Came here for the AYCE brunch. Food was good and service was kind and timely. You put your order on a piece of paper and the waitress comes by to take it. Everything tasted great. They do give a lot of rice with the curry and the rice burgers, so I would be careful about ordering too much. The space is small, so you'll have to reserve or come early if you want to get a spot before the rush. Washroom was kind of weird. Not sure why they had tables and chairs in there, lol. Wonderful spot for home style Japanese food. Redheads specializes in Japanese curry, katsu, and karaage, and they do these things well. I've been on two occasions now. I really like their weekday evening specials. Thursdays nights it's 1 piece of karaage for $1, and on Sundays it's 1 piece of takoyaki for $1. Both are perfectly cooked and full of flavor. I like to get the Japa Rice Bowl, which has a bit of everything: hamburg steak, pork katsu, chicken karaage, onsen egg, curry, and salad. The curry in particular is excellent; you can taste just how many veggies and fruit went into the sauce. For dessert, I would recommend the apricot donut; it's light and delicious. I'm also always impressed by how lovely the service is. The servers are incredibly kind. To top it all off, the food is extremely affordable, especially considering the restaurant's location downtown. We're from LA visiting Calgary + Canadian Rockies and were craving Japanese curry, so we decided to check this place out due to the raving reviews. We ordered the chicken karaage curry and pork cutlet curry, and even though both proteins were cooked perfectly, we thought the curry was just OK. The consistency was great -- thick enough/not too runny -- but it could have used a tad more spice. Also, the rice wasn't very soft or sticky as Japanese rice usually is. If you ever come to LA or Irvine, check out Coco Ichibanya, an authentic Japanese curry brand with several restaurants that started in Japan. The curry there is the BEST you'll ever have. They also have spice levels you can choose to your liking. We also ordered four onigiris (rice balls) and were surprised they were just the premade onigiris that you can easily pick up at a Japanese market. Nothing special here. We were hoping for FRESH handmade onigiris. Oh well. Service here was prompt and efficient. The staff are all Japanese and speak Japanese, and we felt like we were back in Japan. It's a very nice restaurant. On the weekends you have the option to do the all you can eat or just order off their menu/buffet. What I like about them is if your friend wants to order off the buffet and you don't, you still can do things separately. They just ask that you don't share. If you are a big eater, the buffet is a good deal. You have a choice of 3 different Eggs Benny, Sushi, Sushi hamburger, etc. There are tons in the buffet. Right now during the pandemic it's more of an all you can eat style where you order as you go. I personally chose the Karaage curry ramen. I have to admit, it's not my favorite. I will caveat that it appears there was only one server and a lot of our food was cold, so didn't taste as good. . Faves: 1) miso soup - nice and hot and very tasty; 2) French Toast - my fave and nice and warm actually. This came last even though we ordered it first; 3) sushi - fresh and tasty . Other: Benny was ice cold so didn't like it :(; Same with veg; Chicken Karage was good when it was hot; Beef Curry with rice - didn't have any beef in ours. We returned there a few weekends ago for our second time .... and have never felt so unwelcome, courtesy of your male serving staff. We left your establishment feeling embarrassed, confused and unfairly targeted. We were looking forward to our second visit and future visits after an enjoyable first visit, but we feel like your male wait staff won't make us feel welcomed should we return. I can't believe I don't have a review for my go to curry place. This place is amazing. If I am craving some Japanese comfort food this is my go to. I typically order their curry katsu which is the best in Calgary. Their curry sauce is less sweet and definitely has a unique taste compared to others. However, we recently went for lunch and we were not that hungry so we got their Japa rice burger combo and katsu sandwich. I love their ume(pickled plum) rice burger. Think of it as an onigiri (Japanese rice ball) with a crunch. We also really like their katsu sandwich muuuuuch better than the "first corner store" in Bridgeland. They also recently added a dinner menu where you order small plates and can have a more diverse item selection . However, it seems we always end up here during lunch time. We would probably recommend skipping their ramen though, but everything else is amazing! read more

I like Redheads. For some reason, I thought this is a restaurant given that you can make reservation on OpenTable. But it turns out somewhat like a fast food restaurant but not quite really a fast food restaurant. Its basically a café with other options that are not café style food. So not just burger and sandwiches here. They do have some interesting things like the sushi burger made out of sushi (only issue is the salmon is not raw). I got their bento box with the miso katsu. The katsu (fried pork) was not bad. I liked it. The portion was very big for $10.99. Box itself looks small but don't be food. I was really full from eating here. On top of it, I got a Japa Doughnut (matcha flavor). I liked it. it was freshly made (I can tell). Limited supplies on those doughnuts. The doughnuts are $1. Décor of this place is kind of dark. Not romantic seating though. So you walk in and you order right away. Its pretty much self serve here. You get your own food and seat yourself. I noticed that this place is not very busy during lunchtime. I am guessing because its in Beltline and not downtown which makes a big difference. Highly recommend giving this place a try. read more

