Chicken dish cant remember name best ever tasted. Used to come here back in 80's glad I tried it again

Stayed 2 blocks away on Thanksgiving weekend for a hockey tournament. So glad we hopped on Yelp and found this local gem that's been around for 30+ years. We were able to walk here from our hotel for some late night post hockey Chinese. And boy oh boy, it did not disappoint. First off, when we walked in the door they had Halloween decorations up - WINNER WINNER! We were blown away by some of the menu options. For example, I grew up in Seattle with Moo shu pork but here they offered different meat varieties. Their dessert menu also had things I had never seen before in a Chinese restaurant - candied bananas, candied apples, etc. We didn't have room for dessert but I would definitely try it next time! Hubs and kiddo loved the ginger beef! The server was super nice and brought us some calamari to try after I heard another customer raving about it! She told us that regulars often have one order in the restaurant and one to go because it is so popular! The service was outstanding and the food was GREAT! Plus they are open super late every night! Two thumbs way up!!! read more

Dinner at Sams was absolutely delicious! The chicken wings - crispy and well seasoned, the Ginger Beef delicate and crispy, the Salt and Pepper shrimp mouthwateringly superb and the calamari outstanding. The best Chinese food in Calgary and well located in the downtown 11th avenue location. The food was served fast and hot by Lisa our server and fun as well. Overall I rate this restaurant as a 10 but only allowed a 5 here. Sam stopped by to chat for a minute, what a host! We will be back for sure. read more

Lisa (Penny!) took exceptional care of our party! One of us is gluten free and it was clear that they take it very seriously. We had the Peking duck (non gf) and it was excellent! Everything else we shared was gf... and more than enough to satisfy both our appetites and pocket books. The meal was certainly, all freshly made with quality ingredients. Somehow, we managed to consume a whole Peking duck, along with generous portions of mixed veggies with black pepper sauce, Mushu Beef, Beef Hong Kong style Chow Fun, Veggie Dumplings, and finally the most famous Calgary dish of Ginger Fried Beef. This was our first visit to Calgary and when return we will definitely go there again! read more

For the second year in a row, we ordered on Christmas Eve. Last year the order got canceled on our way to the restaurant to pick it up. So my husband had to re-order and wait over an hour for the food. This year, we thought we'd try again. That was a mistake. 30 minutes before it was supposed to be delivered, I got a notification that the order had been cancelled. My daughter and I are Celiac, so it's difficult to find a place to order from last minute. This was extremely disappointing and showed terrible customer service. I understand that it was Christmas Eve, but if you know that you are going to be busy, only accept orders you can fill and staff appropriately. read more

24 minutes: That's how long it took from the time I ordered online until they arrived at my door by their internal delivery service. Take that all you food delivery companies! The order was exact, good portions, and steaming hot. I almost burned my hand on one of the trays and that was a good thing. They'll definitely continue to be my "go-to" when I have a craving and want something fast. read more

Ordered a late dinner from Singapore Sam's through Skip the Dishes tonight. In one dish, Shanghai noodles with vegetables, there was an unexpected protein bonus we didn't intend to order. See pics below! I contacted Skip, and had a chat with their rep "Harman S." He graciously offered a refund on the single dish that was visibly infested. "Affected", I meant to say. I patiently explained that my wife and I were both grossed out to the point of vomiting, hence, we were put off our appetites. The meal was spoiled--perhaps he could understand why I requested a full refund on the dinner. Wouldn't do it! I added that even were we both hungry and motivated to eat the other dishes, we've both lost confidence in Singapore Sam. What other untold but unseen mysteries might there be lurking -- consequences of the same unsanitary conditions that allowed our little friend below to "get in on" our meal? He wouldn't help. Wouldn't budge any more than our little dead friend. Thank you, "Harman" -- for your unsatisfactory assistance. Thank you, Singapore Sam's. We won't be using either of your services again. read more

Ordered Ginger Beer and Wonton Soup for delivery. Food arrived well package and warm! The portion size was huge - definitely designed to be shared dishes. The ginger beef was flavorful and crispy, and the wonton soup was delicious. My only complaint is that it didn't automatically come with steamed rice like you would except with most Asian take-out options. I'd give 4.5/5 if I could, but I'd say my overall experience was worth a full 5. read more

Best Chinese food in Calgary. The service is top notch, friendly and attentive. The customer is the winner at this gem of a restaurant.

