Came home to visit family and decided to stop by Six Hundred to catch up with a friend. It was my first time there and I loved everything about it. Ambiance was great, food and drinks were great. Couldn't ask for much more. Here are some thoughts on my visit: Environment As soon as you walk in there is a huge beautiful bar and plenty of seating for dining. It has a modern touch to it with a great vibe for hanging with friends or for date night. . There is also seating outside if you want to enjoy the seasons. I overall l Service The service was great. We were seated quickly at the bar and the bartender was very friendly and helpful. She mad sure we had what we needed and made sure we felt welcomed. The food came out quickly and there were no long wait times at all. Food and drinks The food was terrific. Loved everything about it. We had the Buttermilk + Benne Rolls, Pork Belly Burnt Ends, and the empanadas. All of it was great! I will return to for these same tasty items and to explore their menu even more. For desert we had the cast iron chocolate chip cookie and it was pretty solid. It's a lot so you may want to share it with a friend. Six hundred never misses. The quality of food this place consistently puts out is what keeps it high on my weekend rotation. Combine that with a seasonal menu it's hard not to love Six Hundred. Service is always excellent the whole staff is extremely knowledgeable about menu items and ingredients. Highly suggest sitting at the culinary bar so you can watch these chefs in action. Can be a little busy at the bar but still has some quiet cozy pockets farther back in the restaurant. Appetizers - anyone you ask about this place will tell you to get the pork belly burnt ends and they arent wrong, The lexington style dip (sauce) goes perfect with the texture. The scallop crudo has become my favorite as the lech de tigre sauce is unreal! Main - They do a really good ribeye and ny strip but for me the standout is the halibut! I paired it with the pea risotto and roasted heirloom carrots and it was by far my favorite meal here so far. Beer/drinks - Surprisingly carry a lot more craft and local beers than i would have thought. typically keep a rotating Edmund's Oast sour (pictured). I'm taking this place down a Star. We didn't eat here for several months and came back to try the new menu. The appetizers have changed a little. We got the rolls and were disappointed to see a smaller serving and sesame seeds on top. Sesame seeds seem to be a new thing. Several dishes have sesame seeds and peanuts. The Burnt Ends were back to being okay, nothing special. My wife had the Black Miso Cod, she said it was not well balanced to accommodate the saltiness of the Miso. My steak was also as good as I remember. Dessert was delicious. The music on the night we came was all eighties pop music. I would expect something jazzy or lounge. We were promptly seated at our reservation time and informed about ongoing specials and recommendations. Food came out quickly and we enjoyed our experience overall. Steak for the price was very unimpressive, and I think I was unlucky with my cut having lots of tendons and was on the chewy side. Both our medium steaks were also on the undercooked side than we're used to. Would definitely try to find something else to try instead! Honestly, I was a little nervous about eating here because I have seen some not great reviews. However, we decided to take a chance and decide for ourselves and I'm so glad we did. First impression, we liked the "industrial chic" vibe, it felt fresh and funky. We started off just planning to have a drink at the bar. Our bartender Val was awesome in every way. Val encouraged us to come back for dinner (we had a nearby appointment) and we decided to do so. We had planned to sit right at the bar with Val but it was full so we were seated at a bar table where Sky took care of us and she was awesome as well. Our absolute favorite method of dining at Six Hundred is ordering apps, drinks, and sometimes dessert. In my opinion, the apps are the most creative and flavorful items in the menu. We love the burnt ends, the pull apart bread, and most recently the steak tartare and tuna ceviche. For our anniversary dinner, we came here and went to town on apps and got a couple cocktails. I ate here with my family after an event at Bailey Park. My child loves steak and since they have it on their children's menu, he was excited to eat here. Our waiter was excellent. If you order water, they bring out a tray of citrus to choose from. I really enjoyed this touch and was excited to have lime in my water. We started with the rolls and homemade butter. The rolls were so delicious. It was hard not to order a second pan of them. My son really wanted to try the New York strip so we shared that along with their creamy rice. I started with a salad which was light and refreshing. The steak was perfectly seasoned and cooked. I like how you could choose a sauce to go with it. I watched my husband struggle to cut it), the chicken Kyiv was so dry and you cannot taste any truffle, the greens were Sandy, the bread was edible but the butter saved it, the cocktails were okay. Our server punted us mid meal but was still working. I would give a 2.5 star but that's not an option, and 3 stars is just too much. And $11 for 4 tiny pieces of