was rather disappointing experience. took almost 45 mins to get our meal from the time we ordered it and when it arrived it was luke warm at best if not cold. The "baked" potato was microwaved vs actually baked And it was so cool that the butter I put on it didn't melt. Ordered a side of garlic prawns and got 3 small unflavored shrimp instead that were maybe an inch long if you stretched it out. my sons fries were undercooked (some weren't even golden, they were still potato white) And said some of them were kinda crunchy/stiff. I had the owners cut of prime rib and it was smaller than the last two times I had been to smugglers where I ordered a smaller cut (first mate) And it was cold, even the au jus was barely warm. Also probably the smallest Yorkshire pudding I've ever had there. Maybe 1/3 the size you use to get. We ordered desert and it took newly 30 mins for it to be brought out - my son's "warm" apple krisp was cold he said. i have been smugglers at least A dozen times in the last 3 years and more so in the last decade and this was by far the worst experience I have ever had. In both service and quality. As it stands I would not recommend - where as before I always raved about the smugglers inn. For a $400+ bill for myself and my 3 kids, I def expected way better quality, actual warm food and not have to wait a combined time of over an hour for service. It was also my son's birthday, and he found the experience very disappointing and said he never wants to go back. When we booked we said it was a birthday, we mentioned it was his birthday and the server didnt even say happy birthday to him. Oh and it wasn't even that busy when we got there... there was maybe 10 costumers when we arrived. I might try it again due to past visits being great. But another experience like tonight and I'll probably take my prime rib expeditions else where. I doubt my kids will ever go back as the complained how horrible it was the entire drive home. This was our first time back to Smuggler's after the ownership change so it's been awhile. We wanted to come try for awhile and finally we decided to celebrate out anniversary there. Parking was pretty full but we managed to snag a spot. The place was busy but not too loud. While the server did ask us if we were celebrating anything, there wasn't really anything done that made out time there special. We started with the Marrow and Escargot and shared a 12oz Prime Rib with lobster tail and Creme Brulee for dessert. The food was okay, not sure if it was worth the price of admission. Recently, Smuggler's started heavily promoting their Tuesday wing nights, where each wing is only $0.29. It's an incredible deal, the likes of which I haven't seen since 2015, so I decided to go with a couple of friends. We got there right at 5pm, which was a relief, because the restaurant was packed within minutes. We immediately ordered 40 wings in various flavors: soy garlic, jerk, hot sauce, and ginger, and we also got a couple of house lagers and mocktails. The good news is that the drinks were great! The pineapple rosemary mocktail was especially refreshing. Unfortunately, the wings were so overcooked that they were completely dry. There also wasn't enough sauce to mask the dryness. One bright spot was that the service was prompt and friendly! Overall, I might go back again but definitely not for wing night. You certainly get what you pay for with the price tag. read more

