Not the most impressive experience with Simply Indian. My masters program booked a large dinner party here on a Thursday night and we were not very satisfied with the food or service. While we had an awesome evening, not much of that was attributed to the restaurant. Simply Indian's very cramped and it seems like they were forcing availability where there isn't any. We had almost 30 people in the restaurant and the employees were still trying to seat other people when they really should have reserved the restaurant for just our party. The biggest issue was the pricing however. It was almost £25 for a very small curry, palm-sized portion of rice, and a dismal lental side. Other sides were promised but never delivered. It just seemed absolutely ridiculous the pay that much for hardly any food. The service overall was pretty good and they tried to be accommodating, but I was expecting a lot more.

My friends and I stopped by Simply Indian on vacation after hearing great things about the Indian food on offer in London. We were seated quickly upon entering the establishment, but the table next to us was filled with drunk, extremely loud patrons, at least ten or twelve. Their table was filled with empty bottles of booze and they were yelling, singing, and blasting music out of a shitty Bluetooth speaker placed on the table. By far the worst restaurant patrons I've ever seen anywhere. It's not SI's fault at all, but I really need to vent after such a shocking display of contempt for others. Luckily they left afer about fifteen minutes, but it was a painful time while it lasted. Anyway. We quickly got our papadum after sitting down and it, and especially the sauces with which it was served, were amazing. The salsa (whose name I do not know) was phenomenal, and the chutney was better than any other I've ever had. But once receiving it, we were left hanging for a good ten or fifteen minutes before our orders were taken. We were considering leaving, but our food came out only five minutes later, and it was well worth the wait. I got chicken biryani, probably my favorite Indian dish, and it beat even the delicious biryani found in my local Indian place back home. A friend got the Southern Thali and I think he won the night. The assortment of food that came with it was broad, and all of it was yummy. A little spicier than I was prepared for, but it was overall well-balanced and left me wanting a portion of my own. The table also got some jhalfrezi. I'd never heard of the dish before, but the description sounded appetizing so we took a chance and, lo and behold, it was wonderful. Again, spicier than I was expecting, but it was something fundamentally different than Indian food I was familiar with. I've never noticed it on any menu before, but I'll be sure to look for it when I get back home! We were surprised with a dessert menu and, at a friend's strong suggestion, got the carrot fudge with mango ice cream. Fantastic decision. At risk of sounding repetitive, it was something totally new to me and borderline indescribable. It tasted carrot-like, but smoother and sweeter. I'll echo that recommendation. Just get it. Our waiter actually brought one out without even taking our order, he was that sure we'd like it! Afterwards, he came out again and had a chat about the chef's background and the philosophy of the food he had prepared for us. Overall, despite the rocky start to the night, the food and service were phenomenal. It's sort of hidden in a back corner, but if you find yourself in the neighborhood, Simple Indian is absolutely worth a visit.

Under pressure from the owner, I was asked to leave a review. Normally I refuse to leave a negative review like this, but since he insisted, I suppose I must. I always like to start with 5 stars. But this place... ugh! -1 for ambience and terrible seating. The chairs were old and felt like we might fall through. The old music didn't match the Indian theme. And the lighting is awful! -1 for the waiter who had no idea what was on the menu or anything about it. -1 for the aggressive owner who thrust his card with TripAdvisor, Yelp, and Facebook and insisted we give him a good review. -1 for the owner offering 10 percent off your bill through yelp for checking in. But when we went to use it he asked "Did you leave a review??" When I answered Yes, he demanded to see my phone and read the review. It was very confrontational. -1 for not giving us the 10 percent off after we had to ask for it again. Giving us 5% off and thinking we wouldn't check his math. Sadly, there isn't a 0 stars. I wanted to like this place. We walked for 45 minutes to get there. But I just couldn't. The food wasn't that great.