bread? This is a combo review. I've come here a couple of times now. It's very expensive so not going to be a frequent visit. If you get appetizers and 2 drinks each, you can easily spend 200 + tip, for a date. It's by far the most expensive meal I've had since living in Winston. There are a lot of positives to highlight. The service is great and the wait staff is very attentive. They seem to actually enjoy working there and it shows. My favorite dish of all the things I've had were certainly the muscles. I used to eat muscles almost every week when I was taking clients out all the time, and these might be the BEST ones I've ever had. They were not fishy at all and they were perfectly cooked. The dish was balanced and the dipping bread was toasted to perfection. Other food worth highlighting was the chimichurri sauce that came with the stead and the beef tartare. I probably wouldn't order the quail again. It was good but nothing earth shattering and a pretty small portion. The only thing we had out of 10+ dishes that wasn't up to par for the price was the scallops, they were definitely fishy and I would expect them to be SUPER fresh if you are going to serve them raw. Lastly, I would like to highlight the wine menu which was split by regions of different wine producing countries. I appreciate a restaurant that splits by regions and not just "white or red" option. I have mixed thoughts with Six Hundred. I'm glad Winston has a new restaurant with unique items, but I think the hype was larger than the experience. The building and location alone are real nice. Right across from Bailey Park, the building is nice, new, great views inside and outside. There were a few items that caught my eye but wanted more of a lunch type meal so opted with the smash burger. *I was super confused ordering the smash burger meal because it didn't come with the normal offering of side (fries, salad, etc.), but rather..."chicken wings". I had to ask the waiter if that's really the meal...smashburger and chicken wings, and indeed it was. The smashburger came out with two chicken wings, odd but I went with it. The burger had good flavor, messy but I didn't think it was a smashburger at all. It was two pretty big patties not smashed at all, which made it hard to eat a giant burger. The chicken wings pretty much were sesame chicken wings, I didn't mind at all but still confused with it all. The wait was decent and service not bad. If you went to Six Hundred when they first opened and weren't impressed, I suggest giving them another shot. Hugely popular but known to be inconsistent, they have hit their stride and consistently serve up beautiful plates of creative food. I ordered the Smoked+Fried Steak Lettuce wraps with worchestershire/ egg salad/ pickled ramp salsa/ radishes/ bonito and the NC Trout with dilly bean-crab-fennel salad/ Sicilian salsa verde/ hazelnut. The steak in the wraps was cooked perfectly and paired with that bite of egg salad, pickled ramp and radish, was just the perfect layered bite. The trout was rich but the dill and fennel salad added just the right brightness, and the crunch of hazelnut was the genius to finish it off. I love when foods are paired so well that you just want to get every element of the dish in each bite. I was really excited to try this place. And I'm still really excited to see them do well. The menu looks amazing and it's a great space. Our first stop here (early June) was just a miss. The server was friendly, but not helpful. Some of the food was really good, but the filet didn't have much flavor at all. The highlights...the place is awesome inside. They really made an incredible setting out of older industrial space. My next stop I plan to try sitting at the very cool looking bar. The pork belly and truffle fries were really good! Their appetizers all looked good. I love that the menu isn't average. The server was nice, but he didn't want to help much. "What's the foothills on tap?" "Oh, it's the seasonal". "What stout is this against the grain?" "Oh, it's their stout." "Yeah, but which one? They make a lot of stouts" "It's the against the grain stout." For the record I finally ordered the stout just to see which one...it was a can of 35K. Still not sure which seasonal foothills has on there. The filet just missed. It was cooked right, it looked great, but it just didn't have much flavor at all. When I finally asked about some sauces for the steak (sorry, I needed a little something on it) the waiter told me he wasn't sure because he didn't sauce his steaks. I don't usually, either. I'll start by saying I definitely want them to succeed and I will try them again, but we did not have a 5 star experience. We had dinner reservations last night and when we walked in we were promptly greeted and seated. And bonus points-they actually called earlier in the day to tel us where the easiest parking would be since there was a show in Bailey Park. We were greeted by our waiter who filled our water glasses and provided the drink menu. I decided on the 66 spritz, and my husband asked about the rotating seasonal beers. When asked what they were, the waiters's response was "they rotate from the local breweries". (Well yes-but which specific beers are currently on tap?) My husband literally pointed to the menu where it states "Ask your server about our seasonal