Had a perfect day wine tasting on this rainy day. The outdoor tables were all covered with big umbrellas as well as heat lamps at each table. We were greeted warmly by their staff. Lisa was our host and she could not have been nicer. Lisa is well educated with all of the wines Simi offers. And the pizza....OMG, it was absolutely scrumptious- hats off to the chef! So many of the wines we tasted were great- I especially fell for their Brut Rose bubbly. As were were leaving with the wines we purchased, Lisa handed us each a mini box of delicious sweet bites. I usually visit Simi on a hot weather day as the beautiful redwoods provide much shade- they also provided some protection in the rain today. What a wonderful afternoon we enjoyed at Simi! read more

Located just a few blocks north of downtown Healdsburg, the building, surrounded by trees, is nice, but not as scenic as other Sonoma wineries. Although they do have picnic area, I would picnic at other wineries. On the weekends, the greeter, who welcomes you at the door, could speak Japanese! As for their wine, I consider Simi's 2004 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($27) to be a nice cheaper alternative to Silver Oak's 2002 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ($60). Silver Oak felt more complex, but Simi was pretty good too. PRICE: I believe Simi's reserves are not sold outside of their winery, but their regular Cab is sold at Costco and Trader Joe's. My husband and I had a great tasting at Simi Winery. Nadine was our tasting guide and she was knowledgeable, kind, and not pushy. The fact that she never once pressured us to become wine club members is one of the main reasons we decided to sign up for the membership. She walked us through each wine, let us take our time, and shared with us some of her favorite local spots/recommendations. It was a great experience and we purchased their sparkling wine, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay. If we ever come back to the area, we'd love to bring our friends and family to Simi to experience a non-pretentious, accessible tasting experience. Your tasting fee is waved if you buy a few bottles, but even if you don't buy bottles I think the tasting was around $20 bucks (on the low end) so it's definitely a must try! read more

We got the info for this winery tour from a chamber of commerce. One of the oldest wineries in Sonoma. Our tour guide, Michael, was distracted, seemed high or had too much of their product. He was on his phone a lot, taking pictures for a friend. Couldn't remember words and generally fumbling around. The tour was not worth the $30 each. The wine tasting at the end was underwhelming as Michael poured a sample and disappeared, then came and poured the second and third before in the same manner. No interaction or really explaining the wines we were tasting. It was the most disappointing, most expensive tour/tasting we've been on. We have been on better tours in the area that were free. read more

This place is great! A pleasant change of pace from some of the wineries you might visit. Heavily wooded with a fountain and shade, this is a great place to visit in the middle of the day if it's hot outside. The wine was great but the food and service was even better, with lots of safety measures in place for Covid. These guys are clearly working hard to ensure a safe environment for their guests. I think if there was one thing I'd wish was different was their use of bottled water. Instead of filtered tap water, they provide plastic water bottles. They even poured out bottled water for a dog! In a time when plastic use is so rampant and damaging for the environment, I wish they'd switch to using less plastic. But overall, a great experience. read more

I didn't much info on where he grapes came from, taste, or much info. I was here before and had an excellent pourer who taught my husband and I so much about wine, location of grapes, etc. I bought a $100 bottle of wine and had a coupon for 20% off. So let me start by saying, use the Groupon! I think we paid somewhere around $15 for two flights of four wines, two (kinda cheap looking) souvenir glasses, and a tour. We didn't actually make the tour because we got there at 4 and the place closes at 5, but the tasting alone was a fantastic deal. The highlight, in my sweets obsessed mind, was the dessert wines. I was quite tempted to purchase a bottle of wine from here, but they were all good and I couldn't decide on just one. =\ But I did get a little souvenir magnet with the name of the winery on it! One of our other yelp friends kept telling us about this riesling wine that is in a chocolate cup! He made it sound sooooo good! Sadly, they ran out of the chocolate cup samples for the tastings and only had the sets for sale. Simi Winery holds the dubious distinction of being the only place I've ever stopped midway through a tasting to tell the winery worker "please don't take this as disrespect but I don't like the taste of your red wines". Each sip provoked in me a pucker, a squinty eye, and a raised eyebrow: my beautiful "sour face" look. Continual references were made to the uber-dryness of these reds but the server pointed to intense oakiness as the likely cause of my distaste. He pointed me to a 2012 next and I found it far better than the 2011, though still very dry and still very oaky. Simi, I'd conclude, is not the wine for me. Simi Winery is the oldest of the Alexander Valley wineries and the only winery I've ever visited which touts their kegged wines and growlers. The tasting room sits in what's basically a very well-stocked gift shop with a pleasant, tree-shaded, adjoining outdoor patio. The whole place feels a bit artless and pedestrian, the opposite of almost anyplace you might find in Napa but it's clean and the patio is a nice place to relax for a bit. (In general, Alexander Valley wineries are not the fantasy chateaus of their Napa Valley brethren). On "Taste Alexander Valley" weekend Simi Winery is popular, owing to its mid-point location amongst participating wineries. I didn't find much to get excited about here but being a little wine-high and finding a perfect present for myself in the gift shop prevented it from being a total bomb. If you like your red wine bone dry and cannot get enough oak you'll like Simi wines. If you're not looking for "fancy", want to pickup some unique gifts, or just relax on an outdoor patio you might also enjoy a stop at Simi Winery. read more

