Skeletal Games currently runs Magic: the Gathering events on Chicago's southside, and they hope to open up their own store. I've listed the hours they run events weekly at Marz Community Brewing, hosting commander players, but based on their instagram, they also do events at Leveleater (3219 S. Morgan St.), and have participated in markets at the Ramova theater.
I've only been two weeks, but both time there were well over 25 people there playing commander and yesterday, for the first time, running a draft event (which they hope to do about monthly).
The commander crowd is extremely friendly, and it's a great way to socialize with new people. Prizes are awarded, including a participation prize randomly given to someone just for signing up. A new friend I met there actually got that door prize yesterday, and he selected a playmat from their merch.
Yesterday I played in what turned out to be the inaugural draft, drafting Avatar: Last Airbender, and I might be biased because I ended up winning the event out of 17 participants (humblebrag), but it was a blast. $25 to enter, which seemed a little high to me, but I haven't played physical drafts in a couple years and see now that the price of booster packs has gone up. Everyone also got a sticker and set of dice, which were useful for the games themselves. And me, the winner, I got a cool home-customized deckbox, with the Avatar logo 3d-etched into the top.
The players were much friendlier than a typical game store and everyone I've played there, draft or commander, has taken bad beats and topdeck wins in good humor. It's a superlative community, and a great thing to have games like this on the southside besides First Aid Comics (which I want to be clear, I also love, but is more out-of-the-way for people in the vast Southwest part of Chicago; there's so little here and you end up having to trek to the Northside).
The community is probably so friendly because of the Skeletal hosts are really friendly and enthusiastic. (I don't remember their names, I'm bad with names).
Playing games with new people and good beer? That's my jam. I live only a mile away, and will probably go back every week I'm able. read more
