Visited Astoria for the day and wanting to rent a bike to explore the trails off the waterfront. Found Bikes & Beyond in town and had a very easy/smooth experience overall. The employee at the front was very helpful, provided clear directions to the trails, and had us ready to go in under five minutes.. Rental rate of $5 per hour was very reasonable, and they had a wide variety of cruisers to choose from out front. I worked while in Astoria and considered renting a bike its a very bike friendly and relaxed town but didn't really have time to make the most of renting a bike. They do offer renting bikes so it would be a good option here as well. However, while walking around downtown a worker here mentioned they have a bike club and could provide bikes if you wanted to join. The staff was very friendly and I really liked the idea, but unfortunately thought the club was at 7AM so kinda hard to make work. When I finally did try to go, I realized it's actually at 7PM which worked better. I was not sure what made me think it was 7 AM, but sad I didn't get to join. It seemed really fun and I would recommend checking it out! He mentioned the club bikes down the river which is about 20-30 minutes and sometimes there are seals at the pier they ride down to! read more

Among the best bike shops I've ever been in. I was passing through Astoria riding the Pacific Coast route and I needed new rim tape. They not only set me up with that, but noticed two other issues with worn or missing parts, promptly replaced them, cleaned and lubed everything, and sent me on my way at a price so low I couldn't believe it. Love this bike shop! Great owner who is generous and very accommodating! Usually has a bunch of cruiser and fat tire bikes in line out in front of the shop just waiting to be taken on a ride for the reasonable price of five bucks per hour! Grab a couple and explore the waterfront trail along the tracks! Use caution though riding across the trolley tracks and larger gaps in the wood boardwalk! They had a great variety of bikes when I went in there in the summer and helped me find the perfect bike for myself. At the end of June 2021, I had discovered that the keeper on my bike was partially broken so I took my bike to Bikes and Beyond. I asked Scott, the owner, to replace my chain. He proceeded to tell me that my shifters didn't work and my cassette needed replaced. I said my gears shifted fine and I just needed a chain. He said he could put "new"shifters on my bike and fix my bike up. It was my understanding that he was going to put the same shifters on just newer, so I said ok. He put on 2 different mismatched shifters on my bike. He told me I had a 30 day warranty on the bike if I didn't like it. I took the bike back and told Scott that I did not like the shifters and I wanted my old vintage parts put back on my bike. He told me he no longer had those parts and that he threw them away!!! I told him he Frankensteined my vintage bike. (No seasoned bike dealer would EVER throw away any vintage parts or throw away parts under warranty). Scott said it was impossible to find parts for my bike because it was so old. I said you don't throw someone's parts if it's under warranty. I NEVER would have said "yes" had I known he was going to Frankenstein my bike with mismatched parts. I told him he needed to make it right and find a matching set that would fit my small hands. He found a matching set. I started riding my bike again and noticed that it wasn't shifting properly. So I took my bike back and told Scott it was skipping on the gears. I was practically seeing him daily about the gears. This was going on back and forth for about a month. Finally, I was supposed to pick it up again and I got a text saying not to come in until 6:30. So I came in and Emilio was working on my bike. He said he got it fixed and when he went to take it for a test ride he told me the chain was crooked and it was never going to work without a new chain so he replaced the chain. (That was the original reason I took my bike into the shop. I paid for a new chain but didn't get a new one until over a month later). Emilio told me he also replaced the smallest sprocket on the cassette. It seemed to work pretty good. I rode it a few days and the gears started slipping again. So I brought it back and saw Scott. I asked him if Emilio was there and he wasn't. Scott asked why and I said "same thing". The next day Emilio took it for a test ride. He told me I needed a "new" cassette. He called Scott and he said it was impossible to get a 7 speed cassette. Emilio told me he could put an 8 speed cassette on it and make due with that. He told me he'd talk to Scott. I talked to Emilio 2 days later and he told me Scott was going to look for one. There was a recent article in the local paper about bike shops so I called Prom Bikes. I asked them if they had a 7 or 8 speed cassette for a vintage Trek bike. He said I have both. Which one do you want? I ended up going down there right at quitting time so I left my bike over night. I went back at noon the next day and he had put an all new cassette. He told me that the cassette that was on my bike was an old piece of junk! He said some of the stuff was bent so it would never be perfect. Even though my bike was 30 years old I didn't ride it much and I had never been in a wreck. EVER! Nothing should have been bent. So now my perfectly awesome vintage bike, that only needed a new chain, was now a beat up Frankenstein. Scott charged me $80 for a piece of sh*t (non Shimano)cassette. $20 for mismatched shifters he eventually replaced with a matching $20 set. And $15 for a non shimano chain. Total $115.00 And kept, sold, or threw away my vintage parts. Prom Bikes sold me a brand new 7 speed Shimano cassette for $38.25 a new derailed wheel $7. And labor $20 for a total of $65.25. Scott was working on my bike for over 42 days and in less than 24 hours I was able to find a new cassette and have it all replaced. I went to Scott and asked for $65.25 the price I had to pay someone else to fix my bike. He told me I shouldn't have gone to another bike dealer and refused to give me my money back. I told him he needed to do the "right thing ". He refused. I told him I was just asking for my money back on stuff he charged me for but didn't fix. He refused. I had to pay twice to get my bike fixed. But really for something I didn't want in the first place. All I wanted was a new chain. All he wanted was my vintage parts. There is no question I lost! I trusted Scott. I trusted him to do the right thing. He failed me. I've been a long time customer of Bikes and Beyond. My vintage bike was bought from Bikes and Beyond. I'm so sad and disappointed. I just needed to tell my story hoping that it might help some other trusting customer to think twice. read more

