe you all could post your rules on the website and tell them when they call so this doesn't happen to other special needs family and regular families to! I could tell she was uncomfortable so I simply asked what would happen if he did go down the slide (as he can be a runner)? She said " I would ask you to leave" I said "ok" and walked away. So for reference and refresh you can call and check the website where these rules are NOT posted or come in pay inside change enter at the opposite side of the pool area walk always to the back wall behind the side, and on the back said you see this weird outdated slide rules. By this time I was wondering why no one was on the slide and its because you have to be 48 inch tall but not over a certain weight, no parents are allowed on the slide, parents cannot catch kids at the bottom, and no life jackets or vest are allowed. These rules do the opposite of keeping kids in the kiddie pool safe. And again you can go to canton pool, Dollywood splash country or many other water parks or pools and they encourage you to put vests on your child and stay close to your child in water. By this point there are a good amount of ;little kids in the kiddie pool I would say about 10 to 15 and more kids in the bigger pool about 10 as well and only 2 life guards. I'm sorry but I'm not going to rely on a lifeguard to see everything in a pool. But none the less we kept trying to explain it to our son and play in the kiddie pool and enjoy the best we can. Our son was having a melt down and other parents in the pool understood what was happe

This little community center seems to have a lot to offer: - The playground is a lot of fun- both our kids, ages 4 & 7, loved it! A well-kept wooden playground with swings (3 regular & 1 baby swing), a seesaw, a tire swing, and a big plastic sea monster for climbing. - Short paved walking loop with some benches, picnic tables and grill, and 1 of those little exercise stops and a creek flowing by (great for kids to splash around in!) - Large grassy field - Basketball court (half court) - Community garden - Large picnic table area with covered pavilion - Leashed dogs allowed (please pick up after them - there are poop bags along the sidewalk) The community center appears to be closed right now and I haven't checked out the website yet but there's a board with some info by the playground. It seems like they offer yoga classes (Free maybe? Says "donations accepted"), there's an ad for reiki healing, and a whole calendar of events for children and adults. This center definitely seems to run on donations and volunteers. We were happy to contribute to the painted metal donation post by the playground. Peaceful, safe, beautiful park areas like this are hard to find these days. We're passing through, as we're just frequent vacationers to the area, but I hope the community keeps up this little local gem!

She raved about it, and we finally got a chance to check it out. So happy we did! Purchase Knob was generously donated by the McNeil-Gilmore family to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It is 535 acres of land that rises ultimately to 5,086 feet at the knob. In the meadow below the knob, at 4,850 feet, there are two buildings housing offices, a lab, a classroom for fifty students, and housing for up to eight scientists. Views are 180 degrees. You can hit the Cataloochee Divide Trail here, too. A refurbished cabin originally from the 1870s is nearby, which I will get to in a bit. When you get to the park, you will be blocked by a gate with a sign to the left identifying the park. It is open once in a while for scheduled visits/field trip students. It is easy to get your vehicle locked within the park. (People cannot get locked in.) Park your car on the sides of the road. Just walk around the gate if it is locked. Bring water, and a jacket in the spring or fall. The 2.5 mile round trip trail is basically a wide, dirt road that will eventually lead up to the main buildings. It is well maintained. When you get a glimpse of the building at the top, you will also see a grass trail leading upwards. I would take that trail. It is a shortcut. If you like to walk, just keep going, and the road will eventually lead to the building as well. On the way up, you will see many types of wildflowers. We heard (up) and spotted a hawk (down). I got a photo of nightshade, all the while with my body centimeters from a hidden cliff edge. Be careful on grassy edges! The open areas and tree-filled areas were of equal beauty. In early September I saw purples, greens, grays, and yellows, all framed by a clear blue sky graced by fluffy clouds. Your soul will take this in, and it will hold on to it. When we got to the top, we relaxed. We did not go to the knob proper. We used the very clean bathrooms, and laid down in the field right in front of the buildings. There is a water fountain. You are allowed on the deck, but not in the buildings unless you are with a scheduled group. There are picnic tables grouped close together, and bear-proof trashcans and recycling bins. You can check out the outside of the weather station that is a bit away. I would not traipse around the adjacent fields. I saw tagged plants and left that area so that we would not screw up any data. If you decide to go to the actual knob, you have to blaze your own trail. As of two days ago, the footbridge leading to Cataloochee was out. There is a sign warning of that; be careful crossing creeks. Anyway, that trail is easy to find; just look for signs. Check out the bulletin board for lists of the types of birds and butterflies that you can see there. I saw (possibly) a Cloudless skipper. It was fluorescent yellow! My first. To get down to the restored Ferguson cabin, just leave via the "grass carpet" trail. Make an obvious right and hitch your horse, or kids. This right will lead you to the cabin. The Fergusons were the first farmers to have an elevated farm. Their apples are still there. Do not pick anything. Do not get in the boar trap. Do not get near bears. Do not bother the cow spirits. Call to make sure horses are indeed still allowed. Bears and boars can hurt you. We leave all snacks in the car. You never know. Call the general number to see if bear activity is intense before going to this park. Middle school and up teachers, call this number to schedule a visit: 828-926-6251. This park welcomes wimpy and tough hikers mid-March through November. Call if you have a desire to hike in the deep winter. Remember to check out the Purchase Knob WebCam online for weather and views. To get to this park, take Exit 20, stay on 276 South for five miles. Get on Hemphill Road and stay on Hemphill Road for four miles. This review is dedicated to my daughter Sophie, a quick, beautiful trailblazer.

This is my favorite Buncombe County River Park. Even though there are no restroom facilities here,…read morethe beauty and serenity of the location more than make up for it. In addition to the various natural dams and rocks in the River, someone has created a little kiddie pool to keep the little ones from floating downstream to Marshall. The river splits with part of it going down a channel to the right, forming walnut island. That little section of the river is just absolutely gorgeous, and the county maintains an easily traversed path the Full length of the island. It could be the perfect location for a small informal wedding, with the bride coming down the path from around the bend, a natural canopy complete with beautiful gurgling sounds of the river flowing over the rocks. The park is equipped with barbecue grills and picnic tables, although the tables look pretty uncomfortable. I suggest bringing your own canvas or folding chairs & blanket if you're going to be here for a while. There is plenty of gorgeous grass, and the park seems to be pretty well maintained. This morning, I saw two people fly fishing, in their waders, as well as a couple more people fishing from a small boat on the river. Really, an idyllic scene. No one else was in the park for the entire 30 minutes we were there, so if you want a little privacy and a gorgeous spot, Walnut Island River Park is the place to go. At least until it gets discovered by the masses.