Our second stop in our Sonoma Valley wine tasting visit was to Simi. The wine tasting room is located in a rustic setting with many trees on the property. The tasting area is on one side of the room while the other side has gifts and food items. The tasting menu is 5 core wines for $10 and 5 core and Winemakers selections for $15. Simi is part of the Visa Signature program and the offer provides 2 wines choices from the core section. A bonus pour of a Cabernet was also provided. Our pourer was friendly and provided insights on Simi's wines. If you like dessert wines, they have a delicious late harvest Chardonnay and late harvest Riesling. We went on a Wednesday and even took the tour which I totally recommend to do its only $10 and it takes about 45 minutes to do but I learned a lot and drank some good wine at the end. Today we had our tasting and lunch, it was such a great day. Lisa was our server. She was new to pouring but is a wine educator and in non COVID circumstances works on the hospitality side for reps and other business partners. Lisa was amazing, extremely knowledgeable and taught us some new interesting wine facts! Compliments to the chef as well, we had a delicious Caesar salad along with salmon, prosciutto, and turkey open face sandwiches. We got a wine-tasting coupon to Simi from the hotel we were staying at in Santa Rosa, so we decided to check them out. There was a really cute grandma-looking woman greeting us at the door, welcoming us to try their olive oil dipping sauces. I got so hooked, I purchased the truffle oil spray for a mere $5! Quite the steal! We then proceeded to the wine, and while the property was really cute, as was the tasting room, I just felt it was a bit touristy somehow. Like the tasting fees were pretty strict and formal, and even though this was one of the oldest wineries in the area, it didn't have that informal, down-home charm (due to the formalities with the tasting fees). Since I didn't love the few wines I picked out to try with my coupon, I gave up on tasting others, and didn't walk away loving anything (probably due to the fact that I couldn't try others without paying additional fees). I really wanted to like this place, but it unfortunately did not meet my expectations. I had purchased their Cab Sauv at the store before and enopjoyed it, but after having five tastes of their "exclusive wines," I wish I had just stuck with that. I had two whites, a rose, and two reds. None stuck out to me as exciting, and I found myself just ready for the tasting to be over so we could head out to join our friends. My friend bought a bottle and after being rung up commented "how great it is that tasting fees are comped when bottles are purchased," the tasting attendant said "oh, no, we charged you $10 for that." Simi is Something Special in Sonoma Before talking about the excellent wines at Simi, I first have to say that the staff in the visitor center are some of the friendliest people that I have met in the wine country. These individuals are truly knowledgeable, not only about Simi wines, but about Sonoma County wines in general. They aren't afraid to recommend their own favorite wineries, wines and winemakers. The staff always have great restaurant recommendations as well. It is quite clear that the people who work at Simi love their jobs and love being in such a wonderful industry. They also enjoy sharing their passion with visitors. Then there are the wines. . .Simi's Reserve Cabernets are consistently excellent. My personal favorites are the 1997, 2000 and 2001. They also produce a wonderful Chardonnay, which has won several accolades from critics. The winery itself is warm and inviting and it blends in well with the beautiful redwoods that surround it. Simi's chef, Eric Lee, is a master in the kitchen. I have attended several winery events and Chef Lee always presents excellent food to pair with Simi's broad selection of wines. We were very disappointed with our experience from beginning to end. It was nothing like our initial visit back in June 2021 which led to our joining the wine club. Making the reservation was difficult to begin with, since nobody answers the phone in the tasting room. I then emailed customer service and was told to call the tasting room for reservations. After calling multiple times on different days, I was finally able to speak to someone. They sounded annoyed with my request for a reservation and told me that it's best to do it online. I explained to them that I already tried to book online (while logged into our member account) but the online system would charge for 5 people even though we as members should have 4 tastings included and should only be charged for 1 tasting. I also said I wanted to make sure we could get a table for 9 (5 adults tasting and 4 children who would be eating lunch with us). The staff member supposedly booked the reservation and confirmed that we could pick up our September wine shipment when we were to visit. When we arrived at the winery, no table had been prepared for us, and we were told our reservation was only for 6 despite my phone call with the tasting room earlier that week confirming a table for 9. We ended up pulling tables together and setting up a table for 9. We were misled into believing we would have food pairings as the Simi website states we would have "culinary compliments" with our wine. We did not realize this just meant popcorn and bagged brownies to go. We had planned to order food anyway since we had children in our group. Despite ordering food right away, it took about an hour and a half to arrive at our table and took a while for our whole order to arrive. Also after being seated for an hour, we still had only tasted the first wine on the tasting menu. We tried to be very patient but when the food finally arrived, we were very irritated that we were at a winery eating food without any wine. We finally received the rest of the 3 tastings all at once so we would not have to wait anymore. When we asked for extra bread to accompany our meatball orders, we were told they had run out of bread. At this point, we just wanted to leave but still had 2 more pizzas (we ordered 2 hours ago) which we still had to wait for. It not only took a while for us to get any food but it also took a long time for the entire order to come out. When we were done, we went up to the visitor's center to close out and pick up our September shipment. The staff could not find our account in the pickup binder or the computer system (even though I received an email verifying my account and the Simi website has my credit card info online). They said the only way they could confirm our membership was by contacting a person named Paul who only works on the weekdays. At this point, we were beyond frustrated and told them to just cancel our membership. They said they couldn't even do that unless we contacted Paul, again only during weekdays. I do have to mention Nadine and Kazumi who brought our food and wine were great and apologized for the botched visit. I recognize there is only so much they can do within a dysfunctional system. We had high hopes for this winery as the service was exceptional when we visited back in June. The wines are excellent and reasonably priced as well. Unfortunately, they are now suffering from a staffing shortage, a poorly managed kitchen, and a disorganized wine club. Perhaps this is due to a recent change in management. read more

