Somehow, I decided that surfing might be a really fun thing to try before I croak, and I set my goals to give it a shot before I turned 50. I had heard nothing but wonderful things about NWWSC, and as I was seeking a safe, women-centered program, I decided to sign up with Lexie for a weekend camp with NWWSC. After meeting up with Lexie and Dennis at a reasonable time Sat. morning, and making sure we all had the correct gear, we made our way to our surf spot, a gorgeous Shangri-la of a beach, south of Seaside. We started off our lesson at an overlook by learning how to read the waves, what to look for when picking out your spot, and how to best time your session. Once we were on the beach, we continued covering all the essentials that would make for a safe first experience in the waves. I loved the pre-surf yoga she led us through, something I had never done on the beach, and a much needed warm-up to help us become more flexible and avoid injury. Once we had practiced some dry-runs of the essential 'pop-up', we were ready to head out to the water. I felt well-prepared and gave it my all, but I had some difficulty figuring out whether I was regular foot or goofy, and spent too much time on Saturday sorting it out. I was a bit discouraged as I watched the other women in our group sail past me, but I wasn't going to give up, and neither was Lexie. With her glowing positive attitude and encouraging personalized direction, she gently continued to push me a little farther. On the second day, when I finally stood up for my first wave, we both howled out loudly in unison! My first experience with Lexie at NWWSC was 2 yrs. ago. Since then, I've bought my first board, sought out and enjoyed surf spots all along the PNW coast, and treated myself to a vacation of warm water surfing in Hawaii. Me and my three closest surfer-girl buddies (all who have trained with Lexie) enjoyed an epic private coaching session with her last year, where she continued to push us and brought us to the 'outside'. When my daughter is ready, I will be eager to sign us up for a mother-daughter session with Lexie, as I know she will provide the kind, empowering mentorship my girl will need to ignite her stoke. After my first surf camp weekend, life has never been the same. I surfed all last weekend, will surf with my honey to celebrate our anniversary this weekend, and can't wait for another surfer-girl getaway in just a couple of weeks! I am eternally grateful for Lexie and NWWSC for giving me that initial stoke and all the essentials to safely enter the sport, and for all the fun, challenge, and excitement surfing has brought to my life. read more

My family of 5 had a 3 hour lesson with NW Women's Surf Camp and a 1 hour follow up lesson the next day in the water. I can't say enough about Lexie and Aiden. They did a great job explaining safety at the Oregon Coast in the beginning of the lesson that put my mind a bit more at ease for my three kids. They also taught them about rip tides and conditions to make a great surf day. They were able to get all 5 of us up repetitively in the water and helped give tips of how to advance to the next level. They were just lovely people and caring teachers. I would recommend NW Women's Surf Camp without hesitation and plan to use them again in the future!!! read more

What a great experience. We have taken two lessons and both were entertaining and packed with great information. The first lesson was my entire family and the second was just my daughter. August 17th, 2015: This was my second lesson with Lexi. Last year about the same time I joined 3 other women in a group lesson. Lexi was kind, encouraging, extremely knowledgable, and a ton of fun! This summer I decided to take my 11 and 14yo nieces. Lexi completely heard and worked with their trepidation. Both girls were able to surf most waves and had amazingly wide smiles on their faces as a result of Lexi's enthusiasm and confidence in their ability. Lexie and her asst. instructors are fantastic. I've attended the one day women's surf camp with a college friend for our 30th birthdays. The instructors gave us solid skills and set us up for success the whole day. I loved it so much I went back for a lesson with my husband for our anniversary. With two great experiences I sought her out again when my niece and nephew visited from Indiana. Again she was great with an 11, 14, and 34 year old. My 14 yr old niece had to take a break--because her face hurt from smiling so much. We had an absolutely wonderful time with Lexie. We had never done any surfing before and all the fear that comes with doing something new just melts away. Lexie is a phenomenal instructor able to teach multiple skill lessons simultaneously. She takes you to the ideal location on the ideal day and really makes you feel confident. We did prep work on the beach- spent majority of the time on the water- and went over surf science to complete our session. You leave exhausted and exhilarated all in one. We can't wait to come back. Make sure to bring snacks and plenty of water as many of these locations are really pristine and a distance from parking. Also if renting equipment from an outside source have a written checklist and verify twice you have all your equipment before leaving. Then you are all set!!!! Northwest Womens Surf Camp is the most incredible way to learn how to surf! Lexie , the director, and her other surf instructors are top notch and caring every step of the way. With Lexie by my side. I was able to gain a sense of pride and overcome some pretty deep ocean fears. I am an esl instructor and take my international students almost every summer. They are always highly impressed by Lexie 's enthusiastic warmth and knowledge. I always feel so safe and confident with Lexie teaching my students. After all, they are like my kids. :) Lexie doesn't just push you into waves. She teaches you through muscle memory and self empowering technique and practice. It's a gift to have Northwest Women's Surf Camp in my life. Make friends for a lifetime and a wonderful sport to get better and better at ....as long as it may take. If you want to learn to surf from a supportive, non-threatening, warm, friendly, knowledgeable teacher, go surf with Lexie! My friend and I are very new to surfing, and older than 35, so we are probably not the easiest people to coach. We met her in the morning, and she talked us through renting the right equipment, picking the right beach to surf on based on wind, tide, and conditions, and then she walked us through and had us practice on the beach all the skills we would need in the water. When we got in the water, we were prepared, and both of us were able to catch waves and stand up before we were finished. We had a blast, and can't wait for Lexie's surf camp in July!!! This was the highlight of my summer! I signed up for the two day workshop through Portland Community College offered by Northwest Women's Surf Camp, owner Lexi Hallahan. I am so glad to have participated in the Women's Surf and Yoga on the beach weekend. To begin with, Lexi and her well trained team stress safety first! Prior to entering the water, Lexi ensured everyone understood low and high tides and when to enter and exit the water. She stressed potential dangers, how to read a beach; locate rip tides and possible structures that may be hidden during high tides. Students are taught what to do if caught in a rip tide, how to protect themselves and other surfers in addition common sense water etiquette. Beyond the excellent instruction, a delicious catered lunch with snacks and tea was provided both days. All equipment was included so I did not have to worry about selecting the best board for a beginner, what type and size of wet suit; should I have a hood, gloves or boots, etc. Prior to hitting the water Lexi lead us in yoga stretches and mindfulness, skills we carried with us into the surf. If it could not get any better, Lexi provided information about an affordable local hostel making my weekend at Seaside comfortable and within my price-range. Because of how Lexi organized this workshop, her instructions, and well trained team, I had a great weekend learning how to surf and look forward to attending another Northwest Women's Surf Camp event.