Extremely disappointed with the services provided! I recently completed a Trans-America bike ride, and asked Scott to ship my bike back to the East Coast in mid-July 2023. Big Mistake! Not only did the bike get shipped a week later than promised, but it was quickly evident that little care and professionalism had gone into the disassembly and packaging of the bike. In a quick observation, I discovered my bike arrived to my home in a box that was clearly too small for my bike frame, causing Scott (and/or his minion) to disassemble the bike further than expected. The bike's front fork had been completely removed from the frame, with the fork bearings and related items lying on the bottom of the shipping box in partially wrapped cardboard. Upon removal of the rear wheel, I noticed the front derailluer had snapped from the frame. Additionally, I noticed the through-axle to my front wheel was missing, along with one of the rear panniers I had requested to be shipped as well. Scott requested photos and details of the issues, which I quickly obliged. He assured me that he would work with the shipper and contact me in about a week to remedy the situation . He never did. My advice to bikers transiting the Astoria, Oregon area: Avoid this establishment! read more

Bikes and Beyond has a great offer on their website for people who are planning on bike touring the Oregon coast. You can ship your bike to them, and they will either put it together for $50 or let you come in and assemble it yourself using their tools for $10. Sounds great, right? Well I certainly thought so. But then we arrived here one sunny day looking to assemble our bikes and begin our tour, and the owner (or at least manager that day) was ridiculously unfriendly. First he was scornful to us for not having a complete tool set with us, and then was very annoyed when we asked to borrow things like, you know, an allen wrench. Listen. If you don't want us to borrow your tools, don't put quotes like this on your website!! "If you choose to assemble your own bikes there is a $10 service charge. We will be happy to lend you a wrench or answer a question to help you get your machine up and ready for the road." No. You were not happy to lend me a wrench. You acted like I was asking for your first born son. And then when parts of our bikes were damaged during shipping, the owner/manager made sure to pick out the most expensive replacement he had to offer. Just blatantly taking advantage of our situation. It kinda disgusts me. To be fair, he became less blatantly mean when I asked him, "Why are you being such a jerk?" However, he still wasn't friendly. I'm giving two stars instead of one because the other staff were nicer, especially a military man working part time as a bike mechanic for fun who took 45 minutes to help me troubleshoot several probelms with my bike. But even with that man's kindness, the truth of the matter is that my wife and I were made to feel very uncomfortable and unwelcome here, and when you combine that with being price gouged, I can't recommend this store for any reason. read more

This place has short people bikes! You don't have to be average American tall to get a bike here! I'm too big for a Kid's bike, but too short for an Adult bike in America. After literally years of wandering into bike stores and trying to find a bike to fit my short partner and I in, we got super lucky oh a whim. I felt like I was back in Japan (aka short people bike paradise) being able to fit some of the bikes. Spoiler alert: We got our dream tandem that fit us perfectly that we thought never existed. The price was worth it to us. Way cheaper than buying then importing a bike from Japan. We've considered that, because we're such an odd size. The only Japanese thing about this bike is that it has shimono gears! Anyway we're very happy that we bought American, saved money. We will defiantly take advantage of the free tune up in 6 months. I am so ecstatic. They were so nice and helped us load the bike into the car. Never thought my dream would come true. Thank you Bikes and Beyond, I'm your number one fan. read more

Wen't in to get an opinion on a road bike that a local second hand store was selling. I had the vintage bike with me. I asked if the price was good and what it would cost for a tune up. The guy looked at the bike and did not really say anything. Another guy said he could look it up on the computer and see what the original cost was. While he was doing this a large impatient man who I think was the owner, started asking him what I needed. Then he came around the counter and I explained again why I was in. The large man asked who I was buying it from as if it where relevant to my question, but before I could answer he said "wal-mart"?. first of all, there is not a Wal-mart for three hours, also unless I'm mistaken they don't carry bikes from the 70's either. This was a clear insult. The bike is a Peugeot, which I know is not the worst bike in the would but the impatient man continued by saying "this is the cheapest of the cheap". I'm not sure if he was just completely offended that I'm not ready to purchase a Fuji or what but I'm not even going back for tires. He was insulting and made me feel like I was a waste of his time. read more

As the big bike shop in downtown Astoria, I had fairly high expectations and unfortunately they were not met. When you first walk in, no one greets you and continues talking to each other amongst the staff. When you first ask a question, it's responded to in one word statements, if they were annoyed to have to stop talking to each other and help customers. But even worse was the fact that they really have nothing to accommodate non-tourist bicyclists. I've come in on several occasions to ask if they have basic rain gear and accessories (hello, it's Astoria, you could be making a killing...) and the first time the guy said they were all out and didn't know when they would be getting any in, estimating that maybe when it started raining they would (even though it's Astoria number one, and it rained the prior day), and a month or so later just said they didn't have any. Their bicycle selection is definitely tailored towards huge tourist rental bikes and everything else is pretty slim pickings. For a shop that's been around this long, in a town where not only long-distance cyclists come through all the time, but there are bike commuters such as myself, it was pretty disappointing to see the apathy towards regular cyclists and poor customer service.