beers". Honestly-we never did get a confirmed answer. We ordered the pork belly for the appetizer-it arrived super quick and was delicious! The menu looked delish and we had such a hard time figuring out what to order! We settled on 2 fillets, miso mashed potatoes, truffle fries, risotto, and Gouda grits. The stars is the show were definitely the truffle fries and Gouda grits! The miso potatoes did not taste like miso, and the risotto was also very plain. The major disappointment was with the steaks. They were very dry and flavorless (they were cooked medium). We asked the server about their sauces, and his response was "I don't really know, I don't eat sauces on my steak." (Well sir, neither do we but these need something added). We settled on the 600 degree sauce which was similar to A1. We were there about an hour and 15 mins, and our meal was around $150. The restaurant itself is gorgeous and the ambiance was so nice. Last week for my birthday, my husband, best friend, and I paid our first visit (but certainly not our last!) to the new Six Hundred in the Innovation Quarter of Winston Salem. Upon walking up/entry, it is clear that this spot gives off a sleek, sophisticated vibe which is exactly what we were going for for a birthday dinner. After being seated, our server was prompt, friendly, and super knowledgeable about the menu. We wanted for NOTHING during our entire meal, and with this spot being so new, that's a great sign! We started our meal with the chowder fries and I tell you right now, I'll be coming back to Six Hundred again and again just for these bad boys. They were super rich in flavor - crisp truffle fries on one side and creamy clams with big chunks of cheese in the "chowder" on the other. SO yummy! We also started with the Ember'd crispy wings and they were perfection. The wings were still crispy even with the house sauce and I loved that they give you the entire wing. For our entrees I had the salmon and risotto and my husband had the Korean style pork short ribs. Both ribs and salmon cooked decadently. The mushrooms in the risotto on my plate were plump and meaty which was a nice contrast. The only ding we can give these dishes is that the risotto on my plate and mashed potatoes on my husbands plate could have used more seasoning. A little salt goes a long way. Even so, both of these dishes were divine and just enough to not be overly full. I got the cocktail on special (I cant remember what it was but it was made with ghost pepper vodka so spicy!!) and it was phenomenal. As well as having great chefs, they also have great bartenders! Long overdue review incoming! I had an opportunity to celebrate here for my birthday back in March, a treat from my best friend, who was visiting with her bf from New York. We were immediately seated once checking in. I was taken aback from the ambiance of the place as it was spacious, beautifully renovated from the industrial fixture it was built upon, yet contemporary in feel. It reminded me of trendy restaurants I'd been to in NYC in a past life. After getting seated, we started on some drinks and got our orders in. At this point, with a toddler and baby in tow, I was a little worried that their presence might be off-putting to the staff and guests but that was later eased as they were accommodating and welcoming by both. That hasn't always been the case for me. Our orders came out and they were very beautiful. The only off-putting thing for me was that my order was incorrect. I received the venison, but didn't have the heart to send it back at this point. Especially with two littles waiting. I was a little nervous about eating it since I've only ever had a bad experience eating venison. It's always been a very "gamey" flavor and I've been told that if it's prepared right, it's great. Fortunately, I thought it was good! Although I'm almost sure that it's not my favorite kind of meat. It was nice to try it at a restaurant of this caliber though. I think I'd like to try this place again in the future since I'm curious about other items on the menu. At this price point compared to other similarly priced restaurants in the same category, I wouldn't say it's my first choice. Nice atmosphere also enjoyed seeing the open wood fire the cook was using as l walked in the door, the lively bar area overlooking Bailey park and all the alcoves and unique lighting fixtures inside the restaurant. I had a party of 12 people and our 2 tables were setup and waiting for us in a private area near the windows much to my delight. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful w our requests and the drinks and appetizers came out quickly. We shared the Burnt Ends that reviews raved about and they were chunks of pork belly, rib off the bone and covered in a pleasing sauce although the menu said General Tso's sauce it wasn't the typical but was tasty. Most of us liked our entrees but food wasn't consistently great. Duck gnocchi was very good, pork belly w clams not so much and my 6oz Cab Filet was only at room temp and my risotto was cold. I sent it back and the steak was a little warmer and less charred but risotto was still cold. The shrimp and grits were tasty as well as the Avocado salad. The home made mini bread loaves were excellent! So mixed reviews by our group but worth another trip as this new restaurant hits it's stride.
