I waited over 45 minutes for fried chicken. I ordered a three-piece and was charged for a four-piece. It was supposed to come with two sides I ordered mashed potatoes and green beans. I got no green beans. The food when they gave me the bag and I took it to the picnic table to eat it it was cold. I so no point in going back in because I was going to have to repackage the food to take it back inside and I most certainly was not going to wait another 45 minutes for a hot meal. read more

This meal was one of the best meals we had while in OBX this week. Upon arriving the staff was super friendly and on top of their game at a very crowded time of day. We ordered the fried flounder and fried shrimp plates. The flounder was PERFECT in every way. Crispy and perfectly seasoned & cooked. The hushpuppies were browned in all the right places. We also had the fried okra and coleslaw; both of which were absolutely delicious. The sweet tea was the perfect combination of sugar and tea. We stopped here for lunch on the way home from the Outer Banks. I ordered the chicken liver dinner. It came with instant potatoes,(I asked the waitress if potatoes were instant or home made, she lied to me) canned gravy, Tasteless frozen corn on the cob, and a nice fluffy biscuit with no butter. Chicken livers were overcooked but edible. My wife ordered a grilled chicken sandwich with french fries. Her dinner was edible, but she would not order it again. We were there at lunch time. I should have known by the cars in the parking lot that locals do not patronize this place. We both agreed that unless Robert Irvine with Restaurant Impossible teaches them how to cook, we will not be back. To bad. Nice location, attractive cafe. This place is tiny and full of surprises. Exactly what you would expect from the outside, small and quaint with only a handful of tables. Service was like your favorite aunt was making you something because you stopped by. My husband had BBQ, greens and Mac and cheese which came with hush puppies. The BBQ was perfect, the greens were some of the best he's ever had and the hush puppies outshined all of the hush puppies we had had during our getaway in the OBX. I had a burger which was unexpected tasty and juicy on a brioche bun (surprised me with that bun!). The drinks were served in mason jars! It was alllll perfect and not shockingly the place had every table full before 12. We will absolutely be sure to include this as a must have on all trips to the OBX. read more

We just stopped here tonight after visiting the nearby water park all day with four 11-13 year old girls. We are all so glad we stopped. The food was delicious and so many wonderful options. It is true Southern food served with southern charm from the staff. The restaurant is nothing fancy but clean and cozy. We loved it! We went in wearing our outfits from the park and were welcomed! We felt like we were eating at a family members house. Our table enjoyed the Cajun salmon special, fried chicken, shrimp and flounder. The sweet tea was just freshly made, homemade desserts and wine and drinks available too. We wish they were closer to our rental house in Duck as we would go again tomorrow! Any visitor to obx must check it out- gives you delicious southern food, local place and let's the kids hear people with southern accents... awesome place! read more

They had a charming atmosphere and our waitress was so pleasant. My catfish special was incredible and well done, and my boyfriend's fried chicken livers were well enjoyed. It was a great point to stop at to just get out of traffic and enjoy some really solid food for a little bit. Definitely going back and would recommend. :-) read more

This restaurant Is a hidden gem! It is about 3 miles before Wright Brothers Bridge heading into the OBX. It is on the left side of road just past H2OBX Water Park. We LOVE the quaint atmosphere, the service, prices and most of all FOOD! NO ONE makes better chicken liver dinner of all the places we have ever eaten. And they have a "bottomless" Mason jar they serve their beverages in. No one ever fails to meet the high standard of service or food. The only thing we haven't tried is breakfast but I cannot imagine it, too, meets their high standard of service, price and good quality/quantity. Worth the short drive for us from KDH for lunch. read more

