This bar is filled with staff and management that are rude and inconsiderate. They are extremely judgmental and do not care about their customers. I've been singled out just because of the shirt I was wearing. Being a local restaurant I thought they would more open to local culture but are the exact opposite. Sister is not my usual bar, but it's a good place to hangout. Saying that, if you're looking for a good show this is the place to be. The venue is on the smaller side for concerts so it's a nice intimate space. There is a nice selection on tap. The tacos are delicious--my favorite is the Asian as it had kimchi! Tried this place for lunch on Taco Tuesday. Tacos are $2 for Tuesday's, I tried the carnitas and the brisket taco. Only complaint, I don't like the cream on the brisket taco, I asked for it without, but they forgot. It wasn't much so I ate it. Also got a side of tots, I love that they have tots and fries. Came here on a Wednesday around 6pm after a reallllllly long day at work. It was definitely ones of those "I need a drink and not think anymore" days. So what better way to unwind then a place with cheap but good bar food, nostalgic arcade games, and alcohol? I liked the vibe of the Sister bar, really chill and laid back. I met a few people while I was waiting for my co-workers to join me so that was nice. I always like going places where it's easy to talk to new people and get to know them, without having to yell over each other. I got the chili cheese tots and a brisket taco and they were both BOMB. Only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because the drink prices for 6pm on a Wednesday could've been a bit less but I'll definitely be back here. read more

I am a person that don't go to downtown often, especially late at night. We had gone there for an event that they were hosting. It's not very big, but it's cute. It's a nice chill atmosphere. A gentlemen who says he was the manager named "Reuben" so he claimed. Took our food order, and then proceeded to tell us we were not welcome. After that I tried to cancel my food order and he said we could not, he said he was the manager on duty. He eventually canceled the order and then threatened to call the cops if we did not leave which we were already on our way out, he followed us out pretending to be on the phone. I went because I saw reviews online that the food was good and I walk in and it took a minute to be noticed, when it wasn't too busy. Then I gave my order and wasn't talked to again until I stopped someone to close my tab. I don't know if it's because I don't look like I fit the persona of the atmosphere but I wasn't pleased. Great place to grab a drink downtown and maybe play some pinball on all one of their many themed pinball or classic video arcade games. Their food menu ranges from typical fries and tator tots to artisanal tacos and an amazing Sunday brunch menu as well. Because I'm an uppity, snooty, white b-word I obviously have some issues with this. Firstly, it's downtown, which I am not a fan of at night because I'm scared of strangers. Secondly, I'm snooty, and it's not a place I'd bring my grandparents who are my only friends these days(because of the b-word issue probably...) Despite my issues, Sister is actually a pretty fun place to go. They have amazing bands, or so I'm told, I can never keep up with the music scene, they have a wide variety of drinks(including those local brewskis we all love), and the service is consistently good. Realistically if you're a hip university student looking for a place to have your beers and hang out with your buds and be cool together I would say Sister is your place! read more

My first night at this establishment happened to be Hallows Eve and it was spooky fun. The beer selection was fantastic. The service was hip and speedy and the crowd was right up my alley. There vibe between young professionals and hipsters was very relaxed and comfortable. This is a cool place, especially to see a live band. The crowd can be intimidating and weird tho. I was more on the "observation side" than the "enjoying side" of things as I was sitting at the bar with my friend. Things I liked: We sat at the bar and the guys were attentive to serve us in a timely fashion. A big enough venue to enjoy a band There a dance floor for those that like to dance. Things that bothered me: There's only 3 stalls in the bathroom There isn't a girl checking and supervising the girl's bathroom but there was a guy for the guy's bathroom. Weird It could be the night and event I choose to attend, but half of the crowd looked like junkies. The cover was pricey. Girls conversation on the bathroom line was disturbing (asking for condoms) If it wasn't because I enjoy the company of my friend I would have given this place a 1 star. My friend encountered a uncomfortable conversation as she waited on line. Girls asking for drugs. I doubt i'll be coming out here again since it doesn't seem like my type of crowd and ambiance. Sister is a great addition to the sometimes sketchy downtown bar scene. The space is huge accommodating a huge bar, stage and a cool covered front patio. This place is in the same family as Anodyne (upstairs) and Blackbird Buvette, catering to Abq's class of hipsters and rockers. The beer selection here is nothing to scoff; they have everything from hipster-class cans of Hamms and PBR to super-fancy belgian beers. The staff is friendly (though the piercings and tattoos may not belie this) and able to choose a beer for you if you get overwhelmed like I do staring at all those unfamiliar taps! read more

