This place is tucked away, off the main drag... and we might have never found it if it weren't for a recommendation from a local shop employee (thank you Salty Wahine) on day one who told us to go there. We went back twice, we loved it so much! Fresh local food, not fancy- paper plates, paper cups of water/picnic tables and BYOB. But that ahi tuna steak I had - I'll be thinking about it for months-- it was nothing short of amazing. I ordered it to the chefs liking (temperature)-it came perfectly seared /medium rare with a sea salt/bucks burgers butter sauce. That was just perfect. Served with rice. ( white or brown) and a side salad with a creamy sesame-ginger dressing that was also so tasty and unique. The first night I had chicken teriyaki that was beautifully done, my boyfriend had the Ono wrap -also fantastic. The fish here is very fresh, caught that day- or brought in every two days according to the chef (depending on how busy they are)...and absolutely the BEST meal we had while we were in Kauai- especially for the price. Amazing and comfort food in Kauai! My husband and I were looking for a place to have lunch as we had just arrived in Kauai and saw a sign for the "Sleeping Giant Grill" and decided to give it a try, and it turned out to be the best decision ever. Both of us had the Wagyu Rib Eye dish and it was great! It is a simple place with paper plates and plastic silverware and with incredible food! The staff was so friendly and their sauces are the cherry on top. I highly recommend this place! read more

Sorry, but I can't give this place much of a rating. All our food was overcooked (both shrimp and chicken dishes were rubbery textured) and the flavors were just okay. I liked the sesame salad dressing best, but that's sad to be searching for something we really liked. They do make generously sized dishes but I prefer quality to quantity every time, so this isn't a place I would return. It isn't fast food, but it does get delivered to your table in a short time. Yelp lead me to another gem. My friends and I stopped by for dinner after a long day of hiking and relaxing at the pool. I got the wrap with ono mochi style. It was delicious. Cool crunchy slaw, hot steamy rice, and perfectly battered fried fish fillets that were cooked to perfection. All wrapped in a soft tortilla. An explosion of flavors and textures in your mouth. This place is byob! So grab a couple beers and try some of this delicious food! Also positives: they have vegan options, plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, and the service is friendly. read more

We thought we knew pretty good fish tacos coming from San Diego...wrong! Best fish tacos we've ever had. We tried ono and ahi- fried and grilled. Tasted so fresh. We've been back multiple times on our trip. We saw a guy pull up in a pickup and unload a huge fresh caught fish. Never seen that before- proof of how fresh it is. Must stop in and try the tacos! We stopped by here for lunch after visiting the farmer's market at Coconut Marketplace. I got the grilled shrimp plate special. Shrimp was so good! Very juicy and spicy. Definitely on the spicier side for those with a sensitive palette, but I enjoy spicy and thought it was perfect. I was not a huge fan if this mac salad because it was leaning more toward traditional potato salad with elbow pasta in it, but if that's your style you will definitely enjoy it. An eclectic menu here. Sort of Mexican, but lots of seafood. Also Korean BBQ chicken and some specials. They also will customize your order to a large degree (e.g. you can get something "mochi style" that wasn't on the menu as mochi style). This one is another example of why I'd like half-stars here on Yelp. We ordered a variety of things, and they were very good. I customized my plate to "mochi style" (ono), but found that unimpressive. In hindsight I probably shouldn't have bothered. I would rate my meal at 3.5 stars. but everyone else seemed to like their selections at the 4-star level. Portion size was reasonable, prices about normal for Kauai. So I'm torn here, but I trust my family and they liked it at 4 stars. read more

If you want some amazing fish tacos, you have to come to Sleeping Giant! We were recommended the ono by the worker and we're happy we listened! Biggest advice: ONLY ORDER THE FRIED! As we were trying to be healthy, we ordered one grilled and one fried for the Ono tacos plate. Man, we were so bummed by how dry the grilled ono was that we even split another taco plate but with two friedddd onos this time! So much for being healthy! Hahaha the tacos come loaded with lettuce, onion, cheese and I can't remember what else but the sauce was def yummm! If you want extra it's 50 cents. It def needs some spiciness to it as well or at least the option for spicy lovers like me! The fish is so fresh and tender though that it makes up for everything! I didn't even know there was something called Nairagi (striped marlin) poke but it was so yummy. Had it for the first time here and it was light but almost more refreshing than the ahi poke! I couldn't decide between the shoyu marinade or the garlic marinade so decided to get a bit of both. The habanero chicken was so BOMB. Coated in mochi it was perfectly fried and crispy around all the edges. The chicken was soft and the habanero sauce had a nice kick and sweet tang to it. Located behind coconuts marketplace, it is a semi hidden location, but worth a stop of you're in the area and need to grab a quick bite with no crowds. This place is conveniently located next to the Aston Islander so my friend and I ate here twice during a recent trip to Kauai. The first time, she tried the mochi style ono wrap and I had the ono poke bowl. The second time I tried the mochi style ono tacos and she tried the chicken teriyaki plate. I tried everything (of course) and would rate as follows: 1. The mochi style ono wrap - I'm not even sure what all they put in this but it was BOMB! 2. The mochi style tacos - the big pieces of ono were fried perfectly but I preferred the fillings of the wrap slightly. Also this is apparently rated like the #15 taco in all of the US? 3. Ono poke bowl - very fresh and well seasoned but there is better poke on Kauai in my opinion 4. Chicken teriyaki plate - not a ton of sauce, a little blah This place might seem super touristy because of its proximity to a bunch of resort hotels but it's actually a great option for a nice casual dinner. And while, again, I wasn't wowed with the fish, it was exceptionally flavorful, which is tough to pull off after the steak has been sitting on the grill. First meal after landing in Kauai, came back here after 4 years. I've been craving their FRESH AHI POKE ON SALAD for so long and it tastes exactly how I remembered. It's one of the best poke and the best salad I've ever had. DO NOT just get the poke bowl (you get two scoops of poke and one scoop of rice which is off ratio and the poke flavor is basic sesame flavor), you have to get the FRESH AHI POKE ON SALAD (or on plate = 1/2 salad 1/2 rice) and mix the poke with some sesame island dressing that comes with the salad to create "creamy sesame ahi poke" which is one of the best poke flavor I've had. The ahi is super fresh melt in your mouth quality, and the sesame island dressing (yellow sauce) adds the right amount of sweetness, creaminess, and nuttiness. If you love adding spice, the wasabi soy sauce (brown sauce) adds hint of spice and savoriness but I find it too salty as the ahi comes already seasoned. The second time I visited they were out of poke so I tried their CAJUN SEARED AHI SASHIMI ON SALAD. Since they have the best salad with the best dressing, whichever protein you add, it will taste good. The cajun seared ahi was also fresh and delicious, however their salad is just absolute the best with fresh ahi poke. If you visit later in the afternoon, they are out of poke so I highly recommend going early before dinner time. read more
