This is absolutely one of my favorite places in town. Here're the highlights: -Fantastic drinks and plenty of local beers on tap -So many vegan options on the menu that are great (they also have the Impossible Burger if you're open to it) -The staff is superb. Seriously I haven't had a bad experience with anyone there. -The kitchen is high-quality and highly consistent. That's worth 5 stars all by itself. -Plenty of arcade games to keep you entertained. This last one is controversial but I like it about this place: On Sundays right after noon, this is a fun place to take your kids. It's a friendly atmosphere with the arcade games and there will almost always be other families with their kids present as well. Obviously no kids in the evening and your kids need to be by your side/supervised while you're there. I heard Sister served breakfast, so I decided to try it out with my sister (lol). We went on a Sunday morning around 11am. When we walked up, we were told to order inside. So, we went to the bar grabbed a menu and placed our order. I got the Spanglish and my sister got the breakfast burrito. We sat outside on the patio and our food was brought out pretty quick. So, the Spanglish is basically a mountain of all the breakfast foods - eggs, breakfast meat, beans, everything. It was pretty good. My only issue was with the red chile - which I still ate. It had a ketchup-y taste to it - I am not a fan of ketchup. My sister had red chile on her burrito and didn't finish it because of the red chile. I think it was a pretty decent breakfast. I would probably go back and try one of their other breakfast dishes- which also looked really good when I glanced at what other people had ordered. Went in one day during lunch and was immediately stopped and asked for my ID. No issue...I get it....but there were three people that walked in immediately in front of me and they were not asked for their IDs. If I looked 20 something I would have blown it off, but I am in my 50's and the people in front of me were a mixed bag age wise. The inconsistency bothered me a bit so I brought it up to the manager; who was a complete a-hole. He says that the people are his girlfriend and her family. I don't give a poo who they were...you check EVERYBODY or NOBODY. I will not be going back, and the sad thing is I liked their food. I like the pinball and the general vibe, but the short and heavily tattoed bartender was very rude to us. The bar was mostly empty, yet twice she pretended not to see us as we waited to be served for at least 10-15 minutes or so. We sat right in the middle too. Last time we were in town, a taller gay bald man served us and was mostly kind, although I could see him undressing me with his eyes. Yuck. Great place but be careful on leaving cash tips. I sat at the bar and the same bartender served me but when I left another guy came by and picked up my tab. I saw him put the receipt that said zero tip in a jar and the nice cash tip I left was nowhere to be seen. So many visits later, Sister is one of my favorite bars downtown. Drinks are strong and the service is sharp. They constantly host events and late-night concerts that compete highly with other venues in this city. There's a lot of room to sit and stand, play arcade games, or have a mountain of tots with fiery cheese and chile. I will add this is a legit Taco Tuesday destination. I stopped by here on a Saturday night for some quick vegan food to go, and had read the reviews about the food and was excited to try something new. I was starving and had just been stuck for 2 hours at a nasty hole in the wall Mexican place that shoved us into a back room with awful fluorescent lights and no complimentary chips and salsa! Huh?. They didn't have one vegan choice or alternative, but said chips and salsa, so I just sat and waited until we got done and then ventured out to Sister for great Vegan food, now super hungry! After an extensive and frustrating search for parking in downtown Albuquerque (can you say hangry?), I finally arrived and greeted at the door by bouncers insisting on a $10 cover charge because it was some "Goth Ball" night. Clearly, I wasn't there for this event, and explained I just wanted to order food to go, vegan, etc...but the bouncers and even a manager refused to let me order food to go without going to pay the cover charge. They made it sound as if I had ordered ahead I could pick up food, but I quickly realized it was pointless. How ridiculous to advertise this great menu of vegan goodies and refuse to even accept a to go order because of an event I clearly was not going to be staying around for. Horrible management skills. Accommodate an out of town guest wanting food go, it's just that simple. Luckily, Brixens was right across the street, and I had eaten there the night before and it was so delicious! They were pretty busy, so my service took a good amount longer than my previous visit, and I still just wanted quick food to go, but at that point it worth every penny and the longer wait. read more

When you walk the first thing you see is a locally painted mural on the patio, one of my favorite things about the bar. You walk inside and its nice and a little dark but it just gives off a chill vibe. The bartenders are friendly and fast! Tuesdays they have a Taco Tuesday Special. From meat eaters to vegetarians you will be pleased. The bar is very well known for their many pinball machines, they even have pinball tournaments! I have been patiently waiting, years, for a bar that legitimately owns a solid arcade. I never expected a music venue to own this crown in Albuquerque, but Sister gets my handful of quarters. A few weeks back I checked out our bike-friendly version of an international movement, CyQlovia, and I was definitely underwhelmed. But that's kind of irrelevant. It gave us (wife, kid) an excuse to re-discover Sister. What a revelation. Old school video games. The best pinball ever. Tacos. Tacos. Yeah, I'll say that again: tacos. And sriracha kimchi cheddar f%cking tots. Seriously? The kimchi ain't the best, but it's sodium heaven, and you can just forget about it. Go get 'em. Sister has absolutely elevated their game, beginning with the tacos, which aren't all that original (brisket = great, carnitas = so-so, chicken = solid), and absolutely ending with the pinball. So much pinball. Thank you, Sister, for pinball. There's a row of cool old school video games, thanks for that, I'm sure it's a good time, I'm going pinball. Pair this with the fantastic beer options (decent sours, plenty of unknown pours in our state), and free foosball, and you have family fun nailed solid. I can't comment on the concerts because, alas, I'm too old for 'em (but if they manage to bring Digable Planets to the joint, I'm there). It's a really cool atmosphere, and that is coming from someone that doesn't really like nightlife/bars/downtown areas. Its comfortable, but defiantly also gives you a great lounge scene as well. As a music venue I'm sure there is ample space. On a non-event night though, it felt a big expansive, although it didn't take away from the experience. Tacos and tots came up quick and they were pretty darn good. I was sure they would be a bit off with the impression of concert-first, cuisine-second..but I was way wrong. When I was freshly 21 and my friends brought me here, I was so impressed by all the almost intimidatingly-cool bartenders and patrons that I was afraid to somehow order the wrong drink, therefore revealing myself as decidedly un-hip and being promptly scorned out the door. A few years and many visits back here have cured me of that fear (although I must admit I still frequently feel like I'm not edgy enough for this joint). However, almost every great night out downtown starts here, and it's always an excellent jump start. We stop by here for an affordable drink and some tasty noms before we head elsewhere to catch a show or go dancing. They have tons of beer on tap and my fiancé is always glad of the selection, but they also offer ciders and mixed drinks for those of us still honing our acquired taste for beer. Also, the French fries are perfectly crunchy and you can get them covered in all kinds of tasty toppings! I love the pinball machines (the ghostbusters one is definitely the best) and the other arcade games in the back are a blast too. You can sit at the bar and meet new people or grab a booth and have a more intimate feel. I feel like every time I come down here I run into someone I know, and I always have a great time! read more