After watching WITCH BIRD, BILLY BELLMONT, & THE GREAT DEPRESSION at Black Bird Saturday night, we ended the evening at Sister Bar. Sister Bar is conveniently hidden under Anodyne. The place was packed, in a good way. There was a dance floor full of swaying patrons and just enough room at the bar to slip in and order a drink. As other reviewers mentioned, the beer selection is phenomenal AND they have my favorite bourbon. SCORE! The ghetto factor is still pretty low at this place so check it out soon. Gotta say, the wait was worth it. I wanted to give it a couple of months to review the place--you know, for the novelty to wear off. Truth is, these guys did it right! 45 awesome international and craft beers on-tap! Full-service bar. Friendly staff--though it can be busy on some nights--especially when there's live music. As for a music venue, again, they did't it right. Sound is awesome and the standing area / dance-floor is large and well-positioned off the bar--so no winding through people to get to the bar. There's a back area with lovely vintage furniture and a foosball table in the rear, and a nifty garage-door'd smoking area out front where you can take your drinks with you. Upon entering, you'll have a more intimate area just off the right, with booths and a people-watching bar at the window--this area is separated from the music area. The bar is about as long as runway 8 at Albuquerque International Sunport, but that doesn't mean you'll necessarily find a seat there on a busy night :-/ The dance-floor area is converted into a dual-lane Corn-in-the-Hole play area for friends to gather and throw stuff. This place may come across as too-hipster, but once you realize that all-walks are grabbin a pint in this spot, you'll feel right at home and that 1960s couch! Also of note, they have the GREATEST Weekly Alibi dispenser in the city. There's a variety of seating types: stools, booths, chairs, lounge area - and a nice stage in the back. Sister Bar is a very unique place. They have LOTS of old school arcade games around the bar; all classics that we remember playing years ago. They have interesting decor throughout the bar, some of it creepier than others (doll and such), but it matches the concept. They have a large area for a stage and standing room for shows. Looks like it would be a great place for a small show, however I've never been to one. What has hooked me to Sister is the unique beer selection along with the atmosphere; it just feels comfortable. I'm honestly not even sure where some of their beers are from, but I've never heard of some of them before. Must be from around the country, but let me tell you, they are GOOD. My favorite is a Grapefruit Hefeweizen (I can never remember the name, no matter how many times the bartender tells me). It is quite literally the best thing ever. However, it is a little sweet, so I switch to an IPA after one glass of the grapefruit. They have a small food selection, but it's good food. My favorite is the Frito Pie, but they also have good tots and chips and salsa. Most other bars in the downtown area don't offer food, so it's nice to have an option with some good bar food. Only downside is you can't always count on getting into Sister Bar if it's the night of a show. Sometimes there is a cover for the show, so it's not a place I typically plan on visiting, unless I walk by and see there's no cover. But if their music is your scene, even better. read more

I'm a little conflicted about this bar. I like the wide open layout, I LOVE the tap list (read: a LOT of beers available), and the vibe is mellow. What killed my night last night was the bartender I had. Dude with a beard and big mole near his eye. Literally looked me in the eye, I motioned that yes, I need another beer, and he turned to go talk to some chicks at the other end of the bar. I felt so dismissed. Like, I know I'm no hipster, but damn, man. That's your job. And it wasn't like the place was busy and he was doing triage. So, not a fan of that guy, but otherwise this place is pretty solid. Stopped in based on the great reviews and the place didn't disappoint. Attentive, welcoming bartender, awesome food, friendly staff. I had the veggie burrito and my husband ordered the chicken tacos. We shared some chips and salsa. I don't even know all the good stuff in my burrito but the flavors blended masterfully. I tasted beans, potatoes, cheese, chilis and some sort of zucchini maybe? My husband enjoyed his chicken tacos equally: perfectly marinated chicken with a nice bite/spice. Salsa for the chips tasted fresh and with great flavor. Highly recommend! read more

Because I really did not understand the Saturday night 3 dollar cover have a great dj but no one is dancing concept. The first time I went to Sister Bar I loved it. I love the space, the beer selection and the tons of places to sit to hang out with our friends. This last time when I visited the bar, the place still had those things but on top of that they got a great DJ playing. But, it didn't seem like a place where people go dancing, tho they should they have a great space for it. Also, some of the bartender was not very friendly towards my friend who's English is not their first language. They had asked the bartender to make them something sweet because they had no idea what to order and they paid for it. My friend took a first sip and thought yuck I do not like this. So she tried to tell the bartender to make her another one, but the bartender pretty much said you have to pay for another one. So my friend was not very happy. So I went over to get her another drink so she wouldn't think this is the world's worst bar ever. The bartender I interacted with was perfectly civil and gave me a discount on the drink, tho I do think it should have been free by that point. That was my one and only complaint about the place. But overall, I enjoy hanging out there at sister bar and I still think some of their bartender is awesome at making drinks. But I probably won't bring my girlfriend there again. I probably won't go there to go Dancing either. Most likely it will be classify as happy hour hangout for me. read more

Update to the update: Sad to report that even the new bartenders are now ignoring non-hipsters. That's not to say that I won't go back to Sister -- there's plenty to love including the food, drinks, the video games, and the venue itself -- but I'll only go for shows or specific events. The Sister crew has made it clear that they're not interested in serving people like me, so I'll do my best to steer clear. Update: Went back last week to see a show (pretty good small show venue, btw) and there were two bartenders I hadn't seen before. Both were Johnnys (Janes) on the spot in taking care of us. Fast, friendly service, plus lots of patience in making recommendations and telling us about their new special drinks (the Thai coffee with rum is the shiznit). Was very pleasantly surprised and am updating my star rating to four from two. Best place to go if you feel like being ignored by hipster bartenders. Food is good and lots of beers on tap, which you might actually experience if you can perform the miracle of being waited on by the folks behind the bar who go out of their way to avoid eye contact -- whether they are busy or not.