Super poor service. I ordered the Sesame chicken with a side of pork rolls. There was no sauce for the rolls, then they provided sesame chicken by itself.. no rice or anything. I'm from the US where you get rice or veggies or something. Not just some dry chicken with sesame seeds. I can't find any sauce! You guessed right! We won't order again from here. Hopefully, husbands soup is better than my order. read more

Meh it was alright. I've had better Chinese food in Calgary but I've also had worse. We ordered the Ginger Beef, Salt and Pepper Prawns, Palace Chicken, Chicken Chow Mein, and Spring Rolls. The Ginger Beef was easily the best of the dishes. Salt and Pepper Prawns come in second. The Palace Chicken was awful and was loaded with gristle. The Chow Mein also wasn't up to par. I'm not too sure if I would order from here again but one thing they have going for them is that they're open extremely late for when the munchies may occur. read more

Last night I ordered, through Uber, Kung Pao Chicken, Garlic Beef With Mushrooms, Peppers And Onions In Black Pepper Sauce and Singapore Noodles. For the uninitiated, Kung Pao, if done properly is as authentic a Chinese dish (Sichuan) as Roast Duck Lo Mein, another dish ruined by many a fake Cantonese restaurant. Having had Kung Pao in Taoyuan City (from Sichuan expats) and in Chongqing, the slop served by Singapore Sam's is not even remotely the real thing and slop it is. Baby corn, some kind of squash, and other vegetables you will NEVER see in either city, so why is this restaurant conning diners into thinking they are eating Kung Pao Chicken when they are not. The baby changed the flavour so drastically not even the taste was close, dreadful. In the other two dishes, the flavour was definitely there but the beef had so much fluids that when the starch cooled, it turned into beef soup, literally. I drained about 350 to 400ml of fluid from the dish. The Singapore Noodles were quite tasteful but the noodles were so overcooked that they were mushy on arrival. A competent chef would train his or her staff to not fully cook the noodles because they will steam further while out for delivery and would arrive with perfect texture. I can name a few restaurants in this city that are fully aware of this, SS is not one of them. If they can get the taste right, then why can SS not get the presentation correct? There is no excuse for sloppy kitchen habits. Singapore Sam's is more hype than substance. Although not quite the same fare, I will take Great Taste anyday over SS. Most the time, but occasionally not always, they get it right. I have no complaints about Uber, they stand behind their service. read more

I have both dined in late night and ordered take out. Both experiences were great! Dining in after a night out, is so fun and unlike anything I've ever experienced. Such fun music and yummy food. My take out experience was wonderful. I always wish to have crispy noodles in my chow mein and they listened! Ginger chicken was good but sauce went mostly to the bottom of the container. I will absolutely order from her again on a future visit from Calgary. read more

Just got my order and the portions were on point however the singapor Noodles had this odd dry texture. There was an odd texture to the noodles like very very fine sand? My second dish was a little bit better. As Westernized Chinese food goes it was not my favorite and for the price I would not order from them again. read more

Sad, sad, sad. We want to help local businesses especially during this time, but this highly disappointed. I don't recommend you to go there if you're craving Chinese. It's tasteless and the spare ribs were hard as rock! Dumplings were bigger than usual without anything special and Cantonese noodles were lacking flavours! Even if Chinese restaurants aren't the best in Calgary, there are better places in Calgary for that. read more

Steam vegetable was great! They are open until late so it's one of the better choices around the area

This place was better than expected given some of the other reviews on here. Decent vegetarian selection here, so we decided to order a couple of dishes to share for take-out one night. The gai lan and mushroom dish was very tasty -- the satay sauce was on point. The tofu dish was decent too, though the sauce was on the sweet side, catering to the Western palate no doubt. Not very authentic, but it hit the spot. Bill came to $36 (with two orders of steamed rice) -- not too bad. OK spot in downtown Calgary for Chinese. read more

For drunken fun after a night out.... 4/5 For actual food enjoyment... 1/5 Okay so apparently even in my drunken stupor I could not get over how bad that food was.... this is possibly THE worst Chinese food I've ever had! Now sure.. I was drunk.... but that is normally accompanied by increased enjoyment of crappy food! The only good thing was that there was actually a decent amount of meat on the chicken wings. I can't say anything else good about the food here. So I'll just stop. Atmosphere on the other hand was awesome and tonnes of fun! A perfect place for dancing on chairs and drumming with your chopsticks.... think 80s and 90s dance music and classics with a party vibe and crappy food. By the way, the dancing and drumming is pretty much expected of you. Despite the bad food, this place was hella fun and quite the experience! You should experience it at least once.... never been anywhere quite like it! read more

