Convenience store cum food take out called "The Chow" for the artsy community of Bombay Beach…read more There is a vague Christian mood with a television droning out some mystical, esoteric program and a saying out of the bible pasted on the front window of Bombay Beach Market.  Some parts of the store have a department store like feeling with products displayed like featured items for display. Mostly dry and canned goods, but there is a small refrigerator of packaged deli meats.  I found some rare canned foods from the South that are not found in most Socal grocery stores. Glory Southern Style Spinach from North Carolina and Southgate Beef Hash from Tennesee. Apparently the owners are from the South according to the quietly diffident lady sales clerk.   Rest of the store has cleaning goods, odds & ends medicinals, basic hardware, tools. Also, the store is dedicated to the owners' eclectic objets d'art that depicts another vague feeling of the South Pacific or the Carribean.  Bombay Market is only store in town between  North Beach and Niland. Today we took advantage of being retired geezers on a Monday and drove out to Indio to buy some…read morefresh produce and get some lunch that has been recommended here on Nextdoor. The store is on the northeast corner of Jackson and Avenue 50. {If you don't want to have heart palpitations, come in from Calhoun Street going south and turn right on Avenue 50, and right into the lot on the corner of Jackson because the cars from the two two-lane roads hustling at that Stop Sign are enough to raise your blood pressure a lot.} We saw displays of the most beautiful produce inside the door. Plump oranges, zucchinis, broccoli, cucumbers and many other items show off their freshness and aroma. We found cucumbers, zucchini, carrots and the most fragrant strawberries ever. A bottle of Pico Pica hot sauce rounded out the purchase. Their food truck is parked on the southeast corner of their lot. @elowtitos @lgdesertstore We ordered two carne asada mulitas, a burrito, and loaded fries. Everything was delicious. The staff in the store as well as the food truck are so lovely. My husband was using a walker and everyone in the store was super helpful. We look forward to scooting over often now that we know about this wonderful group of people and the magnificent fruits and vegetables.

Located on the corner of Highway 86 and S Marina Drive, this travel plaza seems to provide everything that a traveler might need -- fuel and diesel Chevron), tons of food choices and ample dining tables (Pizza Hut, Subway, Cinnabon, Taco Bell, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Yogurtland, Jack in the Box, The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, Imperial County, and Salton 350 Bar), clean restrooms, a general store with travel necessities, and more. What was particularly interesting about this travel stop was seeing the local culture of the large number of ATVers. Virtually every second truck had an off-highway vehicle (OHV) in its bed or on its trailer. Not being local, we're not sure where they were going to ride, but we speculated that a significant number were headed to the Imperial Sand Dunes. These dunes, in southeastern California, stretch over 40 miles long and average 5 miles wide, and are a popular recreation site. While the travel plaza was easy to access, and had everything that you might need, we've rated it as a 4 rather than 5 because of the chaos of the plaza. All of the gas bays were occupied, with all sorts of vehicles vying for a place -- from motorcycles to OHVs to cars to tanker trucks to 18-wheeler. We chose to park "next door" because of the chaos in front of the travel plaza. It also made it easier to re-enter the highway.

Staff is friendly and efficient. My wife ordered the cheeseburger with fries. She loves that they use cheddar cheese. I ordered a hamburger and fries. The crinkle ut fries were prepared golden brown and without salt. The hamburger patty tasted like hamburger should. No hint of filler or binder to ruin the flavor. Sadly most of the people that came in only used the clean bathrooms and left. My wife and I enjoy supporting local businesses so we were happy to dine inside on a hot day.
