I was excited to rent some surf gear and drove over an hour away to do so. I checked their website and it says they were open 7 days a week during the time I went and during working hours. When I got there it was closed and no sign of anyone. Called their phone a bunch of times, knocked on the door, and even left an email. Never received a single message... Google, Apple Maps, and their website all had totally different business hours. Their own website even has 2 different working hour infos... Definitely will never do business with them. On the bright side, I ended up going to Seaside in Oregon to a surf shop called "seaside surf shop". It was an extra hour drive but at least they had everything we needed and helped us out immediately. That's what a good surf shop does. read more

Steven was our instructor for our lessons. They have very small groups (3 in our group) so there was a lot of 1:1 advice. He was very friendly, encouraging and patient. The beach got very busy very quick. He would go talk to the people around us so we could have space to learn. Signing up online was a breeze. Our only regret was not taking advantage of the discount board rentals so we could keep practicing after our lesson ended. They're a very down to earth bunch that we will be contacting again on our next visit to the area. read more

I took a private surf lesson at Skookum. Steve was super friendly and had me standing up on waves after just a few tries. We spent a good 2 hours in the water surfing, and then got to keep the wetsuit and board for 24 hours. He hooked us up with straps to attach the board to the car and a bucket for the wetsuit. I went out the next day and surfed for a few more hours. The waves were great for a first time surfer, small and rolling. I only have experience with bike rentals here. I am sure they're a great surf shop. I took my kids back in August. We couldn't use the Long Beach rental place as they were sold out. So we went here. The bikes were just awful..I mean rusted, the brakes barely worked and my son's bike chain came off no less than four times. We made the best of it as we were already into the ride when these problems occurred. Aside from the obvious poor judgement in renting bikes in such disrepair to children, the blase attitude of the woman when I returned them was so unprofessional. I was very pleasant and merely suggested that perhaps they not use the bikes any longer and told her I was disappointed in how much it cost for such a poor experience. Now I could have demanded my money back...however we did use them, and I also believe in giving them a chance to redeem themselves by offering a partial refund even. When they do not...I find myself here. read more

We had an incredible surf lesson with Jules. Skookum provided all the gear (including amazingly warm wetsuits). Despite a little bit rainy/foggy weather (we got the real PNW experience) we headed out to the beach. Jules provided thorough instructions on the beach -- with a focus on safety and technique -- and then we headed into the water. As we got going, Jules provided great feedback and was extremely patient as we got a feel for the board and the water. Could not have asked for a better way to spend an afternoon. Thank you, Skookum. These guys are pretty laid back, which is what we were looking for. With consistent beach breaks rolling in hour after hour, we had plenty of time to work on our technique. My 15 yr old son and I did a lesson and 2 day rental at the end of 6/2018. We opted for the Skookum Surf Co. 1:30pm lesson as opposed to the 9:30am one. We stopped in to the shop early to ask questions and get our wetsuits. Steven the new owner, after years as an instructor, was there with Tyler, one of the instructors. They patiently answered all our questions, got our wetsuits and let us change into the them at the shop. We then drove down to the beach access (about 2 blocks away), while Steven rode his bike(see picture) with surf board trailer to the beach. The lesson starts with some short work on the beach in regards to safety and how to properly catch and get up on the board. After that it was into the water, cold on the feet but after a couple minutes never was an issue. Steven spent close to 3 hours with us, standing in the water giving pointers, helping us catch waves. Later we were joined by a couple of people that had lessons the previous day. The neat part about Skookum Surf Co. was Steven gave them instructions as well while they were surfing, all while not neglecting us in the slightest. They actually encourage this, something we took advantage of the next couple of days, once with Tyler and the rest of the time with Steven. In conclusion, you will be hard pressed to find a company with a more hands on approach, patient instructors and complete flexibility then Skookum Surf Co. We had an absolute great time and my son was already planning on how we would be coming back to Long Beach. If you are renting boards and don't have a rack I would suggest a packing blanket and a couple of pool floaties from the dollar store, it is easy and works great, and protects your vehicle (see picture). read more