This is a delightful little restaurant not far from OBX, maybe 5 minutes from the bridge. We stopped there for the first time yesterday. I had fried flounder, cole slaw, and the beans, all delicious. I've been wanting to try this restaurant for a couple of years, and this trip we were able to fit it in. We went to lunch here. Everyone was very friendly, with great customer service all the way around. This restaurant is very small and country-like--picture vinyl tablecloths and wooden chairs. While the décor was nothing to write home about, everything did seem very clean. The biggest drawback here, to me, was the extremely limited menu. If you've reviewed the menu online, you've reviewed the WHOLE menu. I ordered the popcorn shrimp with fries and coleslaw, and my mother ordered a two-piece dark chicken dinner with slaw and mashed potatoes. My food was fairly good--it was served on attractive dinnerware and was tasty. The only improvement on my meal that could have been made would be better fries; the ones I received were pretty soft. My mom also enjoyed her meal, but was disappointed to receive three drumsticks instead of a drumstick and thigh. We guessed they must have run out of thighs, hence the extra chicken leg, but it would have been nice if someone had communicated that to us. All in all, an a-ok place to dine in the OBX if you're looking for a laidback, non-pretentious meal and don't need a lot of choices. read more

I think Simply Southern Kitchen served up the best meal of our vacation, so far at least. The flounder was delicious -- we enjoyed this greatly. The fried chicken was really nice, as well, and my wife's jambalaya special, awesome. This is a nice little place in an unassuming building set off from town. It kind of looked like a tourist trap from the outside, but the people inside take their food seriously. I understand that Simply Southern has a solid reputation locally for great BBQ, so we will be back to try that as well. read more

Very friendly staff, delicious food. Saw the good reviews, so we drove out while staying in Kill Devil Hills and it was worth it. I had the lunch special--Rainbow Trout fried to perfection with toasted almonds sprinkled on top, hush puppies with honey butter and southern greens on the side. Price-wise this was more than $10 but almost everything else on the menu looked to be less than that. My son had the kid's menu popcorn shrimp and he ate every last shrimp and french fry on his plate, it was that tasty. I thought the portion was a very nice size and perfect for his age (they didn't skimp but it wasn't too much either). Dessert was strawberry pound cake, made from the strawberry farm right next door. I wish our bellies had enough room to try all the desserts they had to offer. Next time we are in the outer banks, we are definitely swinging through again. read more

Salisbury Steak with mashed potatoes is tasty, but the corn on the cob and the biscuit leave much to be desired (even when doused in the honey butter, which is good but tastes like the kind you buy at the grocery store). Flounder and tartar sauce are both good, but the green beans are average and the mac and cheese looks and tastes like the kind in a TV dinner. Nothing wrong with this place, but my expectation for a restaurant with a 5-star rating on Yelp is "change your life" and "smack your momma" good, and this place served just average, down home, county cooking. read more

Almost drove by it. Breakfast sandwiches on the way off the island. Cute decor, super friendly staff. We then enjoyed the BEST breakfast sandwich I have ever had! I am a local and live right around the corner. This was my third visit this season. First I stand at the counter for 5 minutes to place a to go order and wasn't even acknowledged. Then a dine in customer came behind me to pay and someone came right out, acknowledged the customer, took his money and walked away. A couple minutes later, Kayla came and took my order. She was pleasant, and had great customer service. I ordered the fried chicken, paid and was told the wait would be 15 minutes. Ok, I told her I was going to sit in my car. 15 min later, I came back inside, no one at the front so I sat on the waiting benches. Someone came from the back and said they didn't have white meat. Back and forth occurred as I don't eat dark meat so she went back to the back, came back and said they had legs, thighs and breasts. Breasts are white meat so I said give me two breasts and a thigh. Came back, we have one breast left. She then said you want thighs and a leg. At this point I changed my order to fried shrimp fries and collards. Kayla was so apologetic. I sat back on the bench with a nice older lady who stated she had been waiting thirty minutes for two burgers.... My food came out very quickly, I opened to check and it was slaw and collards, no fries. My last experience here was a wrong to go order. I will NEVER return here as the only personable person in the place as Kayla. read more

This is a wonderful little restaurant with above average food and the atmosphere is friendly and fun. I ordered the BLT with French fries. The sandwich had the right amount of crispy bacon and the fries were cooked perfectly. My aunt ordered the special which was corned beef and cabbage. It came with red skin potatoes and a biscuit. She said the cabbage was cooked just right - not over-cooked as so often cabbage is. The meat and potatoes were also tasty. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful and it didn't take much for her to talk us into trying dessert. I really enjoyed the banana pudding, one of my all time favorite desserts. I will definitely be stopping here again when I'm either on the way to or coming from Nags Head. read more