Ever since the new management that took over in 2023 the prime rib is no where close to the same. We came here for their prime rib and they also removed the salad bar. Their prime rib was 5/10 compared to what it use to be before. They also don't have offer gravy for mashed potatoes. They do have a good creamed horse radish. Their creme brûlée was great 9/10 very smooth and creamy one of the best I've had in Calgary when it comes to dessert. Wouldn't come back here for what they are known for. We were visiting friends in Calgary and decided to check this place out. First off, the food isn't bad but omg the service was non-existent. The entire restaurant was practically empty but it took almost an hour for our meals to arrive. I feel like this restaurant has the potential to bounce back as a top restaurant in Calgary BUT it needs to get an update to the restaurant as the place is dark and stuck in the 80s. The menu needs a refresh and the service staff need to improve their service skills and the customer experience. Introduce some promotional events or nostalgic items. Possibly the worst service we've ever received. Waited over an hour for our food. We even saw another table get up and leave because they waited even longer than we did. And once the food came out, most of the prime ribs were overcooked. Someone in our party ordered a baked potato and was offered condiments when they were already halfway done. We had also asked for gravy for the mashed potatoes twice. And by the time they finally brought it out, we were all done with our meal already. We were never offered a water refill either. I took five friends to Smugglers for lunch. The restaurant would not honour my gift cards because they were given to me before the restaurant changed ownership. Even though I asked the wait staff before we ordered if I could use these gift cards, the cards were denied when I tried to pay. I've repeatedly emailed the restaurant and asked to communicate with a manager or owner but have heard absolutely nothing. I've been told it's against the law to decline gift cards in Alberta. I think bad reviews and this terrible customer service is not a good look. Refusing gift cards at this time of year (Christmas) when people are buying and giving gift cards is also not a good look for a restaurant. Spent $43 for a 6-oz lacklustre prime rib plus mutant baked potato. $5 for a thimble-sized glass of OJ. At Carriage House Inn, we had an 8-oz tasty prime rib for $35 including much better accompaniments and professional service. So very disappointed. I don't take my honey out too often anymore. Cost and we are on a minimum pension. So going out is more special these days. I made a date night and reservation for smugglers on Sunday Prime beef buffet. We love our beef my wife is a 5th generation butcher, I met her at her family butcher shop in Vancouver 32 years ago. Arrived at 5:00 pm. "opening time" went straight to the buffet, got our first round. Good thing, because by 5:30 pm they were out of prime rib, only a brisket roast left, was informed that prime rib would not be ready for 2 hours. OMG. We paid our bill and left 10% which should only go the the chef at the cutting table. He was very apologetic. As we were leaving I took another glance at the meat counter, and what I saw was not prime rib but a rare brisket or cap from prime rib. Flavourless prime rib that was mostly fat, an au jus that was basically brownish water in colour and taste, vegetables that were wilted and soggy, horse radish that was runny and seemingly watered down, the baked potato also had no flavour with a sour cream that must to me have been low fat and flavourless which arrived cool and sliced in half without care and tasted like dirt, the bearnaise sauce joined the missing flavour train and added a lukewarm disgusting addition to the meal. Anything not mentioned in my, or my partners meal, was at best; flavourless. A lack of salt and pepper at the table goes to show that even a hint of flavour is discouraged at this place. Went there for the very first and LAST time for brunch. We were greeted at reception by the hostess who was putting a wet dirty mop together who then proceeded to bring us to our table. After that she brought us our cutlery while she never washed her hands. All the cutlery / glassware was dirty.... There was leftover food stuck to the plates. Service was non existent..... the table beside us kept going to the bar and waitress section and helped themselves to semi clean cutlery and condiments. The carver who served the prime rib also did the omelette station, there was a line up wrapping around the entire food area. The so called "Steak Soup" was probably the leftover gristle they picked out of the trash and covered it with gravy. My wife took 2 spoonfuls and was disgusted with it. The charcuterie section was a joke with only 2-3 options of cold cuts and 2 different cheeses. The salad section was the same pathetic option. There were plentiful desserts but you could tell they were still half frozen and dried out. Don't waste your money here like we did .... Lots of better brunches out there to enjoy. So I Don't think I will go for wings there ... but hope the brunch buffet with dessert bar sounds better . But how much desserts can you eat if you are diabetic ... Here's his comments & he was a cook for a restaurant previously too . Don't go to smugglers for wings. First they are terrible wings. Worst I have ever eaten, period. Second they charge 5.00 for a pop in a wine glass with no refills. Ordered the carrots and celery as a side. Got 3 carrot sticks about 3" long and only 1/4 sliced and 2 celery sticks same size. Worst meal ever. The wings are baked and not deep fried so they are soft. They don't dip them in the sauce, they just drizzle minimal amount of sauce on them so not tasty. I have eaten at Smuggler's Inn 3 times and will not go back! The food was good the first 2 times, but the service is terrible. The waitresses do not even stop by your table to ask if the meal is okay or if you would like anything else. Today, I returned and the food was mediocre, overcooked baked potato, prime rib and salad. The supervisor makes excuses for the servers, stating that they are closing the shift. The tables and floor are often dirty. Use your hard earned cash to attend one of the many restaurants who actually care about the experience of their customers and who serve consistently good food. read more

Just dined here tonight. Quite disappointing. I don't know where the beef comes from, but it was absolutely flavorless. I had beef ribs and, if not for the barbecue sauce, it wouldn't have tasted like anything. Desperately needed salt or seasoning of some sort because, obviously, it hadn't been seasoned before the barbecue sauce went on. My husband's prime rib was also flavorless. He said he'd never have it again if we ever go back, which I can't see happening any time soon. Unfortunately, nothing came with the ribs - no potato and no veggies - so the server plunked down a plate with ribs on it and nothing else. Oh, my mistake! It did have a little mini dish of HORRIBLE coleslaw. Inedible. No "plate appeal" whatsoever. I had ordered the side of creamed corn and, again, totally flavorless and desperately needing salt. We were attracted to this place based on previous (pre-Covid) reviews and its reputation. But our experience was terrible. Whatever glory this place used to have is clearly long gone. My wife ordered the crab cake for an appetizer, and I ordered the chowder. Her crab was mostly tasteless, though at least it was crunchy. But my chowder, though strong-tasting, was not seasoned well. It was not at all good. The chips that came with it were unpleasantly spicy and not tasty. My wife's salmon was mediocre, not bad, but definitely not worth the exorbitant price. My prime rib tasted like yesterday's grade B roast warmed over. And an extremely pricey plate considering how bland it was. About the only good thing I can say about the plate was the potato was well done. I asked for a lobster side and it was inedible! The meat was soft and "sandy" in texture, the taste was chemical and horrid. I had to spit out the one bite of it I took and told them I couldn't eat it. They took it away (and kudos to them for not charging me for it). But the bill was astonishingly high for a dinner that I could hardly choke down. I don't want this to be all negative, so I'll say that although the hostess was spiky and edgy with us, the serving staff were friendly and as helpful as possible under the circumstances. I understand they were closed for a while and re-opened after a long hiatus. It looks as though they never recovered from that time and are just cruising along with the inertia of past success. We won't be coming back, and won't be recommending this place to friends. read more