I guess Ling T. saw us walk in at 22 hours or the couple after us. Either way, there was a large group of soccer players about 19-24 being overly loud, chaotic, unruly and loud again while drinking in the corner of the restaurant. I'm amazed the table top that was on date night didn't leave sooner. Either way the dishes and prices were more than enough for me to note: 1) It's worth returning 2) The new menu's are needed 3) liquor is BYOB 4) The Mix grill was done quite nicely 5) I tried new things and although I won't order the top left chicken dish again - there was nothing wrong with it but more heat than needed. I'm from Louisiana which includes New Orleans and all the creole/cajun and deep south spiciness any one can handle YET... I don't like spice for the sake of heat. This could have been just as good a few notches down on the scale of measuring heat/spice. 6) the samosa dip was nice. Sweet and Spicy - just right. 7) The onions on the mix grill were excellent. 8) Yelp 10% off check in offer hit the right spot 9) Location is nice as it's close enough to the Tower 10) The place is small as in tight on space but clean. The restroom was spotless 11) No ice 12) Naan even with lamb was great 13) You must order an entree if you're ordering. 14) Krysten P wrote her review as directed in exchange for the 10% off. IT's hiliarious as one friend stated...that's not how this is supposed to work. I didn't mind as I liked the place 15) Late hours 16) The buffet used to exist, lunch buffet once existed, lower prices were an old time staple and currently - you can get all but a few dishes for $10. 17) Pizza place next door is quite nice. And a good price for take away.

Garlic naan, Kashmiri Lamb Rogan and Hyderabadi Kali Mirch

Cozy decor, helpful staff and delicately balanced cuisine. Ordered the Hyderabadi Kali Mirch chicken, Kashmiri Lamb Rogan, garlic naan and Bombay chai tea. Each was distinctive and flavorful. The chai had a nice pronounced spice to it; it cut the rich sauces nicely. Very reasonably priced too. This was a promising introduction to Indian cuisine in London!

Good location (steps from hotel) and minutes from Borough Market. Great service and ambiance, biryani and samosas were delicious!

Prior to becoming a restaurant it was an actual library, and they include the story and imagery to show it's history. I love that they have kept the essence with the library shelving and books.. your check even comes in a book. The food and service here were exquisite.. it felt improper to take out my phone or I would have more photos to show, but I did take a few at dessert time. The staff was friendly and helpful in providing recommendations. The wine and cocktail lists were plentiful. They also had a nice tea list, some beer options, and plenty of non-alcoholic spritzers (as was pretty common in London). The menu has a selection of meals from another chef, for those who can't handle even the mild heat of Indian cuisine. There is not a kids menu and as expected with Indian food, most of the food has a kick to it. I ordered tandoori chicken and a side of rice for my children, and they provided a tomato sauce (similar to a tikka masala sauce) for the kids to dip into; my son enjoyed the cucumber yogurt sauce to cut the bite of the spice. The food was spectacular. I had a scallops dish as a starter, then the lamb curry which was wonderful. My husband had the prawns with vermicelli, and my in-laws both had a chicken dish. We also enjoyed a selection of naans. We all polished off our plates with ease, and continued into after dinner drinks and dessert. The bathrooms here are downstairs in an area seemingly without heat.. bc it was freezing in there!! But there are additional seating areas as well. This is a popular place for business meals, and gatherings. I highly recommend trying out this establishment for yourself.

We were mostly nervous that it was going to be a much nicer restaurant that we were dressed for (which was very casual and sweaty after a mid-June day walking all over London), but despite the white tablecloths and general fancier feeling of the inside of the restaurant, we were not made to feel out of place. The outside and signage are more low-key/casual looking so you need to be looking for it too, Cafe Ishaq won't be jumping out at you. It was empty of customers when we entered, around 7pm, so we were seated immediately. Cold waters were ordered all around, as well as several bottles of wine to share amongst the many of us. Prices are shockingly decent, but then there is a sort of hidden service fee (a percentage of the bill) added on at the end, much like in the US when some places have an automatic tip added on for parties over a certain number of people. This was just a percentage added to every bill. Like...just make the prices what they are gonna be...that it one of the good things about Europe, that taxes are included in the price and people are paid a better wage so tipping is not often done. Still, you get generous helpings of food for the price. If I recall (I forgot to take a picture/take note of what I ordered...and we all ended up sharing everything amongst the 7 of us) I got the Saag Paneer, which is my Indian restaurant go-to because YUM. And it was yummy! I also got an order of the Keema Naan to share, which was soggy, but flavorful. We all enjoyed our meal here. The food was delicious, and we were never once rushed. Service got a little slow after food was delivered and getting our checks to pay and leave was a minor ordeal. We tried to be clear about whether and how checks would/could be split, but it did not happen correctly. It wasn't too terribly over-the-top pricey that we couldn't manage and pay each other back over the rest of the time in London. If you want low-key, unhurried, and tasty Indian food, this is a good place to get it. I am not sure I would say you should go out of your way to come here, but if you were in the area, keep it on your radar.
