We also all had backpacks. The car I had expected to rent, a Peugeot, was too small for the four of us and all our bags, at least according to the woman I was talking to at the Marseilles Europcar office. And she wasn't wrong! We upgraded to an Opel Grand 180D. It fit all of us and our bags. I've read some awful reviews of Europcar, so I was expecting problems of some kind, but the rental process went off without a hitch (other than the upgrade, which was needed). The car, although somewhat under-powered than I am used to, worked for us just fine! I have to say, I was surprised at the amazing gas (diesel) mileage. And it was an automatic! We drove it all over Provence, then to Sarlat-la-Caneda in the Dordogne, where I dropped it off. The drop-off process executed painlessly, without any problem. So, I can only speak for myself, but I would rent from Europcar again without hesitation.

My demand for an explanation via the "Contact Us" section on their website was answered with an automated reply containing a "case number" and a promise to investigate "as soon as possible". That was a month ago. Crooks. I'll never rent from them again, so many better rental available.

Hertz is in the Centre Gamma- Google maps will show you basically where. It is one story up from street level. Took us a long time to find the office. No one from Hertz would answer their phone when I called for directions. Once finally there-getting the car was OK. The office will direct you to the 4th or 5th level underground to retrieve your car. People there are somewhat friendly but don't do a good job of helping you that much. Our car was good and worked out well. Now, I would give zero stars for Hertz's expectations of returning the car. You must return it full of gas but the gas station directly by Hertz which they list first (Esso Express) will not accept any foreign credit cards so you will be SOL and have to either return the car without filling it up and pay like €100+ to Hertz or find the other gas station nearby that is hard to find and a bit of a confusing drive. Was pretty stressful. The other station they recommend Total Bercy at 238 Rue de la Charenton worked out fine but was like 15 mins away and a difficult Paris drive for someone not experienced with the city. So all in all the car was good. Now that I worked out all the kinks I would be better prepared for a future rental from this location.

They are either utterly incompetent or completely criminal. Or, perhaps, both. Just rent elsewhere. Anywhere else. Oh, and the one vehicle I did rent, they claimed a hub cap was scratched (not only did I not hit, graze, or otherwise cause any damage, but they didn't tell me there was an issue at car return nor have they presented me with any evidence of damage other than charging my credit card €210). Hands down the worst rental car experience of my life.

I chose to have Sixt fill the thank, and I was told I would only be charged for 1/8th of the tank, plus a fee. I ended up being charged 30 euros + 12 euros fees. On the invoice I received, it stated that I was charged for 14.15 liters of gas. The car that I had was a Fiat 500, and 14.15 liters equates almost for 1/2 of a tank (total tank capacity is 35 liters). The best part? The customer service does not want to hear anything and simply states, "Your invoice is correct" Laetitia must have been the least understanding and helpful person I ever dealt with. A quick search online and it shows that Sixt has a bad habit to overcharging customers, especially customers living abroad. Great job tarnishing the image of France. I will never use SIXT ever again. It's a shame this company behaves like this. Be warned.

We waited an hour for them to…read moreprovide a rental, as they could not provide the car we rented and were looking for an alternative. I could tell it was a big deal, as they were searching for a car that was to be returned to another location (Fiumicino Airport in Rome). The Avis employee was nice enough, but kept telling me I was getting a certain vehicle, then said, "wait no" and told me I was getting something else - by the way, MUCH bigger than what we requested, which is not great for small European towns. Once he figured it out, we were running late for a tour in Normandy and had to quickly get out of there. My insurance was provided through a 3rd party provider. As I drove the vehicle in the first couple days, I noticed more and more issues. At 40,000 miles on the odometer, it had been pretty beaten up. Tires were almost bald and slipped even on dry pavement. Rim smacked up. No rear wiper - just scraped plastic on the back window. Interior components missing. Dirty to the point we had to clean the inside of the windscreen as the sun made it impossible to see out. Brakes were chattering when braking at higher speeds. We were well into our multi-country trip, so I was planning on complaining about the poor condition when we dropped it off in Rome. Fast forward to Rome. When returning the car, the Avis agent told me we have a problem, as the front wheel and tire were scratched with a chunk of out of the tire wall. I told him the state of the car and that I didn't hit anything. I also pointed out the rust on the same wheel damage, clearly showing this had been there for some time. He ignored the fact and submitted the damage report anyway. After receiving the damage report, they went ahead and charged me $2,200 CAD for the damage. I launched a complaint with Avis, providing full breakdown of the issues with the car, its poor condition and images showing the state of the wheel with rust, etc... This happened October 16, 2025. After 5 emails and follow-ups to Avis NOT ONE response was provided, even though their automated system provided a support ticket number. I had to proceed with a claim through RentalCover.com, which they processed within 24 hours. I have never had an issue like this or had to submit a claim in my MANY rental experiences. I have personally, and through my companies I founded, been using Avis for over 10 years as a loyal customer. I will NEVER be using Avis again and will gladly move all corporate and personal loyalty to their competitors. I will also be letting my friends and colleagues know about my first hand experience. Avis clearly does not care about customer loyalty.

When we picked up the car they indicated that the car had a damaged windshield. The damage report only showed a red dot in the middle of the windshield. When we went to drop off the car an inspector spent about 10 minutes inspecting every inch of the car and said that there was another nick in the windshield that wasn't there previously. He showed me the nick it was approximately 1 millimeter wide. I said the damage report indicated that the windshield was already damaged. He said no this is new damage. He then showed us a damage estimate of almost 900 euros or almost $1000. This is a 1 mm nick in an already damaged windshield. I contested it and when I got home I found the charge on my credit card. I contested the charge. $1000. This seems to be recurring theme with them. Beware do not rent from Avis.