Haven't been there in a decade to be fair, but memory of the place was that of an upscale steak joint with rustic 70's flair. UNFORTUNATELY, What we experienced was that of an over-priced cafeteria. The Ambiance is gone, the food VERY lack luster, and the service was that of your corner pub. Ordered the prime rib (Rare), received an over cooked chunk of meat, a hard and dried out Yorkshire pudding, a bit of limp broccolini and some dried mash potatoes. We were stunned as table after table around us complained in some fashion as they left. Dried this, dried that, overcooked this, overcooked that. Again, I NEVER write reviews, but this was such a fall from grace for what was once such a prestigious place. ANY other steak joint is a better choice at this point. It is truly unfortunate. Heading in, some friends of the family, hearing we booked there, warned us of the experience, but I'm a believer in seeing for myself. Not unlike a movie review. Unfortunately it lived up to exactly what we had been warned. If you remember Smugglers from the 80's/90's and even early 2000's, This is NOT the same place. I heard about this place two years ago about getting an entree and it comes with unlimited soup and salad. This place reminded me of Olive Garden in the USA. But this is a much more fancier place then Olive Garden. As well the food quality was definitely much better than Olive Garden. I came here with a friend on a Sunday night. They were doing a Prime Rib special for $30. It came with unlimited soup and salad. To end it off, it came with dessert as well. The Prime Rib was 10 oz and it came with a side of mash potatoes and some greens. So the salads were really good salads. Everything were fresh. They have a good variety of options to choose from. The soups were amazing. There are three kinds to choose from each night. The night I went, they offered French Onion Soup, Steak Soup and Portuguese bean and sausage soup. Their artisan bread was amazing. I had one and it was an eye opener. I wanted to get more bread but I couldn't because I didn't want to fill myself up with carbs. Note the soup and salad bar is self serve. So you can go up as many times as you want. It is unlimited. The prime rib was really good quality prime rib. It was Alberta Beef and you can't get it for that price let alone the sides and salads. The prime rib was slightly on the bland side but that was probably because we opted out the extra $3 style for peppercorn or blue cheese. I am guessing if we paid the extra $3, it would be much more flavorful. The dessert was amazing. We got chocolate banana cake with ice cream on top. I had my prime rib medium rare and they cooked it perfectly. Service was awesome as well. I had a really great experience at Smugglers. I really liked their decor as well. It reminded me of Harry Potter. Note that you have to make a reservation before coming. This place is busy every day. read more

I used to go to Smuggler's back in the day and it was wonderful. However, we went for our anniversary in June. Took a sip of my drink and got a hair in my mouth. Looked in the glass and there were several hairs. Nasty! Sent it back and got a new one. Thankfully no hairs. I got the Neptune Asparagus with my steak. No flavour other than the asparagus. Not sure if there was any crab meat in there at all. My steak was teeny tiny - Not at all a 6 oz steak. I've never had one that shrank that much. My husband had a larger steak and he really enjoyed it. Over all, very disappointed and felt we wasted good money. We had to save up for this as it is rather expensive. read more

