Matt was so amazing to all of my girlfriends on their first ever surf lessons. The weather was insanely windy, but he still went out with all of us. The Surf Shop is one of 2 excellent surf shops in town. As a poser, I have only visited the shop to look for gifts, or to wait while a guest is renting a wetsuit and board to try surfing the super cold local waters. The service is super friendly, the rentals are very inexpensive and from what I've been told the lessons are great fun. (Yes, its s second hand review, but only because I am still working up the nerve to try it). I would recommend both this and the Steepwater Surf Shop any day of the week. I read a previous review of this place which spoke about the owner and I just had to laugh. I was taken back by the same sort of attitude until I realized that he is exactly like your drunk uncle who is alway givin you shit at family get-togethers. I was bringing some buddies in to rent some suits and boards and I saw a sick little fish (type of board) sitting in the corner and asked if I could rent it. The owner told me it was his personal board, but after a few seconds he told me I could use it if I just scraped the old wax off and re-waxed it. How cool is that? I would have never let some chump like me borrow my board, even if he was as beautiful and charming as I am. Most importantly, rentals are cheap here and they are super laid back. read more

The Surf Shop has everything you need...period. I've left my gloves at home...they had my size for cheap. I've left my booties at home...they had my HUGE size for cheap. My buddy was sick of renting...they had a good used board for cheap. Why not a 5 star then? I can't figure out if the owner crazy, likes to screw with my friends and I or if he just doesn't like us. This is the first shop I've rented from when I started surfing a few years back. Going in with some buddies of mine, I was a little intimidated knowing nothing about surfing. The store-owner, Al, is an amazing guy who doesn't judge you for the amount of experience you have but by the level of your excitement. By that, I mean, in the end it doesn't matter how good you are as long as you're having fun. He can answer about every question you throw at him that deals with surfing. Also, rentals are extremely cheap here! I brought in my siblings last summer and they felt the same way I did walking into the store until Al reassured them and made them feel extremely stoked to surf. It made me really happy seeing how Al interacted with my family being all witty and making them feel more relaxed. My buddies and I, a clump of college-aged students, always come in to say hi and see how the shops doing. It's always great to see the big guy who helped pave the way to my life of surfing. I give them four stars, only because they're closed on wednesdays, which is the day we generally go out to hit some waves, bummer luck I guess. Great place though. Told her I needed some wax since the stuff I bought from the other place wore off way too fast. I mentioned that the last stuff has worn too fast and that i was skimboarding and she suggested a different wax and that seemed to work a little better(though I prefer a brand neither shop carries). My buddy dropped a few hundred bucks on a wetsuit and the lady was pretty helpful in getting the right size. Both visits here have been very pleasant and the "aura" is pretty calm in there. I dig the wood stove, wish i could rent that for the beach. Not sure of rental prices or anything since we have our own skimboards, but I may try and long board this winter if I can find a mellow day. read more

Just have to say that the staff here is fantastic. I'm just getting back into surfing after a long time and the Surf Shop treats my family and I great. I have 3 girls ranging from 6-17. Al and Dave always joke with them and go out of their way to make them feel welcomed. Annie has been way cool too. I have rented foam topped board for the gals (which are awesome to learn on) and usually choose an epoxy board for myself. This summer was a breakthrough summer for my 11 year old and she is thrilled at grasping surfing this young. Today Dave took the time to give us some great tips (the genuine type, not the cheap easy kind) and it made my day. Learning again and having a true love for the sport makes me appreciate these guys all the more. I send EVERYBODY I know here...and EVERYONE LOVES IT. I'm relatively new to surfing and have been out to The Surf Shop several times over the last two years. I never hesitate to bring friends here to rent wetsuits and boards. The rental gear is generally in great shape, especially the suits and booties. Last time we went one of the boards we rented was in tough shape, but I'm sure they would have switched it out if we had asked. We didn't cause we were itching to get in the water. Retail prices seem to be on par with online prices and that's awesome, especially if you find yourself in need of something last minute. I always try to buy local so it's nice when they don't jack up the prices. Shop hours fluctuate in the shoulder seasons, so if you're really concerned check the website and call ahead. Every time I've been there they've opened between 10-10:30am and it's never been a problem. The owners are very friendly, kind-heated people and seem to really care about you having a good time. read more

I've rented from these guys twice now. The staff is friendly, the rentals are cheap, they are short drive away from the beach, and they provide you with straps to mount surfboards on top of your car if you don't have a rack or an SUV. I will be renting from these guys in the future. read more

I thought that I would check this place out for myself. They have some bad reviews and I have never been in a bad surf shop. I've been surfing for 40yrs and been in a lot of surf shops. This tops them all, the bad reviews is true. The person that was working today was so rude that I walked out without buying anything and I had items in my hand that I left behind. This is one of my favorite surf shops. The owner, (the cranky old guy) is freaking fantastic! Have a sense of humor man! My boyfriend was scared of him, but likes him because he doesn't sugar coat anything. I will always buy my gear from him. Do not rent here. Extremely rude service. I asked if a young couple (my newly wedded daughter and husband) rented from this shop 5mins ago. The manager raised his voice and said "shit I don't know" I was shocked. They also hold your credit card. I need my credit card to shop at other places. Bad experience. Folks that rented from this shop have to return it by 430. At Steepwater Surf Shop let us keep the board until 5. On an earlier review they mentioned cranky owner. I understand cranky but being disrespectful to customers is unacceptable business practice. Cussing at a customer shows you what lowlifes these folks are. read more

Awesome shop that was the first of its kind in Washington. The owner has alot of knowledge of the local area. And a lot of good advice for beginners. He doesn't judge people from Seattle and once told me that we were more of a local than most locals since we drive down 3 times a week and dedicate ourselves more than them. I stop by just to say high to him and see how things are going. I've seen him at Bennets and wish I could surf with him. When I first started surfing I would come all winter and he respected me for my dedication to learn and push myself without worrying about agro locals. Him and his wife are awesome go and visit him and his attitude changes a lot once he recognizes you. At first he can seem edgy and intimidating but show him respect and he will be the nicest guy in town. read more

Let me pick from what he had to rent, and hooked me up with some stickers for the kids. When I brought back the gear, he wouldn't let me leave without telling him all about my session. This place is awesome. Fast service and very good quality gear for rentals - our boards looked brand new. The owner can come across as a curmudgeon if you don't appreciate his sense of humor but he reminded me of a smart-ass grandpa and I loved him. He was rude to people that didn't take care of the rentals (i.e. didn't rinse them properly or tossed the wet-suit on top of a splintered fence without thinking) but come on, I don't blame him. I wish they rented by the weekend or per 24 hour period though. $15 each for board and wet-suit, $10 booties, $5 gloves per calendar day. We'll come back for convenience and boards but will likely invest in wet-suits. read more

Never been to this shop stumbled across it while reminicing over surfing up in washington in the 70's.I spent time in the owners tar paper shack while being treated like family by al and his wife.Back then there were maybe a dozen surfers in the state surfing year round.Al was always a pleasure to be around i'm glad to see he made it back to Westport. read more
