As the big bike shop in downtown Astoria, I had fairly high expectations and unfortunately they were not met. When you first walk in, no one greets you and continues talking to each other amongst the staff. When you first ask a question, it's responded to in one word statements, if they were annoyed to have to stop talking to each other and help customers. But even worse was the fact that they really have nothing to accommodate non-tourist bicyclists. I've come in on several occasions to ask if they have basic rain gear and accessories (hello, it's Astoria, you could be making a killing...) and the first time the guy said they were all out and didn't know when they would be getting any in, estimating that maybe when it started raining they would (even though it's Astoria number one, and it rained the prior day), and a month or so later just said they didn't have any. Their bicycle selection is definitely tailored towards huge tourist rental bikes and everything else is pretty slim pickings. For a shop that's been around this long, in a town where not only long-distance cyclists come through all the time, but there are bike commuters such as myself, it was pretty disappointing to see the apathy towards regular cyclists and poor customer service. Dropped in 35 minutes before closing with my wife's bike's back tire locked up. We asked them to do a very minor repair job. They said "we are already closed", you can bring it in tomorrow. We literally are dragging the bike and he says that? He had enough time to sell me some tools to fix it myself though. Terrible customer service. They should be ashamed of themselves. read more

man this place sucked. or at least the mechanic sucked. at service. i just went in to buy some extra spokes. i've done this before at other shops and it takes them about 2 minutes to measure the length then give me new spokes. this guy took forever. had to take both my wheels off...stopped in the middle to tell his friend some long story about drinking beer on his back porch (whatever happened to customer service?) and made a note to tell me how smart he was that he picked out the correct spoke length on the first try. i was in there about a half hour waiting and waiting for this guy to finish talking and get on with it. he kept trying to get me to stay so he could tune up my bike. i know there are things wrong with it but i dont want other people touching it. but he kept trying. when i left i thought at least i got a good deal, 4 bucks for like 10 spokes. then when i stopped to replace a couple bad ones on my rear wheel i discovered the spokes he gave me were too long. wonderful. so i had to buy some new ones from a really relaxed, much better mechanic at a different shop in tillamook. if you are touring down the coast, dont waste your time here. wait until tillamook. read more

My boyfriend and I are currently riding cross country on our tandem bike and had an amazing experience at Bikes and Beyond. We had a broken spoke and multiple cracks in our rear rim. Scott, the owner couldn't get us back on the road fast enough. He immediately put everything on hold and had a rim (40 spokes made it hard to find) overnighted to the shop. He kept in touch with us on tracking info and then built a new wheel from scratch the second it arrived. We were only held up in Astoria for a couple of days and now are cruising around the Olympic Peninsula. I honestly can't understand how this place could have such mixed reviews based on our experience. Thanks Scott! read more

This place saved my friends and I from a disastrous bike tour. Although the lead up to our arrival in Astoria is a fairly long story, let me just say that I borrowed a touring bike from a friend the night before and had quite irresponsibly failed to make sure that it was in proper shape for a 250 mile trip. After a pretty rough 80 mile day full of mechanical failures, my friends and I were relieved at the prospect of fixing our bike problems but also afraid that we might be met with an ignorant staff, an ill-stocked shop, or sky-high prices. What we found instead were a couple of the most friendly and knowledgable employees I've ever encountered in a bike shop, plus wholly reasonable prices and all the parts we needed. One of the employees seemed there primarily to sell bike parts, but he was extremely friendly and gave us some breaks on the prices and was great about finding the parts we needed. The other mechanic was deft and extremely quick, and very eager to share with us some useful tricks and advice as to what we needed to get our bikes in order in the most cheap and reliable way possible. Seriously one of best bike mechanic experiences I've ever had. Although the prices were a little bit higher than my go-to neighborhood bike shop, I think they were way lower than a bike store in Astoria could get away with charging, and more reasonable than some of the more pricey shops in Portland. Frankly, I also thought we deserved a lot more scorn than we received (really, even I was flabbergasted at my own ill-preparedness), so I can't empathize with Ted's story. read more