When we first got here, we were a bit confused as to where the entrance was is not really near where you park. We parked in the lot and then had to walk onto the sidewalk along the highway to find the "entrance." Aside from this, I do have to say that the grounds this place is built on is nice and picturesque with their water fountain and all the trees surrounding. As for the actual tastings, this place is good in that if you don't know what kinds of wines you like, they definitely have a nice variety to choose from. We went to Healdsburg looking for a relaxing day away from the city, and the next day the one negative part on our trip we couldn't stop talking about was our wine-tasting at Simi. In short, my wife and I felt like all they wanted to do was sell us a wine club membership and use the tasting as an opportunity to "trap" us into listening to the salesperson. Here are all the "salesey" things our salesperson did on our $15 tasting where we got to taste 8 wines. - Ask if we wanted to join the wine club and explain it to us (no problem... I get it - you all have to make money) - Tell us that it is like no other wine club in wine country (ok... why?) - Tell us about the partnerships they have with other wine clubs and the free tastings you get (got it) - Tell us that the wine tour at Simi is the "best in the world" (well... I don't know about that, but... ok) - Put the membership signup form ON TOP of the wine menu we were looking at less than halfway through our tasting, and say "if you just fill that out, we can get you signed up right away" (ok... that was annoying... but I did read it to see the details and saw that unless we came and picked up the wine that we'd have to pay for shipping, which i wasn't interested in since we weren't overly impressed by anything we'd drank yet and we live about 2 hours away. So, I gently put the membership form to the side, and now couldn't help thinking that if we didn't sign up that this guy would secretly wish hateful thoughts on us) - Proceeded to mention the wine club membership two more times during the rest of our tasting. - At the end of our tasting, use the good ol' "presumptive close" technique and ask us, "so what will you be taking home today?" So we just bought a mediocre white to get him off our back. He still charged us for the tasting (which I'm fine with, but used to most wineries waiving the tasting fee if you purchase a wine), then he grabbed the wine signup form and put his name on it. Just in case we wanted to sign up for the wine club, he wanted to make sure he got his commission. Really? We were hoping for a relaxing experience, but walked away from Simi feeling like we were at a used Buick dealership dealing with a guy who was not gonna hit his quota this month. It was a bit reminiscient of Don Lapre trying to convince America in the 90's that they could get rich by placing "tiny classified ads" in local newspapers. I visited Simi Winery for the first time at this year's Wine Road Barrel Tasting. I wasn't impressed and left feeling like they didn't want me there. I tasted the: 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Landslide 2011 Petit Sirah The Cab tasted flat and too dry. This was commented on by others in my party. And the Petit Sirah was just way too young. The bouquet was nice, but once you had a taste it was ruined by this really juicy immaturity. Honestly, the free bacon & blue cheese tater tots stole the show-- eclipsing the wine completely. Which brings me to the atmosphere. Simi looks like they have a nice tasting room but for some reason they would greet you with the tasting barrel in the tasting room and then ask you to go outside where it was chilly on their deep shaded patio. And they really shoved these tater tots at you right away as if they were trying to cover up for the wine you were about to taste. And the folks serving the tasting were pretty awful as well. They were standing there gossiping about how crummy and over run the Wine Road Barrel Tasting was. Talking about drunken louts were doing all these stupid things. Right there in front me as if I wasn't there. Making me feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. Yes, there are a lot more people going to the barrel tasting every year and you inevitably end-up with some of this behavour. But there are also a lot more new potential customers coming right up to your door asking to discover your wine. You can treat people graciously and win them over, or you can instantly turn them off but insulting them with your stereotypes. This place chose to treat its customers as if they were undesirables. The service was as bad as the wine. Not a place I will be going back to anytime soon. read more