Four of us visited yesterday for a mid week lunch, all with high hopes after their long closure. I've been a die hard Smugglers fan since the mid 1970's, and have had a lot of special meals there. For this lunch, we ate in the old lounge area on the South side of the building. Two in our party of four had the 8 oz prime rib, and the other two (myself included) had the beef dip. The beef dip I would rate as merely OK - the meat was described as 'thinly sliced Certified Angus Beef prime rib'. I hoped this would be a good replacement for the old Smugglers prime rib sandwich, which was a thinner cut of their standard prime rib on garlic toast with au jus - perfect for lunch. Unfortunately when the beef dip arrived the meat was dry and well done, which is a shameful thing for a quality cut of prime rib. For the two prime rib diners, they both asked for rare prime rib, which the waiter enthusiastically agreed to. Sorry to say when their meals arrived, the prime rib was well done in both cases, much to their disappointment. When mentioned to the waiter, his new response was that all their prime rib was cooked to that level as a standard 'doneness'. Prime Rib? Well done? Now these meals are by no means cheap. If on placing the orders with the kitchen he found that he couldn't fulfill their requests, he should have come back and asked if they wanted to order something else. Being average Canadians, we didn't send the meals back - perhaps we should have, instead of just talking about how disappointing this was. I recall in the past that Smugglers used to slow cook all their prime rib roasts to rare, then they would put a carved slice back into the oven 'on demand' if someone in the party wanted medium or well done. Perhaps now, their ovens are timed so that the slow roasted prime rib is only taken out before their main dinner service, so our visit at lunch only had the last remaining well done or reheated meat from the day before. Just speculating here, but again, that should have been our call. Regardless, we were all disappointed with this visit. The service was prompt and attentive, but the the prime rib is the signature dish of this restaurant and we were both misled on ordering, and then misinformed as to why the prime rib arrived dry and overcooked. It's worth noting that the meals (and the two beers that our party had) was priced at the high end of the scale. I hope this is read by management, and I sincerely hope they can make necessary improvements. We were hoping to have an enjoyable family brunch (7 of us) but had a horrible brunch experience on Sunday April 21. Terrible slow service, eggs Benedict was cold and bland, the "basket of pastries" was non-existent, our coffee and mimosas weren't refilled and the coffee had grounds floating in it. Our waiter ignored us for almost an hour as we sat in an awful dark corner by a too hot fireplace, even with trying to flag him down. We thought well maybe the dessert bar would be good. Nope. No fruit to dip in the chocolate fountain except banana pieces. The pastry/dessert plates were 3/4 empty and what was there was stale and disappointing. Their pics on social media look nothing like the experience in real life. Do not waste your time here when there are so many other great brunch places that truly put the effort in. read more

I took my wife here on valentine's day for a date night. We waited for an hour and half and still didn't get our food. We stopped our server at one point and asked her where our food was and all she said is the kitchen is backed up. There was no apology she didn't come and check up on us or keep us informed or offer anything. In the end I saw the manager walked passed, and said we have had been waiting for over an hour for our food, and to cancel our food as we are leaving. He didn't even apologize or go and check to see if our food was ready. Oh dear- where to begin?! We travelled from Edmonton to celebrate a dear family friend's retirement. The entire evening went from bad to worse.- 6 of us and we waited45 minutes to get drinks and order. At the 1 1/2 hour mark, I had to go find a manager as the appetizers ( one a soup and one salad) had not arrived, one in our party had to leave for work and left without having any food. When it arrived, 75% of the order was wrong- either wrong potato, wrong doneness of meat and several were stone cold. My meal went back and came back still incorrect, I gave up at that point. I started to believe we were being punked and began looking for cameras when the Irish coffees arrived with only whiskey and a sugar rimmed glass- no coffee, no whipped cream- really? The waiter was about to leave until I asked about the rest of the drink and then it took me having to get up and find someone as another 15 minutes elapsed and they completed drinks had not materialized. I am not a hunter and gatherer and am unused to having repeatedly chase down service. The manager promised to come to our table and "make things right" but didn't appear and I had to ask the waitress about what his compensation plan was - turned out to be 3 glasses of wine, which was inadequate at best. It was a 31/2 hour ordeal and the service was consistently poor from the waitress, the bar, the kitchen, and the front of house- there are so many choices of places to go eat, choose wisely and give this one a swerve. read more

The service as awful, even though they had more than enough notice to plan for more staff that night, the service was unacceptable. We brought it up three separate times and the managers and staff didn't care at all. It was shocking and really sad to see a Calgary gem like this totally go in the wrong direction. We had a great experience at Smugglers! They were very accommodating of us with our 4 month old baby and his stroller! They were attentive and staff was great! Would have given 5 stars however I found my cut of prime rib was mostly fat(not the yummy prime rib kind) and bone. I had been craving Prime rib since before I was pregnant so I was so excited to finally get some the meat was delicious where it was but the cut wasn't great. We are from toronto and Its our first time coming here and I love it! Good price for quality food. I don't understand why yelp has only got 3.5 stars. Anyway. Please try the rib eye (smugglers cut). It's so good with medium rare. They cooked the beef perfectly and goes with with the reddish. They have house special reddish too But it's a bit strong for me. I also ordered bison to share. It goes very well with the blueberry sauce. It's so juicy that the bison flavor is well preserved inside the meat. We got $13 per person for salad bar. They have many kinds of appetizer. I like the seafood chowder soup. They have so much ingredients. The steak soup is a bit too salty for me tho. Overall, It's good!! Absolutely gorgeous. I was visiting from Toronto, We had a party of 8 The service, food, atmosphere, and price was all amazing!! I rarely give 5 stars... but this place definitely deserves it in my opinion. Steaks were very tasty and very well priced from what I'm used to paying in Toronto for the same type of resturant. Would recommend for big groups or small gatherings. Bill was $400 for 8 ppl which included a 30% tip. We were so full, we could hardly walk out of the resturant.
