This summer, we hired Simple Outdoor Living as designer and contractor to renovate our front and back yards. The experience was outstanding. The owner, Bryan, was a real pleasure to work with in the design phase. As this was our first time renovating exterior space, we had some requirements in mind but weren't sure about all the details. Bryan patiently worked with us to flesh out ideas, going through several revisions until we had arrived at a satisfactory design, complete with beautiful computer renderings from all possible angles depicting the final outcome. Having arrived at a design, we had the option of going with SOL as contractor, or hiring a third party contractor. We did the due diligence of getting quotes from two other contractors, and found that SOL's quote was entirely reasonable. Give the positive experience so far, we decided to hire SOL for the contract. The home renovation experience often turns sour when the process moves from the front desk to actual work on site, and we are delighted to report that this was NOT the case with Simple Outdoor Living. The outstanding experience continued with Coleman, our project manager. Coleman ran a tight ship, starting the project on time and finishing on time, and his crew did great work. He visited the work site every single day, solved problems that came up, and made sure that work is of high quality and inline with our expectations. What we liked about Coleman the most is how communicative he is, a quality that is critical for a good contractor. He patiently answered the myriad questions we had for him, and on the rare occasion when we pointed out issues, he quickly rectified them. We also appreciate Ernesto, the foreman. He and his crew not only worked hard but also showed a great eye for detail. As detail-oriented customers ourselves, we especially appreciate the fact that in every area of work requiring precision, such as the positioning of drain holes, the spacing of planters, the shaping of bender boards, etc, Ernesto made sure that he had our verbal approval before getting to work. We engaged Simple Outdoor Living for landscape design work after sifting through Yelp reviews and meeting with 3 possible vendors. We felt good about all three vendors, but Bryan from SOL stood out due to his capable but easy-going manner. Hi friendly and laid-back way made it easy to talk through - and make changes to - our ideas without any pressure. Bryan and Allen from SOL worked together on our design. Even with the two of them communication was seamless and smooth - nothing "got dropped" along the way. We had several meetings - both in person and virtually. The virtual meetings with screen sharing were a big plus - allow for quicker turn-around on design work rather than needing to arrange for a site visit or a drive to their office. Both Bryan and Allen were both patient with our many questions and making many changes from the initial design. We never felt rushed or pressured into a decision. The design deliverables were very helpful in visualizing our plan. From the start Bryan understood that we would be looking for bids for the work to be done by multiple vendors. He was fine with that - and actually encouraged it! SOL wasn't the cheapest option for the design work, but we are very happy with the resulting design and are impressed with their professionalism. We were looking to have our front yard landscaped but needed a lot of help in visualizing what we wanted. Bryan and Allen came out to talk to us, take measurements and photos and get a read on what we would want. A couple of days later Allen sent us "preliminary " drawings and we were blown away. Simple Outdoor Living redesigned our front patio area and our backyard. my husband and I are very happy with the results. Within a few weeks they installed three new systems in our backyard: drainage, automatic drip irrigation and electrical. Their quick and efficient demolition team removed much dirt and leveled our backyard. They installed a "top notch" retaining wall and fence, flagstones, cement patio and decorative gravel. They also quickly planted a new succulent garden, and three trees. During the project they worked with our Homeowners Association and neighbors (for our adjoining fence). They respected our personal preferences in choice of color, style and plants. The project included a large variety of skills, resources, equipment and talents. SOL sends out teams for each different aspect of the work and they come early, wear uniforms, work hard and finish their job quickly and efficiently. As a landscape professional, it is hard to come across good designers, and SOL is the perfect company for this. Every time I need help with concepts or 3-D renderings for my landscape projects, I rely on them for support. I've referred several of my customers to them and they've all been very satisfied with SOL. If they are satisfied, I am satisfied. Last spring I started my calling landscape contractors for bids to remodel my front/back yard. They advised that I get a landscape design. I contacted Simple Outdoor Living and engaged then to provide a design. They wanted full payment up-front which I knew was a "red flag" but moved forward. I got the design and again started my search for contractors. Contractors advised me the design was not viable in some areas of the yard. I contacted Simple Outdoor Living and asked them to correct this. They insisted there design was viable and would refer me to contractors well known to them that could work with the design. They did refer contractors to me and I hired one. Shortly after this contractor started I found out the contractor barely knew Simple Outdoor Living. Throughout the job many design changes had to be made by the contractor and me. The contractor mentioned one day he felt like he was doing Simple Outdoor Living's job. We worked with Bryan and Enrique before we embarked on an exterior renovation (front yard and backyard) project that encapsulated elements for hardscape, softs-cape and exterior surface for the house. Many times previously, we had discussed ideas for exterior renovation with contractors before, but one thing was always missing and that was the design element of understanding the scope/scale of the project as well as the aesthetics. This is where it was so helpful to work with Bryan and his team from Simple Outdoor Living. To be honest, I was initially a little skeptical about the added value from scoping out the design elements, but it became very clear when we saw the 3D plans and presentation on how all the pieces fit in together. What really impressed me the most about Bryan and Enrique: 1. Their vision for designing an affordable plan for the house. Our house is a late 1970's build and needs love and care for the exterior, and the team was able to immediately suggest fixes that will meaningfully improve the curb appeal and deriving value from the space. 2. Everything is customized to the client's needs. I can't stress how important this is. Many times during the design process, it is possible to take an extravagant view of the upgrades and add a lot of things, which ultimately would break the budget, and essentially be unreasonable (and a waste of your time).