Not much nice to say about this place. Stopped off for a wee rest on a Saturday night a while back post-bar and pre-Warehouse. It was crowded with a ton of people who had flooded out of the nearby clubs. The atmosphere was okay, if crowded, but the seating arrangements left something to be desired. Me and my girls got chatted up by a group of dutch pilots (?!) which was sketchy (and if we hadn't been at almost the same table, they would have been easier to ignore), and the food was subpar. I've had my best meals when I'm tipsy and my senses are dulled, but even then I could tell that this was subpar AND expensive. Paid 13 dollars for chicken and cashews in yellow bean sauce, and got a bunch of celery in sauce with a little bit of chicken and three cashews. Everything was soggy with grease. First and LAST time! read more

beware, i have gotten hairs in every single order the past 4 times i've ordered. why go back you ask? it's delicious. pick your battles.

Alright so at the end of a night of celebrating and having a few bevies we decided to stop in here for a bite to eat. We heard that Singapore Sams can be quiet an entertaining experience. It had an odd but interesting vibe. When we entered the place sorta resembled a karaoke bar. The tables had cheap colourful plastic cups and plates which gave it a child's birthday kinda feel? Anyhoo the point to the resto is that you are encouraged to make some noise with your chop sticks to the blasting pop tunes playing. Overall people seemed to be having fun and It was full of the rowdy after bar types. The food was mediocre at best. It did come quickly and they just tossed it on your table. Definitely over priced. If your looking to extend the party after a night out and you just need to get some grease into your tum after boozing it... this quirky place is for you. If you are sober I would recommend looking elsewhere . read more

It was after 10pm on a Sunday evening on the way home from the airport and I needed a snack before passing out. On a stop at Last Best for a growler fill, my options were Canadian Pizza, Mac's or Singapore Sam's. Since I was feeling the Asian vibes thanks to multiple Asian airport stopovers, I decided to give this place a go. I walked inside, and two people were eating plates of typical Chinese (western) fare by themselves, with no staff in sight. But he appeared after a few minutes and in the meantime I'd found a menu (hiding on a lower shelf at the desk if you're in the same position). I was looking for something quick and he assured me that the fried rice would only take about five minutes. Sold. I chose the Combo Fried Rice ($10.95) with shrimp, chicken and bbq pork. Would I like that spicy? Heck yes. And would I also like some chili oil on the side? I'd never say no. The bonus is that while you're waiting, you get a clear view of the carpark to keep an eye on your vehicle. A few minutes later he brought out it out ready to go, including chili oil, another spicy sauce and a fortune cookie. The container (typical round aluminum foil) was packed full and there was plenty to share. And it was pretty tasty! I'm not sure I would choose this place over others, but it's a great spot for late night eats. read more

There is an unfortunate amount of hate-on going for ol' Sam's, so I've decided to come to their (honest) rescue. First, let me give you some context: 1. This is not the place to come for authentic Chinese cuisine. Abort mission if that's your goal. Go somewhere with a name that you can barely understand. 2. This is not the place to come for personalized service and attention, especially not at 2am on a weekend. You will be treated like what you probably are - a starving drunk person just as likely to skip out on your bill as you are to vomit on their floor. Seriously - these folks put up with a lot. A LOT. Can you imagine taking care of hundreds of drunken morons every single night for the entire weekend? It'd be like babysitting 100 children with ADHD who are also carrying loaded pistols and have an undeniable urge to hump on your white tablecloths. So I chose to cut them some slack. 3. I liken this to being the Denny's of Chinese food. It is greasy, unhealthy and oh-so-delicious. You love it while your eating it. You tell yourself it's the greatest meal you've ever had in your life and you want to marry it. But in 15 minutes it's going to sit like a stone in your stomach and you will question every ounce of your judgment. If you can survive this brief period of remorse, your overall experience will come out on the positive. 4. On a diet? Yeah, no. Not for you. Yes, I too have been part of the raucous crowd that convenes here late at night after a night out in the Beltline. I have slithered their noodles down my throat and I have savored the juices of their finest ginger beef. I literally can't imagine coming here for a sit down meal at any other time. I've also come here for the lunch buffet - as take out. The place isn't quite as fun when the disco ball isn't a-glowin'. Now if you're a student, a cheapskate or a person in need of large quantities of food (as much as you can physically force into a styrofoam container) - this place is a great option come lunchtime. Just make sure you bring CASH. They get a bit ornery if you try to pay with Debit/Credit. Pro tip: Stuff as much as you can into your styrofoam container and just hold it shut, even if it won't close naturally. You might get dirty looks, but I've never been yelled at - yet. Mmmmm, 5 pounds of Calgary's finest imitation Asian cuisine. Is 4 stars probably pushing it? Yes. If I could I'd give them a 3.5. But as someone else mentioned, Calgary owes these fine folks a bit of thanks for giving us an option other than late night pizza or microwaved Alphaghetti. read more