Redheads is an easy favourite, if street food is more interesting to you than familiar Japanese dishes like sushi and tempura. While not always totally traditional, their dishes capture the essence and soul of classic and authentic Japanese flavours, while keeping things fresh with their own flourishes. Their katsu curry is total comfort and homey, and doesn't sit heavy in my stomach. They sell so many different kinds of onigiri, but I like grilled salmon the best. On the dinner menu, the fried Japaghetti is delicious and mildly addictive, and it should be, given that it's considered a signature dish. The atmosphere is simple, unpretentious, and charming. A large TV screen over the bar often shows Studio Ghibli movies. They have very nice outdoor seating for such a small downtown space. This was my first time visiting Redheads without eating their AYCE brunch, which is such good value for your money. I ordered the JAPA Katsu Curry - special beef curry sauce with Katsu, rice, potatoes and onions. Calgary lacks good curry, so this is one of 2 places I'll go (so far) to have it. The katsu was crispy and tender, but definitely order the cheese topping for it! The miso katsu skewer was also pretty good, and super crispy and full of flavour. I'll have to order from their dinner JAPAS menu, where you can create your own course of foods consisting of smaller dishes of their regular menu items. Ended up here on a whim because another brunch place had a 45 minute wait - and let me tell you, we are so glad we found it here! Walking in, it looks like you're in a tiny coffee shop - not a Japanese cafe, so we were a bit confused. It's snug in here, which is a little awkward for the buffet part of things along the counter, but it worked. We did the brunch buffet for $18.99 each (weekends only) and it's a combo of pre-made things and made to order items. For the self-serve items, there was soup, a garden salad, some hot noodles (they were dry) and slices of pork (also a bit dry). Oh, and some Japanese doughnuts, which are basically little cakes, not like the doughnuts from Timmy's. You order your made to order things off a menu with a dry erase marker and there's everything from french toast to eggs benedict to Japanese curries. We tried a couple of the curries (so so good - flavourful and hearty and when you add a perfect soft poached egg, it's amazing), the french toast (so fluffy and soft!), the rice burgers (which are fat pieces of rolls basically) and the sliders (omg they are all so good). My favourite part is that you can add things to all your curries - so I added hot dogs. They cut them like octopuses so they've got crispy legs and goddamnit, it's so good I could have cried. I honestly can't say enough good things about them - AND they have cold Sapporo on draft that just makes everything taste so much better. This may be my new favourite restaurant in Calgary. Redheads was introduced to me by a friend. I was told to get a rice burger. I was after a burger and she told me try something new. This was definitely worth it. Sure its not your typical burger but the rice and chicken is amazing!! Their London Fog is tasty too great on a cold day. Great anyday! I shouldn't get to much into their brownie but lets just say its tasty! The atmosphere is nice. Relaxed music playing and the staff are friendly. Its small but a reasonable size to move around in. Came by for lunch a few days ago. Initially wanted to try the Rueben sandwich but they didn't have any smoked meat. So I went with a Tonkatsu bento box while my gf went with the Karaage bento box. Unique system where everybody picks up a menu by themselves, lines up to order and pay at the counter. For dine-in you get a number and seat yourself. If you want water, you can pour yourself a cup at the pickup area. When your food is ready, they call your number and you pick up the food at the front. After you are done your meal, pick up your dishes and drop them off in a tub by the kitchen on a metal rack. The food is solid, nothing amazing but will do the trick. I prefer their curries more since I love Japanese curry and they are probably a better bang for your buck. The pork was crispy and went great with the Tonkatsu sauce. I found their salad dressing to be lighter than other places, but that could be a consistency thing. The karaage was nice and flavorful, real chunks of juicy chicken. Probably one of the best I've had in the city and dipped in the Tonkatsu sauce it was divine. TL:DR- Get a Japanese curry dish of some sort and you won't be disappointed. Japanese curry is much milder than regular curry, sweeter and is more like a gravy than a curry. read more

Its honestly hit and miss. I've been twice now and I think the first time was a better experience. This time I felt the wait staff was very rushed and busy and they didnt check on us. Having to flag them down a few times. We were told when we arrived the time we were suppose to leave by which made me feel rushed right off the bat. I ordered the all you can eat brunch and they took the checklist away without asking if I was done with it after I ordered (I was not... I wanted ice cream). Was visiting an office nearby while in town for business, and when it was time to break for lunch, I pulled out my trusty Yelp app and found that Redheads was a couple of blocks away. When I left the office, I was asked if I was in need of assistance for restaurant reco's and I said I already had a place in mind. Entering Readheads, the layout is like a cafe. And as it was after the lunch rush, only a few tables were occupied and it looked like everyone was enjoying a Katsu lunch. I, too, opted for the Katsu, with an egg. Delicious! The curry was very rich and flavourful, and the pork was not greasy at all! The egg was nicely poached, and placed on the side, to allow me to mix with the meal however I wished. While eating, another customer sat near me, and I saw the sushi she ordered was a generous size and looked really good, but I was certainly too full to try sushi during this visit! But although I was full, I had also ordered a matcha "donut" when I ordered my lunch, so of course I had to indulge. Upon tasting, it was really the texture of a madeleine. Good, but lacked the matcha flavour somewhat, but good enough to pick up a couple (another Matcha and Nectarine) for a colleague to try. On my return to the office, I was asked where I went. There wasn't room and we didn't have a reservation so we were told to expect a 30-45 minute wait. No problem; seems very reasonable. We all walk out and stroll around downtown Calgary. We come back at 1:15pm. Waitress says, "Oh yeah, you group of five. Ok. You can squeeze in here (pointing to table for four) and now, no more buffet. Just regular menu." It was 1:15pm. Their own signage said Sunday was only "weekend brunch buffet" from 12-3pm. So, after waiting 45 minutes and soothing hungry kids, we couldn't get the lunch we had walked in for. No pickled veggie was included with the curry on the side which I thought was odd. For the California roll, the rice was on the dry side. It might have been because it was almost closing, so the rice may not have been as fresh so your experience may be very different. They have a lot of unique dishes that I'd love to try if I'm ever in Calgary again. Street parking is available nearby and is plentiful. read more