I have posted this review anonymously before because I was wary of the restaurant owners and their affiliations, but I believe it is important that people know how I was treated at this establishment so that it doesn't occur again. My boyfriend and I tried to use a coupon from the well-known Entertainment Book here- a 2-for-1. The waiter first told us that it didn't apply to late-night menu (same menu...), then threatened to punch my boyfriend in the face when he asked to see proof of said mystical 'other menu'. I'm horrified to say I'm not lying. We were screamed at, had a mag light flashed in our faces, then were dragged and thrown out the back door. Keep in mind this was not a case of drunken disorder. This was a couple being thrown out for trying to use a coupon. We called the police, who couldn't do anything, but the officer himself said he would never take his own family to dine at this restaurant. read more

No, this isn't the best Chinese food in Calgary. But, where else can you get food so late that isn't Boston Pizza or a pub? Singapore Sam's owners/managers deserve some kudos for offering us Calgarians something that is hard to come by and that is a place to go after the bars/clubs/pubs shut down at 2ish! They stay open til 3-3:30 AM from Wednesday to Saturday. That is pretty unheard of. I've been there after 2AM and it's a gongshow! So it can be quite hilarious or quite annoying, depending on your mood. They keep the party going on weekends by having the dance music turned up and the disco ball turning so you've been warned. This isn't where you go for quality Chinese, but you can get your late nite Chinese on and that's worth Yelping about. read more

I had no idea that this place was a late night hangout... it explains alot. I went with 2 friends around dinner time and it was deader than dead. As soon as I walked in I was hit with the smell of grease. It was as if the air was thicker in there.... I knew that when I left I too, would reek of grease. I did. The service was ok. However the buffet at the back was not. The presentation was less than stellar and almost all the food was swimming in pools of grease. I ended up eating about 12 bucks worth of veggie spring rolls. They were greasy good, but definitely not healthy. I went once, i will not go again. yuck. read more

Omg this place is sad!!! I remember going here when I was a teenager and it was mainly an enjoyable experience. It's been years since we've been here and decided to give it a shot. Jeez! The decor hasn't changed and you can tell it's super dated. The price for the dinner buffet remains low $13.50 but the food is awful. And in the this case you certainly get what you pay for! They only have one side of trays half filled with cold mediocre food. The "fresh" items for the Mongolian grill looks like scraps from the cutting board. These guys are half baked and need to refresh everything about the restaurant or give up! Also they don't do the candied apple and bananas anymore so 10000000 thumbs down! read more

I've been to Singapore Sam's many, many times - at times arriving with drunken people (in my party or others' parties) after last call. Some of these inebriated people are the ones who mar the image of this business, making it a bad experience for others and for the staff. I have never served tables or worked in the service industry but can imagine it to be specially difficult to perform when tending to 'drunks'. Prices are high at night - I'm not sure about lunch time, never been there at that time. Yes, this is fast food quality food but they've got the best GINGER BEEF in town! read more

How can you not love Singapore Sam's? It's loud, it's crazy, it's a mix of karaoke and Chinese food. Sounds like an odd suggestion but their fried chicken wings are BOMB.com. This is by far the craziest and most fun restaurant I have been. Imagine you are eating Asian food at 2 o'clock at night with 80s music playing in the background and everyone not eating either dancing on the table or playing drums with chopsticks. I haven't been here in ages. Nothing much has changed, actually nothing has changed except for the place being run-down. I used to frequent it back in the early 2000's when the dining room was actually decent but the place is now falling apart. Mismatched chairs, flaking off paint, broken tiles and a hallway that doubles as a storage room. If you have limited mobility this place is a death trap and forget even being able to get to the washrooms. I hear the place gets lively after the bars close and I guess that's all it's good for at this point. I really hope the ownership takes the reigns here and restores this place back to a fraction of its former self. read more
